In a small-town Montana school at age 12, Brent Weeks met the two great loves of his life. Edgar Allan Poe introduced him to the power of literature to transcend time and death and loneliness. Fate introduced him to The Girl, Kristi Barnes. He began his pursuit of each immediately.

The novel was a failure. The Girl shot him down.

Since then–skipping the boring parts–Brent has written eight best-selling novels with the Night Angel Trilogy and the Lightbringer Series, won several industry awards, and sold a few million books.

Brent and his wife Kristi live in Oregon with their two daughters. (Yeah, he married The Girl.)

This series contained so many flashes of brilliance. A good hard magic system, deep and interesting lore, fun characters, exciting fight scenes, and political intrigue that was actually really entertaining - plus a dash of romance.

There was a lingering sense of fatphobia I would have loved to have seen approached differently, and particularly in the final book some of characters voices felt very similar, making it hard to differentiate between the POV's. In the final book, there seems to be quite a significant shift in tone which impacted tension. The softening of the magic system, and various (including literal) deus ex machina lowered the stakes. It was a shame that this coincided with the culmination of may plot threads as it did rob a few from their full satisfaction.

This is however undoubtedly a very good series that has an impact on the future of fantasy readers and authors alike, and one that I will remember fondly.

After reading the first book I wasn’t sure what to think I try to avoid gratuitous swearing and sex in the books I read and this one had more than I was used to or felt was necessary but the story and characters were interesting enough that I didn’t want to give up on the series. As a mom of four young boys(for reference the oldest is 6 so very young) I am always thinking would I want my sons to read this when they are older and I felt pretty strongly as I read the first two books that the answer was a hard no unless they were much much older but then in the later books I came to appreciate that the authors addition of sex, sexuality and preoccupation with both is not just for the Hollywood effect(think game of thrones etc.) but really just reflections of real life which involves sex for a vast majority of the adult population so once I got past my controversy over whether or not the sex was necessary I really enjoyed the series, it is complex enough to keep all of the books interesting but not so complex I worried the author would pass away before completing the series(for those who got my reference one of my sons is named Perrin and we should totally be friends) I also enjoyed the surprises throughout the series about the main characters, the twists though sometimes a little under explained in my opinion were fascinating and unexpected most of the time. Overall I throughly enjoyed the series but I would say that in the last book I felt the author left some things not tied up as well as I would’ve liked and the plot/details seemed a little muddled but I will probably read these again in the future. The audiobook’s narrator is excellent as well which made it all the more enjoyable.

Overall for me it was a very solid series, and doubly enjoyable because the author lived near me. I would say the strength of the series was that it was constant action and page turning. The plot definitely moves at a good clip. Character development and world building was a little lacking perhaps because of that. The “magic” system was very interesting and unique, very much like a Brandon Sanderson series in its quality. Without any spoilers I was a bit let down by the ending. It was a little reminiscent of the “Lost” tv series. A lot of questions and build up and then for me a little bit of a cop-out ending.

Wonderful world building, magic systems, and bureaucracy depth in the twists and turns of the books character relationships.

A little immature in it's portrayal of woman, violence, and sexual interactions. The above aspects of the books make these later faults feel like distractions as you go along, but they are still distracting.

Perfect fodder for a TV series, where writers could mature aspects of the writing but have a strong foundational story to tell.

I really can’t overstate how much this series is perfectly in line with what I want to read. The characters are engaging, unique, believable, and likable. The plot is unpredictable and finds a nice middle ground between hallmark and grimdark. The world is interesting and the book has something meaningful to say. Overall I absolutely loved it and I can’t think of any fans of politically-inclined fantasy I wouldn’t recommend it to.

An engaging series that left me wanting more after every book! Brent Weeks does an amazing job building relationships between the reader and the characters, helping readers fully immerse in a world of its own kind. You get to see development, not just in the protagonist, but in numerous characters as the story evolves beyond a simple-fantasy.

Amazing books! I listened to the audiobooks, I highly recommend them. While there is plenty of action, the power of these books is really the character design, dialogue, character development, and political intrigue. I laughed aloud, I cried, and I felt rage at fictional characters.

Very much enjoyed this series. I loved how so many stories were intertwined all to come together at the end. I’m sad to be done and to say goodbye to so many fun characters.

Good series with a good and original concept. Really enjoyed the "previously in this series" in the later books to prompt me with what had previously gone on.

Enjoyed the series so much! You really need to pay attention to each character as they develop as they are so entwined throughout the series.
Such excellent entertainment! I read books for entertainment, and that was what I got! I was sad to see the series end.

I have like 300 pages left, but sort of fell out of it... Still good book! Not the reread type since it gets kind of dark
