The ever-intrepid Richard Halliburton gets enlisted to deliver a package to Japan in a joint mission with British and U.S. intelligence agencies. However, when his plans for a smooth deliver go south, Halliburton finds himself battling a secret society of samurai warriors, fending off Japan’s most dangerous predator, and trying to survive the bitter temperatures of Mt. Fuji—all while tracking down one of Japan’s most notorious spies.
If you love the Indiana Jones franchise, Clive Cussler, or Dan Brown, you’re sure to enjoy this new archeological thriller series from award-winning author Garrett Drake.

Winter 1922, Russia, Japan, US harbor ~ After successfully completing a number of missions for the department of US Army Intelligence in Africa and Asia, journalist and world adventurer Richard Halliburton is beginning to feel homesick and wants to return home to his family in Tennessee. It is at this juncture that Richard is again approached by his contact with Army Intelligence. Before returning to the US, Army Intelligence wants Halliburton to again act as a courier traveling from Russia to Japan by carrying a diplomatic mail pouch and a top secret Japanese cipher. Halliburton’s job would be to get both packages to the US embassy in Japan safely. Richard’s longterm dream is traveling the world and sharing his adventures through books, novels and speaking engagements. Richard’s Intelligence contact agrees to connect Richard with certain publishers and agents if he completes this last mission successfully in a timely fashion.
Richard’s mission has him sailing from Russia to Japan during the coldest months of winter, hanging on the outside of a train, scaling the sides of Mt Fuji - facing bitter winds, sudden storms, and adversaries while never being quite sure who is potential friend or foe.
What we Liked and Who might enjoy ~ 1) The Richard Halliburton series reminds me of the Saturday Adventure movies I enjoyed in my youth - Zorro, King Solomon’s Mines, Scarlet Pimpernel and others of the kind - where an individual is on a specific quest against danger with adversaries known and unknown. 2) The tone for TQFTFC is light; it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I believe this tale is best enjoyed when the reader simply suspends disbelief and goes on the ride. 3) The voice work by John Pirhalla captures the character of Richard Halliburton wonderfully and the adventuresome mood of the novel. Well done! 4) Each book in the series can be “read” in any order and as standalone adventures. We have completed two, books 2 and 4. I am looking forward to obtaining the others soon.
READER CAUTIONS ~ IMO appropriate for YA readers who enjoy adventure or quest related novels. PROFANITY - Yes. Very rarely (once?) VIOLENCE - G/PG. Not graphic. Mostly a swashbuckling type adventure. SEXUAL SITUATIONS - None.
The spy, Richard Halliburton, once again gets into trouble trying to salvage a cipher from the Japanese government. He runs into other spies, samurais, Japanese police, undercover agents and more as he runs, is pursued and pushes bad girls and guys.
I have enjoyed all Four of the books in this series. There is a lot of action and suspense in some of the most exotic areas of the world. Great characters and interesting storyline!
