A fun read during turbulent times. I deliberately chose this book as I wanted suspense and murder along with hint of love. With a K-9 on the cover (and my friend GIN loving dogs) I had to read this.

When a couple was murdered and a child was the lone witness, the case reminded the cops of another murder with the same M.O. twenty years ago. Nate with his K-9 partner Murphy was soon on the right track to protect the child and her aunt Willow and get to the murderer.

My first book by author Laura Scott, I relished it with a gusto. I needed a whodunit which didn't have too many gruesome scenes despite being a Copycat Killer. The author did a brilliant job in keeping my mind distracted for three hours.

There was action and suspense in the entire plot. Romance too awakened between the lead characters but you know me. I didn't read much of that. So I skipped that and went to the basic investigation. I loved the whole trope of K-9 and cop getting to the truth.

Camaderie and friendships were well shown. The writing kept me stuck to my kindle with minimal stress. Characters were dynamic, and I basically didn't want to solve anything. I just wanted to escape and live inside the book. Thanks to the talented author, I soon got back a small amount of my sanity with this pre-midnight read.

A fun murder mystery.

Copycat Killer by Laura Scott has Willow Emery finding her brother and sister-in-law dead with their toddler, Lucy crying nearby. The killings are identical to a crime that occurred twenty years prior. Detective Nate Slater and his K-9 partner, Murphy take the traumatized pair home to find Willow’s apartment ransacked. Are the crimes tied together? Slater works to keep Willow and Lucy safe while searching for the elusive criminal. As Slater spends time with Willow, he begins to fall for her. Slater knows, though, that marriage and family are not in his future. Can Willow change his mind? Copycat Killer is the first book in True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn series. We are introduced to the staff of the newly formed Brooklyn K-9 Unit. Detective Nate Slater is nearby when Willow calls 9-1-1. He is surprised at the similarities to a 20-year-old cold case where the killer left 4-year-old Penelope McGregor as the only witness. Her older brother, Bradley was at a sleepover. Bradley is now a K-9 officer with their unit and Penelope is the desk clerk. I thought Copycat Killer was a suspenseful story. There is action that kept the book moving forward at a fast pace. I liked the camaraderie between the members of the K-9 unit and how sweet they were to Lucy. I, of course, loved following the investigation as they searched for the guilty party. The romance is sweet and natural. I was amazed at the talents of the K-9 dogs. They have amazing sniffers. I was disappointed that the murder investigation is not wrapped up in Copycat Killer. I hope we get the answers in the next True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn novel. I especially enjoyed Willow’s strong faith and how she shared it with Lucy and Nate. Copycat Killer is an intriguing suspense with clever canines, a crazed killer, a cute kid, an affectionate aunt and determined detectives.

Detective Nate Slater is investigating a double homicide. The deeper he gets in his investigation, the more he realizes that it is very similar to a cold case of over two decades. Nate must tread very carefully as his only witness is a little girl named Lucy. Although wanting to further traumatize the child, Nate tries to ask delicate questions to learn more, as the couple murdered were her parents.

When Noah get to the scene, he sees Lucy in the arms of her aunt Willow Emery. When the danger continues to touch the lives of Willow and Lucy, Nate and his partner, K-9 officer Murphy, stay close their their sides. Lucy not only responds to Nate, but she especially connects with Murphy. Meanwhile, Willow is immediately working hard to ensure Lucy's happiness and future.

Lucy is not the only one responding in this situation. Noah finds that he is very drawn to Willow and the feeling is more than mutual. Keeping their distance seems the wise thing to due especially since danger is dogging their every step.

What a touching story. Despite the fact that the man killed was Willow's brother, she never lost sight of her faith. I loved that aspect to this story. I also loved Lucy and her connection to the dog Murphy. That was very endearing. Copycat Killer is an excellent start to a new series and I cannot wait to read future books. There are quite a few people in the K-9 unit and I look forward to reading their stories

Many thanks to Love Inspired Suspense and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I love K-9 mysteries/suspense and Copycat Killer didn't disappoint! While Willow is trying to make sure her young niece is safe, she stumbles onto a double murder and finds herself being stalked!

The K-9 series is enjoyable and I like the fact that different authors write about the same group of officers throughout the series. It's fun to be introduced to upcoming characters or find out what old favorites are doing. This was Nick and Willow's story and it was interesting to see how they overcame each of their pasts to work together to solve the mysteries. Willow is independent and has her faith while Nick finds his way. The action kept me reading and the lovable K-9's were so much fun. The book can be read as a standalone but it's enjoyable to follow the squad's adventures!

I'm on to the next book in the series!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed are my own.

Synopsis:

Murder strikes close to home

for a new K-9 unit in Brooklyn

When a double homicide is strikingly familiar to a twenty-year-old cold case, Detective Nate Slater is rattled by the parallels. Nate’s rough past means he always keeps an emotional distance…but in this case getting closer is the only way they’ll all survive. (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well developed and well rounded. When Willow finds her brother and sister-in-law dead in their house and her niece playing outside, her world is turned upside down. Her biggest concern is keeping her niece, Lucy safe. She will have help with that from Nate, the detective who took the case, and his canine partner, Murphy. They are members of a newly opened K-9 Unit opened in Brooklyn, The case is very similar to a twenty year old case, and Nate is very aware of the similarities. He will do anything to solve the case and keep Willow and Lucy safe.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the book from the very beginning. There was a faith-based feel to this book and I liked the way that Willow did not lose her faith, even with everything going on. The plot flowed well and had me turning the pages as fast as I could.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted Christian mystery and suspense book. I am looking forward to reading about the other members of the K-9 Unit.

A double homicide eerily mirrors that of one that happened 20 years ago.

Willow Emery's brother and his wife are going through a difficult time, so Willow offers to take care of her niece, Lucy. But when Lucy's parents are brutally murdered, she finds herself also the target of an unknown killer. Willow is an aspiring photographer, and loves her niece dearly, she is determined to do everything that she can to help them solve the case and keep her niece safe.

Nate Slater is a cold case detective, he likes to be emotionally distant, and doesn't want to get involved in the of the people he works with, but Willow and Lucy are different, and he takes on responsibility for their safety. I like how being with them helps him to open up and make peace with his past, taking a second look at things that he had been overlooking.

I loved how this book follows up on a dog who was a puppy in the previous book, showing how Murphey has really matured and grown into his potential. Lucy is adorable child and Murphy is excellent with her. Nate and Willow are strong leads, who compliment each other well, bring out the best in each other. I really liked how Willow was open about her faith, and I admired her authenticness.

This book is filled with a good balance of action, faith, and good relationship building. It sets up the next books in the series well, with a strong plot, and great setting.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

"Copycat Killer" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed the characters and cared about what happened to them. Nate fears that he'll be abusive like his father, so he's sworn off relationships. Willow helped him to realize that he's not his father. The romance went very fast--after knowing each other for a few days under intense circumstances, Nate switched from "no relationships" to "marry me?" The suspense came from the repeated attacks on Willow. Nate and his K9 partner (with his team) worked to track down the bad guy attacking Willow while also working the double-murder (which was a separate case that wasn't solved). There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable suspense novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

3.5 stars Copycat Killer is the first book in the True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn series. It was a quick and enjoyable romantic suspense. I flew through it in one sitting. I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of the book. There are two mysteries in the book. One is resolved and the other is left on a cliffhanger, but I have a feeling it will be a storyline that the span a few books in the series. The one mystery that was resolved was very engaging and surrsing.

For the most part, I did enjoy the romance part of the book. It was sweet, clean romance. I was a bit hesitant to buy into the speed of the HEA at the end, however, The story takes place over only a couple of days, so it was a bit fast for me. Still, I did enjoy them together. The rest of the K-9 team is introduced briefly in this book. I'm assuming they will be featured in later books. I do recommend this one.

Copycat Killer was an okay read. I enjoyed the copycat aspect, but for the most part I wasn't invested in the storyline. The romance was not a favorite as I just thought it moved too fast and things that happened were not believable to me.

All in all, Copycat Killer was not for me. I thought it was an okay one-time read.

I enjoyed this canine mystery. I will defiantly read more if these books.
Detective Nate Slater and his canine partner have a murder to solve, his only witness is a little girl. Nate must protect Lucy and her aunt while trying to solve the case. This case is too familiar to a 20 year old unsolved case. Nate and his canine must solve this case.

I loveeee this book, I'm a big fan of K-9 Unit series, Man with uniform with amazing K-9, oh yesss I can't not love it, then add an easy-to-read chilling suspense story to it, then it becomes my fav suspense read. The one that captured me from the get go and since then I just can't put it down.
It has great story, although the big mystery hasn't reach a conclusion it will be continuing to the next book, It still full of suspense and actions,
It has great characters and couple, I adore Nate and Lucy, they're definitely match made in heaven, this couple put a big smile on my face, they're just so sweet together.
Definitely a perfect book for anyone who is looking for an easy-to-read suspense mystery book.

Just not my thing. This was way more of a romance than I expected. And the most annoying kind of romance: two people determined that they can’t be in a relationship, but yet they are swapping “I love you” declarations 72 hours after meeting. Ugh. Police story was okay, but not terribly developed or realistic.

Relatively short book. Wholesome. I can understand why this could be a fun read for some.

“Copycat Killer” is a by-the-numbers murder/stalking mystery … most of the time.
Willow finds her brother and sister-in-law shot dead, their young daughter, Lucy, has been spared. It's a double murder that replicates in detail a crime from two decades ago.
And someone is stalking and threatening Willow (thus bringing a huge amount of attention to the one thing they are trying to conceal).
It's a good thing that hunky Nate and his K9 Murphy are constantly on hand to keep her safe. Not, of course, that any hankypanky is possible for she is a God-fearing woman – there's a hug and two passion-filled kisses, but that's your lot!
Of course Nate believes that he is unworthy of Willow.
The longer the book goes on the more God gets involved, and it is not a good idea. I can see something coming down the tracks, the pagan Nate finally breaking down and appealing to God to save Willow and Lucy.
Yep, there it is – I didn't have long to wait! “He wrapped one arm around her shoulders, bringing her in for a three-way hug. “I put my faith in God and prayed. He showed me the way.”
He gets shot shortly afterward - that'll learn him!
It all goes downhill from there with sappy declarations of love, belief in the Almighty and the obligatory HEA (through marriage of course!)
It's quite readable until the importance of belief in God begins to shoehorn into the story. And, despite the Almighty turning up on a very regular basis towards the end of the book, there is absolutely no evidence that He (or She) actually contributed to the solution.
1.5 Stars.

This story is set in Brooklyn and features a squad of police dog handlers, one of whom gets involved when a young woman needs help. The lady has found her relatives murdered in their home and their small child has to be rescued and cared for. A scent-trained Labrador is the main dog of the K9 squad in this book and each book will follow another dog and handler.

While I liked all the series written in this way, and still enjoy them, by now they do feel formulaic I have to say; not the authors' fault as they are each doing a great job. But the pattern of events is usually the same, leading to some really pointless break-ins, and the running thread has to be identified early so we can ignore it, because it won't be resolved until the last book. If you are new to the K9 series idea, this will all seem fantastic, and if you are more used to them like me, a bit wearying.

I like the work of the scent-trained dog and the resilient characters. The book contains scenes of violence and a serial killer, but is otherwise suitable for anyone from teens to adults. Read if you dare.

Ah, to find the guy who I would instantly know would be a wonderful father after 12 hours and have him propose marriage to me after 3 days.

NO.

I would quit reading Love Inspireds, as so many are insta-love, but there's the occasional one that really shines, so I can't.

I have been hooked on K-9 stories ever since I saw the movie K-9 years ago and this was what made me request the book when Harlequin Fiction contacted me about a blog tour opportunity for the title.

In Copycat Killer by Laura Scott, Willow Emery takes a routine visit to her brother and sister-in-law's house, only to find them dead. Lucy, their 3- year-old daughter, is crying and Willow does her best to console her scared niece while she wonders what happened.

I felt glad they had each other and was so scared for them. Willow calls 911 and Detective Nate Slater is called to the scene. He's not alone, and we meet his dog, Murphy. They are part of the recently opened K-9 unit. As he calls in colleagues to help his conviction is stronger that the crime is identical to another copycat killer crime in the area 20 years ago.

Back then, it was 4-year-old Penelope McGregor who was the the only witness to the murder of her parents as her older brother Bradley was at a sleepover at the time.

Nate automatically feels he has to help Lucy go somewhere safe. They leave with only the clothes on their backs.
Willow's apartment should be safe, but armed with basic supplies they turn up there only to find the place burgled.
Adrenaline and duty take over as Nate takes Willow and Lucy under his wing. Willow is too scared to be alone and knows Lucy has no one in the world apart from her now that her parents are gone. It was really humbling to witness how she and Nate fought to keep the little girl safe.
I felt glad Lucy was young enough to not really know the full extent of the heartbreaking situation she was in. Murphy was a comfort and help to them all.

As 2 parallel subplots, we have Nate's growing feelings for Willow and also Willow's strong faith and how she involves Lucy in that with bedtime prayer and overall positivity despite being scared herself.

The small cast of characters as well as the way each character is developed and realistic is what made Copycat Killer so special as a book. It evoked strong emotions in me very quickly, worry, sadness and empathy as well as a sense that I just NEEDED to know what was going to happen next.

It was action-packed, emotional daring gripping suspenseful romantic and a tearjerker all rolled into one.

It's a quick listen (or read) but that helps the pace and there's never a dull scene.
This is only book one in the series, I definitely want to review more!

Laura Scott is a new author to me but her skill at intertwining personal, emotional plots with the excitement, challenges and action of a K-9 department is impressive. I was in awe of how Nate and Murphy responded with a professional but also incredibly sensitive and human manner.

Thanks to Laura Scott and Harlequin for my ARC in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Willow Emery is concerned about her three-year-old niece Lucy. She believes her brother Alex and his wife Debra are neglecting Lucy. Last time Willow stopped in to visit the house was trashed and filty dirty. Liquor bottles and empty takeout containers were everywhere and there was practically no food in the house. She sould have called Child Protective Services but wanted to give her brother a chance to clean up his act and do right by Lucy. She is back to see if there is an improvement. As she approached the house she noticed the gate was open. What? Now she notices the front door is partway open. Something is very wrong. She enters and hears sobs. There's little Lucy hovering over the very dead bodies of her mother and father and crying. There's blood all over. They both had been shot dead. Willow's 911 call results in the fast arrival of K-9 Detective Nate Slater and his yellow lab partner Murphy. This is just the beginning of the deaths and the threats.

K-9 Detective Nate Slater and his partner Murphy respond to a 911 call and pull up to what turns out to be a horrific scene. A woman with a little girl was standing by a tree outside a neglected house and he told them to wait in his SUV while he waited for backup before entering the house. After his backup arrived and a quick inspection in the house he went back out to his SUV to question the woman and child. The little girl is a witness. He knows he needs to tread carefully. What little she could tell him chills him. This is eerily similar to a cold case murder from twenty years ago. Is it the same murderer? What is the motive? Where was this murderer for twenty years? Or is this a copycat?

Copycat Killer by Laura Scott is the first book in Harlequin's series True Blue K-9 Unit: Brooklyn. Luara Scott begins this series with lots of action, suspense, caring and camaraderie. She introduces the characters of the new Brooklyn K-9 unit in a unique way. First some are introduced to the heroine and her niece via a tour of the unit as a way to make their visit to the station less stressful. Then Willow and Lucy get to visit the kennel next door to see some of the dogs. I admire Ms. Scott's characterization of Willow and Nate as strong, caring people who both had adversity to overcome in their youth. The plot flows well and kept me turning the pages. I hope the rest of the series will be as thrilling and entertaining as this book. Next book up is Chasing Secrets by Heather Woodhaven.

My Thoughts on Copycat Killer
Copycat Killer Book Cover
Copycat Killer
Suggested Beverage Pairing: Chamomile Tea
Characterization
Willow Emery is a single woman determined to provide a better life for her niece, but she doesn’t expect the custody change to happen by murder. Nor does she expect to be stalked herself. Now she has to keep both herself and her niece safe in ways she never imagined.

Willow becomes a light for the detective who has assigned himself as her guardian. With each step being more dangerous than the last, can she convince Nate that God is a loving father?

Nate Slater is determined to solve a murder that is identical to a cold case. He doesn’t need faith to do that. He also doesn’t need to find himself getting attached to Willow and her niece. He can’t love someone with anger running through his veins.

Nate has to deal with his genetics and his faith to finally find his way to a HEA.

The Plot
Pushed together by a traumatic double murder, Willow and Nate become joined at the hip for several days. The plot quickly transitions from a murder plot to Willow being stalked, attempted kidnapping, and attempted murder. There seems to be no connection between the double murder and her stalker, but how could both situations happen simultaneously and not be connected?

Nate feels responsible for everything that goes wrong throughout the investigation, yet never gives up. If he isn’t immediately with Willow and her niece Lucy, then another member of his team is assigned to them.

Copycat Killer is full of mystery and suspense. The interweaving lines are well-written and exciting.

This book was undoubtedly a five star book until the final chapter. Honestly, I’m giving it 4 1/2 stars, but most sites will only let me mark single stars. So, on the sites it’s getting four. Why? Because the hero obviously fell in love with the heroine in a few short days, but going from told fear of being an abusive spouse/parent to a full on proposal in a few short days felt rushed and unrealistic.

I received a ARC copy of this book from the publisher at my request. Opinions included in this review are mine and mine alone.

I swear Harlequin got me with this because of the dogs. Do you know how much dogs mean to me and seeing them as a key character or component in some form of literature always makes my heart swell? As long as the dog doesn’t die, then I’m good. And no, that wasn’t a spoiler because I’m not talking about that at all. But just saying.

This was an interesting plot for me because not only do we have the romance aspect but we have the issue of the serial killer – or at least a copycat killer from over twenty years ago – and our main characters Nate and Willow trying to make sure that things don’t go wrong. Nate is the police detective with his K-9 partner that is in charge of helping to protect his key eye witness: a little girl named Lucy. Because Lucy is the only eye witness to the double homicide and has no other person to take care of her besides her aunt Willow, Nate and Willow are needing to work together to solve this case before the killer targets Lucy to finish the job, or worse.

I think having a K-9 partner helps to show that Nate does have some sort of a sensitive side especially with his past. There’s something about an animal – whether it’s a dog, cat, turtle, etc. – that helps us humans dig deeper into our feelings and what makes us the kind of people we are. Even if we feel like everything is okay with us mentally or emotionally or whatever, animals really help us learn that there are things that we can do to improve constantly. I think it was super cute to see a little bit of this partnership in the novel, even though the plot was heavy and dealt with a traumatized child and her aunt trying to survive.

Willow Emery went to visit her brother, sister-in-law, and her cute niece Lucy. She was hoping they would agree to let her raise the little girl. What she saw when she got to the house would give her night mares for many years to come. Her brother, and his wife had been killed. Lucy the little girl was the only witness. Nate, and his K-9 partner Murphy was the first on the scene. I fell in love with Murphy throughout the book. He was so patient with Lucy, and protected her at the same time. This double homicide was almost identical to an unsolved murder case from 20 years ago. Did the killer start killing again, or is it a copycat?
This was a really good book with action, suspense, and a touch of romance between the lead characters. Nate made it his mission to protect Willow and her niece Lucy. He drove them home after the scene was processed to find out someone had broken into Willow’s home, and tossed it. Could the two cases be linked?
My heart broke for Lucy. She was trying to wake up her mother and dad before Her aunt got to the house. A child that age doesn’t understand death. At least she just thought they were asleep, but still. No child should ever have to go through that. This is a book that pulled at my heart. I loved how close Lucy got to the dog. Every child needs a dog to love on. I really enjoyed this book!
Here is a sample of the book – Nate heard Willow scream. He wheeled around the corner; his heart lodged in his throat. Lucy was crying, loud screeching sobs. “Aunt Willow! Aunt Willow! Come back. Someone dressed in black with a hat pulled low over his forehead was dragging Willow toward a sedan. “Stop! Police!” Nate shouted. Realizing he might be too late, he reached down and his yellow lab’s leash. “Get him, Murphy. Get him!” His k-9 partner too off running. The man’s eyes widened and he pushed Willow to the ground and raced away, the dog giving chase.

A Double Murder Mirrors a Twenty-Five Year Old Crime

Willow is disturbed by the way her brother and his wife are neglecting her niece Lucy. When she arrives to try to persuade her brother to take better care of Lucy, she finds things much worse than she expected. Her brother and his wife have been murdered, and Lucy is clinging to her dead mother.

Nate Slater is a K9 detective in the newly formed Brooklyn K9 Unit. With his canine partner Murphy, he responds to the call about a double homicide and finds Willow cradling her niece who is the only witness to the murders.

The case is eerily similar to a case that happened twenty-five years ago. The children who survived that crime now work with the Brooklyn K9 Unit, and Nate vows to solve the present crime and perhaps the older crime. As the case unfolds, Willow and Lucy become a target, and Nate finds himself their protector with an increasing interest in Willow.

The characters in this novel draw you in. Lucy is a delightful child. Willow is a committed aunt, and Nate is the perfect hero who grows in his ability to become more open. The romance between Willow and Nate blossoms quickly, but since this is a Christian novel, there are no sex scenes.

Murphy, Nate’s canine partner, steals the show. Not only is he an outstanding police dog, but he’s very gentle with Lucy. The plot moves at a moderate pace and the ending has a bit of a twist. I think you’ll like this book if you enjoy murder mysteries with likable characters.

Title: Copycat Killer
Author: Laura Scott
Genre: Romantic suspense, Christian
Rating: 3.0 out of 5

Murder strikes close to home for a new K-9 unit in Brooklyn. When a double homicide is strikingly familiar to a twenty-year-old cold case, Detective Nate Slater is rattled by the parallels. With a child as the only witness, he and his K-9 partner must protect little Lucy and her aunt, Willow Emery. Nate’s rough past means he always keeps an emotional distance…but in this case getting closer is the only way they’ll all survive.

I enjoy romantic suspense novels, and I love faith-based stories, so combining the two should have been a home run. However, I felt like everything in this novel was too rushed, almost like we were just skimming the tip of the actual story, but not truly experiencing the details.

The double homicide in question—while probably the story arc of the entire series—isn’t the focus of this book. The romance was practically insta-love. The faith aspect of the story was a secondary detail at best, almost an afterthought even for the characters. And, while I’m not an expert in police procedures, several things felt completely unbelievable to be realistic. This felt more like a bare bones outline to me than a fully fleshed out story.

Laura Scott is honored to write for the Love Inspired Suspense line, where a reader can find a heartwarming journey of faith amid the thrilling danger. She lives with her husband of twenty-five years and has two children, a daughter and a son, who are both in college. She works as a critical-care nurse during the day at a large level-one trauma center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and spends her spare time writing romance.

I got this book because of the K-9 unit without noticing it was also categorized as "Christian Mystery & Suspense Romance." It was more romance and prayer than K-9 Unit. So much was just plain unrealistic. The romance developed way too fast. Would a real life law enforcement officer offer to spend the night sleeping on the couch of a crime victim? Would he be allowed to do that? Seems to me to be grounds for all sorts of trouble. The whole granting of custody seemed a bit shady to me. She lives in a one bedroom apartment. She just quit her job. Even if she is a relative, would children's services really place a child with her if she has no separate room for the child and no means of support for the child? Then just days after meeting her and hours after deciding to break up with her he proposes marriage and she accepts.

The secondary mystery of who trashed her apartment and why became more important than the main mystery of who murdered her brother. That crime remains unsolved at the end of this book. Though I'd like to find out if it really was the same killer from the 20 year old cold case, there is no way I'll ever read another book in the series to find out.

I did like the dog. I hope the kid has enough resilience to overcome the horrific sight of her murdered parents and to survive being yanked out of a life where she was pretty much left to her own devices and suddenly being overly controlled by her judgy aunt who has no idea how to rear a child!

When Willow Emery pulls up to her brothers’ home to check on her little niece Lucy, whom she believes is being neglected, she walks into a total disaster and a double homicide. Willow must now become Lucy’s guardian to keep her safe and loved. When Willow and Lucy arrive at Willow’s apartment, she finds her home was broken into and is a complete mess. Can this be related to her brother’s death?
Nate Slater is a K9 detective. Along with his canine partner Murphy he responds to a call that is a copycat to a double homicide that happened 25 years ago. He finds a woman and a small girl at the scene of the crime and offers to drive them home. What he finds when he gets there makes him vow to protect both Willow and Lucy at all costs.
This is the first book in the “True Blue K-9 Unit Brooklyn” series and the author Laura Scott did a brilliant job of introducing us to not only Nate, Willow, Lucky and Murphy, but also fills the reader in on the other members of the K-9 unit and a little about their backgrounds. Although one mystery is solved, one is not by the end of the book, so the reader is left wanting to find out more! I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Thank you so much to Harlequin, Laura Scott and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book to read and review.

Copycat Killer by Laura Scott is an action packed romantic suspense with a K-9 and a cute kid. Willow is checking on her niece when she realizes the parents have been murdered and her niece is a witness. Willow and her niece are adorable together.
Nate is a K9 detective and his partner is Murphy. They get called to the scene. Murphy and his interaction with Lucy was precious. They have an instinct to want to protect.
Nate realizes the case is very similar to another case from 20+ years ago that impacted their K9 Unit employees. We get to meet several members of his team. The book is part of a series but it can be read alone.
Willow and Lucy seem to be in danger and Nate is determined to keep them safe and try not to fall for both of them. They try to determine are their two cases they are working or are they related.

Sexual content – he stays on the couch to protect them, there is a kiss
Violence – there are a few deaths, attempts at kidnapping Willow,
Drugs – her brother and his wife were drug users.

I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Copycat Killer. This is the first book in the True Blue K-9 Unit Continuity Series. I always enjoy the continuity series because they are all written by my favorite LIS authors. This story (like all of Laura's books) is well written, action packed, and full of faith. You are going to love it.

Willow Emery is on her way to her brother and sister-in-law's home to talk to them about letting her raise their daughter. They aren't taking proper care of the child and she is going to do something about it. She arrives to find both parents dead and Lucy trying to wake them up. She feared the killer might still be in the house. She took Lucy outside and called 911. A K-9 Unit showed up.

Detective Nate Slater is rattled by the disturbing scene so much like a murder that took place twenty years ago. The little girl had seen the killer and described him as a bad clown. He must protect this little girl and her aunt even if he is attracted to the aunt.

A horrifying journey of a crazed killer trying to kill a witness. God has a plan for these three, a plan for a hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a good plan and not for evil.

This is the first book in a new Love Inspired series, “True Blood Canine Unit: Brooklyn”. I like the concept of this series and the first book set a high standard for the ones to follow. The suspense in this book begins in the third paragraph, as Willow Emery realizes that something is wrong in her brother’s house and she hears her young niece, Lucy, crying in the house. At that point, the story takes a turn and the suspense builds all throughout the story. I also liked the fact that we get to see Detective Nate Slater’s canine partner, Murphy, launch into action in several scenes in the book. This is a faith-based story that is not only suspenseful, but also leads the reader to be grateful for the ways that God is working in our lives in ways we might not always be aware of at the time.

There is a mystery that’s on-going at end of the book, and I’ll be reading each book in the series to follow that storyline.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
