Hi,

A little more about me, I live in Southern California, with my two kids, and a trio of fur babies.

I work full time in the aerospace industry with some amazing scientist that were fundamental when brain storming new technologies for my universe.

I also have a culinary degree that is worthless because my kids love hotdogs, chicken nuggets and mac & cheese. But at least they love my birthday cakes so, I'll take that as a win.

I have a management and leadership degree that is utilized most when negotiating with my children and organizing time between writing, cleaning and family movie-night.

I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars. And when I'm being lazy, I like to read WTF Facts on Pintrest.

 Dazed and 😕Confused

Having read All of Ms Stone's Unexpected series books so far, and loved them all, this one was confusing to me.

However, the ADULT scenes were pretty awesome, even though I didn't understand the parts about the telepathy very well.

Too Dark for My Enjoyment --
I have absolutely no idea why I chose to review this particular book since torture is one of my top avoidance themes. I will not be detailing the sadist’s fun, but I’ll do my best to tell you about the story.

Jandy has been captured by a sadist who tortures and experiments on her, not only for his joy of causing her pain, but also because he has captured Chollar who is a Master Elder, a Cerebral, a dangerous master telepath who can also feel her pain! Chollar is an Examiner who finds the reasons things happen. Jandy has retreated to her Silk Demon mind palace – where she slips out of her conscious mind and her physical body and into her second consciousness, the “mind palace”. In her mind palace, she has hosts from whom she can take a small bit of sleep. Silk Demons like her and her father are unable to sleep. So the host provides the sleep. She can invade their dreams and force them to lose consciousness. It was this skill that Chollar wanted, to use Jandy to control someone else.

Jandy is the only one who can hear Chollar’s thoughts and they need to work together to get free. He is her one and only chance but, if they fail to get away, she won’t survive the sadist. Can they trust each other? If they can, is there anything left of them inside to reach out and care for the other, to perhaps find healing?

The concepts in this story are fascinating. It’s not a book I could thoroughly enjoy with my strong dislike of torture themes. But for those who are not squeamish, it may be interesting to you to read this one.

This novel was well written and edited, with few if any typos. If there were, it did not at all detract from my ability to enjoy this story. I must confess that this was the first novel I have read by this author in this particular series. The reading experience for me was somewhat disjointed, perhaps because this novel was never intended to be read as a standalone by someone who had not read any of the previous novels in this series. The characterization was unremarkable in this novel, and the world building was quite competent, but the plot and pacing was somewhat odd and disjointed. Also, I need to include a trigger warning for other readers who would also be disturbed by the graphic torture scenes which seemed to make up most of this novel. The development of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine of this novel was quite subpar, with the reader being told that they love each other at the end of this novel without ever witnessing the process of these two characters falling in love. I have read other novels by this author that I thoroughly enjoyed, but unfortunately, this particular title is not among them for this reader. I recommend this novel only to readers who have read all the previous books in this series. Perhaps for those readers, this novel will be quite enjoyable.

I love this series and have been anxiously awaiting this story which focuses on Chollar and Jandy. Both have landed in the hands of a diabolical Newman called Fynbar. Chollar is a Master Cerebral telepath imprisoned and looking for a way to escape. Jandy has been sold to Fynbar as a slave and ends up being turned into a cyborg against her will.

There is so much going on in this story it is hard to know where to start describing it. Jandy is half Silk Demon and we get to learn how she can steal sleep from others to meet her needs. This is a symbiotic relationship and not meant to be harmful. She also has a wonderful ability to create a mind palace for herself where she can escape and replenish herself when needed. Chollar is so strong he is able to join her in her mind palace and the sparks fly.

Jandy is another great heroine and I loved how she was able to fight her cyborg programming to escape. Along the way we have another great secondary character, Maketza, a small gipper robot who brings great humor and snark to the story.

Chollar's abilities as a Master Cerebral and lack of interpersonal skills are fun to read. So is getting to see the crew from the other Unexpected books show up to help rescue the hero and heroine who happened to be family and friends.

It is well written.

This is a book, where my rating is reflective of writing, not my feelings or enjoyment reading it. Usually I try to take everything into account, but as story is way too gruesome and leans heavily on abusive and torture scenes, I decided to disregard my personal opinion of the story itself. Does these scenes feel realistic? Yes. And that is my problem. Too mutch dark realistic feeling scenes and not enough relationship scenes or scenes with characters from previous books to balance out the story. But, that is just my personal dislike, not the books.

So, here you go. Book worth reading, unless you are looking for something light.

The Unexpected series is always... unexpected. This one is a flashback to Jandy (Remember her? Yeah, me neither - so many books, so few brain cells!). But she's back and in trouble. It's the Cerebrals again, and this time she's their toy. She has been captured, tortured and experimented on and has retreated to her mind palace. Chollar is in his own prison but finds a way to communicate with Jandy in her mind palace. He controls her, she resists and slowly they form a relationship. This is a twisting tale about trying to get their freedom and learning the meaning of love.

Chollar and Jandy

If you've read this series from the beginning you'll recognize Jandy as the BFF of the heroine from book 1 and Chollar is connected to Sci the hero from the same book. Chollar's abilities are incredibly powerful but Jandy inspires feelings he's never had much less understands. Together they free each other and bring down a sadistic villain. Both are profoundly damaged by their experiences but Jandy shows Chollar the pleasures of the flesh and the power of love. The penultimate book in the series is incredibly violent and extremely satisfying.

Unexpected Master by Layla Stone was a Wonderfully Sweet, Fantasy Read with a Feel Good HEA!

Chollar, the "H's", arrogance was warranted by his natural abilities, and Jancy, the "h's", Mind Palace was a great addition to the mix.

I liked the fact that Jancy was not a pushover, and the fact that she remained strong throughout the entire story.

This series just keeps improving with each new addition!

He's torturing her to torture him. Jandy grew up on a bordello planet. Trying to escape that fate, she is captured and sold to a madman. Fynbar is a depraved sadist. He is using his torture if Jandy to torture Chollar and break him. Jandy is facing only a future of sexual slavery until Chollar offers her a way out and a chance for something better. Together can they save each other? This is a very dark story part of the Unexpected series.

Whoa.
This was a REALLY good book.
The beginning was more sci-fi psychological thriller with hints of romance and steam. Once the main character Chollar and Jandy came out the other side together, it turned so steamy it could fog up your windows.
I would highly recommend this book.
I truly hope there is more to come from this series.
Happy reading!

I was waiting for the other otherworder:)

After the first book i was guessing Sci’s brother will get his book and it was very good addition. I do love this author always adds end in the books after a few years have passed. So for all of those just picking random number books - you need to read the series from start otherwise it will be confusing. Some other readers might label it like dark read, which according to me is not. It was very interesting and i loved it

This is about Jandy a Female Silk Demon/Terran and Chollar a Male Master Elder Cerebral. I really loved the details about the silk demon palace and how she used her abilities. Standalone that is part of a series with HEA. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I thought that this was a very interesting read. Be aware though that there is a lot of darkness in it. So if torture and sexual slavery are triggers for you or are simply too intense for you, this book may not be the right fit for you. This read offers complex characters and a detailed world that is easy to get pulled into. This is my truthful review that I am posting of my own choosing.

Layla Stone once again writes an awesome book, no surprise there. In this book, we find out what happened to Chollar and Finbar. The relationship between Jandy and Chollar was very riveting. This book ties up a lot of loose ends and is one of her very best.

Jandy and Chollar 's story has one very sick villain in Fynbar. There is suspense, drama, danger, torture, murder, a Master telepath, twists, turns, Demons of all kinds, and romance. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I truly enjoyed Layla's new unexpected book. Such a good read.
If you're a romance reader, give this a go. It's modern and progressive.
For serious readers, you may benefit from reading all in this series.
Good job, Layla.

I continued this series just for Chollar's story because it sounded like it would be intriguing but at some point it veered towards torture porn and I had to bail. Too dark for me; and with that I think I'm finally done with this series.

I have enjoyed this series as far as story and character development, but it has gotten significantly more gory with each book, and it is a bit much for me.
