The Steel Dragon 2

Rate this book

Kristen Hall grew up a human – but she’s not. She’s a dragon.

And dragonkind will never be the same.

She’s achieved some mastery over her powers and even defeated an enemy dragon.

But nothing she has done has prepared her for what’s coming next. Kristen has been invited to join Dragon SWAT – a force of dragons which serves to keep order among their species. But not every dragon is happy with the status quo; some see humanity as a threat which should be eliminated. They’re not alone. A growing number of humans feel the same about the dragons.

Forces are moving in the world to bring both races into a final conflict. The prize? Survival of their species and control of the Earth.

Powerful humans and dragons are playing chess with the future of the world. But Kristen was a piece none of these beings anticipated. She could swing the balance of power in either direction.

The Steel Dragon has plans of her own, though. Armed with the sense of honor instilled in her by her human parents, she’s going to have to dig to the bottom of the mysteries at play if she hopes to have even the smallest chance of averting a catastrophic war!

I felt so frustrated for Kristen when reading this book but there’s so much action, and exciting scenarios in the story it made up for the frustration.

It’s so hard even to see how or if Kristen can do anything to save both humans and dragons alike. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Great sequel

I loved this. So much action, suspense and betrayal. The Steel Dragon is such a great MC, loved Drew and the other SWAT guys, and gal, but those Dragon SWT characters were for the most part so frustrating- and Stonequest is an a$$hat of the first order. I really hope he falls flat on his face in the next book. He knows more than he’s admitting too, and although he was a stickler in the beginning, he can’t loosen his grip on his dragon code and I just want to smack him.

Definitely need to read book 3 to find out who the Masked One is, and how this all unfolds.

I thought the first book was great... But wow!

I gave book 1 of this series five stars. Considering the ante was definitely upped, I wish I could give this one 6 stars! Loved it and am immediately reading book 3!

DNF, the moral complexity of the story is beyond either protagonist or the author

Firstly, I wanted to love this series, the action is incredible, the setting is interesting, and the characters have so much potential. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t do any of these positives the justice they deserve.

Let’s begin with the most glaring problem, the protagonist is a cop. Unfortunately, either the author is not a cop, or doesn’t think writing a realistic cop is novel enough for a good story. Kristen nerve seems to develop any sense of professionalism, she seems impulsive, prone to making snap judgments without considering if she has all the facts. She often morally in the right but this is constantly undermined by her inability to defend her positions with any sort of competence due to this immaturity. Worse, when she does finally concede to authority, it’s often for the most shockingly wrong reasons.

This is where I get to the point where I think either the author or Kristen is a little out of their depth when tackling the moral dilemma’s presented in this story. This is a world ruled by dragons who don’t value human life, to the point where scuffles between dragons that result in human deaths is just payable with a fine. A dragon can murder someone or annihilate a whole community and it basically amounts to destruction of property. Kristen is understandably incensed by this, but then the author does the shocking move of taking up the flag of dragon apologetics. Her human teammates explain to her that “that’s just the system” and that “we can’t get them all” “at least the people who died get payouts”, excuse me? This hamfisted attempt at writing the dragon’s perspective is about as gracefully done as hearing a black person deliver a sermon about how slaves in America need to accept that white people just can’t relate to the struggles of black people, and while it’s shit that blacks people aren’t considered people, at least the rich plantation owners are forced to pay a fine if they kill black slaves of another plantation owner, after all, it could be worse.

And this brings me to the other problem…am I supposed to view the human anti-dragon group as too extreme? Because the author has failed to convince me why I should be against them when my other options are a system of government that treats mass murder as a crime comparable to vandalism. It’s so strange that Kristen can tolerate that injustice, but will fight the anti-dragon group because “justice can’t be achieved by committing dragon murder”, again, excuse me? This point of view is delivered with such conviction by the character that I can’t help but think this is supposed to be convincing. Again, this is about as graceful as an abolitionist persecuting a former slave for killing his master because using violence to escape a life of bondage is just a step too far.

None of this would be as much a problem of course if the author did a good enough job of showing that the reformist attitude to change was going to be effective, but he repeatedly shows the opposite to be the case. It becomes increasingly obvious that the dragons will not listen to reason and yet are expected to side with the status quo, and view the anti-dragon groups as terrorists instead of freedom fighters forced to take extreme measures due to the frankly INSANE power disparity between the oppressors and the oppressed.

I’m fine with protagonists being naive, so long as they begin to develop more mature perspectives as the story forces them to confront their views. I don’t have a problem necessarily that the protagonist and characters in the book operate on a moral creed different from my own, but when the stakes are as high as “mass murder in dragon society is punished with a fine”, I really expect the book to put the leg work in for me to accept that the heroes of the story are the people protecting the mass murdering dragons because “two wrong don’t make a right”. Again, are you serious????

I liked this book, though the constant harping on the main character being human, no, dragon, no human, no dragon, got a bit irritating after a while. I understand why the dragon swat lead didn't want the main character's views widely known, I get that, but ignoring her entirely despite the proof to the contrary just didn't make any sense. This was a lot like a cop show where the cops run around, dusting for prints, collecting dna samples, then never sending those prints to the lab, lock the dna into a drawer, and never process it, then complain they aren't making any progress on the case. To be frank, it struck me as just plain stupid, and the entire series is supposed to be focused on how nonstupid the dragons are. This book did not convince me of that. If anything, it convinced me they're so short sighted, they can't see the evidence if someone hit them upside the head with it. There's a point where stubborn turns into stupid, and we all know you can't fix stupid. I'll read the next book in the series, just because I like most of the characters, and the story, while not fantastic, is interesting enough to hold my attention, but honestly, if the stupid continues, I'm going to have to drop the series, because it's going to frustrate me too much. Even our main character spent most of her last fight flailing uselessly instead of using the one tool that could have solved her problem in 2 seconds. I realize it's there for dramatic effect, but seriously, if it takes a supposedly intelligent human, no dragon, that long to figure out how to end the encounter, I have to question her intelligence.
Anyway, despite my issues with the storytelling, it wasn't a bad book, just an extremely frustrating one, and the next book will determine whether or not I'll continue past that point with the series. I have better things to do with my time than read books that take three times as long as necessary to get to the point without enhancing the story while doing so.

A roller coaster ride,

Kristen is a dragon who was raised as a human. She lives in a world that has the same history as us but her world has dragons in it. The dragons have been around for 10,000 years but, somehow, life on earth proceeded as it has here. The dragons look down on humans with disdain for they are bigger, stronger, able to shift from dragon to humanoid, have varying magical powers and live for thousands of years. They don’t consider humans to be their equal and cannot see that strength doesn’t always win.
Some humans are mages; i.e. they have magic. They have served dragons from the beginning but their have been two wars that they started in order to gain their freedom. Each time they were defeated but that only drove them underground. Now they have both magic and technology with which to fight the dragons. Kristen was first a young girl who wanted to be a cop like her dad. She had no idea that she was adopted. She ended up in SWAT on completing her Police Academy course and was resented; but she worked hard to learn and become one of the team and it was because she put their lives ahead f hers that her dragon powers came to light. She found that her skin could turn to steel and so she became the Steel Dragon. So she ended up being transferred to Dragon SWAT but seemed to get everything wrong. But inside she still considered herself human but with a mission to build a bridge between the two races.
The story is complex and full of angst but also full of action. At times the narrative flows but at others it stumbles and there is too much repetition. Regardless, it’s a good book for the YA market and good enough to bring you back for more.

I really wasn't impressed with this installment. Basically we have pretty much a repeat of the same situation of the first book, with her new Dragon-SWAT status. They (the dragons) belittle her at every given moment, have arrogance that is off the charts and makes so many of them really unlikeable.

With an angry mother hunting "Red" down like a rabid dog, she is betrayed by the dragons to the point where it made me genuinely very angry at just how things were written. We find some hidden truths out throughout the book, but I found the story really hard to enjoy, as there were so much crap thrown at her, that the book didn't seem to flow as well as the first book.

At the end, the story ended on a small cliff hanger and the final fight of the book was paced really poorly. I hope book 3 improves drastically, as the general concept of the series is actually pretty damn good.

The Steel Dragon...

...is really hard to like; as a person, as a female, as a cop. I almost put the book down at the 30% mark or so. She is a real brat, obnoxious a.f., rude, gives out classified information even after being to not to by her boss, the list goes on. And she knows better! Her dad is a cop, and she should know about secrets, discretion, chain-of-command, all the basic police stuff.
Anyway, she puts herself in more trouble than she would otherwise get into. I wonder if it's to spice up the story or ? I come up blank. Kristen's human and dragon friends and allies are mostly 2 dimensional, but some stand out as real people. I especially like the "Rookie" and Hernandez, the explosives expert.
No typos, dramatic, rather violent, but overall pretty good. I will finish the series, then we shall see.

Taut writing, great concept

Many Kindle Unlimited books are amateurish. The Steel Dragon series, at least so far, is thoroughly professional. The writing is crisp, moves the plot forward, presents consistent and growing characters, and holds reader interest from start to finish. I have lots of questions about the world, and some faith that the authors will get to them. I like, too, the way the presence of dragons is just THERE, an almost colloquial presentation, very like the Heinlein YA books (see Between Planets for Venusian dragons), although dragons in this universe are magical. Highly recommended.

So much better than book one

So as with book one the story started annoying slow. The main character Kristen was a bit to sassy for her own good. The series of events from encounters with the mysterious but deadly Mages, to the very evil Black dragon Obscura out for revenge, to being jailed - all served chill her out and allow for both SWAT teams to work with her, as well her own discovery of a master plot that could possibly reveal more about her backstory that has to be read for the spoilers. Overall knowing more Dragon SWAT dragon rules and culture as well as the ancients made for a could not put down last 2/3rds of the book and very worth the read. On to book three.

Lots of preaching

First , kick ass heroine. Love the plot line! Second, hate all of the soap boxing. Oh, boo boo, humans are second class citizens. Oh, boo boo, inequality. Oh boo boo, mages and dragons and humans are all segregated. Third, it takes forever, as in never, for our heroine to get the picture that she needs to grow up and follow orders. She thinks she knows best and she's rude and petulant like a frickin two year old who wants to go play in the rain at ten pm. Not impressed. Skimmed second book, which I regret purchasing, just to get to the end. Really bummed. Wanted to live. Nope.

Very long book but well worth it.

I like the series, I like it a lot. If you’re into dragons, cops, action great character development and plenty of Snark you’ll enjoy this book. This book has a little bit of everything, excellent character development and plenty of plot twists and mysteries. It is long though and maybe should be read in chunks if you cannot devote the time to read it all in one sitting. It is well worth the time though and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Growing more powerful...

Kristen is now with dragon SWAT and making waves as only she can do! The action comes quickly, and we are taken for a peek at a whole new world of political subterfuge. We are also given some insight into the Steel Dragon’s origins.

One of the themes I truly appreciate is that of teamwork being stronger than an individual standing alone. Kristen wins not because she is the Steel Dragon, but because she allows (albeit reluctantly) her human and dragon friends to work with her.

Totally off the chain. Steel Dragon is BA in bad ass Dragon form!

You know I avoided these books because I was into another writers Dragon and Tiny Ninjas other books. I bought all three books this month and have been totally blow an away! I'm not sure if this is Kevin's first books with M.A. but home run guys. If you liked Mike's other books these will knock your socks odd. Great read for being stuck inside while the C19 screws up our lives. Thanks for the read. I'm to book three. Might not get any sleep tonight😎

Wholehearted 5 for The Steel Dragon

Thank you thank you to the authors for writing an excellent book with great characters and at a length that you can really sink you teeth into without having to read it in 2-3 instalments of 150-200 pages!

The reader follows Kirsten and her human and dragon teams as she continues to fight corrupt humans and dragons.

Great storyline and I can hardly wait for the 3rd in the series!

Action And Peril, Action And Peril

Kristen receives grief from both humans and dragons as they disrespect a Dragon raised as a human. Fortunately, her human SWAT team thinks the world of her and some of the dragons are coming along. She is tough and comes out on top in battles no one thought she could win. Will she be able to stop a war of mutual extinction? I look forward to the next book.

I really wanted to like this series but I could not finish this book. The Dragon SWAT leadership ignoring all evidence over and over and over and over again was just too much. Kristen should be dead from head trauma from banging her head against the wall during every chapter. I turned off my Kindle when they failed to understand how DNA works and decide she's guilty and arrest her even when it's not an exact match. No.. just no.

Long but lively

Like the first, this book seems over-long to me. However, i enjoy the story and the characters, though I wish they all had more dimension. Perhaps if the author altered perspectives more this wouldn't feel quite so cumbersome. As it is, most of the PoV is the heroine's with the dastardly villain getting a few thoughts here and there. I'm not feeling at all optimistic that anything will change, but I enjoy these enough to keep reading.

Kevin and Michael have, once again, put out an entertaining and compelling read. I had so much experiencing Kristen's journey with her as she figures out what it actually MEANS to be the Steel Dragon. How will she hold onto her humanity as she learns more about being a dragon, and the history and traditions of her kind?

Good book

I am enjoying this series. The characters are believable and not too far over the top. The power of wealth and greed is as real in their world as it is in ours. The corruption and repercussions are scary and all too believable. The dragons hral much faster than I find realistic, but suspend disbelief and just enjpy!

Good read!

Yes it was worth purchase. If you enjoyed first book you will like this one as well. This just builds on the story. Writing style, storyline and characters are continued. From the authors note at the end this will not be a trilogy more of a series, 2 - 3 more books is what was written. So hold on there will be more this length in this year and next year.

Another successful endeavour by the two talented authors.
Particularly enjoying the team bonding and the moral dilemmas between human and dragon, would this be what it was like if we had this in our world , I think so and so this works very well for me as i head into book 3 slightly sad book 2 has ended but happy i have a book 3 to help.

A great book to get.

This book was as good as the first one was , I was surprised as I read the book. The author keeps you on edge and wondering what was next, you did a great job with the book. At times I thought I new how it would end, guess what I was all wrong and I look forward to next book. Great job

I just finished Book 4 and have pre-ordered Nr 5. Great series. The fact that Kristen is part of both worlds really brings the problems she faces to life. The author does a great job of weaving the threads of both worlds together and I really like his results! This review can be used for ALL 4 books. Please keep this concept going!

Steel Dragon

This KU library selection is the continuation of the Steel Dragon series, a collaboration of two prolific authors. For me, this book had a different impact than book one. I struggled with getting through this one, which was less cohesive and more repetitive, angsty young adult, finally quitting altogether about halfway through.

Dragons , human and zealots

In dread of hide and seek. Kids play Dragon hunt and hide, that's dark.
Alternate urban fiction at is best. Enjoyable and immersive.
Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I loved the scene when Jim came back outside and asks. What happened to the garden, I was only inside for five minutes.
I look forward to the next one 😀

Kristen Hall is Steel Dragon! A Dragon with human parents!

Another fantastic series! Kevin does a fantastic job bringing Dragons and magic into modern day! There has never been a steel Dragon and never would without human technology and biological engineering. Torn between two worlds what will Kristen Hall do next?!?!

The Steel Dragon 2

Kristen Hall aka the Steel Dragon is back. Dragon SEAT is not what she thought it should be leaving her frustrated. Add in someone targeting her friends and someone killing dragons, Kristen has her hands/class full.
