I have so many issues with this book. Not because it’s bad. Rather, I know it could be so much better.

So, I found numerous CONS and, as usual, will share them first. It doesn’t change the fact that Legendary is a very valuable book. Read my review till the end and you discover even more, and better, PROS of this book.
CONS
1. Not Enough of Tommy’s Story

His story is heartbreaking on so many levels. The author of Legendary had a truly difficult start in life. He also boldly shares some of his darkest ‘secrets’. You know, the ones we usually share only with closest friends because we are afraid of sharing them with anyone else will cause them to think less of us.

But it’s not the whole story. I don’t know the full story of this man, but I know there was more than in the book. I know folks who got to know the whole story and they were moved to their core. Every single one of them.

Of course, it’s the author’s decision to reveal as much as he thinks relevant/appropriate/helpful. But I’ve seen the effect of sharing all of Tommy’s struggles with the audience and I felt he could do better than he has done with Legendary in this aspect.
2. Overwhelming Advice.

Unfortunately, this is a common affliction of personal development books.

A reader is showered with so many great tips, advice, tactics, and techniques that it’s easy to get paralyzed by this multitude. Also, I couldn’t find a clear pattern of what should go first and what to use next. Which brings me to Con #3…
3. Too Much, Too Shallow.

I’m a self-help junkie. I knew most of the methods and techniques enumerated by Tommy. And I noticed shortcuts at least a few times.

The author wanted to cover too much too quickly and sometimes he skimmed over the actual minutia of implementation.

One example: personal mission statement. I wrote a tiny booklet on how to write one (46 pages of content). Tommy wrote one chapter.

Another example: when talking about the importance of habits Tommy speculates it takes from 21 to 60 days (nope, it doesn’t; it’s 66 days on average) and mentions unspecified “studies”.
4. Too Much, Too Late.

Going further with the personal mission statement example – I wrote my book less than half a year after I went through the process for the first time. Tommy waited about a decade before he wrote Legendary. And it feels.

He skims over details because he mastered this whole stuff to the point that he doesn’t even consciously realize half of the things he knows. Thus, the overwhelming number of techniques. Thus, omitting some crucial details. He thinks they are obvious to the point he doesn’t notice them. And he didn’t put them into his book.

Do you feel like Legendary is a piece of junk written by an ivory tower guru after reading the CONS? Think twice. It’s a great book. Let’s dive into its greatness.
PROS
1. It’s Shipped.

“The book you don’t read won’t help.” — Jim Rohn

I could criticize Legendary because Tommy wrote a book and published it. So many people accumulated wonderful experience, but never bother to share it with others in the form of a book.

So, yes, this book has some shortcomings, but nothing is perfect in this world. Maybe it was too late, but it finally happened. Tommy turned his life around. Then, he documented his journey and shared it with us, so we can become legendary too.
2. Tommy’s Story.

Maybe it’s not a full story, but Tommy was vulnerable to the highest level. His story is brutal. In today’s world of shiny social media feeds, it’s more than enough to create a sobering shock.

If anything can get you out of complacency of the rat race, his story can do that. Tommy went over and above what was necessary to paint the painful picture of his internal misery despite the external success he enjoyed.

I’ll say a few words about this in my summary, too.
3. The Methods.

Tommy is not an ordinary guy. Not many of us had a childhood as traumatic as his. Not many of us spent their sentence in prison, attended a prestigious university, or were partners in the multi-million financial company.

But we don’t need to. The personal development toolkit he presents in Legendary is applicable for everyone. I used at least 80% of the methods he described to turn around my life. I invested zero dollars into my personal development for the first six months or so. Yet, I used the same methods he did and transformed my life.

You don’t even need a supportive spouse. Tommy’s wife is a saint. My wife isn’t 😉 She was very clear and blunt about my attempts to transform my life. She didn’t understand it, she didn’t feel we needed it. In the beginning, she didn’t support it at all.

I persisted in my personal development journey, using the exact methods Tommy recommends: gratitude journaling, a personal mission statement, journaling, meditation and so on. They worked. They will work for you too.
4. Significance and Success.

Tommy had worldly success marked off the list. He earned in the financial company in a year probably more than I earned in my 40-year life. He changed because he suffered from an existential void. He strived to give a meaning to his life.

Plenty of us wander aimlessly without purpose AND we struggle to make a living at the same time.

But the methods the author prescribes will give you success too. And significance. Also, it won’t be a bonus to your success, they go hand in hand. In the last several years I almost tripled my income, wrote books, started new ventures, but I was starting from a level of about $35,000 a year.

I worked hard to create some financial stability next to emotional, spiritual, health and other areas of my life using the exact methods you will find in Legendary.

Along the way, I experienced more significance than ever before. New friendships. New connections. People I helped. Readers thanking me for changing their lives.

Tommy Breedlove knows how to put you on the right path to both success and significance.
5. Personal.

Usually, self-help books, especially traditionally published are quite bland. They avoid any ‘sensitive’ topics and try to be as politically correct as possible. In the effect, they lose their edge altogether.

It’s not so with Legendary. This book has a great, very personal, writing style. Definitely, Legendary is not boring. It’s bold and achieves the right level of sensitivity not by avoiding tough subjects, but with the author’s vulnerability. Tommy doesn’t judge. He just tells his story.

It’s not the usual bland self-help mishmash. Or rather, the content is almost the same, but Tommy’s personal approach makes it readable and inspiring.

And it’s pretty darn quotable. I highlighted plenty of sections and sentences in the book.
Summary

There is nothing new under the sun, said Qoheleth over 25 centuries ago. I could barely find anything I haven’t already known in Legendary.

However, repetition is the mother of learning. Even if you have been studying personal development for decades, this book is worth reading for Tommy’s story alone. His story demonstrates that you can be broken inside and heal. You can hate yourself and forgive.

You can always rebuild yourself. You can become legendary.

If you haven’t studied personal development for decades, you will find plenty of useful tips and techniques to heal, forgive, transform and succeed.

Tommy,

I finished reading your book on the plane Monday night. I've decided to email this to you as I'm long-winded... in case you didn't know after 30 years of friendship, and I knew this may take a minute. :)

Here are my key takeaways:

1. I absolutely love that the the underlying tone of this book is serving others. Not with expectation, but simply and genuinely out of love. I still remember you telling me you were leaving your old job, and I too thought you were insane, but I could also feel how much you hated what you were doing when you spoke. And to see you now, not only happy and fulfilled with what you're doing, but being successful doing it, makes me realize your heart was and is in the right place. Who would have thought serving others was your calling?

2. Gratitude, to me, has been the single biggest soul-enlightening thing in my life in the last 10 years. Not only for others, but also allowing my heart to accept grace from others. This act shines through all across the pages of Legendary. If people who read your book garner one concept from it, this book will be a success.

3. I love how much influence you call on from other people in the book. As I said before, a lot of self-development/help books are very cheerleadery (its a word... look it up), but more annoyingly, can tend to come across very arrogant, as the authors will present those ideas as their own, without ever citing others. No one is that smart, I don't care who you are. We all know that. This is where those books fail in my opinion. The best leaders and mentors I've ever had, have always acknowledged the fact that they were only successful because of the guidance of others, and they continue to learn daily. More importantly, that learning can come from anyone. #openminded

This was a great read, Tommy, and a very easy read at that. Regardless if I needed any of it or not, I was able to take away some great ideas to implement into my own life, personally and professionally (shut up and listen and daily gratitude to my bride making the top of the list). So for that, I thank you.

As such, thank you for including me in your book. I am honored and humbled. I remember "that night" like it was yesterday. I remember you coming home and saying "thank you" for still being your friend. After I left for the Marines, we didn't see each other for almost 20 years. After reconnecting on Facebook, the first night we hung out after that hiatus, you pulled me aside and brought up that night, you gave me a hug and said "thank you" again, simply for being your friend. I think about those two moments a lot. And I've often wondered why you would ever feel the need to thank me, just for being your friend. And then I think about how many true, genuine friends I have in my life, and it makes understand. I read those words you so eloquently spoke about me in your book, especially at the end, and it makes me understand even more.

So, let me say this. Thank you. Thank you for being my friend. No judgement. Always honest and transparent. And always out of love.

I am so glad I met the man you were when we were eighteen, and then met the man you had become almost twenty years later. But I have to say, it has been my absolute pleasure to watch you grow into the man you were meant to be. A man who has found his purpose. A man finally free, filled with love and gratitude. A man I am honored to call my friend.

I love you brother. Congratulations, from the bottom of my heart. I could not be more proud of you!!

Always learning, always loving, and always living.

Your friend,

Ryan

I read Tommy Breedlove’s book LEGENDARY --- twice. And I have to admit that I found many nuggets of wisdom the second go round that I had missed on the first. So there probably is a third reading in my future soon.

Now I have read many self-development books in my lifetime, a lot of us have, but here is the difference with this one.

Tommy is incredibly transparent about his past, about some of the mistakes he has made, and his transformation to become a better person. And here he mentions multiple times, that he is still working on it and not there yet. And if Tommy isn’t there yet, then there is hope for all of us, because this is a quest. He doesn’t name drop, he doesn’t success-bomb us and he doesn’t try to come across as a success guru. He just tells his story and shares some of the tools he’s discovered along the way and how they have worked.

From the very beginning of the book, this quote grabbed me, made me think, and I have probably shared it with a dozen people so far, and that is --- “Your net worth, is your network.” Tommy uses this throughout the book, about how the people that are in your inner circle, those that want the best for you, are your currency. I cannot stop thinking about that and am trying to develop my network, not of people that can help me, but of those that I can help and we can all keep each other accountable. Tommy also shared that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.

This book is very unique. I mean, there are many books that talk about fear, but this is the first one I’ve read that talks about shame. And what shame does, how damaging it is and what we can do about it. This is also the first book I’ve read that mentions that some of your memories we have that are connected to shame --- may not be real. And discusses how we need to ask for forgiveness and forgive ourselves.

There are a many books that have talked about learning to say no, but this one goes into more detail and how there are only two answers to making a decision. A hell-yes, or a no. If it’s lukewarm okay, if it’s a let me think about it, then it’s a no. You have too many important things to do in the 24 hours a day you are allotted, so only hell-yes’s will be accepted.

LEGENDARY does talk about goals and achievements but doesn’t take the typical approach of setting a goal, looking at the obstacles, creating a plan. Instead, Tommy sees the goal, then works backwards and reverse engineers the way to get there. And then makes sure that goodness can come, that he can serve someone else, in obtaining it.

And there are some classic lines from the book …

You must participate in your own rescue.
There is always a choice.
The message will be there when you are ready to hear it.
And, one of my favorites …
The things that made us weird as kids, are exactly the ones that make us great as adults.

LEGENDARY is a great read and I highly recommend it.

Not many books have earned a second read immediately upon finishing, but Legendary is now one of them. The shear magnitude of relevant information is staggering in the best way and requires a second read, if not more.

On that note, I will offer my only critique before diving into everything that I love about this book. I simply wish Tommy included blank outlines or pages throughout the book for the reader to write down ideas. There are many instances the reader is called upon to create lists, mission statements, values, morning routines, budgets, etc. A space for this within the book is not necessary, but would be very helpful.

That being said I loved this book. Tommy Breedlove has a very unique past that comes through in his writing. He is humble and accessible even as he is providing influential advice. I can’t count the number of times he admits to struggling with the same faults he is trying to help us conquer. This is so refreshing. He doesn’t pretend to have it all figured out.

As unique as we all feel, the human condition is shockingly universal. We all experience love and happiness; yet still suffer from stress, anxiety and self doubt. Tommy has done masterful work addressing that which makes us human. He tackles the personal, professional, financial, mental and spiritual sides of our lives. He presents practical advice and actionable habits that transcend typical self help troupes. It truly is a comprehensive reflection on how to develop our best self and become “Legendary”. There is no fluff. At times the advice is simple, but certainly not always easy.

I loved Legendary and will continue to read this book throughout my life when I need the assistance. I have already bought multiple copies and given them to those closest to me. I recommend this book without reservation. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.

A must read for anyone who wants to become a better (business) person!

I own and run a successful international business, and “Legendary” now has a prominent spot on my bookshelf beside the other books that have enriched my life and positively impacted my success including “Atomic Habits”, “The Science of Getting Rich”, “The Compound Effect”, and “The Happiness Advantage”.

Tommy outlines a system of success that is immediately implementable. He does an exceptional job of balancing core concepts with practical, actionable steps that you can immediately begin to bake into your life. His passion for helping others to be their best selves comes through in every page.

Tommy’s personal story and inimitable voice has inspired me to become more legendary in my business, my marriage, my other relationships, and my life. I finished the book a week ago and am already seeing the positive results of implementing Tommy’s “legendary actions”, financially, personally, and professionally.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to become a better leader, spouse, parent, coach, mentor, and/or human being.

I am admittedly not a consumer of the self-help genre, but I made an exception for this book, and I am SO glad I did. This is a very easy read which isn't always the case in this genre (in other words, not preachy!), very relatable with all of the stories Tommy weaves throughout the book, and so it reads more like a beautiful and inspirational story than a "Do This" lecture. More important, Tommy makes some very challenging topics really easy to "get" and consume -- highlighting the nuggets again and again so that there is no chance you miss the take-aways -- something we all need these days as we consume so much content and aren't sure what to store away and save for later. This book takes an otherwise intimidating series of topics and makes you believe you can achieve everything Tommy lays out for you because he breaks it down in easy to conquer steps. A great book for anyone looking to improve their life either on a personal, financial, or business level. Highly recommend for yourself, or a gift for just about anyone in your life. Any person who reads this will take something amazing away from it.

In Legendary, Tommy Breedlove paints a picture of a life that is more fulfilling, enjoyable and fun than just being on the corporate treadmill without a clear purpose. Tommy’s insights are anchored by his story of growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood in Atlanta. He rose to be on the fast track at a large financial services firm. He had the brass ring and much of the financial success so many want. Yet he walked away from it all, deciding his soul was not for sale. Tommy shows us how to build a legendary life, a life of purpose; founded on what we love to do, what we are talented at and is something the world needs. It leads to a higher calling. Where our passions and talents intersect, Tommy writes, lies our “zone of brilliance

Love the author's way of laying out a "personal mission statement." Putting this in the forefront of the mind helps guide the reader through what matters in life from a personal and professional standpoint. This becomes a starting point to organizing one's life around where they invest their time and focus. The book is full of self-accountability tips that go a long way to helping achieve personal and professional balance in life. A must read for anyone starting out on a personal journey of self-discovery or for the seasoned veteran that is looking to build upon their knowledge to leading a more balanced and purpose driven life.

There are few books out there that allow readers to come up with PERSONALIZED strategies and action steps. Legendary is all about figuring out what your Legendary life is. The unique part of this book is that it has DEEP exercises after each chapter that hold you accountable to actually TAKE ACTION and APPLY the WISDOM from Tommy's life's best practices.

This book is DESIGNED to apply these practices to your own life - regardless of if you are an entrepreneur/executive, student, or full-time parent. There is REAL VALUE in this book - Value that can help you find your own version of a Legendary Life and go out and leave this life a Legend.

This book is literally a playbook to approach a life of happiness & joy. Using his own experience to explain very simple tactics that require only a different way of looking at everyday events. I am blessed enough to know the author, Tommy Breedlove, and as an avid reader, this is one of the most authentic books I've ever read. It is like having a conversation or coaching session live with him. I highly recommend this book if you feel stuck or need motivation to light a fire under your butt in an excited way. Thank you for this gem, Tommy!

I love this book and would highly recommend it. I have read many self-help books from "You Are A Badass" to "The Four Agreements" to "I Had It All The Time" and Tommy's book Legendary is my favorite read thus far. The chapters are very well written and follow a great outline to helping the reader CREATE a Legendary life rather than just talk about one and the attributes of others.

If you are looking for a simple playbook that you can immediately start incorporating into your life, I'd recommend you read this book!

Tommy does a great job at getting to the down and dirty of living legendary and the “how to’s” of living legendary. There are a ton of great, actionable steps to take in this book. The only thing from giving it 5 stars was the I have been left wanting to know more about Tommy’s personal story. The book could have sprinkled in a few meaty stories to add context and understanding, but I appreciate not adding the extra fluff and getting down to the point too. Overall, a great book and quick read! Now I have to put it in action!

Inspiring read, appropriate length, and the author has a good narrator’s voice too...even at 1.5x. No matter your strengths, weaknesses, or where you are in life right now, there are takeaways in this book everyone can benefit from. Read this book and implement action accordingly.  It’s your one life that’s on the line and no one else’s.

Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom, Tommy Breedlove.

Any time I get to learn from Tommy is a good day. He is a man with a huge heart for people and a deep, abiding character. Legendary helped me reshape my mindset during a difficult time, connect to a better version of myself and make daily decisions that accelerated my growth. This is the top of my recommended reading list to the clients I work with. Thank you Tommy and keep knocking them alive!!!

Great book. I try to consume as much personal development content as I can. Jim Rohn, etc. Legendary had a lot of new content/tips/views in the personal development space that I hadn't read before. Definitely worth the read...and it's a quick read too...you can easily read and digest it over a 1 week period if not quicker.

Reading "Legendary" has been a great way to start off my 2021! I was surprised at how thorough the book was - it covers all the bases. The sections about reverse engineering goals and being a better listener really resonated with me. I would absolutely recommend this book for all striving to become Legendary.

Uplifting in a special way. Many points come from mindfulness and self care. Good reminder and a kick to success. My key takeaway is 1. Remove distractions 2. Focus on yourself instead of being all Ove the place and watching for everyone 3. One cannot go up and sideways. 4. Choose the path and stick to it, no matter what 5. Serve the society, every day to make a great impact in this world

Legendary was inspiring, practical, and heartfelt. Tommy Breedlove not only shared wisdom that challenged me to redefine success and live with purpose, but he also provided clear action steps that made it doable. I loved how each chapter gave me something tangible I could apply right away. This was a book I returned to often in my thoughts and will continue to recommend.
