Rate this book
Lady Lydia Brownlow's parents have given her an ultimatum. She must settle upon a husband or face a future life of drudgery as a companion. Dreading either fate, Lydia attends a Christmas country house party to settle upon a match. But much to her dismay, her brother's rakish best friend is also in attendance. The Duke of Warwick is the one man she doesn't dare trust, and the only one she can't resist.

Alistair, the Duke of Warwick, has two problems. The debt his father left behind is about to swallow him whole, and the woman he wants to marry has been avoiding him. In an effort to prove his sincerity and win her hand, he inveigles an invitation to the same house party where she will choose a husband.

However, Lady Lydia isn't about to succumb to his practiced seductions, and she leads him on a merry chase. When he wins her hand at last, deception tears them apart. Can Alistair prove his love and claim his duchess's heart for good?

Sweet story

I like this but it was very short. Still very good. It has a reformed rake who falls in love with a child playmate. He called her Freckles and I didn't like that. It bugged me but He really did love her. She comes with a dowry and be his in desperate need of it. But he doesn't tell her. But that isn't the only reason he married her. He truly loved her but her brother ends up telling her and she has major doubts. So she runs home. I really did like this even though the story line is one she uses a lot. I just like her besotted heroes. As long as they don't cheat of course. This one is safe. And very sweet.

The Plot
Alistair and Lydia have known each other most of their lives. She is his best friend's (Rand from Willful in Winter) sister. He has managed to inherit a destitute dukedom and needs a bride with a fat dowry. A few months before the book starts (In the Winter house party - the locale for all Wicked Winter books) Alistair sees Lydia in a whole new light at a ball and decides to pursue/court her for marriage and follows her to the house party. She has an ultimatum from her family to get married and quickly or it's exile to life as a companion to some lady somewhere. Fortune hunting Duke trying to persuade the Lady that he is in the earnest about marrying her, she refuses to believe (because who could want a bluestocking like her), him trying even harder to convince her using charm & seduction both, he falls in love, she agrees, they marry, she finds out he needed money, big misunderstanding, he grovels, she agrees, HEA.

My Thoughts
- The plot is straightforward but, been there, read that.
- The prose was entertaining I guess, so were the sensual expressions.
- The characters were written well.

What did not work
- The trope is so common it felt tired. Don't get me wrong, Scarlett Scott is very talented because I did feel the annoyance with the characters right?
- The book just felt out of place with the wickedness of the Winters, a bland in-between, a little meh. But there is always a risk when introducing a mini-novella which is kind of a spin-off from the original characters.
- The characters needed a bit more development & the heroine needed a spine.

The Hero
Alistair was likeable enough. He was handsome, a willingly reformed rake (sure because he could no longer afford debauchery, but he did reform himself!) his pursual of Lydia was adorable and not fake because his motivation behind the courtship was not just money, which was why he was half honest, at least about his feelings. He was acceptant of her nature as was encouraging. A charmer never hurt anybody especially when there is a ducal coronet in play. He probably seemed palatable because Lydia was...

The Heroine
Lydia was annoying. I generally like confident, intelligent bluestockings but this one was contrary. She is so willing to think little of herself, doesn't add up when she refuses suitors after suitors, stands up to her mother about her astronomical interests but is still disbelieving of Alistair when he wants to be with her? She throws a tantrum when Rand tells her about the dowry need but has never observed the state of the house or his circumstances, which she notices later? And comes back after one heartfelt speech from Alistair she overhears, I was like come on girl, have some faith in yourself!

My Recommendation
The book would have been better if it was more about marital navigation & less about courtship, the learning curve would have fit. A decent placeholder in the series that can be skipped if you cannot wait to read more about the Winters.

Wishes in Winter is part of Scarlett Scott’s Wicked Winters series, but it works perfectly fine as a standalone story. I have yet to read any of the books in the series, although I am interested in it, but that did not stop me from enjoying this one.

As always, Scarlett Scott hooked me from the start with this one. I quickly fell for the characters and could not get enough of their story. This is a novella, but there is enough packed into it to make it feel like a full-length book. It’s filled with feelings, ensuring you’ll want more of the world.

Without a doubt, another great read from the author.

Alistair & Lydia (Warwick & Freckles). I cannot believe I'm actually giving a Scarlett Scott book only 1 star but this book was just terrible. I totally didn't believe any of it. They had known each other since childhood, he even nicknamed her Freckles. They were like brother/sister. He finds out his dad, before dying, had racked up an enormous amount of debt. He attends the Christmas house party the Winters were putting on to introduce Dev's sisters to society (along with their huge dowries) with a plan to find himself a wife with a large dowry. He sees her and then all of the sudden he realizes that he doesn't want anyone else for a wife than Freckles. Its not like they hadn't seen each other in years for there to be a miraculous change in each of them. He decides to court her so she'll become his duchess. She's not a moron and has her doubts as to his intentions but then puts them aside when he kisses her. She finally believes that he truly wants to marry her and despite her insecurities (too tall, a little too much chub, bluestocking, and on the verge of being a spinster) she believes that he truly loves her. I just can't with these 2. They marry and honeymoon in his townhouse instead of taking a real honeymoon. Their first night entertaining (they weren't available for guests during the faux honeymoon) her family came over and her brother calls him out because he found out that the Duke was heavily in debt and believes he married his sister just for her dowry (which he did!). Bro tells sis and she gets pissed and leaves him for all of 8 days before returning home and back to believing that he truly loved her. The end (thank goodness). The complete lack of self confidence she displayed throughout the entire book, we didn't even get that redemption confidence, was annoying. Nowhere in reality would 2 people with a bro/sis relationship (he called her Freckles even after declaring his love for her) would completely transition into a passion/desire filled romance novel. Let's be real, he needed $$$ and she'll do. Its a novella and took me over a week to actually get through it because I couldn't stop rolling my eyes. The best part of the book was "The End". Sorry Scarlett but this just isn't good and nothing like any of your other work.

Starring Lady Lydia Brownlow and Alistair, Duke of Warwick. Older brother’s best friend and fortune hunter tropes.

Alistair needs funds to settle debts that he inherited from his father. Lydia is the easiest solution since she is an heiress who he is already physically drawn to. So he sets out to win her hand... one kiss at a time. Oh, my my!! Be prepared coz Alistair is totally swoon worthy. Gotta love a hero with swagger!!

Lydia is on her way to being a spinster. She believes that she is too tall and too out spoken to land a husband. So she’s just a little suspicious when Alistair turns his charms on her. Even though she’s always found him irresistible, she knows he’s a rake of the first water. Lydia is a very feisty heroine and doesn’t make things easy for Alistair. She will totally make him run for his money... well, literally. Ha!! Loved her spirit tho!!

So much feels for Alistair and Lydia. I love these two and their journey to HEA!! I loooooove that Alistair calls Lydia “Freckles”. You know that’s going to be a running “in joke” until they are they are both blessedly old and gray. It’s those little things that makes this reader giddy over a storybook couple.

By the way, this is my favorite line in the book...

“My life without her is like a night sky stripped of its stars.” ~Alastair

Gaaaah, I know right?! Forget it... even before that line I was already ugly crying AF. Another beautiful story from Scarlett Scott. It’s no wonder that I will read anything and everything she writes. She continues to create fabulous characters that I love meeting and am happy to cheer for. Scarlett Scott is an absolutely brilliant author... and that is why she is firmly on my Keeper Shelf.

My star rating: 5 stars x 100
Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be re-reading this story over and over and over again!!

Whiny female lead

I enjoy the Winter Sisters series, and realize this wasn’t meant to represent a full length novel, but the main character was just too whiny. For example, in one scene she pitches a fit, throwing stuff when she doesn’t get her way. Basically the entire novella is her saying there is no way he can love her...he says he does...over and over.

We are transported back to the Winter's house party again, and what a lovely visit. This can be read as a standalone, but is part of a wonderful series that is highly recommended. Alistair, the Duke of Warwick, has known Lady Lydia Brownlow almost all her life, being a friend of her older brother. He has come to realize he no longer thinks of her as a younger sister, but as a woman he would like to spend his life with. Lydia has trouble believing this, however, and the troubles go on. Lovely characters, wonderful heartfelt story and satisfactory ending makes for a very enjoyable read.

Notes: the writing started to annoy me a little, Lydia was so weird and annoying that I wanted to slap her through half of the book. I'm not sure if I will continue to read this series.

I'm trying to read the entire Winter series of Scarlett Scott's and apparently, they're multiplying like rabbits, because I just got to this one thinking I'd gotten through them all. Ha! Not so she whispered gleefully. There's more!

In this case, Alistair and Lydia are absolutely perfect for each other. Perfect. Except that Alistair spends an awful lot of his time telling her and she's not listening. Of course she isn't. She's tall and isn't the slender blonde maid her little sister is, so she's spent her entire life being told by that termagant of a mother that she needs to be married so her younger sister can debut. That she shouldn't be reading books. That she needs to not speak, lest some poor man thinks that she's smarter than he is.

So now here she is, pretty much beaten down by Mother, and in walks a man she's known all of her life. Love blooms. And yes, there were spots where I could have slapped Lydia upside the head with the telescope or tripped her so she would hit her head and knock some sense in her. But really, when it comes down to it, how many of us know a "Lydia" in our lives. I thought, with her background, that she was written quite accurately and was made into an interesting character. In other words, I loved this despite the fact that I wanted to throw the heroine out the window at numerous times during the book. :-)

I would give this 4-1/2 stars, rounded to five because I just enjoyed the book overall.

Unfortunately it was just too slow. It took me over a week to finish it. I was drawn in at the first scene but after that the book wasn’t really exciting. But it still probably would have been a 3-3.5 star read until that silly third act break up that made no sense. Our heroine who, up until this point, was educated and levelheaded flew off the rails. It made no sense other than to create unnecessary drama that did nothing for the plot.

I’m actually surprised this is rated so high.

“All I can promise is that for the rest of our lives, I will only ever run toward you.”

my god what an insufferable heroine. there is nothing i detest more than female protagonists who go on and on about how plain and boring they are, while at the same time claiming they are 'too intelligent' to be wanted by a handsome man. there were also some glaring contradictions, she is described as plump then gangly a few pages later? which one is it? i have no idea. all that i know is that for seven chapters she rebuffed every compliment, every positive thing said about her, always rejecting the idea she could possess even one (1) redeeming quality. seven whole chapters. it was excruciating. i only liked chapters eight and nine, but it was too little too late. very underwhelming

WINTER WISHES/WISHES IN WINTER BY SCARLETT SCOTT - Alistair, Duke of Warwick is the "catch" for any lady of the ton but at 27 he had grown tired of the feminine pursuits. He is drowning is his late father's wastrel debts & more importantly, the lady he wishes to marry has been successful in avoiding him. Alistair has gained an invitation to Mr. Devereaux Winter & Lady Emilia Winter’s Christmas country house party & the lady will be in attendance. He also is privy to the fact that her parents had given her an ultimatum, either she choose a husband by the end of the Christmas party or she would be sent to be a lady's companion. He must find a way to convince Freckles of his sincerity in changing his ways & along with that her large dowry would pay his father's debts & help in rebuilding the dukedom.

Lady Lydia Brownlow's parents have insisted she make a decision on a husband or be faced with being a companion to the Marchioness of & her half dozen ill-mannered Corgis. They will be attending a Christmas house party & there will be several "fortune hunter" men looking for a wife & dowry to set themselves up in life. Lydia was also aware that Warwick will be in attendance, her brother's best friend, a rake & the only male she knows she cannot resist. She has known him all of her life & tagged after the two boys throughout her childhood & she has been enamored with him as long as she can remember. Lydia is fully aware that she must avoid him because resisting him is hopeless & he is just another fortune hunter.

Alistair & Freckles have a wonderful adventure with his pursuit of her & her refusal to believe his sincerity. The bantering, humor, chase, romance, confessions, love & a HEA were so entertaining & an excellent holiday tale to put you in a happy holiday mood!

One of my least favorite types of heroine: one who is obviously quite pretty, if not in conventional ways, who refuses to believe she's anything but an ugly castoff whom no one could ever love, who will not listen to someone explicitly telling her he wants and esteems and cares for her and believes she is beautiful. One who refuses to communicate when there's trouble, because she's an immature little twat, thus extending the conflict unnecessarily because she just cannot believe the hero because she's always thought he lied to her. Because she's not lovable or something. And there's no reasoning for it except her own lack of self-worth, which can be an interesting plot when handled well but in this case very much was not. So it was just aggravating and needlessly long (for a not-very-long story) so she can have her hissy fits.

Summary (paraphrased):
"You lied to me! You never loved me!"
"I do love you, with everything in me! Let me explain."
"I will not listen to your lies! I will not listen to a thing you say, for that would end the conflict and the author needs this agony to go another couple chapters!!"
*two chapters later*
"I should have listened to you. I see now you were telling the truth even though nothing really has changed since the last discussion except that I decided to listen instead of pushing you away. And I am much more mature now for having suffered or something. Everyone feel good about my character arc. I've grown! Somehow. Even though I did nothing to deserve it except sulk and then eavesdrop. I have decided to believe you love me, because reasons. Neither of us did anything different from our first fight except the author decided it was time for us to make up."

No, thank you.

Another excellent book in the Wicked Winters series. The passion, romance, chemistry, drama and even humor were all well interwoven into the story. The Heroine was quite likeable, as was the Hero. He was funny, kind, gentle, determined...albeit a bit dumb. He could, and should, have been completely honest with the Heroine from the beginning but, since it's a novel, of course he withheld vital information that was devastating.
The Heroine's brother was a bit of a jerk though. I wanted to slug him in the eye. I'm sure he does better in his own book, but how he treated his sister and new brother-in-law in this one almost, not quite but almost, caused me to not want to read his story.
With all that said, this is, so far, my second favorite book of the series, and it garners my "Keeper for the Shelves" worthy award.

Lydia and Alastair have known each other since they were children and Lydia has loved him for just as long. So when he starts to show interest in her as someone other than his best friend's little sister. She can hardly believe it. She thinks he is just teasing her.

Alastair has just recently opened his eyes to the woman that Lydia has become. He has determined that she is the only one for him. But he also needs her dowry to save his estate.

Lydia is determined not to marry someone that just wants her money. She wants to be wanted for herself. What will happen when she learns that Alastair needed her money...?

I really liked Lydia and Alastair's story. I loved watching these two interact and banter back and forth. This is my first story by Scott, but I'll definitely be back for more!

Wishes in Winter is a steamy romantic regency novella. I enjoyed the story between Lydia and Alistair, the Duke of Warwick. It had just enough heat, passion and romance for a novella.

Lydia has always yearned for her brother's best friend, she doesn't trust him but she can't resist him. He's loved her for a long time but also needs her dowry for his now debt ridden estate his father left n his hands so he sets about courting her first, gaining her trust and love.

A very short, very steamy and romantic read.

The most romantic book I have read

The only complaint it was short. It was so different, The Hero was the sweet one, The heroine was a little tougher. I ended up adoring Alistair, My all time favorite Hero, He was the sweetest most romantic of any book. Lydia was a blue stocking, but sweet. Only one brief argument. The story not trying to tame the Hero, he was perfect, but him trying to win her over. A touch of very tasteful lovemaking, making it even more romantic. I can’t recommend any higher, you will love it.

An endearing romance that radiates warmth & touching intimacy!

A tender and heartfelt romance that had me in rivulets of tears of joy and heartache. The characters so clearly dazzled in their depiction as they easily sparked into life off the page and effortlessly touched my heart.
The perfect tale to curl up with on a winter's night that can be consumed in one delightfully engaging sitting!

very romantic

A simple quick romance. This time the brothers best friend is pursuing the little sister who doesn’t think anyone finds her interesting or attractive. Her sense of self worth is low though she values her intelligence she has been taught that is a hindrance to marriage so she doesn’t believe Alistair when he tells her he finds her attractive and values everything about her. There lies the essence of the storyline.

amazing

What an amazing love story. That winter party was such fun to read and imagine myself there for just a tiny bit because I really like modern amenities.

Oh, but this one this one was such a heartbreaking and heartfelt story and I just Really may have to reread it because it just was fantastic and I just finished it. Did I possibly shut a tear or two or six or now have a stuffed up nose? Yes yes I did but oh my goodness . Such a great story. Sorry for any spelling or miss used words, but again I have a stuffed up nose and Siri is not understanding my dictation.

I really could've done without the constant reminders that he was a ho-bag, especially when Lydia was thinking about how his "conquests" were rumored to be in the dozens.

Aside from that, there wasn't even close to enough romance or even chemistry between the MCs before or during the courting. I was not at all convinced that he suddenly had feelings for her.

Good idea for the story, but this could've been executed a lot better. This was disappointing.

Lydia and Warrick

For this to be a short story, I really enjoyed this. Lydia a strong minded girl with no intent on marriage and Warrick who wants to protect her and has been in love with her since their moment in the woods. Even though its a short novel Scarlett has hit all the points. Great job
