Keira aims for the perfect mix of character, plot, and heat in her M/M romances. She writes everything from swashbuckling pirates to heartwarming holiday escapism. Her fave tropes are enemies to lovers, age gaps, forced proximity, and passionate virgins. Although she loves delicious angst along the way, Keira guarantees happy endings!
Adorable short story and perfect for a taste of Christmas cheer. The epilogue wrapped things up perfectly and sent these boys off holding hands in a winter wonderland. Recommended!
This short Christmas romance blew me off my feet - and it was totally unexpected.
The title is a little odd and I basically just wanted to look into it to see what to expect when "the lovelight gleams", LOL.
But, OMG, I'm so happy that I'm not shying away from Christmas stories during the year, because that one for sure has a fixed place in this year's top 10 favorites I've read!
It is absolutely amazing! Yes, it's more or less a short story/novella, but as such, it is PERFECTION!
The popular teenage sci-fi show 'Space Academy' just got renewed for its second season and the writers have decided to put a little 'juice' into it, by giving two space cadets - one a human and one an alien - a subtle romance that turns more solid throughout the season.
The story begins when the guys' first kiss is being filmed. Hollywood heartthrob Cary Holloway, son of action-movie veteran Robert Holloway, plays the role of Kishi, a handsome alien with scales on his neck. Cary's kiss with acting colleague Ryan gets filmed again and again - which is a usual procedure on set.
However, Canadian actor Ryan Drake, who has feelings for Cary, doesn't have the easiest of times allowing Cary to claim his mouth for a passionate kiss again and again.
He knows, though, that his feelings are wasted on handsome Cary who is straight and dating some starlet - not to mention that he's the son of a famous Hollywood legend. They wrap up the episode right before Christmas and Cary confides in Ryan that he's never seen a white Christmas, as his parents always spent Christmas in the tropics- when they were not getting married or divorced that is. So he doesn't know what a traditional Christmas looks like.
Ryan's mouth is quicker than his mind when he invites Cary to join him spending the holidays with his family in a cabin in snowy Canada, knowing fully well that Cary's girlfriend already booked a spa treatment over the holidays for them.
Ryan doesn't really think about the invite anymore, until he's driving northwards in Canada and gets a phone call from Cary, asking if the invitation still stands. Which it so does, as you can imagine.
And so a famous Hollywood heartthrob is spending Christmas in a remote cabin with Ryan and his well-meaning family who wonder why straight tv star Cary Holloway is spending Christmas with them while their son/brother/uncle Ryan keeps smiling like a love-struck fool.
Of course, Ryan doesn't fully understand *why* Cary asked him to spend Christmas with him and a little comedy of errors makes this a very entertaining journey towards happiness for both guys.
I LOVED THIS SO MUCH! I cannot find words to tell you how wonderful this story is.
These guys share Ryan's childhood room with glow-in-the-dark stars on the walls, while wearing reindeer pajamas!! The sex blew me away and for some reason, I liked Cary very very much, even though the story is told from Ryan's POV.
And once again Keira Andrews manages to create beautifully likable, lifelike characters, even though they're both tv stars - which, in my usual opinion, would mean they're as far from reality as you can be, LOL. Also the family members are amazing. They are lovable, teasing, unique, but never annoying or over the top.
Of course, there isn't too much plot here, so there's only so much you can say in a review, but I recommend this 100% - for a heart-warming Christmas read, or for any other time during the year when you need that warm fuzzy feeling that snowflakes at Christmas can bring.
The best thing about this novella -- aside that it being SO VERY CHRISTMAS-Y, in snowy cabin in the Great White North, Canada, no less! -- was how Keira Andrews managed to throw away all my concerns about cliché tropes. Several times I was sighing in discontent with the plot introduced to find out on the next pages that she didn't go the way I thought she would.
I will explain in a moment...
First of all, Ryan pining over Cary was so cute! I loved his inner thoughts -- on how he struggled to control his feelings. I thought the two men had such great chemistry and I actually loved the beginning where it showed us the scene of the movie, and the little tid-bits on how fans dubbed their characters ship as "Stishi" (that is Steven and Kishi).
Ryan's family was AWESOME -- again, I loved how very Christmas-y this novella was. It had everything you watched on Christmas movies: Christmas dinner, mistletoe, hunting for the perfect Christmas tree, presents on socks, everything. Ryan and Cary even had SNOW FIGHT! Gah, as someone who lives in tropical country, this is the kind of thing that makes me jealous of people living with 4-seasons!
Then, there was how Ms. Andrews managed to throw away all my worries:
1) I thought this would be another gay-for-you story: here's Cary who always been with woman, but hey, look, he had history of jerking off with a man, but it was just a phase, until Ryan ... pish posh. But then, wait,
2) Then when Ryan and Cary had their first fight, I thought this would be another common plot, where one character was out and the other wasn't, and the out character would push the other one to not live in secret, etc. I never really like that plot -- since I believe that each person has their own timeline to decide whether they want to tell everyone about their sexuality. So yeah, I was a bit disappointed ... until
... and the epilogue was lovely *sigh*. This was a beautiful and just the 'right' kind of how holiday romance should be.
Someone ( Ami ) kept badgering telling me I should read this ultimate Christmasy story. So of course I did. ;) Ryan and Cary are both stars of a new TV show and are good friends, but that's where the similarities end. Ryan had an ideal childhood. A loving family with traditions and acceptance. Cary doesn't have that, so many step parents, pressures and a less than accepting family, poor little rich kid. So when he gets the chance to spend Christmas with Ryan and his family in a cabin in the middle of nowhere Canada, he does. Here's where Ryan's crush comes to light, cause that boy has been crushing on his straight co-star forever. Some lovin', some misunderstandings, some snow, some mistletoe and a sigh-worthy epilogue rounds out this cute little Christmas tale.
Come on now, this is Keira Andrews and I wasn't surprised that I quite enjoyed this.
Ryan has been in love with his costar since the day they met and he struggles to keep his feelings under wraps... perhaps a little too well. Seems his spontaneous invite to his family's cabin over the Christmas holiday however, is just the impetus for Cary to take the next step. Such close quarters make it hard to deny his desires, but will Ryan's false protestations backfire?
As usual this did not disappoint on the twisty UST, hot smex and joyful feels after some good angsty yearning. Just the perfect little love story to get you in the mood for this time of year!
Ryan and Cary are both actors in the same show. Ryan is openly gay, Cary is straight.
When Ryan invites Cary over to spend Christmas with his family he doesn’t expect Cary to actually accept. Ryan has been in love with Cary for some time now, but because Cary is straight he knows it won’t lead to anything.
Of course the two get even closer over the holidays and when there is a kiss in the snow, Ryan suspects Cary is not as straight as he thought.
This had a very nice family feeling. I loved Ryan’s family. The supposedly ‘funny’ moments with family members often feel forced in books. Not in this one. It felt real and I really liked spending time with them.
I want to spend my Christmas at Ryan’s family’s cabin too.
Quick Review after my 6th re-read - 2018 Cary and Ryan never get old for me and I've read this Christmas story every year since it came out. The on set kiss is amazing. Ryan waiting for Cary to show up makes me hold my breath. The snowball fight melts me and then the scene in the ice fishing hut turns me into goo. Each re-read is like the first time all over again and yet it's like coming home too. I just love the Holy Holiday out of this story down to their last scene. I hope after all these years Cary and Ryan are still happy and kissing on New Year's eve. **************************************************
Here’s the thing. I rarely re-read a book. I like to keep the feelings of the first time experience and move on and yet when we laid out our reading for the HolidayWeek on the blog, I knew I would read this again. Not only because I failed to review it last year when I read it, but there was something about it that told me it would be worth it. You know what? It so was.
I love how the book starts, with the on screen kiss of Ryan and Cary. You feel Ryan’s want as he gets lost in the fake kiss and you know how much he likes Cary. Through the small interviews we get a bit of the stress being Cary Holloway is and what he has to live up to in a family of old Hollywood leading men… manly men that is. So much pressure on that boy. Ugh.
When Ryan and Cary wrap shooting for their human/alien space ship high school drama, Cary laments about never having a real white Christmas and Ryan invites him to spend the holiday with him and his family but Cary can’t go because of the whole girlfriend deal… but then he shows up.
Gah! I was so on edge with Ryan as he was waiting for Cary to make that two hour drive from the airport. Knowing how much Ryan likes Cary but tries to keep that all in check because Cary is straight, just did my poor romantic heart in. Unrequited love is one of my favorite tropes and when you have it between two boys, one of who is seemingly straight, it just melts me into a puddle of goo and this is Christmas goo! Nothing better.
The whole first kiss, the admission of want and the climax of the story, no pun intended, were goo worthy. So gooey and lovely and hot and swoony and just what I needed.
I adore this book, I simply adore it. I love the way the boys come together, fight together and find love. It’s simply wonderful to read it and to have it set around Christmas. Ack! Snowball fights, ice huts, confessions under tree lights, star gazing and just the whole damn thing. I love it. I just love Cary and Ryan! Where the Lovelight Gleams will definitely be a re-read for me every year and for a girl who doesn’t read a book more than once, that’s saying something.
***** This is a wonderful short Christmas tale, that has everything we like. Actors Ryan and Cary, two sexy guys, a variety of fun characters, a lovely story of a welcoming, loving family, and more. Our men are reluctant at fist, as they kiss in their movie roles.
Now, on Christmas break, thay can admit how they feel. Cary knows his folks won't approve, but he's tired of hiding. Ryan's been out and has an accepting family. The guys have some hot, sexy times that are explosive. We root for these deserving men to be happy. Great epilogue. I love Keira Andrews writing ! ENJOY ! ====================
What’s not to love!? Friends to lovers, celebrity MCs, scorching hot first times, awesome family feels, and lots and lots of Christmas cheer!
I really loved the fact that Ryan and Cary were besties who were secretly pining for one another; the UST here was palpable from the first page. They were a very sweet couple and their story was absolutely delightful – unsurprisingly, because it seems Keira Andrews can do no wrong in my eyes.
Perfect mix! I read this in one go...which wasn't especially hard since it comes in under 100 pages but more than that, I didn't want to put it down. I LOVED their first kiss...scripted and otherwise! I LOVED their winter adventures. I LOVED the family acceptance. I LOVED their unsure steps that became very sure! I just....loved it.
If you're looking for a holiday sweet hug, look no further, this is it!
While "If Only In My Dreams" is still my favorite Keira Christmas story, I have to say this one comes in as a very close second. I totally loved Cary and Ryan... and watching them fumble towards each other was endearing, though I have to admit the payoff when they finally got together was so rewarding as well. Once again Ms. Andrews has crafted an incredibly fun and sexy story. I am rapidly becoming a huge fan of her work. She creates awesome characters and writes for them beautifully!
Keira Andrews is one of my favourite authors and I really enjoyed this year’s Christmas novella The Christmas Deal.
I hate to say it, but this one left me totally cold. There are so many stereotypes all around, so much stuff left unexplained, I just couldn’t take to it. Most of all I really couldn’t follow what happens between Cary and Ryan. They go from nowhere to everywhere and ended up somewhere.
Maybe that's not quite fair, but I really missed the feels and the connection between the guys something going beyond the physical..And some decent relationship development. Comments like "you're the best I've ever had. Knew you would be." (after sex) made me cringe and squirm.
And there's simply too much family. Yes, yes, I know that's part of a 'typical' Christmas story, but ... darn, I didn't care for any of them.
This sweet kissing co-stars tale is all wrapped up in a warm and cozy setting. We get family, board games, and spiked eggnogs all aglow with sparkling tree lights and glow in the dark stars!
Actors Ryan and Cary have chemistry galore on screen, but can they have that heat and connection off screen too? For real? Come see the power of Christmas and reindeer jammies in action. :)
A no-big-surprises Christmas read to help you get the happy, holiday mood rolling.
Ryan and Cary were adorable in this short holiday story. I loved that they both were alternately shy and unsure at times and confident and determined at others. I enjoyed both characters but would have liked the story to be longer. I wanted to know more about Cary's family dynamic and his relationship with his GF. I was totally smitten with the cabin in the Great White North and Ryan's family.
But this one was enjoyable nonetheless. Keira Andrews is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. And this friends-to-lovers, bi-for-you, mountain-cabin holiday book pressed a lot of the right buttons.
My last holiday book until next year. A good one to end with!
PS: I'm kind fascinated with the whole "ice fishing" thing. I really want to try it sometime...bucket list!
Just a short sweet holiday bon-bon. Cary is Hollywood royalty (his father and grandfather are actors) and Ryan is a sweet guy from Michigan co-starring with Cary in a TV show called "Space Academy" playing a gay couple. Ryan is out and Cary is straight .... right? Rather than go with his girlfriend to a spa for a holiday cleanse, Cary spends the holiday with Ryan and his family - ice fishing, snowball fights, cookies and milk for Santa, the whole shebang. There's a miscommunication of EPIC proportions, but it all ends well with a sweet HEA. 4 stars.
August 2023 This hit the spot. A quick, fun read with no real drama. Sweet!!
2021 review This is a cute Christmas short story. I feel like I know everything about the characters. The first misunderstanding between them was good in that it played out realistically. The 2nd, about Ryan basically forcing Cary to come out as bi and tell the world he's with Ryan, that was kinda hard to take but it ended quickly so all is okay. A happy ending for all, and to all a good night. 😁
3 stars for the story because it was cute, but not amazingly so. A good solid read that will make you smile.
