Friendsgiving normally happened the week of Thanksgiving. Jillian Sayles saw the concept one random night where insomnia was present while strolling Pinterest. She asked her friends to fly in for dinner and surprisingly, everyone obliged. This short story by National Best-Selling Author, Nako is pleasantly sweet and to the point. NAKO sheds light and emphasis on the importance of friendship centered around black women. If reading short stories are not your thing, please pass over this story. Happy Thanksgiving!

This book was enough. I normally don’t care for shorts because they are...short. But, I am a faithful Nako reader. Every book she writes gives me inspiration. It’s ironic because this year was my very first time hosting Friendsgiving. My husband and I invited our closest friends over, I cooked amazing food and we had a blast. This story inspires me to host Friendsgiving 2020 and invite only my closest good girlfriends. We never know the minute or the hour. Sharing with those you love and who love you back is essential to happiness. Thank you again, Nako.
I enjoyed reading this beautiful and inspiring short that gave credence to friendship, support and love. Ashley found out Jill had a real team on her side.
This book claims to explore what it means to have friendships and meaningful connections in trying and difficult times, but I found this story to be melodramatic.
I found there were way too many characters to be properly fleshed out in such a short amount of pages. Most of the women felt like no more than bodies in a room: a sort of physical evidence to how impressive and how amazing this Jill woman actually was, to keep such different and variety of company.
Problem is I didn’t LIKE any of these characters. They sounded like badly-written stereotypes of what a black woman is portrayed as in media (loud, aggressive, God-fearing, twerking to hiphop), rather than what a black woman could be: aka, a human being with different interests.
I also felt that this short story was way too clogged with different conflicts and details to be effective. Here’s a basic list:
1. Ashley’s divorce and moving 2. Jill’s cancer 3. Jill’s relationship with her husband being strained 4. Jill’s relationship with God 5. Jill’s success 6. Jill’s infertility 7. The meaning of Friendsgiving 8. Ashley magically feeling like everything is right and good again just because a few strangers showed up and had dinner with her.
In a four or five chapter story? All of this is too much, and ALL of these points suffered because they were brushed over.
Not to mention: no real estate agent or anyone selling a house is going to leave a bunch of sticky notes up on any surface of the house.
Not to mention: Jill was supposedly a kind of celebrity with TedTalks and interviews on feminism and empowerment, but that wasn’t explored at all. What was the point? Just to show how perfect she was.
The only perfect part of this book was the moment it was over.

I loved reading this short story and it actually had me in my feelings to have a Friendsgiving night of my own. I’ve heard of this many times and this story put a lot of things into perspective for me.
Wow as usual Nako has gave us a beginning that had me in my emotions, sniffing, tearing up and yet this short story is beautiful! Ashley has got divorced and living alone in her new home. When these women knock on her door in Tiffany blue clothing her door will open and with each new breathe she will take an affirmation has been confirmed and came at the right time. Her homes previous matriarch was Jillian and when I say man she knocked me off my feet. Her strength, the choices she made and the class she carried. Patrick her husband loved and adored her. (This resonated with a very dear, dear family member of mine who left this world at 45) Each of the ladies Destiny, Tracy, Margo, Snook, Shamala, Natalie, Kendra and Corrine have their own stories I’m sure but this beginning...Wow and Bravo Nako. You got this... now ..A New Year’s Kiss.....
What happens when you have some strangers knock on your door if your new house and ask can they have their annual friendsgiving here, you say yes. Ashley had just went through a divorce and purchased a new home, but was not happy. Friends of the previous owner came by and that begin the story of the past six years of friendsgiving and made lifelong friendships. Jill was that mastermind behind friendsgiving and the story showed how they were there for Jill who battled cancer. This story was a great book to read to start off the new year. I laughed, I cried and I wanted to hug them all. Excellent read, excellent read!!!
I gave this book 5 stars for being well written and easy to relate to especially for one going through the same situation as Jillian. I recommend this short story to everyone to read as a matter of fact. Faith!
I liked that the women wanted to keep the tradition of Friendsgiving. I liked how they all came together for Jill. It’s important to have good people in your corner.
This story was so touching. I like that it brought women from different walks of life together. Friendships were built and a sense of loyalty was established... what a blessing
This book was emotionally and beautiful! This gives me hope and wanting to get out my comfort zone when it comes to making freinds. Good job Nako. I can't wait to read it ll
Great book to remind you life is precious. Your friends are a very important part of your life. Jillian started a awesome tradition bringing all her friends together. I’m glad they continued the tradition and gained a new friend in the process.
