I re-read The New Kindaichi Files: The Second serial murder at the Opera House Island, and it's a descent read, the murder mystery is finely handled, although I think the writing has made it easy for readers to guess at the murderer's identity, what a pity.
As far as I can tell of the 9 Young Kindaichi Light Novels, 4 have officially been published in English. Apparently the English translation of this first one, and maybe the others for all I know, titled The New Kindaichi Files (aka Opera House, The New Murder) was abridged. For the version I read, someone named Fuyuki very generously took the time to translate and include the missing sections. So thank you, Fuyuki!
It’s not easy being a Kindaichi fan if you can only read English. Except for the 17 Tokyopop editions* published in the early 2000s and a few old bilingual editions, there isn’t much available. And that which is available is pricey. So thank the gods of manga that there are people in the world sacrificing their own free time to bring Kindaichi to us.
Like the only other Kindaichi Light Novel I read, this was a fun read. It’s more PG-13 than the anime or manga. It’s too bad the manga and anime can’t be a bit more mature because there’s a lot of humor left out. In this story, like many other Kindaichi stories, Hajime is stranded on an island and someone is murdering people in the guise of the Phantom of the Opera. I believe Kindaichi has solved murders on this island on at least 4 separate occasions:
1. The original manga 2. This Light Novel 3. In the shin/new manga 4. In the 37 yo manga
The latest live action series adapted the third one. I’m pretty sure one of the older live action series adapted one of them at least once. And the old anime adapted the first one as an episode, one as a special, and there was a film. I always get confused which adapted which opera story. In any case, I’m sure we’ll see more of Kindaichi at the opera house someday!
*The whole set is currently listed on eBay for a staggering $1,299–used!
This is a Kindaichi mystery, so of course I enjoyed it. But I had already read both other mysteries set at the opera house, so the fact that this was *yet another opera murder* did lessen my enjoyment somewhat.
A fine locked-room murder mystery, but with a few totally bizarre horny moments from the main character. Did we need to know that he gets through a lot of Kleenex after every time his female friend visits in a skimpy outfit? Who is book this aimed at?
