I gave most of the books in Hanebado a 3-4 stars, but I was disappointed by this series. While it had a good premise (a genius girl raised as an experiment by her mother), the execution was sloppy and not interesting.
Where the series really shine for me was when it actually wasn't focusing on Ayano, but instead on the not-so-genius girls, like Nagisa. I was more interested in the girls that just had the right amount of talent, practiced hard, and had the right support system for them to succeed.
I think the series lost its sight halfway and fell to the never-ending tournament arcs trap. I mean, wouldn't it be fun if we had some stories where the girls just hang out, shopping for new equipment, or something where they had fun outside of badminton?
Overall, Hanebado started strong, but tripped half way. It'd benefit had the main character had better personality.
