Todd Crane isn't fond of pulling stagecoaches, but needs must when you're a part-time centaur in need of money.
Unfortunately, his temporary job lands him and ex-Marshal Amelia Crockett in the middle of a town whose population has mysteriously vanished.
To make matters worse, there are terrifying monsters lurking in the shadows, and Todd and Amy's fellow travelers are growing increasingly paranoid. Fighting the creatures is impossible. The only option is escape.
There's just one problem...when the Shadders are hunting you, you must never, ever run...
This short story is best enjoyed after having read Horseman, Book 1 of the Crockett and Crane series.
Kyle Robert Shultz is the creator of the Aftermythos, an interconnected collection of stories set in an alternate universe where fairy tales and mythology are history. Shultz is a completely ordinary human being with no remarkable qualities whatsoever. Accounts suggesting that he is a dangerous wizard exiled from a parallel reality, a cleverly-disguised magical creature passing off the history of another world as original fiction, a mysterious trickster entity described in the folklore of a circumscribed region of Wales, or a pseudonym adopted by three talking otters stacked up in a trench coat should be dismissed as not entirely accurate.

An interesting concept, and I appreciate that Shultz is exploring crossovers with other genres in his works, but this wasn't half as creepy as I expected it to be.
This had all the banter and spooky atmosphere that’s come to define the Crockett & Crane books. Slightly creepy (but not terribly so), it was so wonderful to see all the characters I love again. (Plus, Julio had some words of wisdom to share.) “Run” was a great addition to the tales of the Crockett & Crane gang!
Welp. I totally buried this book on my TBR list and just realized I hadn't read it yet. Problem solved. This was definitely one of Kyle's creepier stories. Reminded me very much of a Doctor Who episode I saw with my sister. (I'm not saying which one. You'll have to read this yourself to find out.) The story is currently only available via Kyle's Patreon.
