Two sisters in love with the same man -- one engaged to him and the other about to sabotage the wedding -- struggle to reconcile in this delicious novel from the bestselling author of The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Café .

The Harrington sisters have never gotten along. Sara is a Type-A, career-focused event planner, and her younger sister Mariel is the bohemian, semi-employed, and recently engaged. When Sara's mother lures her back to Connecticut under false pretenses, she is perturbed to discover Mariel waiting for her, eager to reconcile their relationship -- and get some help with the final arrangements before her big day. The two sisters haven't spoken since the night Sara realized something was going on between Mariel and Sara's boyfriend, Carter Pryce. And now Mariel is about to marry Carter, the man she stole from Sara, the man Sara still loves.

When Mariel asks Sara to stand in for a bridesmaid who has to cancel at the last minute, Sara realizes it's the perfect cover to unravel the nuptials and win Carter back. Sara begins to slowly sabotage Mariel's picture-perfect wedding, but when she crosses paths with David Cole, he challenges her self-image as the jilted second-fiddle to her spotlight-stealing sister. Will Sara realize what a bridesmaid-zilla she's become in time to fix the damage before Mariel's big day?

Funny, soulful, and as sweet as buttercream, The Wedding Thief is the perfect summer read.

I grew up in Darien, Connecticut and started writing stories when I was eight. Although I always loved to write, I never imagined I could make a living as a fiction writer, so in college I majored in journalism. After working in magazine publishing for a few years, I went back to school to become a lawyer. While working as an attorney, I enrolled in an evening fiction writing class at a nearby university in Connecticut. I wrote "on the side," at night and on weekends, and several of my short stories were published in literary magazines. Finally, I took the big leap and wrote my first novel, The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe, which was turned into a movie called The Irresistible Blueberry Farm for the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel. I live with my husband in Palm Beach, Florida and we have a daughter who is quite a writer herself.

I liked the premise of the book, but it didn't really deliver. The writing was just OK, and I didn't like a single character. Easy read, but it wasn't great.

Thanks to Little, Brown, and Company for an egalley in exchange for an honest review.

Imagine that the man you loved is now going to marry another woman? Now, picture it's the younger sister that has always wanted to be just like you! What would you be willing to do to make sure that the wedding never happens? Corporate event planner, Sara Harrington arrives in her hometown with a plan- to make her sister's wedding day a disaster. The Wedding Thief is a comedic contemporary family drama that had me turning the pages but lacked the deep belly laughs that I was craving. Maybe it was because the protagonist, Sara, and I are the same age? Or perhaps because I didn't grow up with a sister that I failed to understand why a 38-year-old woman would stoop to some of the antics that occur in this book. Then again, it's just a book and anything is possible.

On the other hand, there were glimmers of comedic hilarity when it came to the pastry thieves and an art sculpture that needs to be fixed by a high school art teacher. Also, I do like how there was a little redemption in the end and it did leave me feeling good. I would also like to mention that one of my favorite characters in the story was Sara and Mariel's mother.

It has been a while since I was last treated to a novel by Mary Simses, and I am pleased to say that The Wedding Thief was worth the wait! The story packed in a lot of drama and entertainment, making me turn the pages quickly. It felt like it was shorter than it actually was, as a result.

I really enjoyed this novel overall. It had a My Best Friend's Wedding feel. The dialogue and interactions were great and there was a nice level of humor to the story. I wasn't sure where it would go, but I liked where things ended up. The sibling rivalry felt genuine and I totally understood what Sara was going through as an older sister. (Although my sister and I never had the kind of problems that Sara and Mariel did.) The descriptions brought everything to life and I felt like I was right in the middle of the idyllic setting.

This was a sweet story that I would definitely recommend.

Movie casting suggestions:
Sara: Gillian Jacobs
Mariel: Amanda Seyfried
David: Zachary Levi
Carter: Channing Tatum
Camille: Jean Smart
Tate: Chad Michael Murray

I’m not gonna sit here and really get into the nitty gritty as to why this book was hot trash.

It was juvenile, virtually every plot line was cluttered and led nowhere and all the characters were unlikeable. All of them. It could’ve been this great revenge plot but it was all watered down too quickly and the randomness of the plot just flew away with reason and never returned.

So yeah, do yourself a favour: pass on this one.

This is a light, funny book. I got disgusted with Sara. Her sister, Mariel, stole her boyfriend, Carter and was planning to marry him. Sara intends to steal him back. She hadn't seen the two for quite some time. She was a wedding planner in Los Angeles, but moves to Chicago to be a planner for groups. She meets up with the two, Mom planned it, she wants everybody to get together, to be a big, happy family. When Carter puts his arm around Sara, she melts. I thought she would shove him away. One of Mariel's attendant broke her leg, Mariel wants her sister to take her place. Sara agrees, she is planning to ruin the wedding.

Sara talks to a man friend about what she her plans are to ruin her sister's beautiful wedding. How old are you says the friend. Thirty-eight. Isn't it time you started acting like a grown up? Mariel is thirty-five and needs people to help her get through life. Sara wants to be a wife and mother. But she is thirty-eight. Sara, Mariel and Carter are all to immature to get married.

I enjoyed the use of satire. Sara and friend, David, go to an empty house in a small town. The house is in an empty area. They break in to get a large, blue hand done by an artist to get fixed. The two take the hand. Sara finds a pie sitting on the table. Why not? She picks it up. The police are outside arresting the two. So many homes in the area have had baked goods stolen from their homes. The police are so glad the thieves are caught. They have made history. Their pictures are in all the newspapers, the baked goods bandits are caught. Sara had her hair done, changed her image. But the salon made her look just like her sister. Mariel was furious, people would think she was a thief of baked goods. David thought his picture in the news was funny. LoL.

Mom gets sick, goes to the hospital, high blood pressure. When she was in the hospital, Sara cleans out all Mom's pantry and refrigerator of food that is said to be not healthy and throws it out. Her sister is angry. Mom is not a child. She eats what she likes. The baked goods bandit was found. He stole baked goods because his wife wouldn't allow him to eat sweets.

Sara went to an art show, a show of modern art. People bid on a paper-mache giant blue hand, thousands of dollars, so many wanted this ugly hand.

This is not great literature, but it made me laugh so much. The ending is predictable. When I first started I thought two for the way Sara allowed Mariel and Carter to treat her. Then it all got to be fun so four.

This was hilarious AF in my many parts of the novel but also highly relatable and plausible. I loved this book and felt much empathy for Sarah even if she went off the rails a couple times, she reclaimed the good older sister title. Sarah plans to sabotage her younger sister, Muriel's wedding because the groom, Carter, is her ex -boyfriend she feels her sister stole from her. Sarah forms many plans but also meets other people along the way that help her and as well as also make her reconsider what she is doing. Her mother also sides with her younger sister throughout their lives and invites Sarah back under false conditions ultimately to reunite the two sisters but this starts out Sarah's revenge plan. If you want to know how the book ends, you'll have to read it. Does Sarah get her revenge? Or does she reconsider?

Definitely a re-read author and a favorite read. Highly recommended for a lighter summer read.

Thanks to NEtgalley, Mary Simses, and Little Brown & Company for an ARC in exchange for n honest review.

While I did enjoy parts of this book, overall most of the characters got on my nerves with how childish they were behaving. David and the mother are the only characters who acted like adults and had some sense. I did laugh out loud at the whole "food bandit" situation. That and the heart to heart advice David gave to Sara were the best parts of the book for me.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️👰🏼🙅‍♀️

My thoughts: 📘 I couldn't decide between Love on Deck and The Holiday Stand-In, so I picked this one up instead. I think it's fitting since the last book I read had a similar situation with the opposite storyline.
🔖Page 125 of 315 Chapter 11 ¡Viva la Revolución! - I have to run to Five Guys, I'm not happy about it. This book is funny but she's not petty and needs to direct some of her anger at this guy. Also who is her alternate LI because there are a lot of options?

This story started better than it ended. I couldn't believe the marriage for security and stability that was encouraged here. The thing I hate about this trope is there is never any accountability for the people who start the drama in the first place. So for me, it was fun until it wasn't, which I knew was coming from the first page but I read it anyway. I'm hoping I'll have better luck with The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe.

Recommend to others: Maybe. It was good just not amazing, depends on what you're looking for.

DEUTSCHE ERSTAUSGABE
Aus dem Amerikanischen von Carolin Müller
Originaltitel: The Wedding Thief
Originalverlag: Little, Brown & Co., New York 2020
Taschenbuch, Klappenbroschur, 400 Seiten, 12,5 x 18,7 cm
ISBN: 978-3-7341-0854-9

Ok, Mary Simses is HILARIOUS. How have I not read anything from this author before???

The Wedding Thief had me laughing out loud in multiple places and will do the same for you, I guarantee it. Although I found Sara to be incredibly impulsive and selfish at times, I also found her to be relatable. She felt like my best friend rather than just a character I was reading about.

I thoroughly enjoyed all of the little side stories and adventures and while, at first, I thought they were a bit distracting and unnecessary, I later grew to love them. This novel is rom-com movie worthy!

The snide remarks between sisters, little quips and jokes, and deeper moments discussing family and love, truly build this novel into the joy that it was to read. I am thankful for the escape it provided during this stressful time.

There's also a recipe in the back for orange chocolate chunk cookies and you already know I gasped when I saw it! Excuse me while I go grab my apron...

Thank you to Book Trib and Mary Simses for this gifted copy and nugget of comic relief!

The Wedding Thief is an ideal summer read, especially during these bizarre C-19 times. The book asks a few questions and then advocates answers, done amusingly, and entertainingly. The reader is asked if sisters who are strikingly different can become close and sister-like again after experiencing a major blow out during the wedding of the youngest sister. There are funny scenes and comedic antics, as well as discussion of what it means to be part of a family. Add some universally cute romance and you will conclude as I that the Wedding Thief is a fun read that can be enjoyed by all.

I give this a 3 rounded up to 4 stars - an enjoyable read with some plot points that were a bit of a stretch. It explores the relationships between mother and daughters and among sisters. I don't have a sister so I can't really relate to having one compete with me our whole lives and then steal the love of my life - ouch. However, it would make sense that the main character completely sabotage her sister's wedding. It also dabbles in stages of grief for the family when the beloved father passed away. Typical of Simses' books, there is a yummy recipe on the back page.

Torn between one and two stars, I had to reconcile that I did read the whole book, and it kept my attention, with the fact that it was completely improbable and so lightweight as to almost fall beneath a beach-read designation. Frivolous. That’s my best description. The protagonist loses her likeability so often with bonehead moves (highly unlikely), in her efforts to get back at the sister who stole her beau. There were extraneous characters who added nothing to the story and a lot of emotional handwringing about feelings that didn’t seem too genuine. And while there is some learning, aka redemption in the end, it’s really just a feathery rom-com with so little endurance that it will make it only until I’ve read something else.

When Sara’s mother calls her back home because she’s said she’s terribly ill- she finds moms Broadways acting skills are fabulous. Mom is just fine, but her backstabbing sister, Mariel, is getting married to her ex-boyfriend, Carter in just two weeks.
Can Sara bear to watch the two go down the aisle after they’ve betrayed her or is this her chance to wreck their wedding after all?
A funny, yet heartwarming story about family and the ties that bond.

Thoroughly enjoyable summer read. The pacing was excellent, and kept me turning the pages - even when the main character, Sara, was behaving like a brat. I had to see how she would redeem herself. It’s been years since I was that obsessive over a man who got away, but I could sympathize. There was humor too, and a nice small-town vibe made an attractive background to the story. Perfect beach read…
