“If you stay here by my side, though, that
will change. There’s only the underworld for people like us. But down here,
we don’t burn. We rule.”
― Jessica Hawkins, Violent Triumphs
Bravo! Five Stars! Review to follow.
My review:
So, as I have stated in my other reviews of book one of this series and book two...AMAZING.
I cannot believe I loved this story so much. I cannot believe I am gloomy THAT IT IS OVER!!!
Jessica Hawkins...please hear my cry...we need more!!! Please!
This book is everything I would usually not read. I do not usually read series. I do not often read romance.
But I started book one. Almost DNFED because of the violence in the first chapter. Then I started again. And I was CONSUMED.
I have missed TOW NIGHTS OF SLEEP trying to finish this series and now I have!
This is the incredible and moving story of a Mexican Cartel family. It is also a love story.
It is engaging. That is to mellow a word. It ignites sparks! It is intense. It makes the reader one with the story. You are there.
Some of my all time favorite books seem as different as night and day but they all have one thing in common. And that is ATMOSPHERE. Atmosphere is a must for me. Briefly, I want to talk about three of my favorite books.
Three of my all time faves;
"A tree grows in Brooklyn". That is my favorite book. We are transported to Brooklyn. The story of love, loss and poverty remains, for me, my favorite book ever read.
"I Cleopatra". This story obviously is about the great Queen and takes place in Egypt. IN SOME OF THE BEST historical fiction, I have ever read, we are taken to the castle, the magnificence and beauty of Egypt and we are taken to the world of Cleopatra.
Finally, there is "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" a beautiful story about a young woman from Barbados who comes to New England knowing nothing about the Puritan culture she is about to become involved in. The atmosphere if New England is so strong you can smell the grass in the meadows and fields. It remains a remarkable story and in my top five of all time.
Now this story is violent and bloody and RAUNCHY. Lots of sex, people and lots of corny lines. I will admit...A bit to corny for me and I consider myself someone who has no problem with smut in books, if used for the right purposes but man! This was a bit much.
But I loved it for the same reasons I loved the above mentioned three books.
We are THERE. In Mexico. We are listening to Mariachi music and we are in the villas and the nightclub and we are with Natalia and Cristiano through their long and violent journey.
I ADORED this book. I could not and cannot stop thinking about it.
ENDING SPOILERS:
I wish that they had told Costa the truth. I do not like to think of him thinking his daughter is dead. He had suffered so much loss already. To much.
Not enough to take a star off though. The star is really for all three books. I gave the first two fours but the conclusion was just...I cannot believe I loved this series so much. Best of the year so far. READ IT PEOPLE!
PS: For anyone who HAS read it and knows of a book or books that resemble this one please post them below!
