Roots of the Wicked

Rate this book
Jax Saint-Pierre is dedicated to building the success of her business and living life the way she mapped it. That is, until driven and charismatic Chase Taylorson stands firmly in her path with his arrogant charm. He was the first man to make her consider changing her strict no-relationship rule, but with her wicked past, she keeps him at a distance for his own good.Chase Taylorson is the head of a billion-dollar empire. All it takes is one chance encounter with Jax Saint-Pierre to blow up his well-organized world. Independent and feisty, she demands he check his ego at the door, forget his entitled ways, and bury his coveted bachelor status in the sand. Jax assumed he had the perfect life, but will soon come to realize, even the privileged are tethered to wicked roots.WarningThis book is an interracial romance that contains explicit language, strong sexual content, and triggers that may be offensive to some readers. If you are easily offended or triggered this may not be the book for you.NoteDespite the title of this book, it is not dark romance. Although it contains hard subject matter, this book is not this author’s usual book where bodies are dropping, and blood is spilling. Like Sankofa, this book is more about the journey of two individuals who have to glance into their pasts in order to see a way to their future. This book does contain a lot of explicit sex and drama though.

The writing is solid, as I've come to expect from Keta Kendric's books. This one, however, wasn't as addicting as the others I've read from her, but make no mistake, this is a good romance! Chase and Jax have some massive, all-consuming passion going on and it nearly ignited my Kindle lol The love Chase has for Jax is what every woman dreams of, seriously. She gives him a run for his money though. Loved her personality, her strong will, intelligence and ability to overcome the severe trauma she had experienced in her childhood. Chase's love is what helps her overcome her demons and she also heals his cold heart he thought would never be open to true love. From their very first meeting, it was fire between them and Kendric describes this effortlessly. The main critique I do have is the epilogue felt a bit rushed. Given the time and effort Kendric makes to develop the characters throughout the book, I was left feeling there should have been more in that epilogue. But, it's still a great read.

This is one of the most underwhelming books I’d read in a long time. The writing style is very mediocre. The author tells instead of shows the emotions of both primary characters. The narration has little description of both characters, and the inner point of view from both characters feel vague. Additionally, filler scenes were abundant throughout the book and the story became frustrating with two unlikable characters.

I also find the story slow-paced and it leaves too many unanswered questions. The narration was very slow in the beginning, with both main characters flat and annoying.

There’s nothing new about the plot line to this tale. Jax is supposedly a bright, fearless, vibrant woman always on the go. Chase is your typical billionaire who has it yet is missing out because he’s never had a woman who pushes his libido to the degree that he wants a relationship with him until Jax came along. (Eye-roll)

Chase tries too hard to get Jax to open up about herself as much as possible, but she takes too long to talk about her Secrets of hurts and resentments from long ago that have never gone away. These Secrets that I could care less to read about drags on and on. I find that I do not like them very much: Chase is restless and self-centered, dutiful but passive, and Jax is selfish, one sided oftentimes very angry and miserable.

The concept of the book is said to be interesting, but the execution was just so... blah. Corresponding, this is supposed to be a book about a second guessing carbon copy character that values her work and talent.., yet her body art is spoken about almost every page. I don’t think it was necessary to fill the pages of this every chance you get about this and her constant whining about not dating because she just don’t do relationships, yet Chase does something to her, until now she refuses to give in because she likes to be in control.

I was predisposed to dislike the book. The pacing was pretty bad, I was drilled to death reading it. It’s simply hard to pin down anything that I genuinely, actively liked about it.

The manner of writing is bland as well as the dry sex scenes, this novel was not enjoyable and is entirely forgettable. I feel like I've read this kind of story countless times before; yet, this one was written poorly for it didn't really tackle anything that made it stand out.

Readers who like character-driven novels of complex relationships will definitely not appreciate this tale.

Not bad but

The book was just too long and resolution was just too slow to come. I also didn’t like the ending. I wish we could have a book where the rich old white man is not a raving lunatic. It’s as cliché as the angry black woman. I also disliked how somehow Blake got rewarded for his bad behavior by “inheriting “ the company. Talk about nepotism. Also I know his first love was baseball but now that it’s not a possibility and despite his father conniving ways why did we have to throw the baby out with the bath water and have him hate the job he’s dedicated years to and is so good at?

Loved this story from start to finish

Jax was a breath of fresh air, she had piercings and tattoos and was a clever, talented young woman who owned her own business. She had a likeable character, with a sexy strut and badass attitude.
Now when we meet Chase, he made me warm to him and will him to win over Jax.
The story thread was good and kept me guessing, I did however guess the wrong person was responsible but this just added to my enjoyment of the book.
On the whole this was an entertaining read with lots of hot sweaty butt naked sex scenes which were perfectly written for ones imagination!

A great follow up

This was a great follow up from your last series. I loved the characters. I wish I knew what the H had planed for his future. And there weren't many typo's. Just a few wrong words towards the end of the book. Looking forward to the next series

Never disappointed

Keta Kendric delivers all that we have come to expect masterfully! Sexy, crazy, wicked, smart, and fun! Some dark topics, if you're familiar with the author, you know she takes it there, but the writing keeps you sympathetic, not stuck in pain. As always we have our loving alpha Male, super secure and sexy, with a dynamic Heroine who is strong yet equally vulnerable to her love. Kendric is always a good read.

Very good plot

It was a good story parts were meh it just dragged for me after a while I don’t want to give spoilers so I won’t but Chase wasn’t alpha enough for me. The plot dragged and Jax was hot and cold I would have liked it more if there were more happy times between them with out so much uncertainty on Jaxs part.

WOW. Once I started I couldn't put it down. I loved Chase from the beginning and Jax childhood made me teary eyed. The storyline and dialog was great and, for once, I didn't see the ending coming.

So good it was bad

Wow, this book may not have been the author's normal book, but this was really good. The way she tied the title to the text was amazing. I really didn't expect the ending, but it made sense. All the secrets that were revealed at the end were shockers. I would highly recommend this book. The fact that the couple was interracial really became a back story in this book.

Just ok. Started off really exciting then the whole begging thing just spoiled it. But I did feel bad for the heroine and her childhood. Also what was her dad?? Chase was ok but who spends life thinking and chasing a woman when you own and run a massive company. Was too out there for me.

Couldn’t finish

I wanted to like this book because I like the author but the more I read, the more ridiculous the plot got and I couldn’t finish the book. Generally in fiction, I can suspend belief but I think this book was packed with too many surprises and plot twists that were not necessary. I also struggled with the writing style.

Amazing

This Book was amazing not your typical Keta book but she had the dark undertones nonetheless. I might have to edit this review for later because am still trying to come out of this books world. Wow I have to say I love love love the characters of Chase and Jax especially Jax. Boy was she a spit fire but Chase was time enough for her. I would recommend this book while heartily.

Updated review (6/14/20): "We're the roots of the wicked, but we're better than what we were born from." If that don't tell you what this book is about I don't know what will. That sentence embodies the two main characters Jax and Chase. Like I said in my first part of this review this book is amazing and I enjoyed reading it just as much as the first time. I would mind giving TK story he looks like he has a good one.

Fantastic

Yes, this was quite different than the last series of books, but just as wonderfully written. The characters were fully developed with much depth. I wouldn't mind visiting them again in the future.

Why always beautiful but damaged.

Does beauty equate being damaged, and why does the confidence of the female character some off as annoying. Could not relate to any of the characters, I could not even like them.
Not the story for me.

"Roots of the Wicked" by Keta Kendric

My Rationalization:

I found the "Roots of the Wicked' quite one interesting read featuring Jax Saint-Pierre and Chase Taylorson, who were both dominant. The way this author tied the title to this story was something precious. I enjoyed the quote from the story: "The roots of wicked seeds are capable of growing into something decent and producing something special" and "The roots of the wicked had branched out and formed a beautiful unbreakable bond." Now, to get an understanding of these quotes, you will have to pick up this read to find out how well-written this author presents all to the reader. I will say here that Chase may have thought he had a privileged life, but what will happen when he finds out how it was 'tethered to wicked roots' as it has been said 'you can't choose your parents!'

I am not sure whom I felt sorrier for Jax or Chase because they both had some unhinged family members that would have you shaking your head and saying oh my god? There will be so many twists and turns that will leave you, the reader shocked as all the secrets start to come out. The characters were quite impressive, having some very complexed crazy individuals that kept you guessing to this suspenseful, shocking ending. I will say Jax's got on my nerves with the way she seemed to be so back and forth with some of her thinking; however, by the end, all was good for her new life with her family.

hMs.Kendric!!!!!!

This book was everything!!! Baby listen The love Chase had for Jax is what every woman dreams of in a man ,what every little girl dreams of when they think of Prince charming. The only thing is woman don't understand what darkness that man has seen or been through in his past that had molded him into that woman's dream guy. This book was dark it hit on a lot of what's happening in the world today, what many have suffered through before and unfortunately what some will go through to.borrow and in the future .The level of pain, hurt humiliation Chase and had suffered at the hands of the people who they trusted must in life is heartbreaking. On a little note I'm so glad Tk wasn't after Jax because I was all team Chase .This book had me laughing out loud ,anrgy ,cussing and crying all at the same time but there was the one line that had me cry like a baby is where Chase says (I would be everything this woman ever wanted because she had always been everything I ever needed) .I as a wife can only hope and pray that I have made the same impact on my husband .As always Ms.Kendric this is a home run .Please if you want a book that will move you having you laugh and thinker on a deeper level about the people, places, things, money ,love ,happiness as well as facing your deepest darkest fears and being about to know seeking help is ok than baby this what y'all need to read .Not all wicked roots produces had trees

Wow! What a story

This is a classic example of how the love of power corrupts absolutely. What happened to Jax as a child thoroughly had her mind messed up. She was obsessed about her privacy to the point where it affected any relationship she could possibly have. Chase was smitten with her the minute he saw her and was not going to give up until she was his. But Chase's social life was something Jax could not handle. There were factions that did not want Chase and Jax together that threatened to reveal what Jax was hiding all along.

This story had me from page one. I love a good dramatic mystery and this one did not disappoint. The love scenes between Jax and Chase were pure fyah. I just knew that Blake was responsible for all of Jax and Chase's relationship problems. I was shocked to see who was revealed. I was thoroughly duped.

NOTE: This book was read and listened to in sync with Audible.com. The narrators Marcio Catalano and Dyshon Carter did a wonderful job in making this story come to life. I just love Marcio's voice. I could listen to him all day.

Welll....

This book was ok.I didn't like the controlling/dominatrix nature of Jax's personality. It wasn't believable and it seemed like something to just throw in there like her bisexuality, that added nothing to her character as a whole. Both Chase and Jax has terribly sad and heartbreaking childhoods. The book got interesting to me after Chase and Jax returned from their weekend getaway on the yacht. Before that this story was dragging on. It would've been interesting to find out about the conversations Jax had with her dad and TK and to see how Chase got to the point with Blake that he was able to train him to work at the family business. The sex was at the point of being too much. To me you must have a balance in the story with content (character development, the pace of the story) and sex. If there's page after page of sex scenes without a actual story then that is a wack book. The book was going down that path but once the story picked up the exaggerated, lengthy sex scenes went away.

I loved how the author created a romantic suspense novel. I’m used to this author’s erotica, but this book presents strong suspense and mystery. My favorite sub-genres for romance.

The author drops us straight into Chase Taylorson’s life to become familiar with the character and set the pace for what follows. The opening of the book immediately sets the mood for Chase Taylorson. And we get having wealth and ambition do not guarantee happiness.

Talk about how opposite attracts! Chase’s first reaction to the smart but tough Jax Saint-Pierre was just precious. He wants her. She resists. Strong and independent natures clash to create incredible tension and conflict between them. I love how ridiculously hot these two are with each other.

What is life without a bit of tension? Outside forces rise, coming to the surface to do damage to the couple. I must admit the antagonist was well hidden, leaving a tense filled, engaging story.

To Keta Kendric, a job well done. Thanks for creating this balanced story of love and intrigue with enough satisfying steamy scenes.

Jax, Jax, Jax. I wanted to bitch slap her in the beginning of this book. She fought her feelings for Chase tooth and nail. She’s hard, strong willed and independent and she felt that being with Chase would change her. At first I didn’t understand why she felt this way but as the story progresses you will understand why she is who she is. Chase has suffered as well but I won’t give any spoilers away (Parents will f**k you up! LOL)

Keta is one of my favorite authors so when I found out that she was writing another book I couldn’t wait to pick it up. I knew it was different from her Twisted Mind Series and I would see a different writing style from her and she did not disappoint. There was drama, action and humor. There’s one scene in the book where Jax and Chase’s brother Blake go at it and when Jax’s talks about his “one nut” I laughed so hard I actually spit out my drink (just like Tonya LOL) Everyone needs to read this book.

Thank you Keta for a wonderful story.

Cute book! Loved the chemistry between Jax and Chase! And I was NOT expecting that plot twist (I spent the whole time thinking “yeah Blake did it because he is a POS” till the very end! The only part that was unnecessary/made my eyes roll were the fact that Jax was so quick to ditch Chase and not believe him and peace out of the relationship and the fact that it felt like everyone and their mother was molested as a child. The Dad was low key my favorite character and for once I was disappointed that the epilogue didn’t fully tie things up. Are TK and Jax still friends? What’s going to happen to Amanda? What’s going to happen to James? Did Jax and Chase get or will they get married? Why the hell did they decided to let Blake run the company when he is literally a human garbage can? Does Chase still earn shares? I guess it’s up to our imagination.

A Really Painful Read

*****Spoilers*****

The intimacy was off the charts but the rest of the book was a disaster. I didn't buy into Jax because I couldn't understand her and didn't really like her much. Chase was persistent and open which was endearing. If it wasn't for his pursuit, they wouldn't have made it to the end of the book together. However, the things that make this book unenjoyable are all of the typos, grammatical errors, and jumping from scene then back again plus all of the repetitive information about the same stuff over and over again, sometimes within a couple of paragraphs. I pretty much gave up on this one after I read "petal stool" when the word should have been "pedestal". I loved another series by this author so grabbed this one but this book was such a disappointment.

Jacks and Chase are so darn HOT my Kindle was smoking! The sexual attraction was so palpable I could feel their ache for each other. The scenes were described so well that I felt like a voyeur.

Their story was so different but familiar. I loved that Chase was the billionaire who did not take other people’s advice, especially not his dad and brother. The fact that he was so attracted to Jacks despite her outer appearance really did it for me. Don’t get me wrong, Jacks was beautiful, but most men in his position would not seriously date a woman with face piercings and loads of tattoos.

The storyline was crazy and I am so happy that I didn’t figure out who the villain was. I was wrong in my assessment. I had part of it right, but not the main part.

This story kept me panting for more. Keta spun an intricate thriller that amazed and entertained. I am thankful for her gift.

Seeds of Love

Pick up this book and enjoy KK'S interpretations and machinations of modern love in the here and now...Jax is a free spirited beautiful sista and Chase is young handsome billionaire sitting at the top of the world...everything and everyone at his beck and call...women dropping at his feet...nipping at his soul..wanting his wealth...his prestigious standing....money..money...money....then he set his eyes on a beautiful tattooed pierced chocolate beauty...with her no nonsense style..brains and fierce aura...no time for dating or relationships...in fact she is dating a girl....hmmmm....but Chase is not a spineless rich boy....no....he's equally fierce and determined to make her see that's she is his Nirvana...

Wow, Some Crazy Sh*t

I loved this story, even despite my initial dislike of Jax's character. I didn't understand and appreciate the strength of her character and why she was so hard. I did love Chase and, I guess because he saw something in Jax I was missing, I really read with a more open mind.
I'm glad I did, because I really grew to love Jax.
All of the craziness that was trying to keep them apart was evil at another level. I had my ideas as to who was behind all the subterfuge and I was partially correct. But there was a surprise I was not expecting.
Ms
Ms Kendric, once again, did an excellent job in writing, building the characters, filling in the back stories, built on the intrigue and suspense and of course lots of great sex. Thoroughly enjoyed this!

Woooowwww!!!!!!

Hoooottt! 🔥 Loved the characters and their story. Rich or poor, sexual abuse hits too many in this country. I love that Chase loved Jax as she was, however her unresolved conflict and how she handled it was very unhealthy and toxic for any relationship! Jax feels honest in how she responds, reacts and also lives for someone that has lived through her experiences, but she is needing help. Love the descriptive way you write like a few of my faves in this biz. My first of your books, but not by any means my last. I would LOVE to see more from these characters looking at their journey with therapy and how their lives pan out...without giving away too much😉. Great book!

Chasing After Love

Wow! This story truly took me on a journey with Chase and Jax! I love how their mutual, instant attraction grew ... gradually with Chase being persistent! He immediately recognized that there was
MORE than physical attraction. I was intrigued about how he and Jax were so connected that he could communicate with her by simply looking deeply into her eyes.

Shockers: The various and faces and layers of child pornography! We think to think primarily of dirty old geisers and perverted men only as the perpetrators ... but imagine your own mother as one of the monsters!! Also, the reasons for “Why” these sickos do what they do cannot be fathomed!!

Well done! This story was the bomb-diggidy from start to finish!! Thank You!!
