I am the master of my fate…Invictus, William Ernest Henley
I lived by that belief starting at age nine, back in 1953. I was the captain of my ship, the master of my soul, the master of my fate. I pictured my ship as the mighty battleship the USS Missouri. I swallowed that belief until the tragedies of life—death and evil—crushed it out of me. I was broken, a failure, because I had to accept that 99.99% of life is outside of our control, mine and yours.
Everyone who thinks they are the masters of their fate are in self-deluding denial of reality!
Try to sell the lie that we are the masters of our fate to the homeless mother on skid row; or the child sex-slave; or the passengers on Flight MH370 as it was screaming down into oblivion.
I’ve read more than two score self-help books in my life. I accept the idea there is nothing new under the sun. But, I read Mr. Allan’s book—Fail Big: Fail Your Way to Success and Break All the Rules to Get There—anyway.
Do you know you can never step in the same river twice? The river may have been there for a thousand years, but every nanosecond the water swirling around your leg is different than what had been there an instant before. It’s constantly changing. Well, Mr. Allan may be presenting the same ideas, but they are different because he expresses them differently. His slant is different. And that difference can be as earth shaking as an earthquake.
My new belief, in the words of Mr. Allan, is: I am the captain and commander of my mindset.
I am not the master of my fate, but I am the master of how I think about my fate, the facts of my situation, how I accept and deal with those facts. For almost seventy years I struggled against reality, not accepting my situation, thinking I could change it, control it. I devoted my life to beating, at least cheating Death; mine and others. I was swimming upstream against a raging river of reality, exhausting myself and being pushed backward.
A year ago my belief system turned upside down when I realized that my ship isn’t the USS Missouri, but rather a canoe on the Niagara River, which dumps 3,160 tons of water over the Niagara Falls every second. To think I could paddle upstream against reality was foolish, doomed to failure and suicide. I learned the only possibility open to me was to go with the flow of life, paddling to steer sideways around boulders as life rushes me toward them.
This belief felt good, like a new coat, but something external to me that I put on to feel warmer, but not really me. I felt like I was trying to convince myself of this.
And then Mr. Allan gave me the words to change this into a real, personal part of my innermost belief system: I am the captain and commander of my mindset. This is consistent with everything I’ve learned from holocaust survivors, from Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. It is true, and this I know deep down.
I have no doubt this book can give every reader something new to think about, or perhaps a new way of thinking about an old belief. Mr. Allan has certainly given me ideas on how to cope with my failures, as well as new habits to form in this new year.
The book is well written, presented clearly, and is an easy read. That is, an easy read provoking lots of thinking.
It isn't failing that makes you a success, it's your perception of it. Very insightful. I never looked at failing way. Will failure defeat or motivate me? Your perspective towards failing is everything. It's a frame of mind. Develop positive traits and stop wasting time searching for short cuts. It 's not what you gain by achieving dreams but who you are becoming through achieving your goals. Fail Big is very insightful, encouraging, uplifting and freeing. I highly recommend this book for everyone who has the desire to achieve there goals and become successful.
FAIL BIG is now the 4th book I have read from this author, and again, he did not disappoint! I truly am impressed with the direct, non-sugar coated approach. This book has many great aspects and motivational points that make you want to "grab life by the horns." I like that he stresses that failing is ok and is part of the success journey. It's scary to take risks and go out of your comfort zone, but we cant succeed if we dont take the chance to begin with.
This book is both a collection of practical, actionable steps and a powerful guide to reflecting on and changing your attitude and approach to life. It resonated for me in an incredible way! They say that when the student is ready, the teacher appears. Fail Big is my teacher.
Great perspective on failure and changing your mindset around. Often we look at failure as a loss and this book will change your mind to see how it is necessary and beneficial.
This book is like a ray of hope amid darkness. It's a book that pumps you up during bizarre. With real-life examples of successful people, the book teaches us that failures are part and parcel of our lives.
It describes the journey of becoming a fearless warrior: learning to tackle all your problems, dealing with setbacks, analyzing your mistakes, and most importantly, never giving up. "I'm more than a failure" is one of the strongest messages this book gives.
Based on facts and reasonings, the book describes the art of dealing with failures and how they are blessings in disguise. The book has a treasure trove of tools and techniques to deal with various failure phobias.
One of the techniques that I found effective are ABP: Always be prepared, Take small steps, consistently improve, figure out what you want, ask for help, etc.
📖 In this book, you'll learn to:
▪️Take deep self-analysis. ▪️Embrace the fear of taking risks. ▪️Mastering the art of shifting mindsets in case of setbacks. ▪️Finding inner strength to bounce back. ▪️Ways to reduce the chances of failure.
Overall, it's a great, helpful book that teaches us to deal with failure in the best possible way.
I gave this book a four because I’ve read several of his books and I gave them all fives! This one falls just slightly under but is still an amazing read! I will be reading everything ever written by this author!
Failure is not only inevitable it happens to all of us at some point. By normalizing the fear of failure and providing concrete tools to help change your mindset, this book is an excellent resource to help you overcome fear and face failure head on!
This book is worth every penny in Gold. A must read for every entrepreneur, student, business executive, parent, or ordinary person that feels like giving up.
