“That's one small step for man, One giant leap for mankind.” ~ Neil Armstrong

The Moon Landings was one of, if not the, greatest achievement of the 20th century, and perhaps the most memorable moment in all of human history. When We Walked on the Moon: tells the story of the Apollo Missions, From the first moon landing in Apollo 11 in 1969 to the very last mission in Apollo 17, each chapter tells the story of a different mission.

There are 11 short chapters each covering a separate Apollo mission. It starts with the space race between the USA and USSR and the early unmanned missions. It then covers each of the Apollo missions separately (From Apollo 11 to Apollo 17). The book concludes with brief biographies of each of the astronauts and timeline of the entire Apollo mission plus a helpful Glossary section.

Moon Mission

Each chapter of the book is highly informative and packed with numerous facts, quotes, lesser-known humorous details, and some amazing illustrations. All the illustrations in this book are excellent which have made the book memorable.

The best thing about this book is that it covers every Apollo mission equally, which gives us a chance to view the entire Apollo mission in its entirety and the unusual moments from each of the missions. The Apollo 11 mission is well known but we get a chance to learn more about the Apollo 12 or the ill-fated Apollo 13 or the last mission of Apollo 17. It’s fun to learn some amazing facts about some of the lesser talked about missions and the astronauts as well.

July 20, 2019, marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon and When We Walked on the Moon is a perfect book for both kids and adults to learn more about the moon missions. Overall, it’s a beautifully illustrated book, full of facts and anyone interested in space and the moon missions will enjoy it.

When We Walked on the Moon is a superb, accessible introduction to the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union, the moon landings and a concise history of space exploration. July 20, 2019, marks the 50th anniversary of the first humans landing on the Moon on July 20, 1969, as part of NASA's Apollo 11 lunar mission, and many books are being published on the subject, but this is the best I've come across tailored to youngsters. It's beautifully illustrated and each picture compliments the text perfectly.

There are 11 short chapters including Getting to the Moon, The Eagle Has Landed, The Last Men on the Moon and a chapter all about The Astronauts involved in each Lunar Mission. It also covers all of the Apollo missions (11-17). Naturally, the text has some trickier words that youngsters may not have come across previously, however, there is a helpful Glossary section at the very back of the book and all other terminology is explained in layman's terms within the text.

Everything is explained clearly to aid understanding, and I particularly liked that it was interspersed with pull quotes made by some of the astronauts who took part in the missions as I felt this added an emotional side to it all which I welcomed. So if you are looking for a book full of factual information and tidbits of intriguing data then this is a great choice. This should be in every school, library and in the homes of those fascinated, as I am, by the subject of space travel. Many thanks to Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions for an ARC.

A fabulous book for kids and adults on the history of moon missions, perfect for the upcoming 50th anniversary next month of man’s first walk on the lunar surface.

I remember it well as millions —including our whole neighborhood — gathered in front of mostly black and white TV sets to watch Neil Armstrong take “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” I later shared an elevator with the astronaut at the University of Cincinnati where he was teaching engineering. I took a surreptitious peek at his feet (he was notoriously shy) and wondered what it like for him to stand in that historic place.

WHEN WE WALKED ON THE MOON tells the reader that and much more, sharing details of the first mission to the last, including the incredible rescue of Apollo 13. There are separate chapters on each mission, with terrific illustrations, astronaut bios, engaging quotes, quirky stories, plus a timeline and glossary of terms at the back ... a lot of goodness packed into just 80 pages! Highly recommended!

Pub Date 04 Jun 2019.

Another of those books where the illustrations and the text (quantity and level of information) don’t match each other. The illustrations are very childish but the info and the amount of text is certainly some years older than that. I would have put less text and more concise info or keep the information as they are but add real good quality picture and not just illustration... Anyway maybe this is just me, my preference and all, but this book didn’t please me!

This was a good kid book about NASA, astronauts, and our trips to the moon and space in general. It's nice and simple for the kiddos to keep them interested and excited about it. It doesn't get too technical. I really enjoyed it!

This is a bit of an odd picture book. On one hand, it has very simple illustrations of the men on the moon.

But then on the other hand, the text is at a higher level than the pictures.

Since this all happened in my childhood, I remember bits of this, so it is a bit of a nostalgic trip, with the moon buggy and such. But whether children today would enjoy reading this, is hard to say. It is good that the book has been written.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

When we walked on the moon is a wonderfully informative book jam packed with so much information!
There is a lot I didn't know about and think children we be fascinated by it all.

The bio on the astronauts and the Apollo mission sections are brilliant, as are the quotes included.
This is perfect for space fanatics and perfect for school projects too.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a really beautifully illustrated, interesting book that tells the stories of the astronauts on the Apollo missions. Each chapter tells of a different mission, with lots of sweet little tidbits that the astronauts passed on, along with the sometimes scary and sobering times. The artwork really added to it for me, along with the layout. This is a fairly long book best suited for older elementary readers. It might get long for a read-aloud for a child who isn't particularly interested in space missions, but would make a great book to read alone. Adults are likely to find lots of interesting new information, too.

My rating system:

1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

When We Walked on the Moon by David Long is now one of my favorite children's books! It was informative to both children and adults - I learned so many things I had never heard before, the illustrations are beautiful, and it was written in a way that made it easy to understand. I didn't know I was this interested in space and the moon missions until I read this book. I will definitely be putting this book on my shelf and can't wait to share it with others.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in return for an honest review.

A very good book concerning the Apollo Project, quickly taking us to the launchpad of the first successful Saturn 5 launches and Neil and Buzz's trip to the moon. It might need a quick look before final publication, as my proof says the spacesuits were 140kg each, or "nearly as much as the astronauts themselves" – yeah, all three of them perhaps; 140kg is 22 stone and change. I think it could have also afforded a spread for the physics of launch – thrust, escape velocity and suchlike. But in giving each mission equal time we see the real story of the project, from the larks and jokes of Apollo 12 to the near-tragedy of 13. Trivia fans will be surprised by the budget of the moon buggies, and indeed the whole endeavour, but I think all told the text and the level it's pitched at will go down very well with school librarians and their clients. A round-up of all the Apollo astronauts at the end, and a poignant mention of what might eventually happen next, close a very successful volume. A strong four stars.

Kiddo went through an intense space phase last year and has since moved out of it but really enjoyed listening to this book. It helped that they were already familiar with the Apollo 13 disaster, so even though it was written rather dramatically / suspensefully they were able to maintain calm at bedtime while listening.

After reading this and the Charles Darwin book by the same author, we will definitely be seeking out more because both were excellent.

On the 20th July 1969 Neil Armstrong would do something that no human had done previously, he would step foot onto the Moon. This superbly illustrated read details the Apollo missions and is a wonderful account of what thousands of brilliant minds were able to achieve through perseverance, collaboration and hard-work.

Told across ten chapters, the story of the seven different Apollo missions unfold and feature the men, the magical moments and what was learnt each time space and the Moon were explored. Discover the great risks that those who went into space faced, the incredible rewards for taking those risks and uncover what happened when things went wrong.

Get a fascinating insight into what the astronauts felt the first time they stepped onto the Moon and what it was like to look back at Earth. All the training in the world couldn’t prepare the astronauts for what they would experience when they were on the Moon and many were overcome with emotions ranging from tears to giggles - with one crew getting a little too excited and needing to be ‘told off’ by mission control!

Readers will be fascinated to learn about some of the more unusual things that have been taken into space, including one that that was secretly snook on board by a mischievous spaceman. It wasn’t all work on the Moon and several astronauts found time to do some relaxing and enjoy a bit of sport…anyone for golf or a spot of lunar go-karting?

Brief biographies of the astronauts at the back of the book make for an informative read and it is interesting to learn about the backgrounds of the astronauts and what they did pre and post their missions to the moon. A delightful timeline details the history of space exploration from April 1961 through to 2012 and a brief glossary of key words is a nice addition.

Filled with facts, and quotes and stories from the people that were there, this is a beautifully presented book that is produced on quality paper with pages that will stand up to endless hours of exploration.

Recommended for 8+.

When We Walked on the Moon: Discover the Dangers, Disasters, and Triumphs of Every Moon Mission was written by David Long and illustrated by Sam Kalda. The book tells the story of the Apollo Missions, when incredible intelligence, engineering and bravery allowed humans to stand on the surface of something other than Earth for the very first time. From the 1969 first moon landing to the amazing rescue of Apollo 13, each chapter tells the story of a different mission. Humorous details bring the astronauts to life: discover how the astronauts of Apollo 12 were so over-excited when they stepped onto the Moon that Mission Control had to tell them to quieten down, and Shepard (Apollo 14) somehow managed to smuggle a golf club onto his spacecraft!

When We Walked on the Moon is a very informative and well balanced read. I like that the facts are straight forward but given with small humorous and lesser known details that will make every reader smile. The combination of well written and accessible text with illustrations that offer up additional details and make some of the fact more clear is nearly perfect. I found the art style to be very nice, and think that they will help keep the interest of readers that need to break up the text a little. I really enjoyed having all of the missions described in one book, giving a clearer view of the progression of the missions and the unusual moments from each. I learned many things that I did not know, and I think many other readers (of all ages) will find that they learn a great deal from this book as well. I also appreciated the glossary, which might make reading the text even more accessible to some readers.

When We Walked on the Moon is a great book for every readers that has ever dreamt of becoming an astronaut, or that has simply looked at the sky and wanted to know more about what goes into getting there.

This wonderfully illustrated book celebrates the Apollo manned missions to the moon. Young readers investigate such topics as Getting to the Moon, We Have Liftoff, The Eagle Has Landed, This Spectacular, Unreal World, Disaster, Science on the Moon, Driving on the Moon, Blinding, Beautiful Black, Last Men on the Moon, and A Precious Legacy.

Supporting each section, a glossary and a timeline are also included as are brief biographies of each of the Apollo astronauts.

Young readers, ages eight through ten [grades three through five] are the targeted audience for this book; they are sure to enjoy discovering the facts about each thrilling mission. Here, in the pages of this book, young readers can share in the awe and wonder each of the twelve men who stood on the moon surely felt.

In a book filled with so many facts and so much information, it seems strange to find a rather significant inaccuracy. At the beginning of the book, in a section discussing the Saturn V rocket we read, “Each rocket had to carry three astronauts and enough fuel to fly the 238,500 miles to the moon, and all the way back.” Although the distance quoted is a correct approximate between Earth and Moon, the Saturn V rocket launches the astronauts, the equipment, the lunar lander, and the command module into Earth orbit. The stages of the Saturn V rocket separate and fall away as their fuel is used up; the Saturn V rocket does not travel to the moon nor does it return the astronauts to Earth.

Nevertheless, the book is recommended for young readers interested in science and space travel as well as for those interested in learning about astronauts and the lunar missions many of us remember so well.

Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions for a copy of When We Walked on the Moon by David Long. What an exciting and fun book to read on the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11! This book is full of information and facts about the space missions Apollo 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. Some of the facts I learned are: 400,000 people worked on the Apollo missions, Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 2069, even at 20,000 mph it took almost three days to get to the moon, and “inside the space suit helmets is a small piece of rough material which could be used to scratch an itchy nose…”

This book has great graphics including a labelled diagram of the parts of the Saturn V Rocket. The book ends with a short bio of each of the astronauts on each mission. And then there is a glossary of some of the terms used and a timeline illustrated with the mission patches of the Apollo missions.

This is a great book for anyone interested in space travel, or space history, kids and adults. As the message on the cover says, “discover the dangers, disasters, and triumphs of every moon mission.”

"He was stunned by how beautiful the earth looked from so far away."

I love the format of this book...a beautiful picture book and chapter book rolled into one! The pictures are engaging and there is just enough text to stimulate interest and keep the reader moving forward without getting bogged down.

When We Walked on the Moon invites the reader to journey through the origins of space travel and ponder the ingenuity it required to make it to the moon. I love all the facts and statistics that children can grasp and be amazed by!

Children's non-fiction is my jam and I especially love anything to do with science! I would recommend this book for classroom use and to add to a Space unit study. I will use it with my own children during our studies of space during the school year. This book would also make an excellent "read alone" for upper elementary students.

I am thankful to the publisher and NetGalley for a digital copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.

'When We Walked on the Moon: Discover the dangers, disasters, and triumphs of every moon mission' by David Long with illustrations by Sam Kalda is a book for young readers that talks about the space race, then every Apollo mission afterward.

Starting with a few pages about the space race, the book quickly gets in to the amazing Apollo missions. Mission details, who the astronauts were, and what they thought are all highlights. The dangers and problems are also there. So are the sentimental things, like Charlie Duke leaving a photo of his family on the moon for future explorers to find.

I recently read a similar book for young readers, but this book really brought out the wonder of discovery, and finishes with a chapter on the legacy as well as what is next. The illustrations are nice and the book ends with bios of all the astronauts featured.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

I think I would have liked this book more a year ago with the anniversary and all of the hype. This year I need a break from it, but I had to read this book anyway.

I learned a few new things, like there were five mice that went to space once. Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, and Phooey. They went so they could be studied to see the effect of space travel. That was it. They were mentioned, but we never find out the results. The book also mentions what some of the rocks looked like and how they have various colors. Gray, Black, Green, Red, Orange…

I also was reminded of another burning question. Remember that 3rd person from Apollo 11? You have Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, but nobody remembers the other guy. Michael Collins was his name and he never got to walk on the moon. The end of the book covers multiple Apollo missions. It looks like the Command Module Pilot never gets to walk the moon (which is what Collins was). How do they stand it?! You are right there. The other guys should let you have at least a quick 10 steps. It only seems fair after all of that hard work to get there.

"When We Walked on the Moon" is excellent non-fiction about the Apollo missions written in an intelligent kid-friendly style. My boys (8 and 11) and I really enjoyed reading this together. I have to give 5 stars to non-fiction that holds the kids interests, because it can be a tough genre for youngsters. I'm a bit of and illustration snob, but I found the stylized art in this book surprisingly compelling in it's simplicity. The artist captured the spirit of the text while offering a landing zone for imagination. My 8-year-old in particular called out things in the images, and we often found ourselves referring to the different parts of Saturn 5 labeled in the first chapter. We also appreciated the timeline and astronaut bios at the end.

We followed this non-fiction up with the breathtakingly illustrated historical fiction "Armstrong: The Adventurous Journey of a Mouse to the Moon" by Torben Kuhlmann.

Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon, this book provides an engaging look at the U.S. Apollo missions. Without maing it sound like ancient history, Long captures the excitement and wonder of man's exploration of space. Direct quotes from the astronauts themselves go beyond the most famous ones we are familiar with and capture the humanity of these heroic figures. Kids will relate to the exuberance and down-to-earth humor of the astronauts reveling in this unique experience. I also particularly enjoyed the little (and new to me) details and insights, Long is able to provide. The clean, striking illustrations add a wonderful dimension to the text. Will definitely include in my elementary library.

I liked this book all right - I learned a few interesting tidbits which I didn't know before. The artwork was good, and fun. Except for the following, I think it'd be a great book for kids to read about the moon missions and landings. But I was very disappointed to only see white people in the big art spread of the work done to save the Apollo 13 astronauts, given that we know there were black computers working at NASA. I also think a discussion about how the astronauts were chosen and WHY they were all men, and white, would be good so children don't assume upon reading that white men were just intrinsically better at being astronauts. These things matter.

I really enjoyed this book- it's aimed at kids, but I think adults will enjoy it too! I learned things I don't remember hearing before, and the book explained everything clearly in a conversational tone that made reading it more enjoyable. The artwork is gorgeous, and compliments the text nicely. At the end of the book, there are group portraits of the flight crews for the Apollo 11 through 17 missions with a brief bio of each astronaut, and a timeline of the missions and events leading to and following the missions. An awesome book, highly recommended!

I really enjoyed reading this, and learned quite a lot! As someone who is a space nerd and grew up loving to learn about the Apollo projects and the Space Shuttle projects, it was exciting to learn more about our history of landing on the moon and the experience on all sides of it too. This book would be great for independent reading, and for a longer term analysis since it's broken into chronological chapters. The art and information is presented in a very accessible and understandable language too.

A must read for the aspiring astronaut. Who has not dreamed of going to the moon. I think every child has. This book is a good book on the history of the moon walk and Neil Armstrong's famous “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” statement. It goes into the Apollo Missions and the race againest the US againest the Soviet Union to get into space first. In addition you have bios, fun stories and timelines. It does show the good and some of the sad parts of space exploration. This is a great book for homeschool or regular school science middle school.

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful book about the Apollo moon missions. It not only has great illustrations but has organized and presented the information in an excellent way. I learned so much I didn't know about these remarkable missions to the moon as well as reading some of the personal reflections and feelings of the astronauts. The book's reading level is geared toward "older" elementary-aged kids.
