7/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of the best comedy series I've ever had the pleasure of reading. One thing I especially like about it is how almost all of it still holds up all these years later. Only a scant few jokes like the villain's enjoyment of wearing dresses would raise an eyebrow today as not having aged well in the near-15 years since it was written.

Nextwave is a series about a group of D-List Marvel heroes teaming up to fight evil. They are made up of Monica Rambeau (Aka Spectrum), Tabby (Aka Boom Boom), Aaron Stack (Aka Machine Man), Elsa Bloodstone, and the Captain. One remarkable thing about this short-lived run is how much of an impact it had despite being treated as non-canon for a very long time. Monica Rambeau got to be heavily involved in the unofficial sequel in Captain America & The Mighty Avengers, Aaron Stack was completely reimagined from a boring "robot who wants to know what it is to be human" trope into basically Bender from Futurama, Elsa Bloodstone got a complete redesign that she carries with her to this day, and I'm not sure if anything notable happened about Tabby but whatever she's still fun! Sadly the Captain has not seen much since this run aside from a brief cameo in the (2013? I think) run of Nova.

Anyway, this series is basically 6 stories that are 2 issues long each about the Beyond Corporation and how the team fights off against silly and weird things. It starts off "realistic" enough against a legitimate threat and villain with Fin Fang Foom, but quickly devolves into mutant cats, flying koalas, and broccoli people. The comedy writing is very strong throughout and occasionally gets into some pretty dark areas, but there's always a one-liner around the corner to keep things from ever getting too down. The art by Stuart Immonen is great as well.

Sadly there's not a whole lot to say about this series. I could go into the individual stories, but doing so would kind of spoil them. There's only so many ways I can say "the art is good" and "it's funny" because a comedy series doesn't lean on having a super engaging story to tell. So long as it's humorous it works as comedy, and this definitely worked for me on every single level.

All I can really say is reiterating what I already have. This is a great team. This run was influential in the development of a lot of the main characters. The art is good. The comedy is top notch. And it is absolutely one of my favorite comics of all time. 10/10 5/5 and whatever other perfect scores you want to hand out, but you should read Nextwave

So. Ellis being Ellis. I'm not going to judge the man. The story? I enjoyed it. A lot. The humour, and the sarcasm directed at super-heroes in general and Marvel in particular, is a bit too on-the-nose, to be honest. But I have to say I didn't expect it. And it's surprising they let him get away with it.

But now, Imonnen. Wow. Just wow. I haven't seen anything by him in a long time (unsurprising, I've been not-really-reading-comic-books for quite some time) and I was amazed. I loved this book. It's dynamic, it's strong, it's sexy, it's fantastic. Loved loved it.

So, there it is. Get it, read it, have fun, enjoy it. And weep because there won't be more. I guess.

Warren Ellis is at it again writing another super hero team no one has ever heard of. This a much tamer version of the Authority and Planetary which he both wrote and I highly recommend reading them. This time around he's writing for Marvel comics and the team consist of Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) just have to make that distinction because there's at least four people who have had the name . Machine Man , Boom Boom and two other c-list characters fill out the team. Is it funny ? yes, Is it worth reading ? Yes, if you're in the mood for a quick distraction and not have to put much work into characters backstory and just the joy of reading a fun comic with amazing art by Stuart Immonen.

More goodness from Warren Ellis

Admittedly, I'm a fan of Warren Ellis. Every chance I get, I get an Ellis comics and read it. This one I purchased 3 years ago and just today finally sat down and read the whole story. And, it was fun and funny and fresh as if it was written yesterday. Cause Ellis writes books that are timeless.
I don't know what the highest compliment is for a Warren Ellis book except... no one does it better.

Warren Ellis gets silly

This is Warren Ellis getting paid to write the silliest thing he could with as many D-list characters as he could find. The book is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s not dumb but a lot of dumb things happen in the book. When the final two villains are revealed you see just how silly this whole thing was. It’s far from his best work but he’s one of the few writers who could write something this silly and get away with it.
