Another fantastically fun adventure with Winnie and Wilbur with superb illustrations. My daughter adored this story. She loves Winnie's made up words, which make her laugh out loud and how the adventures always go wonky before ending happily. This one has the added bonus of taking us from pole to pole, meeting Penguins and polar bears and ending with a snowball playdate with Santa. Santa is even more magical than Winnie herself!
Winnie the Witch stories are great. She is such a wacky character and there is a real quirky use of language throughout, like when she uses similes like "you are as kind a s a kangaroo that gives free rides in its pocket" or when she uses expressions like "ding-dong-sing-along".
There are also lots of busy, interesting pictures to accompany the text which are just as quirky. The art and design in this book is great. The pictures are in full-colour and look to have been made with the layout of the book in mind, not just images inserted after. For example a conversation between Winnie and a headteacher sees Winnie border the outside of one page and the headteacher the other with the floor across the bottom of the page and the blank space in-between being used for the text. It frames the text nicely and there are plenty of other examples of artful frames. Also some pages have background colour to the text too which is incorporated into the artwork. The art is even allowed to flourish and be marvelled at across some text-free, double-page spreads too. Finally the art and design is completed by the book being hardback with dust-jacket.
The story sees Winnie preparing for Christmas when suddenly, "oh Wilbur, I've just had a thought that's as big as hairy mammoth! What about Santa... Who gives Santa presents?" Pondering on this leads Winnie and Wilbur to commence their Santa Surprise Plan: "Get presents. Wrap presents. Deliver presents to Santa... Come home in time for our stockings on Christmas Day." But not all goes to plan along the way, although the story does come together very nicely at the end (giving you a Christmas-y feeling too).
So typical Winnie quirkiness in a lovely looking book with a good story.
This pocket sized delight packs a festive punch. Short, snappy and sizzling with festive frolics, these two brilliant characters are creating Christmas chaos from the south pole to the north. Kind, generous but haphazard Winnie is desperately worried that Santa won't have any presents at Christmas so she organises a Christmas he won't forget. But transporting packages and a rather unexpected polar bear to the North Pole is no easy task. Travelling from pole to pole, using a combination of magic and mayhem, Winnie ropes in enchanted vegetables, a gingerbread house and Wilbur's brand new PawTech to help her reach Santa on time...but will her Christmas treat go according to plan or is there a better gift she can give to the big man himself? A warm, wintry tale of kindness, fun and friendship.
I've been reading Winnie and Wilbur stories to small children for about twenty years now. I've never met a child yet who didn't love them. Laura Owen's sense of fun and absurdity is perfect for entertaining small children and Korky Paul's irreverent illustrations perfectly match the text. This is one of the newer, chapter books in which children who are not ready to leave behind picture books and not ready to embrace books without pictures are perfectly served and can keep reading about their favourite characters. This is a perfect, Christmas tale, daft, generous, kind and funny. I got an advance copy from the Amazon Vine programme for review.
