Join guild and avoid being thrown in jail: working on that.
Avoid losing BFF in weird heist gone wrong: definite fail.
Survive in a world not my own where everyone wants me dead: not going so great (note to self – pick up more weapons).
My name is Tira Misu. I don’t know where I’m from. I don’t know where I’m going. All I know right now are two things: I’m going to get my best friend back, and I’m going to have fun doing it.
After all, there’s no point in being a demon if you’re not willing to raise a little hell.

Fun, fun, and more fun! With this author's trademark wit and heart, and an wonderfully original take on demons running around the neighbourhood, I gobbled Tira's first adventure then leapt into the next. WOW! Sassy, shoes, compassionate, wickedly great pacing, and did I mention sizzle? I'm so glad I gave this to myself for my birthday!!! Very highly recommended.
Yeah, it's a fantasy novel, but there are some things that just make the story unbelievable. The point for me was early on, when the main character and her friend who are both I think 17, receive a dead drop of gear for a illegal job. Whoever set up the job just gave these kids combat rifles, swords, and military fatigues... Just like that. And the orphanage that is run by people that hate them for some reason trained them all in using guns and swords? It just makes not sense to me even if these kids are inhuman pawns.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first installment in The Guild of Shadows. Marie does a good job building a "trust no one" scenario while avoiding common tropes. The characters are interesting and sympathetic. We get to see reality from various points of view, and these different perspectives lend the world credence. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
this book *could* have been good with a little effort. the prose was slick and comic, but the world-building and character dimension were completely lacking. Characters bumbled around in circles, never winning a single fight. At 67 percent, we were given a vague and unrealistic goal of "a cannister." We didn't even know where it was until the main character magically finds it on the last page. Something this valuable and world shaking would have at least been kept locked up in a safe--something which would have stymied her completely. I'm not sure how she suddenly became competent--it was just that time in the plot.

This was an awesome book I am truly hoping to find the next ones offered to see where tira, the guilds, clay and everything wrapped in"shadows" leads to and what is inside this canister or if it will be yet a different assignment...so stay tuned same time....same bat chanbel
I loved the story and the characters. Someone should have taken Tira aside and warned her of the capers she found herself in. Constantly being lead astray until "schools out" and believing she had no where to go. A lot of action, suspense, and a small amount of gore. Love every minute of it and look forward to the next in series. Yes, this means I recommend this book and my new author love.
This is the first thing by this author that I've read and I'm happy to say it won't be the last it's brilliant, well written with outstanding storylines, characters that are well fleshed out, and just enough backstory to keep things interesting. Be sure not to miss this first in series it promises to be epic, Baz
Interesting and different, with a decent plot line. The story is good, but doesn't have much depth. It was an enjoyable read, though. The characters are interesting but I wish there was a little more emotion.
I don't usually read YA novels but I was drawn into Tira's life immediately! I empathised with her character and was wishing and hoping with her. The novel had an Amazing world building storyline! I can't wait to read more!!
I liked this, downloaded it because it looked Ok after reading the burb glad I did as it was good kept me glued to the pages and it was something a little different.
