A GREAT ADVENTURE STARTS OFF WITH A BANG!...AND A WHIMPER.
Axel-a town where many would-be legends find their humble beginnings. It is here that the Crimson Magic duo endeavor to leave their mark on the world...but the only kind of mark Megumin can leave is a giant, smoking crater. And most parties simply don't have room for a wizard limited to one excessively powerful Explosion per day. Sadly, Yunyun isn't doing any better. Every party-request flyer she posts reeks of desperation, and her self-confidence bar is in the red! Will no one take a chance on these poor problem children?!
One of my biggest pet peeves with light novels comes in the fact that they are 200 pages of nothing happening. This book, the third in a mildly amusing if not totally unnecessary prequel to the main KonoSuba series, has no reason to exist and spins more wheels than a big rig. Megumin has finally arrived in the town of Axel, home of novice adventurers, and from the start keeps happening upon Aqua and Kazuma in various states of worklife distress. All the while, she and Yunyun are trying to find parties and failing miserably due to their being weirdos.
This book serves no purpose from what I can tell except to get us to Megumin's grand entrance in the main series. I was so bored out of my mind trying to force my way through this book that I ultimately gave up, deciding I'd rather read something with some substance. As much as I love Yunyun and would have liked to continue seeing her grow, the boredom was not worth it.
I only hope the main series is better at investing and engaging the reader.
Thankfully this volume redeemed the series as the previous one was a big let down.
The story ended Megumin's prequel nicely and it explained everything it needed to, such as why Megumin was rejected from other parties (although I'm sure we could have already guessed), and why Yunyun wasn't a present character in the first novels of the main Konosuba series. It gave Megumin and Yunyun's relationship a wholesome pause and I hope they find each other again in later volumes of the main series.
Aside from the above I also really enjoyed the snippets of Kazuma and Aqua that are seen throughout the book
The only reason I give this less than a 5 star review is because Cecily is in this book also and I absolutely despise her character.
Not bad. I enjoyed the focus on character relationships for Megumin. It felt a little clumsy with regards to fitting in the canon, but nonetheless, it was fine. The story does move rather slow and there wasn’t that much going on until the end. I enjoyed the returning characters and I did like some of the story advancements with Yunyun. Overall though, this spinoff works for fans but it’s mostly limited to that. It doesn’t hold up on its own as nearly as much, but I honestly never expected it to. Good simple fun.
I feel kinda sad having finished this series. I love Megumin, she is probably my favourite character in the series and I thought the combination with Yun-Yun was great from start to finish. It made me feel even more sad for Yun-Yun, I wish she would find a great friend group just like Megumin has.
I also loved (part of?) the story behind Megumin's familiar. I do feel a bit unsatisfied though, I don't know enough about what and why and how and when to feel completely satisfied. That is why this volume, and this series overall, got a 4 star rating.
Honestly I'm not enjoying this side series as much as the main KonoSuba series. Megumin is just more fun when bouncing off of the other characters and Yunyun doesn't really work in that area.
