Kann Verity alles zur Ruhe betten, bevor ein mysteriöser Mörder sie in den Tod entsendet?
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Angie Fox writes sweet, fun, action-packed mysteries. Her characters are clever and fearless, but in real life, Angie is afraid of basements, bees, and going up stairs when it is dark behind her. Let’s face it. Angie wouldn’t last five minutes in one of her books.
Angie is best known for her SOUTHERN SPIRITS™ mysteries, and for her ACCIDENTAL DEMON SLAYER books.
Book 9 of the Southern Ghost Hunter mystery series. Best read as part of the series. Gangster ghost Frankie and Verity are solving another murder and chasing ghosts in this cute and sometimes scary mystery series. Lots of recurring characters that you want to meet over and over again (like the pet skunk Lucy) plus new parts of Sugarland that we haven’t visited (or broken into) yet. The ghosts at the church are chasing Verity and it’s never been more dangerous to be a ghost hunter. Verity’s cop boyfriend isn’t happy with her ignoring the danger either since he can’t see or protect her from the malevolent entities. It’s a race to solve the murder and figure out the multiple layers of mysteries to the resolution.
Pulse pounding chills and what feels like family by the end of book 9. Can’t wait to find out what’s next.
If I'm totally honest I struggled with this one a little. If it wasn't Angie Fox I might have walked away early, but I know she is an author who can pull one out of the bag and she did so here. It took a while but it came good at around the 50% mark and earned the 4th star in the final act.

I think this series has "jumped to shark" for me. Both the last book and this one just don't have the same flair of the early books. Ghost hunter Verity appears to be a little more of the air head blond and cop boyfriend Wyatt is far to serious. Throw in ghost Frankie coming to terms with his death and who killed him and you get a lot of angst.
This time around we have a mysterious death in the real world that takes place at a haunted church in full view of the elite of Sugarland society. Verity was picking up on some nasty vibes from the time she arrived at the fundraiser for the Three Angels of the Tabernacle Blessed Reform Church of Sugarland. She only wanted a fun day off and was looking forward to spending time with her grandmother's best friend, Jorie. When a body drops from the bell tower, everyone assumes it was an accident, except Verity.
Between solving this latest real life crime, assisting Frankie in tracking down the gangster who killed him to find out why, and dealing with a very unhappy Wyatt, Verity has her hands full. She is determined to help Frankie find his answers so she follows him to a ghostly speakeasy, a haunted movie theater and to a long ago mob safehouse where, finally, Frankie gets his answers. She unlocks a secret that gives a lot of ghosts their final rest and solves the real life death. And, she and Wyatt finally discuss their relationship and why he is uncomfortable with her ghost hunting. 3 1/2-Stars
Southern Bred and Dead by Angie Fox is another first-rate addition to the Southern Ghost Hunter series. The book grabbed my attention from the first chapter and I hated to put it down until I reached the end.
Although there were some humorous moments in the story, this book was more serious because of Frankie's past and the current problems between Ellis and Verity. The plot moved smoothly with several ghosts making an appearance as Verity works on resolving an "accidental" death which reveals some shocking history in Sugarland. She is also helping Frankie to resolve his family issues and those encounters brought a smile to my face.
The author provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
I can’t decide if I like this one or not. I do like that it was back to Verity and Frankie working together. What I didn’t like was how many times there was an easy solution to keep Verity out of harm’s way, but the author is ignoring those and even started to make excuses for not using them during the book.
The main mystery was not nearly as interesting as the side plot with Frankie. The author did a good job of bringing the stories full circle and you can tell the people of Sugarland are starting to accept Verity’s talent with ghosts.
Ellis’ whole attitude during the book bothered me because a little bit out of character and almost seemed like he was channeling his mother, Virginia. The conflict seemed a little contrived. Without Virginia the author needed some conflict and decide to have Ellis act like his mother and decided Verity should completely not have any respect for his concerns. Maybe it was time in their relationship for a big conflict – I’m just not sure about this one.
Frankie still being tied to her house and her lack of funds is still getting on my nerves as it doesn’t show any movement or growth for either Verity of Frankie. I do still enjoy the books in general.
Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery Series has been among my favorite go-to reads when I want something humorous and lighthearted.
That being said, Southern Bred and Dead was a bit of a letdown.
Verity uncharacteristically grated on my nerves, especially during the first half or so of the book. For some reason, she came off as air-headed and flakey here. Also, Ellis, her boyfriend, seemed more stoic and way too cranky throughout.
The plot involves a lot of unnecessary drama and periods of tedium. Within that, though, is a fascinating mystery that held my interest as it built up, making the final third of this book well worth the read.
Frankie, the 1920s Gangster ghost, and Lucy, Verity’s pet skunk, remain the stars of this series. They’re the reason I’ll continue coming back for more.
*I received a review copy from the publisher, via NetGalley.*
Three and a half This is a tough one for me because as much as I enjoyed learning more about my favourite ghosts past and indeed his family I just didn't find this as gripping as previous books. I adore Verity with her ladylike southern manners and quirky pet Skunk but honestly found this book more than a little sad. I obviously won't say why but almost from the beginning to the grand revelations at the end it just made me feel so sorry for several characters. Plus Verity and her boyfriend Ellis are at loggerheads which has clearly been coming for a while but as a hopeless romantic who reads these books to get a warm fuzzy feeling I just felt a little let down. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Southern Bred and Dead by Angie Fox is the 9th tale in The Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries. It can be read as a standalone if you are new this engaging paranormal series. Verity Long lives with her pet skunk, Lucy and her ghostly friend, Frankie “the German” Winkelmann. One day Verity accidentally dumped Frankie’s ashes out of the urn and onto a rose bush. That is the day she met her first ghost--Frankie and it has been a wild ride ever since. I thought Southern Bred and Dead was well-written with developed characters and steady pacing. Sugarland, Tennessee is a small Southern town full of quirky residents. We get to meet Maybelle Clemens who is quite a character. She comes from a family of ministers, so she likes to go out of her way to shock people with her behavior. I liked all the action in this book. Verity has her hands full in Southern Bred and Dead. She must find out who killed Jorie Davis, who was an old friend of her grandmother’s. Frankie wants to know why his brother, Lou killed him. To top it all off, Ellis is not happy with Verity’s ghost hunting business and it has caused a rift in their relationship. The mystery surrounding the death of Jorie was multifaceted. It was interesting and fun to solve (I love figuring out the guilty party before the reveal). I liked learning more about Frankie and his family. We finally learn why Frankie was killed. I found Southern Bred and Dead to be a more serious book than the others in this series. There are humorous moments especially with Maybelle, but it lacked that laugh-out-loud humor that is normally present. That did not hinder my reading enjoyment. I love visiting Sugarland with its unique residents, cozy small-town feel, plethora of specters, and Southern manners. Let us not forget the adorable Lucy. My favorite part of the book was Verity at the speakeasy. She gets to enjoy some jazz music, meet a new friend, and experience a felonious first courtesy of Frankie. Southern Bred and Dead is a delight with menacing mobsters, frightening phantoms, a deadly dagger, a bothered beau, a pious pastor, and a sweet skunk.

Rating: Clean and Wholesome Paranormal Cozy Mystery Romance (with a cute pet skunk!) (Amazon)
Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. It does not matter is Verity is helping the living or the dead, she will give it her all. Even if it causes trouble with Ellis, her boyfriend. Hopefully they will both be able to work things out and get back to being a couple in love. Beau, her ex and Ellis brother, showed a more caring side and really came through for Verity when she needed it. We also get to see a softer side of Frankie, but do not tell him. And as usual, Lucy stole the show, she is just so cute.
The writing style flows smoothly and it was a quick, easy read. The author’s descriptive writing pulled me into the story from the very beginning and through much of the story I felt like I was right there, watching all of the action taking place. The mystery was well plotted and I was not sure who the killer was until it was revealed at the end.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Anytime you can spend time with Verity, Frankie and Lucy, you know it will be a good time.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and provided my honest review.
The latest installment of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mystery series is, as one might expect, a page turner! This one gives a wonderful insight into Frankie's life pre and post demise, and throws in some personal relationship drama of Verity's for good measure. The resolution to the mysteries - both of Frankie's death and the death of Verity's grandmother's friend - takes some surprising turns, right to the end. Well-written, intriguing, and highly entertaining, this book is exactly what we've come to expect from Angie Fox!
Funny, sweet, scary and action-packed. Book 9 and this series keeps getting better. Verity has lots going on in this book. A declining church with something strange going on, the loss (murder?) of a family friend, A bomb dropped onto their relationship by her boyfriend, an ex joining her in a ghost hunt, figuring out who capped Frankie and keeping her sweet pet skunk, Lucy, happy. I did not put this book down until it was finished. I highly recommend this book and series!
A Gangster ghost dead set on finding out why he was killed and his ‘not-so Girl Friday’ who is determined to solve the death of her grandmother’s friend and the uneasy ghosts in the church graveyard raise more than a little ruckus in their small southern town.
Southern Bred and Dead is the ninth of the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries that work best when read or listened to in order.
Verity always has good intentions, but she is not naïve and knows that Frankie will lead her into trouble faster than she can wink. She has promised to help him confront his brother about the shocking reveal they got at the end of their last ghostly adventure even if it means pushing her caring, responsible boyfriend, sheriff’s deputy, Ellis Wydell, too far when she rubs shoulders with gangster ghosts, bends the law, and tracks down a possible killer. She knows she scared him when she almost died on a few of her ghost cases, but she’s miffed that he can’t seem to accept that the ghost cases have become her career and she’s good at it with Frankie’s help.
Things have been building to a head in recent books between Verity and Ellis, but also to Frankie’s investigation into his own murder. I was wary of what was going to break loose in this book as a result. It did get more angsty and I worried that Verity would stubbornly hold her no-compromise position that refused to see any other perspective save her own, but it was great how her friends gave good advice and she listened. I was starting to mutter at her and especially because she does have a tendency to go rip roarin’ into the thick of things with no thought to danger until she’s looking death in the eye and poor Ellis and sometimes Frankie have to get her out of it. But, it turned out much different than I feared.
The mystery was clever and there wasn’t even evidence that it was a murder for the longest time. There are a few possible suspects and I didn’t figure it out early. I loved how more Sugarland history from the 20’s was woven into the mystery and we finally get the answers along with Frankie for his murder. His early years and more of his gangster past are a big focus in this one along with Verity’s relationship. It was great getting all that background since I have loved Frankie’s character since the beginning of the series.
There was a rumor that this was the last of the series and I could see why people would think that since a couple big series arcs were addressed, but I’m relieved to see that the author plans on more ghostly detecting for Verity, Frankie, and Ellis. Those who enjoy a paranormal twist to their cozy mysteries should definitely give this series a try.
I rec’d this book from Net Galley to read in exchange for an honest review.
Southern Bred and Dead is the newest book in the Southern Ghost Hunters series. Verity has 2 deaths to solve this time and ends up solving a few other mysteries along the way. One of Verity's grandmothers friends dies at a fundraiser at an old church right before giving her some items from Verity's grandmother. Suspicious?? Frankie, Verity's business partner and gangster ghost, plans to finally solve his own murder and find out why it happened. Verity's boyfriend and local police officer Ellis, would prefer Verity let him solve all the murders and mysteries of the live residents (not happening!). Sometimes I find Ellis irritating in how he talks to Verity but I still think they're a cute couple and hopefully will continue to work things out in their relationship. I liked the characters in this book along with some of the new characters. Maybelle is a hoot and made me laugh. You also get to meet Frankie's brother Lou. Verity spends time visiting a bakery, floral shop, church and a speakeasy both in the present and past trying to solve the murders. I learned to like Verity's ex-boyfriend Beau a little more than I used to. As always I loved Verity's pet skunk Lucy. She sure loves her treats!! Good read for anyone and I highly recommend it.
VERITY & THE GANG ARE BACK & THE GAME IS AFOOT!!! Title: Southern Bred and Dead Series: Southern Ghost Hunters Mysteries Designation: Book 9 of Series, Full-Length, Standalone, NO Cliffhanger #cozymystery #sweetromance #humor #ghostfiction Author: Angie Fox My Rating: FIVE DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING STARS*****
Ghosts, ghosts, and more ghosts, plus throw in a haunted historic church, a heaping helping of pulse-pounding danger, a dash of spine-tingling suspense, the sudden and baffling death of a friend at a church fundraiser, a missing photo and letter, a few spicy long-kept secrets, a fed-up boyfriend, a demanding ghostly housemate/partner who seems to have a knack for finding trouble, a perplexing mystery within a mystery, a crew of geriatric suspects, a sprinkle of humor, and a pinch of angst, then shake well, and what do you have? Murder most foul - both past and present! I adore cozy mysteries, love gripping suspense, and completely addicted to anything supernatural, but throw in a little sweet romance, and I'm totally smitten! Unfortunately, it's often difficult to find all four elements in one well-written book but fortunately, I've found an author that brilliantly combines them all into one exceptional story. Angie Fox has delighted her readers yet again with Southern Bred and Dead, a full-length standalone and ninth release in the Southern Ghost Hunters Mysteries Series. Fox did an outstanding job of giving readers backstory for the series as well as the characters, and this book could certainly be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend, at least, reading the first book, Southern Spirits, which will introduce you to the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries world and most definitely enrich your reading experience. I became a diehard fan seven years ago after reading The Accidental Demon Slayer, the outrageously funny first release in Fox's best-selling Biker Witches Mystery Series, another fabulous collection I highly recommend, especially if you love your mystery generously laced with paranormal elements, side-splitting humor, and dreamy romance. But I digress, so let's talk about this book. Southern Bred and Dead is imaginative, unique, cute, laugh-out-loud funny, sweet, and heartwarming. The narrative is beautifully written in the first-person with a single perspective from the heroine, Verity Long. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well-executed, at times hilarious, and flows effortlessly. There was so much I truly enjoyed about this book, but it's the large cast of instantly engaging characters who completely steal the show. They explode from the pages, grab your attention, engage your imagination, and completely capture your heart! Verity Long and her cast of endearing cohorts carry this entire series and have become my favorites in the cozy mystery genre. Fox skillfully combines every single one of these elements to craft a deliciously cute and delightfully entertaining whodunit filled to the brim with danger, drama, humor, ghosts, suspense, and plot twists, with even a little heartbreaking angst and heartwarming romance.
Premise/Backstory for the Series: Although the last couple of years have been difficult for Verity Long, it's also been surprisingly busy for the beautiful former aspiring graphic designer from Sugarland Tennessee. Unfortunately, the one thing it hasn't been is profitable - until recently. After successfully solving several murders, Verity has gained some recognition, or I should say notoriety, as Sugarland's resident ghosthunter expert and is finally earning a little cash with her new job skills. Verity isn't rolling in money - yet - but she's managed to hang on to the home she inherited from her grandmother. She lost absolutely everything after breaking off her engagement last year with her lying, cheating, now ex-fiance Beau Wydell, youngest and favorite son of wealthy, influential town aristocrat Virginia Wydell. Verity's graphic design services had been in demand until her almost mother-in-law used her influence to ruin her good name and her business. Had it been left up to the vengeful Virginia Wydell, Verity would have been tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail. Now it seems no one in Sugarland needs her services, so she's embarked on a new career and a whole new business...as a ghost hunter. Yup, she's officially out of the closet and has been for months, or rather since her interview with Ovis Dupree, the geriatric guest investigative reporter from the local newspaper, The Sugarland Gazette. And that's not the only change in her life. Her kinda-sorta-maybe, once hush-hush, and on-the-sly, new boyfriend Deputy Sheriff Ellis Wydell is now her very public main squeeze! And yes, Ellis and Beau are related - they're brothers! Huh? Oh yes, brothers! As you can imagine, the news was not well received by Virginia or Beau Wydell. But the past is the past and it's past time to bury the hatchet. Let's just hope Virginia Wydell doesn't take the idiom too literally. lol... And let's not forget her sweet little pet skunk Lucy and her very dead, flapper-era, black and white gangster ghost housemate, Franklin Rudolph Winkelmann aka Frankie the German. Yup, I said ghost. Frankie became trapped on Verity's property when she unknowingly dumped the ashes from his urn onto the roots of her rose bush. Oh no! But in her defense, she had no idea what they were and what would happen. So until she can figure out a way to free Frankie, she's stuck with the not-so-nice wise guy criminal from the flapper era who has turned her backyard shed into a speakeasy and hideout for him and his ghost gang cronies. Verity's life isn't perfect, but on the bright side, she does still has Lucy, a hunky boyfriend, her grandmother's house and, on occasion, Frankie does lend her, albeit begrudgingly, some of his power so she can see all those otherworldly things that go bump in the night. But things have really been looking up lately. At least, she's managed to solve a few cases. Now, if she could just convince everyone to accept her new abilities and recent career change, she may be able to win over all the citizens of Sugarland, maybe even Virginia Wydell, and make a real go of her ghost-hunting business. It seems Verity is well on her way to accomplishing her goals, but be careful what you wish for, Verity; you could become a target yourself!
Southern Bred and Dead Synopsis: The world turns, life goes on, and southern-bell, super-sleuth Verity Long finds herself caught up in another dangerous investigation. Thankfully, or maybe not, the universe seems to have her on speed dial with dead bodies, from both past and present, popping up at every turn. And once again, Verity finds herself neck-deep in another whodunit, both past and present. But if there's one thing Verity does well, it's solving mysteries. With plenty of help from her gangster ghost housemate, a menagerie of spiritual cohorts from the ghostly plane, her friends, and her steady beau, Verity has become quite well known as Sugarland's very own ghost hunter extraordinaire. No, not that Beau (the cheating ex-fiance Beau Wydell), her now very public, no-longer-on-the-sly sweetie, Ellis Wydell, Sugarland Police Detective and Beau's older brother. Nothing like keeping it in the family! And Ellis is certainly ready, willing, and able to serve and protect, especially when Verity is involved. He's very protective, thank heavens, since Verity always needs protecting. But lately, Ellis seems a little distant and Verity fears he's pulling away, especially after overhearing his conversation with Frankie during their case at the asylum. And despite her best efforts, Verity attracts trouble like a lightning rod draws lightning. Verity may now be a legitimate and highly recognized ghosthunter (in Sugarland), but she's still the born and bred, always gracious, genteel southern belle her grandmother raised her to be, always willing to lend a helping hand, especially to neighbors and friends. And, of course, that includes her accidental ghostly gangster housemate and kinda, sorta friend, Franklin Rudolph Winkelman aka Frankie the German, right? Doing a favor for Frankie is just the right thing to do. After all, it's her fault Frankie is trapped on her property, and this could be the key to freeing him. And that helping hand includes solving the mystery surrounding Frankie's death. But before their stakeout, Verity drags Frankie with her to a fundraiser for a local historic church, and in typical Verity fashion, her status as a volunteer quickly takes a turn for the worse when a good friend of her grandmother takes a swan dive from the newly renovated bell tower. And in the blink of an eye, Verity finds herself drawn into another investigation, and Ellis is not happy, at all! Poor Verity! Poor Ellis! But was it an accident, suicide, or murder most foul? And will Verity and Ellis be okay? We'll see! It seems murder always finds a way to bleed across the veil of time from the past to the present and, yet again, Verity finds herself drowning in ghosts! Oh my! Here we go again!
Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! It's my new favorite! Yeah, yeah, I know I say the same thing after every book in this series but only because it's true; I just can't help myself. I adore the Southern Ghost Hunters World and the fictional town of Sugarland, Tennessee as well as the endearing cast of characters Fox has created for this series. Southern Belle Verity Long is an absolute delight and Ellis Wydell is one hunk of burning love! lol... And never fear, Verity's gangster ghost housemate, Frankie Winkelmann aka Frankie the German, from the flapper era is around to cause all kinds of trouble and Lucy, the pet skunk, is ever present for a little heartwarming comic relief. And the supporting characters in this cozy mystery completely stole my heart! I giggled, snorted, snuffled and sniffed through the entire story. Would I recommend it? You bet and I am, for ages twelve to a hundred and twelve! Angie Fox is a master of her craft and never fails to deliver a wonderfully layered whodunit of thrills, chills, and murders, expertly infusing events from both past and present to create a mystery within a mystery. Will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book! Was I entertained? Completely and totally entertained! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
So we are back with Verity and Frankie! Last book was a rollercoaster! I don't want to give any major spoilers of it, but we definitely found out that ghost hunting can be some seriously dangerous stuff. So in a big overview of what you need to know to dive into this beauty if you're new or want a quick refresh: • Verity Long has a vase that her ex-fiance (Beau) gave her as a gift, only it wasn't just a vase, it contained the ashes of a 1920s gangster name Frankie. • When she wanted to clean the 'vase', she washed the ashes from it with water and threw them to her flowers 'grounding' Frankie to the property and now he can't leave unless she takes vase with her (which, she apparently didn't clean very good) • Frankie can lend her his power to allow her to see the ghost side and when she is connected, she can *really* get hurt by anything that happens in the ghost side and also the normal one. • She is dating a cop, Ellis (ex-fiancé older brother... small town) but they are so cute and so in love with each other. Also, we found out that Ellis isn't too happy about Verity's new job but he told Frankie so we were missing 'the talk'. • Now we know who killed Frankie and he really wants to confront this person so he can maybe get unground from Verity’s house.
So we start some weeks after what happen in Mint Julep (I think) and Ellis hasn't said anything about what Verity overheard and she has asked so they are in some weird limbo and they aren't sure what to do. She decides to have some little fun at a church charity where she is meeting one of her granma's friend who has something she wants Verity to have before she has to go hunting the person who killed Frankie. She feels some weird stuff at the church and meets with granma's friend who gives her a flower and when she is putting it away, the friend gets killed.
Now, I'm trying to write this review as spoiler-free as possible but beware that it may have some mild content, so read cautiously. I have to divide the story in two parts, one is Verity's relationship and the other, the mystery around the dead person. 1. The first one made me hate Verity for almost 80% of the book and at this moment I'm not completely sold in that ending. I knew she was stubborn but I really wanted to bang her head against the wall to make her see reason or for something horrible to happen so she can understand what Ellis was saying. I don't think she gets how dangerous is what she is doing and especially doesn't get that is not that she is a woman and should have someone protecting her, but is Ellis wanting her to be safe because he loves her. I hate feeling like Ellis deserved better and I know this isn't a romance, this is a cozy mystery with a dash of romance, but still, I think that if you're going to delve into their relationship you either develop it better or cut it. Because this kind of not really solving anything definitely didn't work for me. 2. The mystery around what happen was super interesting, I loved how Angie combined these two storylines so seamlessly, it was a natural progression and loved the contrast between the last book where we got a lot of hatred from our 'bad guys' and this one. I really would love to see more about this storyline, I think there is more to be said all the places that we visited, I think she made some impressions and could use those new resources and I mean she does have a date ;)
Overall I did like this book but for me, it's an in-between, like we needed this part done to get to the good stuff, as an introduction on what's going to happen in the future.
Southern Bred and Dead is the ninth book in Angie Fox’s Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. This fast-paced book is well plotted with an intriguing mystery that often had me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing until the reveal. The story flows smoothly, and the characters are well developed. This book can be read as a standalone because the author has done an excellent job describing and explaining the main characters, their relationships, and their backgrounds. There wasn’t as much humor in this installment. It’s edgier and has more graphic descriptions than the other books in this series.
Verity Long can see and communicate with ghosts, but only with the help of Frankie, the ghost of a 1920s gangster who she managed to ground to her property in Sugarland, Tennessee when she dumped his ashes, which she thought was dirt in the yard. Frankie is unable to leave the property unless Verity has his urn with her. Verity is a caring person who wants to help everyone, living or dead. She is productively using her gift as a ghost hunter and is dating Ellis Wydell, the Deputy Sheriff and her ex-fiancé’s brother. Ellis is one of the few people who believe in her abilities and has always been supportive of her helping the ghosts who need her but concerned for her safety.
Verity is participating in Sugarland Heritage Society’s annual fundraiser at the Three Angels of the Tabernacle Blessed Reform Church of Sugarland when her late grandmother’s good friend, Jorie Davis, plunges from the upper window of the church’s bell tower. Verity is convinced foul play is involved and is determined to bring resolution to Jorie’s murder. As she investigates, Verity discovers shocking history about Sugarland and is confronted by numerous angry ghosts haunting the church property who want to attack rather than to talk to her. Meanwhile, Verity is helping Frankie find his brother, Lou, who he recently discovered is the person who killed him, as well as dealing with relationship issues with Ellis.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.
"I hit the brakes in shock. Frankie flew straight through the window, which was fine. He'd be fine."
I’ve been reading this series almost since the beginning and I just realized how badly I want to be Verity! I'd love to have a Frankie, a ghostly gangster living in a rosebush in my living room who lends me his power to see "the other side" *sigh* This is probably my favorite paranormal cozy mystery series entirely because it's so well written with a ton of suspense, nail-gnawing action, thrills, chills, laugh out loud moments, a dash of romance and superb plots.
But this one was one of the best (if not THE BEST) in the series. Usually it takes a few chapters to get the story going and once it does, all you can do is hang on white-knuckled until the end. (And that's not a bad thing!) but this one went gangbusters almost from the start. There were two plots in this one; the first, an investigation into the death of family friend who fell out of the bell tower at a historic church after giving Verity an old photograph and a letter. The second plot involved several malevolent spirits at the old church who are bent on destroying Frankie and Verity for unknown reasons. And if that wasn't enough to keep Verity busy, she also has to deal with boyfriend Ellis's attitude towards her ghost hunting business as well as Frankie's personal quest to confront the person who shot and killed him in the 1930s. Add in help from an unexpected source, heartbreaking tragedies, happy endings and man, this book was unstoppable. I welcomed the long awaited exploration of Frankie and his backstory; it's been a long time coming and I loved how it tied the plot together into one narrative.
If you're looking for the perfect Halloween read or just like ghosts, you can't go wrong with this series. Definitely recommend!
I’ve missed Verity, Ellis, and Frankie! And this one reminded me why I love them so much. Verity is pulled into another ghostly investigation after witnessing the murder of one of her grandmother’s dearest friends. The ghosts at the church and cemetery where it happened seemed to have Verity in their sights, and not in a good way. Meanwhile, Frankie is trying to get hold of his brother to settle a score there. And it seems like all of Verity’s adventures are finally catching up with Ellis, and he is scared that she is in over her head.
Verity is her usual semi-naïve self, wanting to believe the best in people, and ghosts, and just trying to help. We learn more about Frankie, and where he comes from, and that was super interesting. Ellis is in his usual mode as pillar of strength to Verity, but it’s not all smooth-sailing for the two of them.
The plot was very interesting and brought Verity’s and Frankie’s families together in a very unexpected, but delightful way.
Read the whole series in order, if you’re in the mood for a different kind of mystery novel. You will find interesting twists and lots of humor.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Angie Fox is absolutely one of my go to authors when I want mystery and a bit of romance. We've been building up to the mystery of Frankie's killer for a long time and we found out who at the end of the last book, but not the why. This book sees Frankie trying to confront his killer and at long last we find out the why, and it was a shocker. We also see that Verity and Elis are a bit on the outs after the events in the asylum and an unlikely person is determined to see them happy together. Add in a bit of the adorable Lucy and some hoots of secondary characters and you have yourself one great book that I couldn't put down! Highly recommended!
4.5 Stars... Verity falls into another mystery when a dear friend plummets from a bell tower, accident or murder??... To add insult to injury, the church at which her death occurred, is literally crawling with spirits who seem eager for Verity's attention... Add in Frankie's need to resolve his past and Ellis's need to protect Verity at all cost, and she is certainly at her wits end... I love how Angie Fox tied together the intricacies of this story and blends all pieces creating a whole picture that has beautiful resolution... Another entertaining read with it's Southern charm and supernatural twists... I look forward to each new release:)
Frankie, the ghost, has a bee in his bonnet now that he's uncovered the identity of his murderer and is bent on revenge. Meanwhile, Verity's time is committed to the heritage fundraiser at the old church out in the country. A treasure trove of memories offered to Verity precipitates a murder, threatening to send Frankieès plans off the rails. What's a ghost gotta do to get justice around here?
I finished this book with tears (happy) threatening to spill and a tiny itch in my nose telling me this was true emotion. I find these characters compelling and they have become a part of my fictional family. It's wonderful to take time to check in on their lives and learn what they've been up to. The Southern Ghost Hunter series may be written in the cosy genre, but it really is great storytelling.
I love this series for its warmth and humour. This particular story was off the charts. I highly recommend both.
Southern Bred and Dead is the latest delightful entry in this series. Verity has her hands full solving several mysteries at once. Frankie needs Verity’s help confronting his killer. Verity needs to find out how her grandmothers friend died and what was so important about the photograph she had. And to top it all she needs to help Ellis deal with the dangers she faces in her line of work or lose him. This is a brilliantly twisted tale of murder and intrigue. I absolutely loved it!
Just like with a lot of mystery series, you can read this out of order. Should you? Maybe. Honestly, my being lost in this outside of the mystery really was on me reading the ninth book in a series first. But, I liked it so much that I feel that I need to go back to the beginning and get all the wonderful plot this world has to offer.
I received an ecopy of this through Netgalley; however, all opinions are my own.
Oh what can I say. I don’t usually do mystery’s but Angie Fox and The Southern Ghost Hunter series never lets me down. I love this series, it’s always such a fun read and Southern Bred and Dead was no exception. While this one was a little more emotional then the others, I loved every page I read. You cannot go wrong with this series.
Verity just can't stay out of trouble, especially not with Frankie around. But he is around, and Verity is in trouble. There are plenty of surprises in this fast-paced book, as well as plenty of ghosts. So, settle in, grab some sweet tea and get ready for another ghostly wild ride with Verity, Frankie and the gang. This is such a great book, as well as a great series. I highly recommend both for any lover of ghostly cozy mysteries.
I absolutely love this series and this book was phenomenal. This one saw Verity and Ellis on the outs, Beau becoming a (Helpful!) ghost hunting assistant and Frankie finally getting some closure with his brother and why he was shot. I really enjoyed how Beau helped Verity out with a difficult ghost and honestly hope we see more of him in that role because he did so well and the ghost really liked him. I am also hoping that now that Frank has gotten closure he doesn’t disappear into wherever he’s supposed to go next, because he’s one of my favorite characters in this series. This was another great Southern Ghost Hunter book and I can’t wait to see what comes next for these characters!
I really enjoyed this one! I liked that Verity was back solving a mystery in Sugarland, this time involving a family secret. This one really dived into both Frankie and Verity’s family history. All the usual Sugarland characters were back, even Lucy. A fun read!
I enjoyed this book and learning more about Frankie and his family, however, it made the first part of this book move a bit slowly. Additionally, while inevitable, Verity's fighting with Ellis was a bit sad. I love this series and normally laugh through each book, but didn't do that this time. Yes, there were bits of humor, but not as much or as funny as the earlier books. Having said that, I really liked the ending and the way everything came together.
If you're a fan of the series, you will want to read this for all of the characters' histories that are revealed. If you're new to the series, you would enjoy more if you've read the prior books.
I'm giving this one 3.5 stars, but rounding up to 4 stars, mostly because, while an entertaining story, it was missing most of the humor the series is known for. I love this authors' work and she remains on my must read authors' list.
Southern Bred and Dead was fun read and a great addition to the series. It answers some of the lingering questions. Now we have to wait a year for the next addition. Shucks.
