Highland Rogues #1

The Highlander's Demand

Rate this book
Sometimes, men do the wrong thing…for the right reasons.

Buchanan Mackenzie is a new laird, and he’s about to be tested. When his half-brother is killed, he must seek vengeance or face the rage of his clansmen. Beyond spilling blood, fate offers him another solution. Taking the daughter of his enemy will appease his angry men, but it leaves him struggling to find peace over making a hostage of a woman.

What sort of man settles his disputes with a helpless woman?

Rhedyn Lindsey has been raised to shoulder her duty. For her kin and clan, she will make the best of a future that will be decided based on alliances. But she never expects it to come in the form of being taken as a hostage.

In an instant, her life is turned inside out. Perhaps for the best, though, for the alternative would have been to see her father's blood spilled. Now she’s at the mercy of a man who has every reason to hate her. Regardless of what fate throws her way, she won’t crumble. She’ll stand up to Buchanan Mackenzie. Just because she’s a woman, doesn’t mean she lacks courage.

Will Buchanan Mackenzie give in to the demands of his men who seek revenge for the death of his half-brother, or will he rely on the wisdom his beloved father taught him, and take his time in deciding what will happen to his beautiful captive—Rhedyn Lindsey—a woman who has captured his attention, respect, and quite possibly his heart?

So convoluted. This book is written from at least ten different point of views, some of them don’t even matter and are barely named characters. The chapters are very long and we are transitioned back and forth to different storylines within them. I found it hard to follow and didn’t get what was happening some of the time.
The hero in this book was an utter failure as a Scottish laid, his motivations made no sense and he couldn’t stand up to anyone in his own clan. At least the heroine with the unpronounceable name was strong and consistent. But I had no idea why she cared about him at all. He was cruel and weak.
The premise of the book was nonsensical too, why is he seeking revenge? It made no sense. The heroine’s father had nothing to do with his brother’s death. Why wasn’t he seeking revenge from the man who killed him? He would start a war based on here-say and maybe that a man didn’t stop others from stopping his brother from raiding a village? What? I couldn’t even work it out.
And the side plot with the dad marrying a dead woman for his bastard son, was utterly pointless. Why was he dealing with all that when his daughter was being held captive and potentially being tortured by his enemy for a month? That whole thing was confusing.
This book felt like the author was writing a Scottish telenovela with no plan whatsoever. Just typing away and seeing where she ended up. Well I’m out, I don’t particularly care where she ended up.

Plot is intriguing but lacks writing style.
This author's grip over the vocab is pretty strong but the way to express misses the mark.

Otherwise, the characters were great.
Storyline was different. Although things happened at a fast pace. One moment Rhedyn was kidnapped and by the time night fell, our hero was almost in love🙄

Some points were boring where I skimmed the chapters. And there were some endearing moments too.

Loved the Laird

I loved Buchanan. He was such a great hero. He communicated with Redwyn and was very easy to like. He stole her because they thought her Father had killed his cousin but he liked her. She was beaten by his head of house Fenella who was quite a confusing character so then he took Redwyn as wife to create an alliance. There is another disgruntled cousin who tried to kill him and cause trouble. I also loved Cora, Buchanan's sister. I hope she has her own story.

I rate this read between okay to good. I couldn't decide. I loved the h and hr. They had passion along with a sense of duty. I know that doesn't sound sexy but it's nice to read about characters that aren't over the top emotional with no common sense for a change.

I wasn't fond of the far fetched plot. It didn't make sense. A clan would not risk the wrath of another clan with no evidence. With the exception of the h , all the rest of his clan believe with a certainty that Laird Lindsey killed Ian bc he kicked him out of a tavern. Crazy!! Like some of the author's other books it's best just to go along with it.

I give it 3.5 stars and I will continue with the rest of the series.

Maybe it is the times we live in, but I felt Rhedyn deserved better. I know it got good in the end, but if these times have thought me anything, you do not need toxic people around. You are much happier without them.

Buchanan thinks Rhedyn's dad was behind the death of Buchanan's half brother. So he takes Rhedyn to settle the score. Of course every asshole in the keep thinks she should be killed, like hello, what did she do? Where is the evidence against her dad? So Buchanan is always kind, I do not blame him, he thought he did the best thing cos he did not want to start a war. And he does look after her, but, omg everyone at the keep is horrid. I mean this book had me crying because they were so evil. And at the end everyone is forgiven, like no, I do not forgive you! Rhedyn was way too nice, I would have told them all to shove it and leave, even though Buchanan was a total hottie, and kind, just, the people! Though his sister was nice, and her champion

Oh I rambled, but hello, it made me cry cos they were so mean.

Love conquers everything, and mean people turn nice, and even evil people have happy endings (even though they totally do not deserve it). Only the baddest baddie got what he deserved.

I enjoyed it, but aye, it was sad too.

Male narrator! Oh he got me, great voices and a total feel for the story told

I don't read nearly enough historical romance set in Scotland, but after reading this book I definitely feel it need to change. It was a very good and engaging story and I liked the characters. I'm curious to read other books by Mary Wine as I think this one was my first from her

Solid story I really enjoyed

I’ve never really been a fan of Scottish historicals, but a friend recommended this one. I gave it a shot and read it almost in one sitting. Good story. I look forward to more.

This was fantastic. A new author to me. It’s very clear that this author is well versed in the time period. A very pleasant find from a goodreads medieval romance list. I will look out for more from her.

This was alright. It took me a little while to get used to the way the dialogue was written. Ye instead of you, yer instead of your, no' instead of not, me instead of my. It's written so that you can read it with a Scottish accent, but I would have preferred it if it was just written normally.

I found myself feeling bad for Rhedyn. Though she made the choice to be with Buchanan, but did she really have a choice? It was either marry him or marry Rolfe, and it was a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. It may have worked out alright in the end, but it doesn't change the fact that Buchanan kidnapped her to begin with.

Which is another matter. I don't know why the Mackenzies were so sure that Rhedyn's father was at fault for Iain's death. Why would they not blame the man who killed him? Or better yet, blame Iain for doing shitty things on someone else's land. It never really made sense to me why the Mackenzies were so hell bent on either making Rhedyn miserable or just flat out wanting to kill her.

I hope the next book has a plot that makes a bit more sense

I didn't like this book at all. It sounded like a great book when I bought it, but once I got into it, it didn't go anywhere. There wasn't much of a plot or a subplot since things just seemed to happen without any sort of thought or planning. The characters were wishy-washy and I couldn't connect with any of them, although I do think Buchanan is a man of honor, even if he did steal Rhedyn. In his own words, he did the wrong thing for the right reason.

Rhedyn is considered the enemy at the Mackenzie's. Her father was blamed for killing Buchanan's half-brother, Iain, who was raiding without Buchanan's knowledge or permission. Buchanan wants to avoid bloodshed, unlike some of his other kin, and takes Rhedyn until the truth comes out.

So, we have people in the household plotting to get rid of Rhedyn, even if Buchanan has taken a liking to her, and we have the evil cousin, Hamish, wanting to challenge Buchanan for the lairdship, since Hamish thinks Buchanan is weak and not worthy of being laird. Meanwhile, another man has been vying for Rhedyn's hand in marriage through her father with contracts and all of that and Buchanan has already married her with the blessing of the Church. Oh, and let's not forget that Rhedyn's father marries a dead woman so his bastard son can be his heir. Strange.

I found the pace of the book to be slow and uneven, and I didn't care about even one of the characters. In addition to that, there were no character descriptions other than Buchanan had dark blonde hair and topaz eyes. I saw that once. And if that's the case, who is the dude on the cover? There were no more character descriptions other than a mention that Rhedyn had hazel eyes. What about everything else for both main characters? Long hair, short hair, color of their hair--what? Why is it so hard to throw in a description or two of characters? Sorry, but it's getting frustrating for me. So many authors just don't do it and in my opinion, the romance genre depends upon it.

I also like the people on the covers of books to at least bear a resemblance to someone in the book. The guy on this cover is handsome to be sure, but from the vague description we got of Buchanan, it isn't him and since there were no descriptions of anyone else, the man on the cover remains a mystery.

Just my two cents, not that anybody cares.

End.

The plot is typical of the highland romance but the writing is kind of cold. The characters are rather flat and almost without emotion. I really couldn’t get into it. Some characters come out of the blue and bring nothing to the plot. Vychan’s dead mother being married to his father is simply ridiculous.

Mary Wine weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, deceit, secrets and murder. As the suspense builds and tensions escalate and mayhem abounds with twists and turns that will keep you wandering what's around the next corner makes this one outstanding story!

My first historical romance for the year and I think it’s going to be hard to beat!

Historical romance set in Scotland is my favourite genre to read. It’s getting harder to find 5 star reads it seems. So I’m always thrilled when one of my favourite and reliable authors has a new release. Mary Wine is one of my all time favourite historical romance authors and her books are auto-buy for me.

I really liked the main characters, Buchanan and Rhedyn. This was not a romance of insta-lust and I really enjoyed the slow burn of their attraction to each other.

I really can not fault a single thing. Highly recommend you pick up your copy of The Highlander’s Demand.

Don't feel I could give this a star rating as it's just not my style of book (and didn't want to rate it badly just because it didn't interest me at all). I'd like to know what a fan of historical romance would make of it. Nothing in the book grabbed my attention, again maybe just due to a lack of interest in romance novels on my part. There were some good bits, like openly discussing periods and fewer graphic scenes than expected, but the characters never seemed to be characters - I couldn't even picture them. Similarly the plot had no dimensions, it was pretty much just guy captures girl, falls in love with her, she loves him back, some unsuccessful attempts to derail their relationship. I think for the right reader this would be a lovely gentle read on an afternoon.

1 (should've DNF'd) Star

I've read many MW books in the past, hell I've even reread a few. They're usually a solid read I can enjoy. This one...not so much. Bottom line this was, and I can't stress this enough, so boring. 😴

Many things bothered me about this one. The longer I read the more I felt confused. So many questions!

- Why were the two MCs even attracted to one another? It was decidedly odd how often they mentioned the others attractiveness yet we were never told any descriptors to give us an idea. All I knew was the hero had eyes the color of topaz. I never had any clear idea how either looked.

- Why didn't the hero protect the heroine when the head-of-house Fenella took a rod to her 20 TIMES?

- Why did everyone acts as if stealing a bride was so distasteful and disrespectful? It was the highlands...I thought that was just how they courted?? It was spoken about as if it was the greatest offense. I thought it was a time honored sort of thing back then but 🤷‍♀️

- Why did this seemingly bitter mean old woman (Fenella, head-of-house) suddenly act remorseful when Hammish tried to kill the heroine Rheadyn when just a few scenes back she was gaslighting him when he returned? Not to forget she BEAT THE HEROINE 20 TIMES WITH A ROD!

- Why did everyone act so goddamn mad over Iain being killed? He was a grade A douchebag but I guess we must avenge him!!

- Was Rheadyn spirited and intelligent or meek and composed? She swung so often from one side to another I couldn't place her personality. Especially when around the hero because "oh gosh he's so handsome! No wonder they warn women away from men!". 🙄

- For a petite chick who got hit with a rod 20 TIMES on her arms and back this chick didn't act like it. I expected mentions of soreness, likely being unable to move at all those first days especially after taking hits to her shoulders but nah, apparently the rod was a mere tickle. She's up and moving around and we only get mentions of her bruises. What the hell? So unrealistic!!

- What was with thinking the hero wasn't the villain on repeat? Was the heroine trying to absolve herself for her feelings or choices? It was too repetitive.

- Why wasn't the maid Innis who had high hopes of elevating herself to being the laird's mistress who was the cause of the heroine getting beat with a rod AND the one who planned and executed having the heroine go to the stables for Hammish to murder NOT made to pay for her actions?????

Literally any other book the hero would have been upset the heroine was nearly murdered under his protection. And he damn well would have questioned why the heroine was at the stables in the first place, which this dumbass DID do, but after the heroine yelled that she went because he kissed her their convo ends and is never brought up again. Huh? Why didn't the hero question her more? Clearly something was afoot if she thought he asked her to meet him there. Why didn't he ask WHO told her and to show him which servant escorted her there?!?? WHY WAS THE HERO SO DUMB?! Why did no one question this?!????

- Why oh why did the author write the heroine so dumb as well? When the maid Innis escorts Rheadyn to her old bedroom in the north tower the day after their wedding night all poor whiny Rheadyn can think about is how this is a common occurrence in most marriages, that she shouldn't be surprised, or hurt. Then thinking she committed herself to loneliness by taking the birth control tea Shona gave her so she wouldn't even have a child. And then the hero Buchanan arrives obviously annoyed his wifey ain't in his chamber. He questions if she wants to live separately but she denied it and then he said "So, ye will not be instructing the staff to set yer supper here again."

Naturally I expected the heroine to deny it and tell him she never ordered anything and that a maid brought her here, much like the stables. BUT NO. This pathetic creature just stands there and thinks this: "She didn't know what to say. She was afraid that if she spoke, she'd shatter the image of him standing there."

What. The. Fuck. Why wouldn't you deny it?!

Better yet, WHY did the author blatantly avoid all admissions and questions about the skanky maid Innis who's the culprit of all of these issues? Can you not work around revealing her just yet without outright ruining and making your MCs act so foolish and idiotic?!

- Fenella the head-of-house and Innis were clearcut villain type character early on, and about 40% in the author shifts direction in Fenella who is suddenly just a sad remorseful mother mourning her dead son. While Innis is still on the hunt to become the laird's mistress by any means. Yet, nearly every attempt was thwarted each time or didn't accomplish anything. And by the end the author saw fit to give Innis a HEA of her own by marrying the Butler. What???? Oh poor little Innis all alone in the world and desperate for love and security. Let's forgive all her betrayals and selfishness. So fucking dumb.

- I won't even TOUCH the completely redundant character of Cora, Buchanan's sister. Her actions were so contrary. And just dumb.

- The hero Buchanan was nearly as boring as the heroine. He does nothing to ever improve my opinion of him. Sounded like he wasn't well liked as Laird, couldn't handle his clan and was far too beta to handle everything that happened. He never really took action for anything. Meh.

There were a lot of inconsistencies and contrary actions and characters in this book. I finished it because I planned to read the series if I can survive it. But not book two because Cora isn't worth my time.

It was so frustratingly boring. The pacing was clunky and literally nothing ever exciting happened. Even the MCs kissing or being together was completely uninteresting. Buchanan and Rheadyn had absolutely NO chemistry. Flat characters. Boring personalities. Add in unrealistic handling of situations and conflicts to the entire story lacking depth of any kind. And the heroine Rheadyn was the most uninteresting and uninspired character I've read all year. Her inner thoughts were such a slog to get through.

Fantastic story- can’t wait for the next in this series.

This is the first in a new series by this author and it’s terrific. A laird’s daughter, Rhedyn, knows her duty and her role in the clan. She also loves her family. She’ll do her duty, marry for the good of her clan, and be a dutiful daughter. It’s what she was born to do.
One evening, she is caught up in an unexpected conflict with another clan, and their leader, Buchanan Mackenzie, decides he will mete out justice in his own fashion. In an unexpected move, Rhedyn is torn from the future she expected and taken to a place where she is tossed into conflict, danger, and intrigue. But will Buchanan protect her or leave her to the wolves?
This was so good I couldn’t put it down. It has romance, intrigue, and it was written with a host of interesting characters. Each had their own part to play, and often their fortunes were not what one expected. It was refreshing. I am really looking forward to the next in this series. I can’t recommend this book enough-LOVED it!

Life was harsh in the highlands were clans sometimes battled each other. It could be brutal and on one such night when the half brother of Buchanan Mackenzie was killed, he knew he had to seek vengeance to appease his clan.
That came in taking the daughter of his enemy, Rheyn Lindsey to stike a blow to her father. But he did not want to take a woman but she asked he not kill her father.
What Buchanan does not expect is her to stand up to him and he tries to make the right decision in what to do with her. Will he see that she is more than just the daughter of an enemy but is a woman?
I truly enjoyed this story that took me on a journey of two people who unexpectedly found they may have more in common than expected.
Cannot wait to read more in this series! Love these highlanders!

A captive or a wife

Rheyden was traded for what was assumed to be her father's murder of a Lairds brother! Laird did not have all the facts and took Rheyden hostage to avoid killing her father and old man! Many in the clan resented Rheyden but her clan was wealthy and when her father legitimized his son so he could have a sucessor it was more important that she marry a Buchanan to form alliances! Laird Buchanan did not treat her at first as an honored guest but slowly and surely Rheyden won over the clan and the Laird! When time came for escape will she leave with Cora Buchanan sister who believes she be given a choice?

⚔️ The Highlander's Demand by Mary Wine ⚔️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶

From raiding to highland clan wars, kidnapping and dearing escapes. Honestly, who doesn't love a good scottish historical romance novel 🫶 only the viking ones seem to be able to capture a similar energy.

5/5 stars is my rating! Mary Wine never disappoints. Her novels always leave me entranced and wishing they fid have to finish, and The Highlander's Demand is no different. This is my second time reading it, and it still held me captive. I can not wait to start on the next book in the Highland Rouges series 🙌🏻 😍

I liked it.

I really, really didn't like Buchanan when he shows up in the story. I was rooting for Rolphe.
But with the help of Cora (by the way I love her and excited for her story!) And his true nature, he comes out in a better light. H and h in the story find their way thru a tangled web of course. But the getting there is splendid!
Vychan is another I will be looking forward to along with Rolphe.

Great

Loved this book both h& h are strong willed and very intelligent. When a Mackenzie is killed laird Lindsay is accused of being the person to instigate his death so the new laird of the Mackenzie is forced to take action and ends up with the laird Lindsay daughter. With his clan bitter of the death of the clans men he is in for a battle with wills with his clan and the laws who is the center of it all. Good book now I wonder if Cora story is next I hope so

This was one of the best Highlander stories that I've ever read. I loved the way that Buchanan handled his people. Even when he was put in a tough spot he always took the best route in handling the situation. He always held to his own beliefs and honor. His wife was a spitfire and she handled him with ease after she got over being taken hostage. This story just grabbed me from page one and held on.

More Highlanders

I've been on a highlander kick this year and this is one of many that I have read for free with Amazon Kindle Unlimited. I enjoyed the quick pace and distraction of this book, a little different from some I've read though much the same plot. Yet, I enjoyed the characters even those I didn't care for at times.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Buchanan and Rhedyn are initially enemies but begin to see each other in a different light as events in their lives unfold. They battle enemies on all sides. An enjoyable enemies to lovers romance.
