Awesomely dark retelling of Moana!

I never read Moana or saw the movie, but I did check out some YouTube videos on the differences between the Disney version of Moana and the real Polynesian story. A lot of that centered around the demigod Maui. In this story there are twins Cash and Colt. Colt is known around town by the nickname demigod since he was in high school.

The story begins with a twelve year old Mona who lives on an island which is run by her father who is pretty much a cult leader to the people on the island. He is strict with the laws he creates and a lot of the laws are intended to keep the islanders afraid of the outside world. They are on an island but can’t go in the ocean, so can’t learn to swim.

Though they get supplies from the mainland, only a few of the islanders are allowed to leave and only to get the supplies. Anyone else caught trying to leave gets punishment of one year in Mona’s fathers dungeon and after that has to be cleansed since they are not pure (you don’t want to know what is involved in that, believe me). It has always been women that try to leave because the men pretty much have it made. They can have more than one wife and treat their women how they want. Mona’s father is shown to be abusive to his wife and daughters.

Mona’s sister Clara left the island after talking to Mona and giving her a heart necklace with a C on it to have her close to Mona’s heart. Clara wore a similar one with an M. However, Clara is found dead with her heart missing a month later on Mona’s birthday and Mona finds out on that day when mainland police come to inform the family. When Mona turns eighteen, she can no longer stand the rules and laws and escapes to the mainland.

Mona meets Colt and Cash who have ties to her sister and hate the people on the island. She wants them to help her find out what really happened to her sister and where Clara’s heart is. While staying with Colt and Cash she develops feelings for Colt and he for her. As Mona gets more confidence from being away from her father’s island she also decides that she wants to free the people there. I won’t go into more about the story because it is very good and you should experience it for yourself. This is a steamy dark romance and like the blurb says there is blood, so it is not for the faint of heart. Though I did really like it!

2ir3yw5 HEART THIEF Is a short sinister Fairy Tale by Ker Dukey

Here we meet two sisters, Mona and Clara, who live on a secluded island surrounded by water and run by their father who keeps them under his thumb instilling fear into the congregation making it so they never attempt to leave.

My father wants us to fear the water, so that we never leave this place. Even paddling is forbidden here. There are tales of a monster living in the oceans depths to stop us from wanting to cross it.

But Mona's always wanted to discover what the outside world holds. Her mind has been opened by a few contraband books from the outside world further instilling a curious mind.

Just before Mona's thirteenth birthday her sister gifts her a silver heart on a chain from a box with the words Shiny Jewels by Ward Brothers each necklace holds the sisters initials.

One for you and one for me.
So no matter where I am,
you know you own my heart and
I love you.

That was the last time she ever saw her sister. A month goes by and she learns that her sister was murdered.

Clara's story infected this place. Fear crept in and planted itself in the hearts of the youth, much to the joy of my father. Don't stray from the path of your leader because monsters lurk beyond our island, beyond his protection, and steal your heart.

Five years go by, and now that she's all grown up that just increases her need further to leave the island and find out the truth about her sister. Her first port of call will be to the two brothers.

This was only a short read so it was inhaled in no time at all. Going into this and knowing what this author can deliver I knew some twists and turns would be thrown my way and in no way did she disappoint, and that there is what I love about this author, expect the unexpected and she will deliver. The only thing with this is that I wished it was longer, I needed and wanted more. After reading about the goings on which went down on the island I craved more of that twisty dark f#cked up sh#t. Because that definitely got my dark juices flowing, and I just wished she'd stayed in that theme for a wee bit longer.

Sinister version of Moana.

I heard of the Disney character Moana but never watched it. I've read reviews before starting this book because I was so curious/hyper to know what fairytale re-telling I'll be reading, then I went for a little google search.
Although this story has a lot of difference than the original story but the readjustment of Moana left an interesting plot which was engrossing.

Being the daughter of a cult, a hypocritical father whose influence over the whole island was strong, Mona and her older sister Clara grew up captive on the island. But Clara has been off the island many times, sneaking away and coming back with sweet tales of beyond the island and telling them to Mona. Until Clara was murdered and Mona heartbroken is determined to find the murderer which leads her to the Ward brothers. The Ward brothers, Colt and Cash, already met Clara and have connection with the island. I found these two characters vague. The brothers have different personalities. Together the three form a bond and find out Clara's murderer.

Heart Thief is a not a fancy romance of the lover getting the heart stolen (metaphorically) by the partner but instead the heart is taken literally. The story has dark elements and reading on those fanatical idiots may make you want to tear the page. My patience was tested. The twists in the story was superbly shocking. I'm not sure whether this book has ménage pairing. The three of them show feelings for each other and are okay with it but it's Mona and Colt most of the time so I'm unsure.

Genre: Dark Romance
Type: Standalone novel from Sinister Fairy Tales collection
POV: First Person – Multiple
Rating:
(4.25 stars)

All her life Mona Walters only ever known the island she was born and bred on. When an unexpected gift reminded her how much she lost, she took matters into her own hands and left to find answers. But the world out there was much more than she could ever imagine especially when she fell into the hands of the Ward brothers.

Mona was a curious island girl. She had a rebellious streak in her that was both advantageous and dangerous for her. I liked the brothers' different personalities and motivations. However one of them needed more development to make the story more effective.

I want to tear from my skin and dissipate on the breeze. I can't live like this, with these traditions. It's sickness wrapped in belief.

This book was an enjoyable little dark treat of the author’s reinterpretation of Moana. I have always enjoyed the subject matter featured and I liked the story direction. I also liked how some things could repulse me, yet turned on lol!

Heart Thief is a story of breaking free and new experiences. It would appeal to readers looking for a short dark read with element of suspense.

I'm not sure I'll ever look at the Disney flick Moana the same way again!

Mona and her older sister, Clara, grew up on an island run by their father. Their congregation is viewed as a cult and the sisters aren't blind to how corrupt and hypocritical their father's preachings and rules are. They know that the world outside of theirs is a world of many wonders and despite how much their people fight against that influence, despite the punishment for even having such thoughts, these sisters can't wait to escape the island and discover the world beyond. They were born for adventure and the island just can't hold them. When Clara disappears and then shows up murdered, it was never more clear that Mona's life would never be the same again.

❥ It's a cult. With a cult mentality. There's even a character (Eli) who wholly believes in 'the word' and tries to inhibit Mona's quest for freedom
❥ Secrets galore. Who murdered Clara? Mona's desperation and determination for answers leads her into the arms of Colt and Cash
❥ I'm still not sure which of the brothers Mona is with... Colt? Cash? Both?

If you're a fan of fairy tale retellings, I'm sure you'll get a kick out of this one!

Heart Thief is a captivating read with some dark sexual elements and violence. It's the first Ker Dukey book I've read and it won't be the last, the writing flowed smoothly and the plot was excellent, with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Mona was a headstrong young girl, barely an adult and terribly naive as a result of her cloistered upbringing. Desperate to fly free from the island before her wings were clipped permanently and servitude was her only future.

We don't meet Cash and Cole until half way through the book, which is already a fairly quick read. This meant that I didn't feel like I ever got to know either of them, and the 'romance' part was far too rushed. I just couldn't connect with them and didn't really buy into their feelings for one another. The focus was very much on the suspense element of what happened to Mona's older sister, but this didn't leave any time for developing and convincing me of their feelings for one another. I think if the book had another 8 chapters or so, where we got to know the men and saw them spending time with Mona, this would have been somewhere between a 4 and 5 star read.

Overall I would still recommend the book. Whilst it may lack the depth that I prefer a story to have, it is still an exciting and well written retelling of Moana.

This was a very loose contemporary retelling of Moana which I have to confess I have actually never seen I know shocker right.
Mona longs to escape her island prison.
The daughter of the leader of a cult her whole life has been about obeying and following her father's strict laws.
Her older sister turned away from the faith and was savagely murdered supposedly by outsiders further forcing the message home that the world beyond there shores is evil and corrupt.
Mona’s eighteenth birthday brings forth another barbaric cleansing ritual and a proposal of marriage from Eli causing her to panic.
Her flight path throws her directly into the crosshairs of Cash and Colt; twin brothers who were heavily involved in Mona’s sisters hidden past and this meeting causes long-buried secrets to finally resurface.
So this was well written and all sorts of intriguing.
The suspenseful side of this was well done but I thought this concentrated on the mystery of Mona’s sister Clara and what happened to her to the detriment of forging a connection between Mona Cash and Colt.
The problem for me here was mostly the length of this.
It was just not long enough to build enough momentum to hook me in.
It was either going to be the suspense or the romance that suffered and for me, it was definitely the connection that took a hit.
I also didn’t feel we really got to know anyone here on any deeper level.
They all seemed to merge together in my head with nothing to individually separate them again I think this was mostly down to the short length of this.
All the bones were here I just never got a real sense of the characters and there separate distinct personalities and voices to set them apart from each other especially the brothers themselves at least not enough to convince me of there affections.
Especially important considering this was a ménage.
I do think in this scenario with multiple love interests it’s vitally important to separate the characters for believability and connection and I felt Cash kinda got left behind slightly as the focus seems to be focused more on Colt and Mona.
Despite the above, this actually was an easy and enjoyable read and I did find the finale hugely satisfying.
It was fast-paced and interesting and the actual writing was great; no surprise there as I have read and enjoyed this author previously.
Finally, this is not a dark romance the boys are absolute sweethearts to Mona but it does have dark themes and violence throughout.
I do recommend this as It kept my attention and was entertaining but it could have been so much better than it was.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of Heart Thief.

Dark and twisted retelling of Moana!
We are introduced to sisters Mona, and Clara. Their father is the cult 'Leader' of the island they are living in and he forbids the sisters from leaving. Of course, the sisters crave freedom, and Clara turns out to be the first to leave the island. Soon, Clara is found dead with her heart missing. Determined to find the killer, Mona escapes the island.

For the next part of the story, we are introduced to the Ward twins - Cash and Colt. They were the last ones to be with Clara before her death. The real story only starts here as more secrets are revealed. The twins are extremely attracted to Mona, and the feeling is definitely mutual yet she couldn't help but feel as if they are keeping deadly secrets from her.

Though its MFM, i couldn't really feel Mona's connection to a certain brother. And so the ending was rather abrupt. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the MFM scenes tho (steamy af🔥) like this one

"I’m being stretched and filled to the max. The jewels caress my inner walls as his hips piston into me, making me throw my head back in enraptured throes of pleasure." well yeah this guy has goddamn jewels "running like a ladder up his dick" (from the book not me)

I realised i was more interested in Mona and the twins than the actual Heart Thief but nevertheless, i enjoyed the surprise at the end. 4 stars! recommended for those who enjoy dark retellings 😆

Dark twisted fairytale....

An extremely dark cult style take on Moana. It was interesting and definitely dark. There are plenty of things that could be considered triggers and the relationship dynamic is MFM. I will say that the relationship while it was interesting... I just didn’t fully buy it because there wasn’t enough build. I realize that this is a quick read though, so with that in mind I can accept it.

Did I still enjoy this read? Yes. Do I recommend it to people with no triggers and who love dark taboo reads, yes!

When I read the blurb of HEART THIEF I had no idea what was the choice of retelling of this author. But right at the beginning we can see it is a dark and twisted retelling of Moana.

Our heroine here calls Mona and she lives in a secluded island where her father is the leader of a cult that believes only the people that lives there is purified. Nobody can leave the place, only the ones chosen to go to get supplies. The people of the island were brainwashed to believe they were serving God. Moana didn't know the outsite world but her heart told her there were more to it. That that life without having a choice wasn't good. And when her sister that ran away appears dead, the desire to get out of that place takes another proportion. Now she wants to know what happened to her sister.

This is a short book but I didn't miss anything. It gets right to the point. It has enough suspense to make you wonder what happened but it's not difficult to figure it out. It shows all of the corrupted world of someone who tries to control by using his beliefs to overpower another person. When Mona gets away of the island, she meets the gorgeous brothers Colt and Cash. And they knew her sister. Although she went there for answers, they look like freedom to her, but they also have secrets.

I read HEART THIEF really fast because I was hooked to it. It has contents that could be triggers to some people so be aware. But I love to read dark and romantic suspense, I love how this genre take us away of our comfortable zone.

This story has 3 point of views so we get to know inside the head of Mona, Colt and Cash. This was a great way to tell this story that kept me glued into the pages. This is the third book of THE SINISTER FAIRLY TALE COLLECTION I read and enjoy. I was truly excited for this one because I love Ker Dukey stories. I recommend it.

E eles conheciam a irmã dela.

Recomendo.

* Recebi um ARC desse livro.

Wow, I haven't read Ker Dukey for a while now but always wanted to go back to her stories. I'm so glad I chose this one. :)

I absolutely enjoyed this retelling of a fairytale with dark and sinister twists. The combination of deprivation, greediness and steamy elements made this story an interesting and captivating read.

However, I had trouble connecting this story to the actual fairytale. And the ending was not really believable enough for me. For this ending to work for me, I need more chemistry between two of the main characters. I don't want to spoil here, so I don't name them. But IMO the story is lacking little things here and there to make the ending work for me.

This raw, dirty and edgy book is a page turner, leaving you begging for more!

Growing up on an island, Mona Walters led a sheltered and oppressive life with her father as the religious leader. Looking up to her older sister, Mona is devastated when she is murdered. Always wanting adventure and to be able to make her own choices, Mona is determined to leave the island to get answers and find what’s been missing.

“I think life should be experienced. Sensations explored. I want passion, adventure. I want to live.”

With the narration beginning in Mona’s perspective, getting a sense of her environment and what’s at stake is quickly evident. Once she meets the Ward brothers, the suspense builds as Mona learns more than she could have imagined.

“Our combined groans fill the room. “I think your pussy is my new fucking fetish.”

Overall, I certainly enjoyed this dark fairytale retelling. With a combination of depravity, greed and erotic elements, this was an entertaining and quick read. Mona is a spirited character and her enthusiasm is contagious. As for Colt, he ticked many boxes for me, especially his broody nature. Cash provided a good balance for the trio.

Heart Thief is a suspenseful romance about desire, truth and taking chances. This book would appeal to those seeking a mysterious tale.

This was a fun, quick and dark insta love retelling of Moana that hooked me from the first chapter and finishing it in no time flat.

I really liked Mona. Even though she’s been brought up in a cult, she doesn’t believe in the teachings as much as everyone wants her to. She wants to experience life and all that it has to offer. The Ward brothers are all kinds of protective charming goodness. Things happen quickly between them, which I didn’t necessarily mind, because they had a flow that I liked from their first collision, but I could have done with a little more time to delve into their connection to balance things out.

But what really hooked me was the whole mystery of Mona’s sister’s death. The twists and turns were very well done and I have to admit that I was surprised by the outcome, though I will say that I thought the punishment handed down was awesome!

Stuck under her fathers rules/cult, Mona Walters wants more. She wants to explore the outside world away from their island and find the truth of what happened to her sister. She was taught that evil lurks beyond their home but so does the truth! The Ward brothers might just have the answers she craves. This is a dark retelling of the fairytale, Moana. A clever, dark romantic suspense that I can’t say much without spoiling it but I think you’ll enjoy. The Ward brothers are both mysterious and perfect. This did take a bit to get into but once I did I couldn’t put it down. MF; MFM; Told in Multiple POV

Excellent. I literally just inhaled this and although I have loads to read all I wanna do is reread this. Heart Thief is brilliant.

This is part of the Sinister Fairy Tales Collection and can be read as a standalone. The storyline is loosely based on the fairy tale Moana.

I’m sorry but I’m not rehashing the storyline for you. If you love taboo reads then I highly recommend this story to you. Another brilliant read from this crazy talented author. Can’t wait to read more from her.

THIS IS AN AMAZING STORY! My eyes were bugging out with the twist at the end! Like whatt?!!
Ker Dukey is one of my favorite authors, and if you ever read her I’m sure you know why! Her imagination is insane and dark and full of passion, and emotion. Ahhh, I can’t get enough!

Heart thief is her retelling of Moana and wow was it so original, I wish it was a movie! I really enjoyed how she followed the main theme of the story but really made it her own with the added characters and the side story line. I really really loved this story! I think it’s my favorite one in this collection!

This book didn't really work for me. I have read other books by the author that I really liked so I was expecting a better story and execution. There was no character or relationship development, insta-love/lust, the menage was not well executed, some of the dialogues made me cringe... It is a pity because the story started very promising but it all went wrong for me once the heroine left the island.

“Another addition to the Sinister Fairy Collection and what story Heart Thief was. Probably it’s gonna be a long post because I’ve so man things I want to say about this story. First I know that the Sinister Fairy Collection main point is the retelling of classic fairytales and I’m a lover of retelling but the thing with Heart Thief is that more than being a retelling of Moana to me it was my first time reading something about her story. I was pretty excited about that! Plus it had a dark theme which made it more appealing to read. The movie never seemed interesting to me being al childish but I was really ready for this dark romance and OMG! What did I just read?! Monsters come in many forms, such an accurate phrase for this plot. Mona dreamed for adventure she wanted to explore the world but sadly she was trapped on an island with a sadistic father and annoying, manipulative best friend. The moment her sister was murdered her life wasn’t the same, she was determined to seek the person responsable for ruining her life. When the opportunity came she escaped from that island looking for the Ward Brothers. Once the three of them met, things would never be the same.

Mona’s history really broke my heart. She was trapped on a world of injustice, violence, domination and secrets. Her father was the most awful person ever! Cruel and poisoning their people minds. She desperately needed to run away and I’m so happy she managed to run away and experience what living really is.

Cash and Colt were the sweetest brothers. Don’t change my mind!

Cash was a beautiful soul. Don’t get me wrong he had that player attitude but deep down he was so much more. He cared for Mona and treat her so special. Mysterious and intriguing. Hot, handsome, smart and caring. My heart ached for him when he find out. I gave my word of no spoilers.

Colt, Colt, Colt. I tried not to fall for him but he made it so easy. The way he treated Mona at first was mean and hurtful but knowing the reason why he acted like that I just wanted to hug him so tight. He had that dark, mysterious and somehow untouchable attitude. No matter how much he tried to denied it he had a thing for Mona the moment he laid his eyes on her. One of the things I loved the most about him was his frankness. He said what he wanted no matter if it was cruel or sexual. He had me dropping my jaw. Also he was loyal, protective and caring. So hot!

One thing I didn’t like so much was the slow speed at the beginning. Don’t get me wrong, the moment Mona met Cash and Cold the were no longer slow speed but to reach that point it took a while and to me it was lots of background story that could have been part of the prologue but anyway I fell in love with this book.

THAT ENDING!!!! I thought my heart was gonna to be broken because I was Team Colt and Team Cash, yes I confess. I liked them both with Mona though she belonged to Colt but anyway I prepared myself for the final and OMG YES!!! I couldn’t have asked for a different ending so unexpected yet so perfect. Ker really knows who to make a girl's heart happy.

Don’t waist a minute and join Can, Colt and Mona journey!”

Ker Dukey is a darkened corner in a light filled world. I knew she would have something devilishly entertaining for us. Though I haven't seen or read Moana, I imagine Heart Thief is a unique take on it.

As intriguing as it is, Heart Thief doesn't quite hit the bar I held. I've read a few Ker Dukey novels and always leave them transfixed and clinging to the words. Heart Thief was lacking in the usual depth of character. I also felt as the the reader is on a treadmill. We got on smiled at our neighbors and started it. We upped the incline and started to walk. Once we started to get our bearings the machine mysteriously went to the highest setting, we struggled to turn it down, slow it down, or stop it. We can't stop for fear of injury but there's also no way we can continue without injury. Once we get the resolve to jump off, it stops abruptly- injuring us. But its the abruptness that has us walking like a shaking newborn foal...

Heart Thief just ended. Everything is tied up with a bow. We have our answers. We have our thief but it’s so frantic and quick that it feels half empty. The relationships develop very quick and it's as though it happened when we blinked. I enjoyed the premise. I was ensared by the set up. I just feel like one minute I was clicking up the steep hill of a rollercoaster looking down below, filled with fear/adrenaline/excitement, and in the next instant I'm at the bottom. No swoop, no screams, not even a dip in gravity. I went from the precipice at the highest point to a complete stop at the bottom with my harness unhooked. I almost want to get back on and see if its because I blinked.

The Queen of Darkness has smashed it again 👏🏼❤️ I absolutely loved this twisted take on the Disney film Moana. I was hooked right from the very beginning. Mona is such a feisty character trapped on an island by her cult leader father. On her 18th birthday she escapes and washes ashore on the property of the ward brothers. What follows is journey of self discovery, a lot of mixed emotions, lies, betrayal, sex and a few murders chucked in for good measure lol. I loved it.☺️❤️
As others have mentioned, my only criticism is the shortness of the story. I could’ve literally spent days learning more about Cash & Colt, developing the relationships especially with Cash and learning more about the island, including Mona & her sister Clara’s upbringing. Instead I was finished in roughly two short hours. I just want more 😭

If this is sinning, I'll burn in the depth of hell willingly, accepting God's wrath to feel this good.

As part of the Sinister Collections Ker Dukey brings an amazingly twisted little piece of dark delishiousness!   I devoured every single page. I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this, went in completely blind and was so glad I did. Expect the unexpected, as soon as I realised it was cult related it made my little black heart go crazy, this is one subject that will always pull me in, hook, line and sinker! The twists and turns will keep you turning the pages so quickly, before you know it, boom its finished. I didn't realise it was a loose retelling of Disneys Moana (I'm ashamed to say I haven't watched it) but I'm intreagued so will definitely have to do a cheeky comparison, though I have no reservations that Disney has nothing on the twisted dark mind of Ms Dukey! Thank you once again for keeping my head spinning all night!

Heart Thief is the latest addition to the sinister fairytales collection and is a dark retelling of Moana. The story was original, gritty and different and will have you glued to the pages. Told in varying POV, this story had some nail biting suspense, some intense chemistry, mystery and danger. Although a short read, this tale about breaking free and trying new experiences was imaginative and you will not be able to put it down. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to all lovers of dark romance.

Overall this is a good story and fairly well written. I loved Mona. She was determined to find her own way in the world and not just live the life her society told her she should. I enjoyed the Ward brother's, but would have loved to have learn more about each of them. I absolutely hated Mona's father and Eli.

Ker Dukey has an interesting mind. Her creativity in designing the cult island is mind blowing.
