One by one, they will pay for the past…
DS Jack Mackinnon’s career is in serious trouble. Still in the Detective Chief Inspector’s bad books and excluded from the Major Investigation team, Mackinnon is assigned the case nobody wants. As Mackinnon investigates, he discovers a horrifying link to a crime committed a decade ago.
This is the third book in the DS Jack MacKinnon series by DS Butler and the more I read of this series the more I enjoy it

This is a good police procedural series with characters that are growing on me. In this book Jack is hunting down suspected contaminated drugs that are killing people. Is it by accident or is this a deadly revenge.
Deadly revenge is the second book in the series of DS Mackinnon, it can be read as a stand alone, so don't worry if you haven't read the 1st one. Deadly Revenge is much darker & grittier than Deadly Motive. D S Butler has really found her niche here, with her thrilling style of writing. DS Mackinnon is on the case of suspected contamination of drugs., as the story unfolds it reveals hidden secrets & plots of revenge, it grips you with a sense of realism & and fear of the dreadful horrors that happen to the victims. As each chapter unfolds it brings you deeper & deeper behind the scenes of the drug dealing world with lots of twist, without the need of shocking violence. Despite the topic & lifestyles you feel sympathy for non stereotypical characters you would normally look down on. This book certainly packs a powerful punch and Butler gives Martina Cole (without the swearing) a run for her money in this terrific gritty crime novel.
Given this series is available through Kindle Unlimited, I figured I'd keep giving it a shot, even though the first two books were a little meh. The characters were interesting and likable, and I felt the plots would grow more engaging. I was correct—in this book Butler is not afraid to get a little gritty, and she gives voice to populations often overlooked. It's worth getting to this point and I hope the series continues to get better.
Loved it! I started this series to save myself going through some of my favourite books and series so quickly…but now this has become a firm favourite! Love the writing style and also how different the story lines are and how much they vary. Can’t wait for the next one!
I came across D.S. Taylor’s books by chance and I’m really glad I did. She writes a really good story which always engages the reader. There were a number of themes running through this book - split families, step father/ step children relationships, addiction, image, work place jealousy, police corruption and strained relationships to name but a few. However, what I find really impressive is the amount of research that D.S Taylor carries out in each of her novels. It’s accurate, clearly explained and seamlessly woven into the plot. Jack McKinnon is our lead character and he is totally believable and will always take a risk in reaching the truth and justice, even it means incurring the wrath of his superiors. I’m currently reading book four of this series and, although a completely different theme, I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
I listened to the audiobook version of this title. I’m reading these titles out of sequence, because 2 and 3 were part of the Audible Plus Catalogue which were due to expire.
Notwithstanding that, I’m very engrossed in these stories. So much so that, describing the plot is not easy - I couldn’t do so without giving away too many spoilers!
An interesting, intricate and engrossing tale. Great character development with equally annoying and engaging characters. It’s police procedural, but I can’t think of any other author style to compare this to. It makes it all the more compelling.
As always D.S. Butler’s novels are a good and enjoyable read.
I always enjoy D.S Butler’s novels. I read the Karen Hart series and this is the 3rd Jack MacKinnon story I have read. The plot in this one is very good and the answer does not come till near the end. Well worth a read. Highly recommended.
Finished this book in 1 day...it was that good! Jack Mackinnon is placed in a super precarious position but still managed to pull through for his victims and his family. Definitely recommend this series! D.S Butler you have totally invaded my life with your amazing writing. For this I thank you 😊
Enjoyed the story and characters so much more. Although there are still a great number of characters, this book appeared to flow better until the reveal. Great, ready for the next one. 🚓
As usual couldn't put the book down until finished. If you enjoy detective stories and easy to read them this series is definitely for you. I now look forward to reading the next one in the series.
The Jack MacKinnon books are so down to earth, good to read. The characters are ordinary people just muddling through life with the plots interwoven which makes them hard to put down. Thank you
Book three and once again Jack is finding things not so easy at the station.Another great adventure for MacKinnon but like all his cases they don't run smoothly.
I enjoyed this read as I did it’s predecessors ... a believable plot made more fascinating by the alternative chapters for each part of the story ... some as history others in the current. Well written.
This book is fantastic & keeps you gripped all the way through! Managed to read it in about a days loving this series & I think all of the authors books read so far have been brilliant & gripping. The characters are well thought through.
Excellent reading. I’m really getting into DS Jack Mackinnon’s character now. I really enjoyed this latest book and I am already reading the next. Hoping that Father Christmas will send me the rest in the series!
I wasn't fussed on the last one, but this NO 3 book changed my mind and it was a brilliant read!! So I'm looking forward to reading book 4. Hope I'll become a MacKinnon Fan.🤗
I love reading Her books but this one felt like it was rushed with too much unnecessary content not related to the main story. Hopefully the next one in the series will be better
I'm actually not sure why Mackinnon continues the relationship with Chloe, though there is some growth in their strained family life. So far in this series, I much prefer reading about the actual detective work rather than the problems at home. Maybe the next one will be better.
Another great book which I couldn't put down until I finished it. I sincerely hope this writer will be writing some more books which I will look out for.
