It’s been three years since Gladie married Spencer and settled down as a full-time matchmaker. The three years have been quiet, filled with marital bliss and absolutely no murder. Without a mystery to solve, Gladie has grown bored, even as she has excelled as a matchmaker with more than a little psychic ability. Now, her Grandma Zelda has decided to expand the family business to wedding planning, and Gladie is going to be in charge of it.
Her first customer wants a wedding with all the trimmings, including an axe-throwing room, a tractor parade, and a longhorn bull instead of a limo to the ceremony. When one of the wedding party winds up dead, a freak accident is blamed. But Gladie’s murder antennae are up, and she’s determined to prove that it’s murder and bring the killer to justice.
Gored of the Rings is the first book in the Matchmaker Marriage Mysteries, the continuing adventures of Gladie Burger with all of the regular characters from the Matchmaker Mysteries.
Matchmaker Marriage Mysteries… sometimes love comes with a few dead ends.
Elise Sax worked as a journalist for fifteen years, mostly in Paris, France. She took a detour from journalism and became a private investigator before trying her hand at writing fiction. She lives in Southern California with her two sons. An Affair to Dismember is her first novel.
So here I am reading away with the strange feeling that this book is not, in fact, the first of the series. Amazon says it is. Goodreads says it is. I start reading the reviews and quite a few mention how glad they are to have Gladie back. Can't come back if this is the first. I don't like to start in the middle, or wherever this might be, so I'm out. However, I don't think I would have gotten far regardless. Gladie kept complaining about the lack of murders in her town. Strange attitude. I only got through the first 4 chapters of what promised to be a too stupid to live MC and a slap stick routine.
I can’t think of anything better than reading something that makes me laugh. Between the Mayor’s antics, Ruth’s sass and Gladie just being herself it’s definitely a toss up for best character. Sax manages to give everything a purpose, crazy teenagers or a new credit card system for instance. Just know that she has a plan and a purpose for everything. It’s really great to have Gladie and Spencer back again in a new series, same goofy town but an upgrade in crazy. Always a fan of Sax I relish my advance copy and wrote my review voluntarily and unbiased.
Best part of 2020 - Gladie & Spencer are back!! Oh how I missed them! Gladie is now starting a wedding planning business. What could go wrong? I laughed out loud with the crazy situations and quirky town that I love!
Well, this book was quite funny but it wasn’t as good as the writer’s other books. Literally nothing happened in the first 200 pages but the end for kind of exciting.
I have read every book Ms. Sax has written and, they just keep getting better! Gladie, Spencer and Grandma are back and, I gotta say, I've missed them! Yet again, it's hard to drink anything while I'm reading one of these books because, I inevitably snort fluid through my nose if I do!!! It's been 3 years since anything bad has happened in Gladie's town but, things are changing rapidly and, I couldn't be happier! These are books that you can't put down and, books that you know are going to make you snort and, laugh hysterically when you least expect it!! As usual===I Can't Wait 'til the Next One!!!!
Sex dolls and sheep, an alligator, and lactating women make for a laugh out loud read so enjoyable. I missed Gladie, Spenser, and the rest of the memorable characters in Cannes. And how could you keep triplets a secret?
Between the soulfulness and the pee your pants laughter, keep your hankies (and your panty liners?) ready. Elise Sax can bend a word like a pretzel made out of a balloon, twisting one's emotions at the same time. The world building and characters she has created are hands down some of the most bizarre and quirky nut jobs I have had the pleasure of reading.
Gored of the Rings revisits the swooniest couple. I can't think of any other pop culture icons that come close to our trash talking dirty mouthed gal and her sexy hotcha who takes as good as he gives. And, I'm not just talking about s'mores poptarts, either. While they started off as kissing cousins to Stephanie Plum and whazhizname, Sax (thank god) didn't fall into the same trope-filled, carbon copy storyline as JE, making these stories about a zillion times better. No hyperbole.
Good to know marriage didn't break our sassy heroine and she is back for more junk food murder, Looking forward to Misty.
Wedding planner and matchmaker Gladie Burger loves solving mysteries, so when a skull is discovered across the street from her home her curiosity goes into overdrive. Of course, her police chief husband doesn’t approve, but the strong-willed Gladie won’t be deterred.
I love the funny, crazy events that happen in this small town and, as you can imagine, both residents and newcomers, are quite eccentric. I especially love Gladie’s grandma Zelda, who is a professional matchmaker. The author does a great job of coming up with a wide roster of characters and no shortage of murder suspects. What really stands out in this book are the setting, relationships, and quirky, lighthearted ambiance.
The more serious component of this book, the backstory of several teenage girls who went missing years earlier, is glossed over a bit too much. More backstory would have added depth to the story. This is the first in this matchmaker marriage mystery series, but the author has written several other series, so there’s plenty of good reading ahead.
But only cute. A little bit funny but mostly goofy. And cute.
Did I mention that it was cute? Too cute to be a mystery novel, really, although if you gave an outline of the plot, it would sound like it was a mystery novel. But an outline wouldn't capture its dominant quality. Which is that it is cute. And goofy. And only a little bit funny.
And, not really the first in a new series, either. There is apparently a whole other series involving the same heroine and, I am guessing, most if not all of the main characters. This book is the first in a new series for the sole reason that the publisher's marketing department says it is. Anyone else would say it is the10th book, or whatever, of a long running series.
But it's cute. If cute is what appeals to you, you will find it here. Otherwise, look elsewhere.
Gladie was a newly established matchmaker, who was happily married. She was missing all the excitement of murder cases that she used to encounter. One day, her first wedding planning client came in demanding an axe throwing room and more…. She really didn’t want do wedding planning, but had to….
When the accident happened at the wedding, she was very intrigued. Incidentally, weird things were also happening all over the town. How are these related?
Conclusion
This images I had while reading this story was quite funny!
I've missed Gladdie, as well as her 2 besties Lucy and Bridget. And I have missed Remington winking at Gladdie even though she is married to hunky Spencer. And I can relate to Gladdie missing investigating murders. But oh my, eating and sex are great distractions. This book had an interesting mystery. It would not have been solved without Gladdie. And Gladdie's first forage into wedding planning, hilarious. Great book.
The story is just trying so. hard. to be zany and hilarious. It's exhausting and adds nothing to the mystery aspect of the book. I enjoy funny cozy mysteries, but this one feels so nakedly desperate to be wacky and hysterical above all else that, for me, reading it became an annoying chore. At a certain point, I wasn't even trying to guess who the killer was anymore. I just wanted it to be over, so I skimmed a lot of silliness to get to the end and find out who did it.
This is the first in the series. The main characters are Pinky and Spencer. She solves murders and he's the chief of police. They make quite a pair. She is always getting into trouble and he is always coming to her rescue. She is hired as a wedding planner and on the day of the wedding one of the guests is murdered. They are both working the case but they aren't working together on it. Pinky may have almost worked it all out with the help of her friends but will it be too late ?
A ridiculous, funny and laugh-out-loud read. Just what I needed to forget the troubles of the world! Settle back for a good mystery, funny characters, and don’t sweat the fact that it isn't anything like reality. Hang on...the craziness... Glad to see Gladdie, Spencer and the crew back for more laughs and hi-jinks. Can't wait for the next one!
Welcome back Gladie!! it was a great re-introduction to the group. Fun from the beginning and kept going until the last page. Elise Sax did a great job of keeping the consistency of the characters while giving us more interaction with them. The start of another great series that hopefully will continue for a while!
This is a short one. I'm glad it's short because I think the oddness of Blade and her buddies would get old. I like the oddity of Blade and her friends to a certain extent. The old murder was an interesting little mystery. I think some of the odd happening went a bit to far. I did enjoy this book, but I don't think I'll be reading book 2 anytime soon.
Gladie is back at it again, three years later. Everything has been calm. No weird murders, no one acting weird, nothing happening! Gladie is starting her wedding planning business and it is definitely getting off too a rocky start!
Perhaps was written by an editor of Mad Magazine comics or by the one who wrote Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy! The events in it are so strange. I certainly laughed but something was missing to involve me with the characters more.
Hilarious romp to find a murderer or two. Throw in a stolen alligator running loose, lifelike blow up sex toys, a fake breast milk shop, etc, and you have a fun read. Recommended.
A fun romp through a San Diego suburb looking for an escaped alligator and a psychotic serial killer. "Pinky" and her miss fit friends all seem to be crazier than one another. A cute diversion from all the serious stuff in the world.
I like her style of writing; she has a quirky sense of humor--my only objection this time around was the extra intimate details---but she is funny--I did not figure out who the killer was until she revealed it at the end
This is one of those perfect summer afternoon books. The characters are mainly loveable ,even the criminals, and there’s a laugh on every page. The main characters are all people we can identify with and as the phrase goes “what’s not to like “.
I loved it! I couldn't even count the number of times I had to burst out laughing as I read. Very light hearted, but still a riveting story line - and thoroughly enjoyable with a zany cast of characters.
Laugh out loud humour. Elise sure can keep you guessing right until the end. Boy can you picture Spenser. Hot hot hot. We really need more books like this right now. Thank you Elise
