Patricia Bennett, Head Librarian, was quickly coming to believe that her matchmaking Great-Aunt was losing the plot. Oh, sure, the warrior that turned up in her Library fulfilled all her secret fantasy requirements; gorgeous and tall, but he was also irritating and bordering on being an Alpha-hole. Besides, she really didn’t have time to bring him up to scratch, she was too busy working on ousting the arrogant - thinks he’s always right - Cullen from the Southern Sanctuary. The gall of the man. First he steals her library books. Then he sets up his Potting Shed as a Library Annexe. Enough is enough.
Descended from the Camelot Archers, Cullen has devoted his life to protecting the sovereign soil. But when he’s betrayed and forced to go into hiding, the Southern Sanctuary appears perfect for his needs. More so when he meets the riveting Patricia Bennett. But who knew the Library world would be fraught with just as many dangers as that of being a spy. With magic in the mix. Peril at every turn. Cullen must defeat a warrior-rival. Organise a high tea for a Chaos God. Hang some Christmas ornaments. Expose a traitor, and somehow convince Patricia that he belongs in the Southern Sanctuary.
It’s no longer just a battle of wits when Patricia and Cullen team up to go after a traitorous spy. They must learn to trust one another if they want to survive. But before too long Patricia is in danger of becoming addicted to the excitement, the adrenalin rush and worse, the man of mystery himself.
An optimist, yet overly sarcastic. Big on bringing the laughs and the heat to her paranormal romance and cosy mystery series. A huge fan of snark, with a side order of bickering and a double heaping of banter. Delivering to the page sweet alpha males and their more than a match female counterparts. Before wrapping it all up in a hugely satisfying HEA each and every time.

Okay, so I have been actively rooting for the bad guys to kill, or at least inflict a little pain upon, the heroine. That was a bad sign. But, when I finally hit the sex scene and I felt like I was going to throw up a little bit, I knew it was time to ditch this book. So, I am calling it at 70%.
It's not me, it's you.
So, you know those older women who are volunteers at the school or library, or maybe they are the "team mom" and they consider this their domain of power? You know who I mean. They take themselves so seriously and wield their authority like they are the CEO of Who Gives A Shit Inc... Even at our old church, you didn't mess with the ladies in charge of the doughnuts. They didn't take your shit. How dare you think you can volunteer for a church job and not realize that means that you are now a threat to some dried-up hags who aren't getting enough at home and therefore they hate everyone who has any joy in their lives.
That's our heroine.
She is so horrible. I just can't even. She's a 50 yr old spinster who rules the library with an iron fist. So, when this new guy comes along and dares to open an annex to the library, well, she's not allowing him to take HER power and books. No. It doesn't matter if having a second location would be better for the community, or that she doesn't even have to see the guy. He exists, and she must squash him.
"She couldn't let this gambit of his, to exert his will, his control on her Library go unanswered...
He's our hero. A complete dorkus who is apparently hot for the woman who treats him like human waste.
so many questions about what's going on here....
The idea that anyone would ever have sex with this woman just isn't plausible. Nobody, I don't care how desperate would do it. I don't care how often you tell me that she is "hot" - I'm not buying it. Her personality is the best birth control on the planet. The sentence that made me finally ditch the book.... after dry heaving was this one:
Reading one of JC's books is like visiting your fave glam cocktail bar, to find that a stool at the bar is waiting just for you, a yummy cocktail is served promptly and the gorgeous barman with the great smile is giving you (and only you) the flirty eyes. Book 13, and this series shows no signs of slowing down on the fun factor. Witty dialogue zings back and forth between our leads. And the romance (though fated mates) is on a slow building burn. Patricia and Cullen spend a lot of time butting heads, him chasing her, her trying to manipulate him, going on high stakes missions together and battling the bad guys - all the while the romance slowly escalates to a high sizzle factor. I thought Patricia denied the relationship a little longer than was required, but even then the author backed up her reasonings - Patricia being older than her usual heroine. The weight of the responsibility of heading up the vitally important library services, and missing the matchmaker boat back in her twenties, so basically assuming she'd be forever single. Cullen was all things awesome - and I adored he was short, but thanks to his Archer powers he doesn't let it get in the way of getting what/who he wants. Loved the idea of the Camelot Archers.
Fun situations abound. The library stuff was cute squared, the babies, Cara and her Chaos mojo and the visiting Apep. The witches. Visits from familiar good and bad guys, with a nice little tease of where the next book will be heading.
From the first page to the last I was smiling, laughing and sighing. It's impossible to read these books slowly so I know a re-read will be required soon to catch all the little in-jokes that I might have missed. Love this world and the characters who populate it. Just feel-good fun with a sexy/sweet HEA to tie it all together.
It took all my will power to save this read so it would be my first of 2020, wanting to kick the reading year off right. And wow, did it deliver, so much going on. Loved it. I adored Patricia, our mature heroine was independent and capable. Got a kick out of finding out more about the library and its magical quirks. Cullen was hot, short, but way hot and British, so James Bond hot. Being one of the Camelot Archers, talk about a cool backstory. This story was out of the gate fantastic - loved how Cullen took out the hit squad with nothing but brains and a pen. The action shifts to the Southern Sanctuary and our two leads meet - he instantly is attracted. She is annoyed. Let the verbal sparring commence. And boy, did these two have witty, smart (adult) conversations. And the more they sparred and tried to out wit one another, the deeper the attraction grew. Heaps more action followed, and fun abounded. The situation sets up were both amusing, yet tension lurked so I felt grounded and connected to the story and the outcome. Not only was there the traitor spy to find, our two leads had to deal with a heap of other cool stuff - storytime for the magical babies, a high tea for the God of Chaos, a naked warrior in Patricia's bed, witches, hybrid-jaguars and of course a visit from Darcy. Loved this book, the romance was sweet and sexy. It had me laughing out loud. And I even got a sneak peek at the bad guys for the next book (JC and her teasing, love her). Bring on book 14. Though I understand there is a new series starring the Valkyries up next - which I am totally down for if the heroine is half as good as bloody thirsty Brodie from book 9.
I can always count on Jane Cousins to provide me with a new book boyfriend that I can sigh over. And once again she has given us a fresh take on the H. He might be British and a spy, but he's short. Which is kind of a problem given the h is like six feet tall. Yet, it works, wonderfully. How could it not, this is JC we are talking about here. This was very much a battle of wills. As Patricia plots to oust Cullen from the Sanctuary and he plots to get under her skin and see him as a man/mate. Their constant skirmishes had me chortling and chuckling... and yes, sighing, cause that romance was steadily going from a simmer to a boil. There was a heap of action, loved the idiot Zartel and his attempts to seduce Patricia were hilarious. And wasn't it wonderful how the mega tall gorgeous warrior (who probably should have been the Hero) was shown up by our smart, short, very capable Cullen. Though Patricia certainly stepped up to prove she was no push over - fire ants in your pants - LOL. Loads of familiar faces appear; Hadleigh, the babies, Cara, Apep and of course Darcy, gotta have my fix of Darcy. The villains were fun, and kind of crazy, yet JC pulled it all together and even dropped major hints as to who/what's going to happen in the next book. Loved how the Jag-offs are back to cause trouble.
The only problem with this book is that it had to end at all. But the HEA was very, very satisfying. Like always I'm going to have to re-read this almost right away just to make sure I didn't miss any of the little hints, teases and one liners that usually populate JC's novels. Oh, sigh... so wonderful. Now the wait starts for the next one.
Oh, Jane Cousins how I have missed you. Though that seems kind of impossible since I re-read this series often. Can't believe that we are up to book 13 in this series and that it still remains so damn good. Full of action, fun and romance this instalment delivers on all fronts. Our lead couple had me laughing and sighing. They lock horns verbally - loads of snappy, witty dialogue - yet that attraction is undeniably building and building with every encounter. Yes, they might be fated, but JC is never lazy on that front. There are lots of little moments that connect and entwine this twosome as we head towards that wonderful HEA. So much to love here. The library. The arrogant warrior. The undercover missions. The final confrontation with the bad guys. And lots of little snippets of familiar characters appearing and past story threads, that pull this all together. I adored proud, smart Patricia, who has devoted her life to the library, since the matchmaker took a hike when she was in her twenties and the only thing she had left was her career. So it makes sense she would be so damn protective of it. And Cullen? Short, British and a spy, with magical moves that make him Patricia's perfect partner in all aspects. This quirky, magical place and its inhabitants are just wonderful. I love visiting. Want all the characters to be my relatives and BFF's. And yes, I often covet the H's, even though I always love the h's. I can't wait for book 14, though JC has mentioned starting a spin off side series featuring the Valkyries. Yes, I want Elijah and Copper's story, but I also LOVE the Valkyries. Honestly, what ever she writes I'll be reading.
Love this creative magical world. Book number 13 swept me up from page one and had me smiling, laughing and sighing until the very last page. Our main couple, Patricia and Cullen, are a little on the more mature side than previous couples, but their romance is no less heated when it comes to the sizzle factor. They are both super smart. He's short. She's tall. And they both like to be in charge and always think they are right. Perfect set up for the battle of one-upmanship that takes place in this novel. Throw in a gorgeous tall warrior rival for Patricia's affection. The local matchmaker. Cara and her chaos magics going awry. A visiting God. Approaching Christmas. And a Traitor to find. Well, that's a hell of a lot of threads to keep straight but JC as usual delivers in style. Action, romance and snarky dialogue abound. Not to mention a visit from fan fave characters like Hadleigh/Gaia, their babies and of course a dose of Darcy. Awesome. Loved this book, and the set up of the bad guys for the next one ( I assume) - so cleverly done. Can't wait for book 14. A clever, smart, fun read, with an oh-so satisfying HEA to wrap it all up.
Book 13 is this series was everything I have come to expect from this author - lots of witty dialogue, fun situations and a sizzling/sweet romance set in a magical world full of eccentric relatives/friends, all puppet mastered by the excellent manipulative matchmaker who sets up these zany hook-ups.
Cullen was clever and cunning, an Archer, who never misses his target. But in aiming to make Patricia his - he might have miscalculated, as she makes him a little crazy. I loved that he was short. It was a nice change up. Though he remains a hottie and is ultra smart. But then so is Patricia, Head Librarian who protects her territory like a lioness. They butt heads constantly - each using tricky sneaky plans to try and manipulate the other. So much fun.
Yes, this is Christmas themed title, which added a nice little sparkle to the story, but I'd happily read this tale any time of the year. It was a fitting 13th instalment - with fave characters popping up, dazzling us but never taking away from the main storyline/couple. That's just how good JC is, adding so many layers to her books that it is like coming home to a wonderful magical world populated by awesome friends and amusing relatives. And there are so many in-jokes and little threads carried over from previous books that even though you could read this as a stand-alone it is a much richer/funnier experience to have all the background history.
LOVED it. Spy stuff. Witches. Hybrid-Jaguars. Action. Laughs. All tied up by an impressive HEA bow - that final chapter had me smiling for hours after finishing it.
Two more fabulous MC's - and this is book 13, how in the blazes does this author manage it? Patricia, head librarian, about to turn 50, missed the matchmaking boat in her younger days. But now Alma, the magical matchmaker is back and it's her turn. And the gorgeous very tall warrior who turns up looks exactly right - except he's arrogant, annoying and not terribly bright. Enter Cullen, British, awesome magic (he's descended from the Camelot Archers and never misses his target) and best of all - he's short. (While Patricia is about 6ft)
So much going on in this book. Cullen is hunting down a spy who betrayed him - which leads to some evil witches and an old enemy from one of the earlier books pops up. Patricia has the annoying warrior trailing after her. Her library books keep disappearing in droves and turning up in Cullen's library annexe. The God Apep wants to meet his descendant Cara, and Patricia needs to mediate that. And her eccentric family are constantly popping up and being very demanding.
Cullen and Patricia butt heads from the first. But soon team up. He, because he wants her. She, because she wants him turfed out and her books back.
The action quota really stepped up in this one. Loads of laughs. The romance simmered and then slowly shifted to boiling hot. Another beyond awesome addition to this series. I love this world and all the characters are just awesome.
My only complaint? Book 14 isn't out yet. Damn it. That's okay though, this series is definitely one I could re-read, so I'll do that whilst I wait. Thank you Jane Cousins, these books are magical and I now have created a HEA cloud just with your name on it.
Well, that was a fun, entertaining read! It reminded me how much I've missed this series and how much I love this world that Jane Cousins has created.
I loved Cullen! I kept picturing him as Legolas and James Bond all rolled into one yummy hero. I particularly loved that he's not a traditional Warrior. His confidence and his powers made him really sexy, imo. And that whole concept of the Archers of Camelot? So freaking neat!
I wasn't as crazy in love with Patricia, I must say. Though I can understand where she's coming from, there were times I just wanted to slap her silly because she was so pig-headed about some things.
All in all, if you're a fan of the Southern Sanctuary series (like me!), you will not be disappointed with this story. It's got the humor, the sexy, the sweet, and the action that we've all come to expect and love with one of Jane Cousins' books! Plus, the little cameos by some of the characters from previous books reminded me that I need to do a re-read of my fave couples's stories.
P.S. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the next book will be about Elijah, the sexy head of the Enforcers. ☺️
I need a Cullen in my life, and I definitely need a Patricia! As always Jane Cousins has created characters that I so badly wish I could meet for realls, and that will live on in my mind for a long time. I love the southern Sanctuary, and all the quirky high jinx surrounding it, what an amazing world, getting little peeks of life there is for me one of the many highlights of reading these books. Another exciting read, I can’t wait for the next one.
There's just something about the way Jane Cousins writes - a clear love of her characters and this magical world that just zings off the page and sweeps you up. And no matter how hard you try to slow down, to savour the experience, you just can't because you are having way too much fun. Patricia and Cullen - what a pair. Theirs was very much a war of wits, a battle of wills - smart, snappy dialogue abounded. You never know what kind of couple JC will have take the lead, but they are always unique, fresh and fun. Loved Cullen, our British super - not very tall - spy. His magic was awesome. And adored Patricia who is smart, single and carries the heavy burden of looking after the very important SS Library. There were several mysteries going on here ( The books, the traitor, what Zartel was up to) and JC had fun with them all - interweaving visits from several of our favourite main/secondary characters effortlessly into the story. The babies? So cool to catch up with them. The matchmaker. Darcy. Cara and her chaos mojo. Lots of fun situations - no spoilers here - and the undeniable attraction that bubbles along between our two leads builds and builds. The bad guys were awesome and typical JC, she somehow manages to bring previous bad guys into the storyline and set up the next book (fingers crossed). Loved this book, this couple, this series.
Head librarian Patricia is incensed when books disappear and end up in new resident Cullen's potting shed.
What I enjoyed: * Cullen as very interesting as is his archer power * I enjoyed Patricia but would have hated working for her as she micromanages everything * Good to see Cara and Erik again
What could be better: * I don't get the title at all. There are no Kringles in the book. A lot of the story is around Christmas time, but it doesn't really impact the story at all. *
This is a light, funny paranormal romance series that always makes me smile. In this one, a secret agent of the British government who happens to be a supe moves down under and spends two years stalking his librarian love interest.
