Blake et Mortimer #26

La Vallée des immortels - Tome 2 : Le Millième Bras du Mékong

Rate this book

Yves Sente was born in Brussels in 1964. When he was little, he read La Marque Jaune, Jacobs' masterpiece, over and over again. Little did he know at that age that The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer would determine his destiny...!
In 1998, while he was working for Le Lombard, he worked with the cartoonist André Juillard on the script of La machination Voronov, a new episode of the Blake and Mortimer, a Cold War story acclaimed by critics and the public. Yves Sente then went on to write Les Sarcophages du 6e continent, where he reveals the young life of Professor Mortimer. He confirmed his writing talents with La Vengeance du Comte Skarbek (Dargaud; The Revenge of Count Skarbek, Europe Comics) and then Thorgal (Le Lombard; Cinebook/Europe Comics in English), taking over for Jean Van Hamme alongside Rosinski.

Second and last instalment in this story arc. Yves Sente has put together a very good thriller, combining socio-politics with a dusting of scifi, that takes its roots in E.P. Jacobs’s famous Espadon trilogy.

What can I say? The story works, even if a little tortuous. But then, they usually are :0) Berserik and Van Dongen’s art is beautiful and in accordance with the creator’s style, and the ones of ‘la ligne claire’. I enjoyed it and spent a couple of hours immersed in this world with my beloved characters. Let’s face it, however. These new titles are great but they’ll never be on par with Jacob’s original titles, which have a little ‘je-ne-sais-quoi’ extra, and that is the way it should be :0)

It seems that Blake & Mortimer are set in a November/December release so that makes it a lovely Christmas present, even if that means I have to wait a month for enjoying a new comic that is in essence a sequel and closing part of a story started a year ago.

Any how as we continue the story Mortimer gets kidnapped to repair it seems a Redwing airplane that has been captured by a warlord who considers him to be the next Emperor of the world following the history of China's first Emperor.
Blake and a Chinese agent follow him into the golden triangle to free their friend from the hands of this evil warlord. Mortimer finds his friend Nashir in captivity and has to go great and even mythical lengths to save his life.
At the same time Olrik, their everlasting nemesis, has found a way into Hong Kong's secret weapon and is planning to abuse it for his new employer.

Another interesting but wordy installment, a lot of text this time, and it could have used some more action. But overal an excellent new story brought to conclusion with the promise of a new book next year. This series seems to be still going strong and is still very enjoyable and recognizable for it readers who started with Edgar P. Jacobs.

Looking forward to the next story in 2020.

I started and stopped this one so many times that even though I did like it once I got past the halfway point, the fact that gave up so often means I'm only giving it the three stars.

This (together with the first part) must be one of the most convoluted stories in the entire series. It's a giant stew of history and espionage with some science fiction and a dose of fantasy tossed in as well. There are too many characters with difficult names, many competing factions to keep track of, set amidst the post-WWII conflict between Chinese communists, nationalists, independent warlords, gangsters, and the British in Hong Kong. But it's the long, confusing legend of the first emperor, revealed through old manuscripts and artifacts that bogs this one down. The action comes to a halt several times as the old legend is told. Literally, it's Mortimer telling another guy "Hey, we've got some time now, translate a bit more of that manuscript for me."

I would say a huge part of plot -- the part that is responsible for this story's length -- is resolved a bit too neatly. And the part of the plot at the British Hong Kong secret base feels almost tacked on so that Olrik can be jammed into the tale. (Because what's a Blake and Mortimer book without Olrik, right?)

It all hangs together well eventually, but it takes quite awhile to get there. I suspect that I would like this much more on a re-read now that I understand where the story is going, but keeping track of everything is pretty daunting at first.

Me encantan.

Qué puedo decir, si a mí me encanta...

One of the best instalments, and better than most of the original Jacobs stories, which often are too verbose and border on the absurd. This one strikes the right balance, word count, style, etc. The professor doesn't come across as an idiot, which unfortunately is the case in quite a few post-Jacobs volumes. Kudos to the artistic team for the relatively seamless integration of sci-fi, fantasy and alternative history elements in a "realistic" historical setting. Also, Miss Ylang Ti is hot.

O desenho e o traço respeitam o original.
Gostei imenso de ler e abstrair nesta época do virus corona.
