Makoto Shimizu is just an ordinary office worker, blending in seamlessly with her colleagues on the job... That is, until her coworker Akane Maekawa discovers her well-hidden secret: in her spare time, she draws and sells girls' love comics! Akane is the last person Makoto would think of as a nerd, but as the two grow closer, it starts to seem like Akane may have a secret of her own...
this was my first manga ever and just the first f/f one kindle unlimited recommended. it’s definitely a learning experience. it started off very cute but one of the characters kind of did a complete 180 so i’m a little lost but interested to see where it goes in later volumes! does anyone have any recs?
Makoto Shimizu is worried when one of her office coworkers, Akane Maekawa, finds out that not only is she an otaku, but she creates and sells her own fanfic comics shipping female characters at fan conventions. But Maekawa offers only supportive enthusiasm for Shimizu's hobby while holding back her own secrets.
The pacing is soooooo sloooooow and the execution is frequently awkward, so I don't see myself reading the final two books in this ho-hum series.
Meh. The characters aren’t really that engaging, and Maekawa’s tendency of lying just rubbed me the wrong way. Not the best of yuri/girls’ love manga out there; I would recommend Bloom Into You or a yuri anthology of short stories rather than this first volume. Disappointing.
While so many (undeniably great) yuri manga take place in high school, Still Sick stands out by being set in an office environment, and centring around a pair of adult women: Shimizu (29) and Maekawa (25).
Shimizu has been working her office job for several years, but secretly enjoys writing and drawing yuri fanfiction manga about her favourite anime. She also takes her fanzines to conventions to sell them.
At one of these conventions, she suddenly bumps into her co-worker, Maekawa, who claims she wandered into the wrong event hall while searching for a different convention in the same building.
I just found it sweet! I'm enjoying the slow build-up in their relationship - I like Makoto's nerdy obsession with yuri, her boyishness; I like Maekawa's obsession with outward appearances and how that's affected her relationship with her art (and whoof, did I find art block related to emotional issues relatable), how she's unable to be honest with herself about anything, the front she puts up.
The art is so-so, but that's fine - I'm having fun.
The premise was good, but the execution felt a little all over the place. Reactions to minor things felt a little too over the top and things moved a little too fast for me to follow well. Glad I picked it up from the library and not the bookstore like I was going to.
It's cute but something doesn’t quite land. The dialogue feels chaotic and the pacing is a little confusing. IDK if it’s the translation or the writing itself, some moments just don’t flow as naturally as they should.
It’s not the best, but I'm intrigued enough to pick up volume. 2.
The main characters, particularly Maekawa, are giving me whiplash. I'm still interested in finding out more of the story in future volumes. I hope Maekawa can figure herself out send stop being a jerk.
So cute! I really love Shimizu and Maekawa’s relationship growing, and the storyline is very enjoyable! Can’t wait to read the next volumes, definitely recommend!
It hurts to continue loving things when they’re out of my reach.
3.5 stars. Super cute! It's been a while since I've read any manga, and it took me a while to get back into the writing style and the way themes are presented, but this was a quick, really sweet read. It's about Shimizu, an office worker at an industrial machinery company, who draws yuri manga/doujin for her fave series in her spare time. She's mortified when Maekawa, the cute co-worker she barely talks to, runs into her at a convention, thus discovering her secret. We follow them as they get a bit closer, learn about each other's habits, and other secrets come to light. This was just... super sweet and light and I had such a nice time with it. I really like when manga like this deals with stuff like internalised homophobia, and I hope it's something we'll see Shimizu work through eventually. Hopefully the rest of the series is just as fun and heart-warming.
It’s a little awkward when the bonus chapter is better than the rest of the volume. Shimizu is an office worker who writes yuri doujinshi on the side and this is discovered by her coworker Maekawa and the two women proceed from there.
It’s nice to have something not set in a school for a change, although the office setting is pretty much manga setting #2. The art is nothing to write home about, but gets the job done. Shimizu is, oddly, a LOT like the lead character from the Real Girl series but much less of an ass at the start (right down to the declarations about 2D).
Maekawa starts off as a likeable nuisance, but once the story starts diving into her backstory she becomes, honestly, a lot less likeable even if it’s clearly because she’s working through some stuff. It’s still a lame justification for how she treats Shimizu at times.
Still, I’ve read far worse and far better, so I’ll likely stick with it. The bonus chapter is really stellar - Shimizu’s team starts brainstorming proposals to help her get closer to Maekawa and they throw themselves into it. The final reveal of their second plan is so on the nose for shojo manga that it’s hard not to love it. It’s honestly such a fun chapter that they should have incorporated the whole thing into the actual manga.
Brooo this was so funny what the heck. This volume sets up a story about artistic burnout and pursuing your passion as a hobby vs career. Good stuff! The two main characters are a delight to read, esp Shimizu, and their dynamic evolves so much in just this first volume. Definitely excited to see where the story goes since this is a really short series.
5/5 stars. Highly recommended. Covers adult themes—in that the main characters are working adults living life, a bit of a rarity in yuri—while being lighthearted and fun heated drama between women. Big fan of coworker romance!
Still Sick shifts the dynamic between the protagonists in super interesting ways—Maekawa’s transition from ‘mysterious and flighty’ to ‘there’s a lot of issues to unpack here’ pushes Shimizu to adapt to some pretty great curveballs and confront some of her own issues. I really enjoy the commentary on making art and creative blocks.
Very cute and endearing manga and isn't set in highschool (thanks gosh for the latter.) As always, I love reading manga about... writing manga.
The two women have a lot of chemistry, both are on the journey of rediscovering themselves. I didn't enjoy the twist at first, but it actually made their later interactions much richer. It couldn't escape the cliché clueless main character, even though she's almost 30 yo.
The arts are perfect to illustrate the story, nice and expressive lines.
A rather genuine and realistic Yuri manga focused on two women and manga. While simple, the story is well executed, and feels less like a drama and more like how life just sometimes is.
The volume ends on a cliffhanger, which served to make me long for V2 to read immediately.
It's going to be hard to wait for the next volume!!
It was refreshing to read about a developing yuri relationship between two adults (coworkers) rather than high schoolers. Felt the pacing to be a bit slow at times but maybe that’s because I’m used to one shots rather than full series. Don’t know how I feel about the “personality switch after getting to know someone“ trope but that’s more of a personal preference.
Very fun story with hints of potentially more serious themes to be approached in later volumes. Looking forward to reading the later volumes and seeing how these characters’ relationships with each other and with their art evolve.
I would reccomend if you like reading this style. Only thing i didnt like is the way you had to read the book it went right to left when most books ive read its left to right.
Makoto Shimizu has a passion for her hobby using her spare time outside of the workplace to create and sell her yuri doujinshis. When co-worker Akane Maekawa shows up at one of the conventions Makoto was attending she becomes a major player in Makoto's life as she learned about her secret passion. So just as a warning Akane is a bit more complicated as a character compared to Makoto as we get a glimpse into her troubled youth and why she has her own secret that is also revealed within the pages of this first volume. Wil the optimistic but often nervous Makoto be able to find the real Akane and be there for her or will their differences be overpowered by the challenges Akane will place between them to protect herself? With this being a three part series we are only at the beginning of the story. :)
they are sooooo cute and i feel like their personalities are really unique instead of the generic tsundre and overbearingly flirtatious monoliths… i like their dynamic a lot! i probably would have rated this a five if the ending was genuine and not a fakeout because i actually gasped out loud at the kiss and immediately went :| when they went the “just kidding! this won’t change our relationship, right?” route :|
this was really cute and i’m excited to read more! it gave me a lot to think about regarding being friends with other creators and where the split between friend and fellow creator lies. I also think maekawa’s and shimizu’s personality shifts were really refreshing!
