Casey Renee Kiser, a.k.a. snail viXen, is an American poet who tends to explore identity and suicidal tendencies in connection with emotional and psychological abuse, the journey to self-love, and healing from complicated relationships. Her style is quite lyrical; street-quirk confessional, while her humor is cunty and confrontational, often abrupt but always unsettling. She has written over 20 poetry collections and sprinkled the realm of indie-punk lit, transgressive small press and zines. Her latest collaboration with J.J. Campbell, Altered States of the Unflinching Souls is available now.
She is editor at RaVenGh o s+ Press and has appeared in Mad Swirl, Holy&Intoxicated Publications, The Legendary, Horror Sleaze Trash, Black Petals Lit, Villain Era, Pyre Publishing, Fevers of the Mind, Paper and Ink Literary Zine, 48th Street Press, Alien Buddha Press, Down in the Dirt Magazine, Disturb the Universe Magazine, and frequents HST Quarterly. ‘C. Renee is totally out there on the edge.’ —Misfit Magazine
"Always go too far because that's where you'll find the truth." - Albert Camus
“Desperation is the raw material of drastic change. Only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape.” ― William S. Burroughs
Will to Flutter is an appropriate name for this collection of poems, which mostly features work by Casey Renee Kiser, along with twelve other writers. Each entry reflects one of the various stages of personal transformation along with some of the liminal space in between that growth. Pain, transmitted through written poetic symbolism and meter reminded me of my own fragility, of being ground down by the weight of the world, memories of broken trust, failed relationships, and figuratively getting chopped to pieces and ground up by family, friends, and lovers, accumulating scars, which hardens the skin into protective armor, and then finally one day to gracefully emerge resilient and beautiful.
The final acts speak of self-reliance, empowerment, and self-love. CRK succinctly encapsulates this concept (Thx for the Pain/I Need it for My Wings), and then her completed transformation is revealed in the inspirational rally to drag ourselves up from the depths of hell (Let it Burn). Casey’s voice is unique and compliments her work nicely. You can catch a glimpse of this butterfly fluttering through the summertime of life by checking out her spoken word clips on her GR author page.
Thank you, Casey, for sending me a digital copy of this book.
Also, Kudos to Dana Jerman for showing how urinating yourself in an intoxicated torpor can be remarkably poetic (Pissed in Black Jeans).
