From the preface.... "It is hoped that this book will be helpful to all practitioners of the space arts--to illustrators, photographers, nonrepresentational painters, sculptors, architects, decorators, industrial designers, art instructors and their students. Its purpose is an orderly clear and simple analysis of the elements and principles upon which all visual art is built" Maitland Graves. New York, 1951
Unfortunately the online description of this book is so wonky as to be comical - but this is one of my "go to" books about good use of color and design with in artistic composition because it talks about color and design from a big picture "universal" perspective rather than a dictatorial, preachy "do it this way cause I said so" manner. This book is probably a professional artist's reference handbook rather than a beginner's text - even though I met and fell in love with this book as a high-school art student.
