About the author

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

His writings includes over 120 short stories, 10 novelettes, 5 novels, 3 historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews. Krishnamurthy’s witty, incisive comments on politics, literature, music and other forms of art were looked forward to with unceasing interest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of ‘Kalki’, ‘Ra. Ki’, ‘Tamil Theni’, ‘Karnatakam’ and so on.

The success that Krishnamurthy attained in the realm of historical fiction is phenomenal. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels. Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

இது கல்கி அவர்களின் மூன்றாவது சமூக நாவல். சரித்திர நாவலான பார்த்திபன் கனவு எழுதும் அதே காலத்தில் தான் இந்த புத்தகத்தை எழுதியுள்ளார் அமரர் கல்கி. ஒரு சாதாரண கதை, சாதாரண தொகுப்பு, ஆஹா என்று சொல்லும் அளவிற்கு எதுவும் பிரமாதமாக இல்லை ஆனால் படிக்கும் வரை சலிக்கவில்லை. கோவையில் நடக்கும் ஒரு காதல் கதை அதில் காலா காலமாக நடக்கும் சினிமா பாணியில் உள்ள கதைக்களம். ஹீரோ காங்கிரஸ்காரன், ஹீரோயின் ஒரு சாதாரண பெண், அவள் மேல் காதல் கொள்ளும் வில்லன். ஹீரோ சாதாரண ஆள், ஹீரோயின் பாவப்பட்ட பெண், வில்லன் பெரிய தொழிலதிபர். வில்லனுக்கு ஹீரோயின் மேல காதல் ஆனால் ஹீரோயின் ஹீரோ மேல் காதல் வசம் பெற்றால். ஹீரோ வில்லன் சண்டை, கிளைமாக்ஸ்,வில்லன் திருந்தினான். இதுவே மகுடபதி.
அமரர் கல்கி புத்தகத்தில் (படித்தது வரை) - வரலாற்று நாவலாக இருந்தால் சோழன் அல்லது சோழன் சார்ந்த மனிதன் ஹீரோ, புத்தப்பிக்ஷு, காலாமுகன் போன்றவர்கள் வருவது வழக்கம். அதே போல சமூக நாவலில் காங்கிரஸ்காரன் ஹீரோ என்பது வழக்கமாகிவிட்டது. அதில் ஆங்காங்கே மகாத்மா காந்தி, விடுதலை போன்ற சம்பவங்களும் உண்டு.
மொத்தத்தில் சாதாரண சமூக நாவல், ஒரு முறை மாற்றத்திற்காக படிக்கலாம். முன்பே கூறியவாறு ஆஹா ஓஹோ என்று இல்லை அதே சமயம் சலிக்கவும் இல்லை.

“Magudapathi” is a short Tamil novel set in Coimbatore in the 1930s. Written by Kalki, the story traces the journey of the protagonist Magudapathi, who is a freedom fighter, Senthiru, a damsel in distress and Kallipatti Kaarkoda Koundar, the rich and cruel man who stops at nothing to get what he wants. The story moves swiftly through the hardships faced by the characters, all the while focusing on the pre-independent Indian times and the social issues. Kalki, who was an Independence activist and a social critic himself, pens in his own style against polygamy, forced marriages and the bravery of the people in participating in the Non co-operation movement back then. The language is simple, the story is engaging with ample twists and turns, the characters are loveable - you root deeply for Periyannan and Pankajam makes you giggle.

Special love for the book because Kalki always roots for female education and liberty. Also because the tale unfolds in Coimbatore! If memory serves right, this one of the earliest Tamil novels I ever read. A perfect breezy read.

கல்கி பெண்ணியம் பேசுபவர் என்பதை என்னைப்போன்ற கல்கிதாசர்களுக்கு நன்றாய் தெரிந்திருக்கும். இக்கதையும் பெண்ணியத்தை மையமாய் கொண்டு எழுதப்பட்டதுதான். Gandhi Irwin திட்டம் கைவிடப்பட்டு நாட்டில் காங்கிரஸ் காரர்களை மோசமாக கையாண்ட காலக்கட்டத்தை மையமாக கொண்டு இந்த நாவல் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஓடைகரை, காதல், சில வரலாற்று நிகழ்வுகள், மற்றும் அதோடு பின்னப்பட்ட கதை களம் - இதுதான் மகுடபதி நாவல்.

Started off with the story by thinking that it belongs to early 1900s but the name of the place and the surroundings where the story took place dragged me to read it. Of course, it is Coimbatore, a beautiful city blessed with wonderful weather.

The story is very interesting and it can be finished in a day or two. Got to know about the pre-independence times and patriotism in youth. Kalki has weaven the story by blending it with moments of love, happiness and sadness, experienced by the characters. It was like a crime novel story in some places and the eagerness to read the next next pages was fantastic.

I don't know why this story doesn't deserve 5 stars from a number of readers but I love this story particularly the climax which was set on a natural abode. Must 📚. Please give it a try and hope you will enjoy it too 😉.

சுமாரான வாசிப்பு. வழக்கமான கதைகள், திரைப்படங்களின் முக்கிய கதாபாத்திரங்கள் போல், அதி புத்திசாலிகளாக இல்லாமல், மனிதர்கள் பதட்டமான சூழ்நிலைகளில் இயல்பாய் தடுமாறுவதாய் தான் முதலில் தோன்றியது. ஆனால் அனைத்து சூழ்நிலைகளிலும் அனைத்து கதை மாந்தர்களும் முட்டாள்தனமாய் செயல்படுவது போல் இருந்தது, மிகுந்த சலிப்பை ஏற்படுத்தியது. காட்சிகளும், கதை களங்களின் தொடர்ச்சியும் திருப்தி அளிக்கவில்லை. ஒரு வேளை கதை வெளி வந்த காலத்தில் படித்திருந்தால் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் நல்ல அபிப்பிராயம் வந்திருக்கலாம்.

இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைவதற்கு முன், காந்தி - இர்வின் ஒப்பந்தம் கைவிடப்பட்ட காலக்கட்டத்தில், கோவை நகரை மையமாக வைத்து எழுதப்பட்ட சமூக ~ காதல் குறுநாவல் மகுடபதி. அமரர் கல்கியே எழுதியிருந்தாலும் அப்படி ஒன்றும் ஓஹோ என்று இந்தக் கதையைப் பற்றி ஒன்றும் சொல்வதற்கில்லை. கல்கியின் எளிமையான எழுத்து நடையினால் இக்கதையை ஒரே மூச்சில் படிக்க முடிந்தது.
