A Kinda Fairytale #4

Best Knight Ever

Rate this book
What if a warrior falls in love with his fiercest enemy?

For years, Trystan and Galahad fought on opposite sides of the brutal Looking Glass Campaigns. Trystan is a gryphon, part of a winged race who battled Camelot’s invasion of his homeland. Galahad was a knight of Camelot, who helped his king wage a relentless war, before he saw the dishonor in it and gave up combat forever. The two men have every reason to hate each other.

Now, the Looking Glass Campaigns are finally over. Suddenly, these former opponents on the battlefield need to become allies as they search for a “treasure beyond counting.” Traveling through a fairytale world of scheming enemies, magical temples, and the occasional leprechaun, Trystan and Galahad will have to follow an ancient map towards the lost city of Atlantis. Galahad’s reputation for perfection irritates the hell out of Trystan. Trystan’s propensity to kill everybody upsets Galahad. But the attraction between them is undeniable and growing stronger all the time.

As danger mounts and romance swirls, can these two powerful warriors settle the past and find their happily ever after?

I truly cannot even begin to express how impressed I am with this book.

If you'd told me before I started it that I'd be giving it 5 stars, I'd have directed you to the nearest loony bin. It's true I gave the first two books in this series 5 stars, but my expectations were a lot lower on this one because:

- It's M/M, a category I have very little experience of and don't really gravitate towards
- Neither of those characters sounded appealing to me, initially
- I remember being mildly disappointed with the third book in this series when it came out 2 years ago

But I am SO GLAD that I didn't let me prejudices stop me from picking this book up. It's hilarious, brilliantly complex, and has some of the most amazing witty banter and relationship development that I've EVER read.

I have now read this entire series and this book is in a tie for my favorite book of the series with My Untrue Love. It might actually be a tad bit better.

This is a beautiful journey of a story. It is a true enemies-to-lovers book with the two greatest warriors from opposite sides of a horrific war.

Galahad has been banished from Camelot because he woke up and realized he was fighting on the side of evil and decided to take a stand. A year after his banishment, the regime has changed and his family wants him home. Gwen (from book 3) asks her adopted brother, Trystan, to find Galahad and bring him home. Trystan is a gryphon and fought against Galahad. He sees him as evil and complicit and would rather kill him; however, he loves his found family and agrees to go fetch Galahad.

The journey for them (Trystan, especially) to go from enemies to delighted lovers in awe of each other is spectacular and SO SO satisfying. Trystan pretty quickly finds Galahad and they begin a journey to kill Trystan's enemies and save the world.

Galahad is such a fascinating character. He is pretty perfect. It's absolutely ridiculous how he's capable and blessed and talented and ABLE. How this author can write such a Mary Sue character but also make him nuanced and deep and flawed? Ugh, the artistry!

Because Galahad is nuanced and has a Bad side. He is coming to terms with living a life that betrayed all he believed in. He believed he was protecting the innocent while he was committing genocide. And now, he is "living a life of truth" and doing his best to not kill anyone for any reason.

Trystan is hilarious. The level of annoyance and puzzlement he has over Galahad makes for the most comedic interactions.

Both of these men grow and change. And the path they go on to do so is BEAUTIFUL. The love and trust they develop for each other? IT'S SO GOOOOD!!!!

Safety deets
- Trystan is pretty casual in his view of sex and slept around quite a bit in the past. Since seeing Galahad, he hasn't been with anyone.
- Galahad hasn't had sex with anyone. He needed to feel that it could be true and the first person for whom he feels that way is Trystan.
- No other people in this story. Galahad gets hit on quite a lot, and Trystan is jealous/possessive, but there is no one else.
- A LOT of violence. While Galahad doesn't want to kill anymore, Trystan has NO compunctions about ending lives left and right.
- The epilogue shows them together and about to marry, but already bonded. I was a little sad not to see farther into their future.

Gannon is extraordinarily talented at wielding flashbacks for dramatic tension. It should be studied in a lab because I don't think I've encountered anything like her books. The dual timeline structure contributes to an unreliable narrator that *should* feel fake but doesn't. When the reveal finally happens, it's phenomenal because the foreshadowing is perfectly amped up throughout the novel. It's the most surprising yet obvious plot twist in the world. This is like the fourth book where she's done this, so it's not a one-off.

Anyway. Big fan of this series. Certainly a lot of things to critique, but I respect an author who swings this hard. Gannon understands romantic ships in a way I wish other authors would — I'm in a freaking drought here!

This book was hilarious. HILARIOUS, I say! The story was fantastic - exciting and adventurous, with perfectly paced character growth. Trystan and Galahad are brilliant.

Absolutely lives up to my love for the first three books in the series.

Best Knight Ever can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone, but for *Even More* enjoyment, I would recommend reading The Kingpin of Camelot before Best Knight Ever.

Drat, Drat and Drat

I finished this slightly gobsmacked, this had none of the charm, humour, and energy of the previous books, at least for me, I skated through it, skim reading a little when things started to feel a little long winded.

For years, gryphon Trystan and Camelot’s most admired knight - Galahad fought on opposite sides of the brutal Looking Glass Campaigns, a campaign that almost eradicated the gryphons. Now Trystan finds himself on an undesired quest to locate Galahad and bring him back to Camelot, at the request of his new clan, and Galahad with secrets that will more than surprise Trystan, has his own quest, one he is determined to fulfil without killing anyone. What neither count on is the immediate attraction they feel. The two men have every reason to hate each other, but each moment together ensures hate is the last thing on their minds.

There were small moments of humour and charm but not as a rich strand running throughout the book.

I’m still double blinking when it comes to my feelings about this book…...how the hell did I not love it!

Cassandra Gannon has an unique writing style that works perfectly for me! I love her books and this one is no exception! I love that Galahad and Trystan heal each other and that they appreciate what the other me brings to the table.
Ms Gannon always writes quirky characters, and this time it's no exception. Galahad is blonde, has lavander eyes and he excelles at everything he does: every snack he creates becomes the best in the kingdom, he invents training techniques, he rock climbs, he swimmers, he's perfect. Trystan is his counterpart: he finds anything or anyone he looks for, he wins every battle he's involved in, he "looks like an angel", everyone has heard of him and is consequently afraid of him... He also can't feel(theoretically no gryphon can feel).

From they'd differences and similarities a battle between them ensues that ends just so very satisfyingly. I recommend this book if you want to laugh like crazy and to she'd a few years along the way as well.

PS: you kind of need to read the previous book to really enjoy this one, but that one and all the series really is amazing, so you have nothing to loose.

What I like about this series, and Trystand and Galahad's story in particular, is how the characters can hold so many dichotomies at the same time. These two are disciplined and ferocious, sincere and sarcastic, stubborn and vulnerable, smart and ridiculous, and so troubled and loving.

The characters, the attention to detail when it comes to weaving in elements of fairy Tales, the fantastical adventures ... this story has everything. Somehow it can be so ridiculous, and still tell a profound story of the cost and repercussions of war. I love this story. I love Trystan and Galahad. I am grateful for this book.

DNF @ 40%, skimmed the rest

I just became incredibly bored by this story. It was so repetitive. I enjoyed the beginning a lot, and I liked the characters. I thought this was going to be a new favorite because I’ve loved everything I’ve read from CG before. But I found the situations these two got in to get old very fast. It was basically. “Galahad is so nice and has to help someone out, Trystan advises against this, Galahad inevitably pisses someone off and they attack him, Trystan has to help with the fight, Galahad makes the world a better place, rinse and repeat”. This book could have easily had page count cut down. It sucks because this is Gannon’s only queer book (from my understanding) so I wanted to love this one extra, but that was really not the case here. I’m going to read the rest of the series for sure and I’m still excited to, but this was just too repetitive for me to enjoy.

I was at about 46% before it finally wrung a laugh of disbelief out of me, not just a smile or smirk. Reluctantly. Because that is what happened and it switched from a 4 star to a 5 star for me. Galahad slowly won me over despite my cynicism. And from then on I was hooked.

NOTE: to fully appreciate this story I feel like you must start with the previous book "Kingpin of Camelot". Otherwise you won't appreciate these characters as much. And we are looking at a very well done M/M story folks, enemies to lovers (spoiler). HOT too.

Its the story of Trystan, he is given the task of retrieving Galahad for Gwen and Avi- whom he sees a his clan and Family. He would do anything for them, even go find (and bring back in 1 piece) his hated enemy. Trystan is very factual and confident while Gal is open and single minded in his task. The truth must be told but only in creative ways, so naturally a lot is left out. They have an adventure, Gal with his treasure hunt and Trys with his vendetta and its all great fun while the book clips along nicely.

I felt like Trystan: I had to laugh about Galahad and all his insane accomplishments and shake my head in disbelief. He is truly perfect. I think what tipped me over was how Galahad was learning the secret language of dolphins. Hilarious. That whole aspect became something I looked forward to on each page, like a golden nugget of fun just waiting for me to dig up and treasure.

At first it felt a bit contrived but as you follow Gal and learn more about him, it becomes endearing. I will probably buy this book and re-read it for years to come. I had 16 highlights by the time I finished and if I had had internet connection consistently there would have been more!

The author CLEARLY had fun with this story. In some stories I wish for more banter, more conversation between the main characters- for this book Trys and Gal have long, dry wit filled dialogue that is almost too much (especially towards the end). So I found myself skipping a bit to get to what happens next! It does not disappoint.

I find these wacky and you have to be in the right frame of mind to read them. This one is a m/m. She had a lot of filler chapters to give depth and history to the characters between the story chapters which were trying too hard to be funny. The romance, was.... ok??

I just didn't connect with it and found myself skimming a lot.

There is a lot to love in Best Knight Ever. The ultimate enemies-to-lovers; Trystan and Galahad are the greatest warriors of their people and fought on opposing sides in the Looking Glass war. Their fame/infamy ensures that everyone knows who they are but few people have taken the time to know the actual person. People are usually too scared of Trystan and most everyone has put Galahad on a pedestal.

Trystan is tasked to find and bring Galahad back home and since Trystan will do anything for his family, he agrees to bring him back alive and unharmed. Trystan speaks in sarcasm and his dry humor is one of the best parts of the book.

Galahad is on a quest for treasure so he can open a free art school for children. He is burdened by his actions during the war and is determined to make the world a better place in the aftermath. He is funny and kind and sort of awkward. He is constantly in ridiculous situations.

These two find an equal in each other and it was so sweet. They’re warriors and the Looking Glass campaigns have affected them in different ways but in a fundamental way they are able to understand each other and then respect and then love.

This author is so good at building a relationship, increasing the tension, and getting you fully invested in the people. And I was. I loved it.

What I loved: Trystan being a total grump, but quickly declaring that the irritating Sir Galahad and his lovely violet eyes were “under this care”. Swoon! And also Galahad’s whole chaotic golden retriever persona (his ridiculously escalating feats of perfection never failed to make me chortle), and the heart eyes he had for his gryphon. I also loved seeing the entire Skycast clan (Midas, Gwen and Avalon from The Kingpin of Camelot) again, it was just pure dopamine whenever they interacted with Trystan.

What I was less sure of: I had emotional whiplash while reading this book. Trystan and Galahad had been on opposite sides of the war, and both characters had a lot of trauma to work through. Some of the flashbacks had me sobbing, which I generally consider to be a good thing, but sometimes those scenes were immediately after a hilarious line so I was still in the middle of laughing! That confused my brain.

All in all, despite some parts not feeling like a smooth read, I definitely FELT this book. I also really enjoyed the author’s note, which explains how Cassandra Gannon came up with the story and what she took inspiration from. Such a creative mind.

I wanted to love this book, and I did love some of it, but this didn't grab my interest nearly as much as the previous book in the series. The heroes were basically in love at first sight, so there was very little romantic tension, which I don't always mind in novellas, but this is too long of a book for that. Tristan and Galahad are very adorable and they are super sweet together. Maybe I'm just a grinch lately, but there just wasn't enough conflict for me to really love this book.

ok so this book is very zany and chaotic, which is like half fun and half annoying. (please note: i have not read any of the other books in this series and this is my first book by this author.) i ended up loving the MCs, but the book definitely drags on …

“This would be a good time to tell me you’re crazy about me, by the way.”

“You make me crazy. Does that count?”

MCs: annoying perfect but banished knight Galahad of Camelot and gruff gryphon warrior Trystan
tropes: opposites attract (grumpy/sunshine), enemies to lovers, slow burn?, , virgin MMC
mood: silly medieval meets too modern? idk this was all over the place

likes:
● idiots to lovers (one of my faves!): i think they’re both idiots, they both think the other is an idiot, but also they’re eventually (finally!) lovers. idiot as a pet name is superior.
● i had to warm up to him but galahad is sweet baby boy and he deserves the world. he’s so annoyingly perfect and talented and earnest, it’s infuriating and endearing (so we see trystan’s dilemma). the man can do no wrong, sorry!

“A lot of men think I’m handsome.” He offered, testing the waters.

Trystan grunted, unimpressed with Galahad’s claim. “Perhaps most men don’t notice you’re an idiot.”

● re: slow burn? this book has been cock blocking me since like 25% and it KNOWS what it’s DOING OK. the TENSION is exquisite and honestly better than the . this book is 1000% the slow seduction of Trystan Airborne (and me, the reader).
● trystan … oh trystan … he’s down bad. i love that he threatens to murder everyone for the love of his life :’) he can call galahad my knight forever and i’d be happy. him slowing recognizing emotions is so heartwarming and also fucking hilarious.

● LOVE AS CARE TAKING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
● overall it was a fun romp! i laughed quite a bit at all the insanity (not too unlike trystan, my guy). not a ton of conflict between the couple themselves.

dislikes:
● ok so i don’t like which means i am really on a roll lately for tropes i dislike. isn’t really my jam because it is usually accompanied by . this book didn’t really go there too much because trystan is a gryphon and gryphons don’t have feelings, so there was some reluctance and insecurity that made these tropes more bearable and even kind of fun.
● soooo much dialogue? half the time i didn’t even know where they were, i just knew they were talking endlessly.
● pacing is a little slow. long chapters filled with long repetitive dialogue. and near the end it’s just nonsense romantic sayings over and over again, dear god.

steam:
● the steamy scenes were also full of dialogue, like almost ridiculous amount of dialogue. honestly the longest ever according to the length of conversation that took place during them LOL.
● THAT BEING SAID, the sexual tension throughout most of this book is SO GOOD. both MCs are not shy about showing their desire for one another even though they don’t do anything about it for quite a chunk of the book
● they do ALOT of their flirting in front of others, usually idiots trying to kill them. they really get off on it, it’s pretty hilarious and also INFURIATING (affectionate)
● i guess i just have to say it … surprising amount of mentioned given how bland most of the steam was ??? i was pleasantly surprised.
● the final of our sweet knight was pretty anticlimatic … another case of me enjoying the build-up more than the final act itself.

One of his fingers ran down Galahad’s chest, like he just couldn’t help himself. Creating a warm path on his cool skin. Gathering up water droplets on his finger and then sucking it dry in his mouth.

I find it slightly ironic I was like "the world is absolutely terrible, Romanceland/RWA is terrible - I just want to read lighthearted fun candy reads"

... And I've read 2 rather heavy romances - ones that ~subtly discuss so many heavy issues - prejudice, racism, injustice, being an ally, overcoming your past and own prejudice, literally entirely changing who you are ...

Galahad is clearly - CLEARLY - suffering from severe PTSD. (Trystan is too... but it's ... not as centered?)
I loved that Gal and Trys are both THE BEST AT EVERYTHING EVER and so entirely crazy badass.
Like - when I was reading Kingpin of Camelot I desperately wanted Trystan to get his HEA but I was like "WHO WOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM? WHO IS PERFECT ENOUGH?"

AND ... of course it's beyond perfect Galahad!
TBH I don't :X remember much of Kingpin/if Galahad was mentioned etc - like - he's literally annoyingly perfect.

BUT! He's also a giant fucking mess. He walks [ok rides] in circles. He's got a LOT of enemies - pretty much everyone wants to kill him. He's annoying AF. he's annoyingly *perfect* - and yet he's so incredibly imperfect and lovable.
Same with Trystan, and his grumpy murderous ass. (Who knows how his bodycount works.)

However. Dear god their lack of communication.
And both of them being SO UNCERTAIN ...

I will say it kinda dragged at parts.

Also ... I mean call me a hater who quaffs the haterade. I'm not sold on Avi.
She's cute yes, but she annoys me more than I like her. "The child knows everything." (Yeah, she does. SO WHY DOES SHE SPEAK SO POORLY.) I can't remember how old she is - 4?6? I thought six ... if she's 6 she should know how to read...
I hate her plurals. It annoys the shit out of me. I do not find it cute at all. Especially as I think it's overused.

Ok. So that being done - I did like all the subtle threads. And oh my gosh while Gal's a mess and secretive and not he's also incredibly open - and his "plan to seduce" Trystan.
And the TENSION - man it's OFF THE CHARTS CHEMISTRY.
I can absolutely see myself re-reading this book.

Can't wait for [Esmerelda's? book] - the wicked witch I think?

And more in this series.

This book ... Solid C if not C+ I think

So cute

I really liked this adventure romance style book. Trystan and Galahad were both extremely cute and extremely cute together. I love how the author has created this world of fairy tales, legends, nursery rhymes and modern stuff mixed together. Galahad's crazy accomplishments and Trystan's creative kill counting cracked me up. I highly recommend this series!

Fiercest enemy? These two were friendly from the moment they met and within a few pages there was lust and talks of seduction…

I enjoyed most of the book, but the dialogue got extremely repetitive. The intimate scenes were awkward with soo much talking.

I wish there was more adventure, world building, and treasure hunting with less miscommunication, internal conflict, and repetition.

Trystan and Galahad were cute. I loved seeing their relationship develop. The quest plot surrounding their relationship is what brought the book down for me a bit. I just could not get into it. This was still a fun read though.

3.5-4 stars

I loved Trystan in the previous book and was so excited when I found out he would be getting his own HEA. This was such a fun opposites attract, grumpy sunshine MM romance. The banter between Galahad and Trystan had me laughing out loud throughout and it was amusing to hear about all of Galahad's inventions and accolades. Cassandra Gannon is so imaginative and creative! She puts such a unique spin on these retellings. The sexy times between Trystan and Galahad were hot, but all of them took place at unconventional times and locations (which was both a good and bad thing to me LOL)

As much as I loved these two together, I do think the book could have been quite a bit shorter. It felt like I was reading this forever and the entire book was basically one drawn out road trip filled with shenanigans and death/the threat of death. It was still a cute and enjoyable read though and I plan to continue on with the series.

this book was such a funny combination of over the top mixed with an important story of character growth. at times it was a little dissonant but overall i thoroughly enjoyed myself.

i’ve read - i think - 3 books by this author now. and while all 3 have a similar joy simmering just under the surface they were not carbon copies of one another with different titles. i was a little nervous about opening another one to find characters who use the same phrases and act the same ways as those in a previous book but it’s clear she has this gigantic world built out in her head. i remain impressed.

It took me months to finish this book and it was sooo good! I found it very funny the first time around but was intimidated by starting this book first and having to piece together the entire world so I put it on pause. Re-starting was super easy and the connection between Galahad and Trystan was perfection! I laughed so much during this and had to keep re-reading sections just because I loved it so much.

This year has been rough for 5 star books but this is definitely one! Wish they had a bonus epilogue because I was sad to say goodbye.
