I can see the bodies of three men lying on the ground so I drop my gun and raise my hands where she can see them. The same voice tells me that the only reason she didn’t shoot first and ask questions later is because she saw me shoot one of the men that was trying to get away. I tell her that there is another one back in the ravine that was there to kill anyone who came into the yard except his confederates. She asks me who I am, so I explain how I came to be here at this time. She has been in the house shooting from a window up until now when she steps out of the house and tells me I can pick up my gun, but not to get any ideas.
Nephi Johnson, whose father was a White and his mother Nez Perce. Plus his father was a Mormon and majority of White Christians did not like them. In fact they would run the Mormon's out of town. Racism stretched its ugly tentacles everywhere it could reach and squeeze those who would allow it to bury its ugliness. Nephi Johnson fought in the War Of Succession for the North. After the war, he heads out West as so many ex-solders did, hoping to find a better life. There were also gangs raiding murdering and looting any and all who get in they way. Nephi Johnson helps a young lady and her son Luke were attacked by one of these gangs who were following orders to drive them off their farm..it almost worked. This is another road that we travel, religious persecution, that reason is why so many different folks emigrated to the West from the East coast. Toleration of folks because of religion, ethnicities and other human frailties are exposed. Everyone who read about Nephi or Nehi Johnson and his friends Levi aka Cajun, Moses a freedman are all men to ride the river with. I hope that the authors of this adventure of "Nehi's Code," will continue to write more about the adventures that involves , this young man whose looking for a future in this wonderful country.
Nehi is traveling west after the Civil War when he encounters a woman and her young son being attacked by villains from the small town. A carpet beggar has taken over control of the town marshal and some business owners. They have lured husbands from their homes and left defenseless women who are threatened by the marshal and his gang of outlaws. Nehi is a Morman and knows about religious persecution. He meets up with Moses a black man who was trying to free Negroes to move to safety in the west. Together they helped the woman by strenthening her cabin and protecting her from the outlaws. They soon learn that there are three other women who are in their homes. Other Negroes find Nehi and the women and they spread out to help the women manage their farms. There is violence and compassion as Nehi becomes found of the woman he works with. When the four husband's return, Moses continues his journey to help freed slaves and Nehi leaves the husband with the woman, that he loves. When Nehi leaves the area he continues on his solitary journey.
This husband and wife team have written a compelling, family-centered story with realistic characters that enlighten each reader. I would recommend this book to any reader.
A tale of how good triumphs over evil in the time of Missouri's reconstruction
The Voughts have crafted an entertaining page-turner featuring a Civil War veteran who becomes a rescuer to four women whose husbands were lured from home by the prospect of a lucrative compensation. Their absence enabled an unscrupulous carpenter to attempt to steal their land. His plans were thwarted by the ex soldier with high scruples. An entertaining read, marred only slightly by the description of a horse and a dog that was a bit extreme. Still, it was a good read, which as thoroughly enjoyable.
Great Western to read even if you don't like them.
This is a really great story about the West after the war. I really enjoyed the fast paced story and the reading of it. Nehi is traveling West after the war. This story tells of him running into problems from the start. It seems like he is a magnet for trouble. He even meets up with other men he fought with during the war. This story has parts so funny you will laugh at and others just make you want to cry. I really loved the story and would love to read other stories about Nehi and his travels.
An EV. & EV. Western Missouri Western Action Adventure (NC)
EV. & EV. have penned a Western Missouri western action adventure titled "Nehi's Code" which begins with a young man arriving to help a woman and her son on their farm while the husband and father are on a trail drive. While the men of the four farms are gone the cowboy, his dog and horse help running and rebuilding the farm. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Probably one of the worst written books I've read. It read almost like a stream-of-consciousness, and the grammar and punctuation were virtually non-existent. That being said, the storyline moved along rapidly, almost too fast in some places. Not to mention the title on the Kindle Addition says "Nehi's Code" whereupon the name of the main character is Nephi. I'm also not in favor of the author reiterating his religious beliefs in the book.
Nephi doesn't look for trouble, but trouble finds him. He gets ambushed and his horses are killed. Mysteriously a horse and dog appear. They find a man getting to shoot whoever comes out of a ranch house. He meets a woman who has already taken out some of the raiders. Nephi decides to stay and help her. He meets treo men he had worked with during the Civil. War. Together they help the community .
I felt that it's the kind of book that I would like it is a great story and have read a good many versions of the land hogs that try to railroad others and con others to own a town when the West first opened. There are a lots of places that cattle barons try to own other and their towns.
For those of us who like an old fashioned western story that will keep the movement fast , twist and turns that you don't see coming and flow characters that seem to be real. This one is a keeper and I will be watching for more work from these authors.
There is plenty of action in this story to keep the reader's interest and then real human-interest interaction among the main characters is masterfully portrayed by these gifted authors!
I really enjoyed this book. It is interesting and exciting. I will be praying for the Author that God will open his eyes before it’s too late. (Prayers from an ex-mormon)
I enjoyed this story very much. It didn't end like I thought it would. Thank you Edward and Eunice Bought for sharing your writing talents with us. I will be definitely reading more of your books.
This is a good read about life after the civil war. People not believing in slavery go on about life the way it was meant to be. Remember to love thy neighbor as thyself.
I found this book to be a very enjoyable read with interesting characters and a Great plot set in a very interesting period of time in America history. I highly recommend this book and I hope the authors write more books about the main character.
The first person narrative is not a very boring style. It is alright for a short news report but not for a full length novel. I tried to finish it but couldn't.
The story is great!!! I really enjoyed the story line. The author needs to learn how to write conversations. The he said she said in the book is cumbersome and does not flow.
I enjoyed the book and very unusual form of writing. One thing I did NOT enjoy was their use of the word "that" when it was needed. Even so, the story was entertaining with lots of twists and turns.
This was a great action packed adventure that gives you an opportunity to get the feel for what the old west was all about, the good the bad and what could be done when honest, hard working people got together in a common cause.
Good western. Nehi heading west after the war, stops in Missouri to help a women and her young son keep from losing their farm to a carprtbagger and crooked sheriff.
