Inchtinn is a Scottish island with a mysterious past and a frightening present, as Noah discovers when he and his mother visit the island so she can find inspiration for her next children's book. It's remote (only accessibly by boat), it is isolated (only one short-wave radio exists on the island - no electricity, no running water, etc) and it was once the site of a leper colony. Noah doubts he will find much to interest him on the island but he is soon discovers more than he was bargaining for.

Very atmospheric and creepy! I devoured this book in a couple of days and enjoyed how Weston kept up the suspense from the moment Noah and his mother arrived on the island. At the heart of any good supernatural story is background emotional turmoil, and Noah and his mother had this in spades - they don't really get along very well, especially since the death of his adopted father, and the idea of spending so much time trapped together doesn't seem to thrill either of them. So, alongside the growing unease on the island, the two characters must play out their own drama.

I really enjoyed this book - in some ways I wonder if there might be a follow-up. Difficult to say why because of spoilers but I would be happy to read more!

I bought this book because the mother is a writer. Then they go to Scotland and it is so remote there is only one other person living there. However, this book is about a community of hidden patients with leprosy. leprosy still exists today. People still have the Bible-days diseases. We tend to think all these things have been eradicated but for many people it is not so. Knitters and chrocheters often knit\chrochet bandages for people with leprosy and send them overseas. I think this kind of bandage is better because they can be washed. This community is a thing of the past and has been abandoned. (SPOILER)
We see the past through the eyes of a ghost who lived and died in the "hospital" there.
