In this series debut for fans of Jenn McKinlay, baker Teddie St. John spends her time away from the oven writing murder mysteries. But is she herself a murderer?

Everyone in Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin, knows Teddie St. John. Tall, curly-haired Teddie is a superb baker, a bohemian bon vivant, and a mystery writer. Teddie is walking her American Eskimo dog, Gracie, when her four-legged friend finds Teddie's missing silk scarf. Only problem: the scarf is tied tightly around the neck of a beautiful blond woman, the fiancée of a touring British author.

Before you can say "Wisconsin kringle," Teddie becomes a murder suspect. Everyone in town knows all too well that the distinctive scarf was hers. But there are more layers to this case than there would have been on poor Kristi's wedding cake. Tavish Bentley should be bereaved after his sweetheart's strangling. Instead, the dashing Brit takes a shine to Teddie's witty wisecracks and to-die-for cookies, and soon he's mooning over her instead of mourning his bride. That is, when he's not dodging the attentions of Annabelle, an obsessive fan who's taken to stalking him.

And when a second murder shocks the community, the plot thickens to the consistency of fondant as Teddie stands accused of not one, but two, murders. With the help of her friends Sharon and Char, can Teddie clear her name and deliver a killer's just desserts?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I had planned to read and review this book closer to the release date but I was suffering from chemo side effects and preparing for surgery at that time. Now I have just a few radiation treatments left and am in a much better place to read this book that features a breast cancer survivor protagonist.

Teddie St. John loves to bake and she’s good at it. She also loves to write mysteries and she excels at that too. A breast cancer survivor she has plotted her life around those two things, plus her friends, her mom, and her American Eskimo dog, Gracie. She is excited to attend a book signing at her BFF Char’s bookstore. The author, Tavish Bentley, is a famous British suspense writer who ended up in Lake Potawatomi when his event in Milwaukee was canceled. Sadly just as the event is getting started Teddie suffers one of those dreaded side effects brought on by cancer treatments and ends up leaving the book signing early.

Later while out walking Gracie she makes a gruesome discovery. Behind her friend’s bookstore, she finds the famous author’s fiance dead with a significant clue that points directly at Teddie as the murderer. Thankfully she is friends with the sheriff and he knows she didn’t kill anybody. The author does have a fan who is obsessed with him, and Teddie’s money is on her as the killer but then a second body is found and that really twists things up. Teddie enlists the help of her besties to help her find the real killer and serve them up on a silver platter.

I love Teddie St. John! It is always nice when you have something in common with the lead character in a cozy but this time it isn’t just a craft or an occupation, it is something neither would have chosen for ourselves. Surviving cancer is a battle and her road was much tougher than mine. I know the author drew from her own experiences and that makes the story even more special. Ms. Walker also surrounded Teddie with excellent friends, an overbearing mother, and a lovable pup. These characters all drew me in right away.

Setting the story in my home state, also the author’s, grabbed my attention too. The dialogue rang true, the descriptions of the people and places was like looking out my back door, and OMG the food/Kringles mentions brought me actual joy.

The mystery was top-notch, with actually two to solve. Teddie was an interesting sleuth to follow. If you are looking for quirky, somewhat creepy characters look no further than the people that land on Teddie’s suspect list. She takes some risks but none of the “too stupid to live” kind that some amateur sleuths do. I did hone in on a few things before she did but was very entertained by the way things played out.

The story had a great flow with one scene near the beginning of the book that had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. There is also the start of a romance for Teddie. At first, I thought it was happening too quickly but who am I to judge. Teddie has been through a lot and deserves all the happiness she can get.

Murder Most Sweet is a terrific cozy mystery that has set this series off to a fine start. My appetite has been seriously whet, I can hardly wait for Deadly Delights that will be hitting shelves June 8, 2021.

Newest Assignement Details:

Where: Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin

Who: Teddie St. John

Upon arriving in Lake Potawatomi, I was briefly introduced to Teddie St. John-a Breast cancer survivor/warrior, author, and baker...then was immediately whisked to a book signing. A famous author was signing books at Teddie’s best friend Char’s bookstore. Not long into the signing Teddie whispered she needed to run to the ladies' room. Well soon after that Teddie is whisking me out the door with a fashion emergency and a big-time frustration that her scarf was stolen while she was in the stall. Who would do that?? Soon after Teddie stumbles onto a dead body...the body of the book signing authors ex-fiancée...and what’s worse than finding a dead body??...finding the dead body with your scarf wrapped around their neck used to strangle them!! We must work fast to prove Teddies' innocence and find the real killer….

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed the first book in this series! I loved the main character. She was strong, independent, and didn’t let anybody push her around (including her mother). I also liked the secondary characters, and the humor sprinkled in throughout the book...although I wish her mom would give her a break and respect her wishes when it comes to her own damn breasts. The writing was fast-paced, and kept me intrigued…. although the mystery was fairly easy to figure out.

I will be anxiously awaiting to see what happens next, but in the meantime, I will be trying one of the several recipes included in this book. I think I will start with the lemon sugar cookies.

After surviving breast cancer five years ago, Teddie St. John starting writing culinary cozies, combining her love and baking and mysteries. She’s moderately successful, and looking forward to meeting the highly successful Tavish Bentley when he comes to her small Wisconsin town for a book signing. However, the event ends early when Teddie finds Tavish’s fiancée dead in the ally next to the bookstore. The murder weapon was one of Teddie’s scarfs. Teddie needs to clear her name, but can she do it?

Since I love both culinary and booked themed cozies, I was looking forward to digging into this debut. Unfortunately, I found the mystery to be weak. It started well, but it wasn’t strong enough overall. On the other hand, Teddie does lead a cast of fun characters that I enjoyed meeting. I did find Teddie’s mother a bit much, but hopefully that relationship will grow as the series goes on. The suspects are just as strong and memorable as the main characters. As a man, I was a bit uncomfortable with some of the talk about Teddie’s breast cancer, but I am sure most people who pick up the book will be fine with that. If the book leaves you craving some Wisconsin sweets, you’ll be thrilled to find the six recipes at the back of the book. Hopefully, the mysteries will grow as the series progresses.

Teddie might be the most charming debut sleuth of the year. Smart, wickedly funny, and with a bold fashion sense, she’s the perfect guide through small town Wisconsin. Her attitude is routinely upbeat—even when facing accusations of murder—and it’s refreshing to find a character approaching the mystery she’s been embroiled in such a straightforward manner. Sure, she has her doubts, but it’s a testament to author Laura Jensen Walker’s ability to craft realistic characters that these never overwhelm the broader flow of the action. There’s hope in these pages. More pressingly, there’s a killer out there, and there’s never any doubt that Teddie has the pluck and determination to crack the case.

And what a case it is. Teddie, after her scarf is discovered as the murder weapon, unfortunately becomes the first suspect in the case. From there, it’s a whirlwind of clues, misdirection, and some inventive investigating on Teddie’s part. After all, it should be no surprise that someone so invested in clothing knows how to whip up a costume or two.

While Walker has expertly worked in enough tension to give this cozy some edge, it’s her humor that shines through. Teddie has an eclectic group of pals who help her along—or, in the case of a certain sheriff, hinder her—while dishing out jokes and positive energy. They’re an easy group to fall in love with as they banter, and several moments between them feel genuine. They’re usually chatting over one of Teddie’s regional delicacies, like fattigman bakkels, which Walker has no problem describing in delicious detail. It would be easy—though not recommended—to drool on these pages. Fortunately, she’s also included several tried and true recipes.

Baked goods galore. A clever mystery. Tons of fun. Murder Most Sweet is a stunning debut to a hopefully very long series.

Note: I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I really wanted to love this but there were so many cozy mystery cliches - writer, best friend in law enforcement, baking, overbearing mom, quirky friends - it was so bogged down trying to check all the boxes that the story suffered. And the constant references to her breasts, or lack thereof, started to get annoying, although I did like the mention of the knitted alternatives. There were some funny parts that I enjoyed but even they seemed overdone and slap sticky. I’ll try the next one, hoping most of these things are worked out.

Review:

The characters were well rounded and well developed. I enjoyed meeting Teddie, Char, Sharon and Brady. You can tell they are good friends and care a lot about each other. And Gracie, Teddie’s American Eskimo dog, added a lot to the story. We will have to wait and see what happens between Teddie and Tavish, a possible love interest for Teddie.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me right into the story early on. The mystery was well plotted, although I had an idea of the killer fairly early.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Murder Most Sweet is only my second Cozy Mystery and I'm really liking this genre. This book is actually better that my first since I didn't have to contend with a library ghost.

Set in a small town called Lake Potawatomi, WI, it is the perfect warm and comfortable setting for the story to take place. The protagonist is not only an accomplished writer, she is also an accomplished baker (hence the bookish baker mystery.) The protagonist has an Eskie (American Eskimo dog) and what a delight that is. You dog lovers will really enjoy the relational aspect between dog and human. It just adds to the storyline.

Murder Most Sweet has a great combination of light mystery and light romance. However, I thought there was an abruptness to uncovering the perpetrator. Maybe that was just me.

Overall, a good read. An added bonus -- real recipes you can use at the end of the book. I'll need to try some -- especially the Oatmeal Raisin cookie recipe.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received an e-ARC from NetGalley to review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and not affected by the giveaway.

Teddie St. John, a Norwegian-Danish-American, bibliophile, Anglophile, murder mystery writer, baker, dog mom and breast cancer survivor is enjoying life post-cancer even if chemotherapy did give her early menopause. It's a wicked hot flash that causes a lot of trouble for Ted! At a book signing for New York Times bestselling mystery writer Tavish Bentley, Ted hits it off with the English author but when a hot flash sends her to the bathroom to cool off, she has to cut the outing short. When another woman enters the restroom, Ted, embarrassed to be seen soaking wet and covered in paper towel blobs, retreats to a stall. While she's hiding out she overhears two women discussing getting Tavish back. One must be his fiance, Kristi, but who is the other? When Ted emerges, her turquoise scarf with whimsical pom-poms she left on the vanity is missing. When next she sees it, it is wrapped around Kristi's neck and Kristi is very much dead. Even though the sheriff is Ted's longtime pal Brady, he has to play by the book and Ted becomes a suspect. Everyone knows she's not a killer but what about Tavish? Ted's gut instinct says he didn't do it either. When another suspect turns up dead it seems as if one case is solved but another one remains. Ted decides to give Brady a little help and uncover clues about any other possible suspects. With assistance from her best friends, Ted travels the area unraveling clues as she goes. She also becomes closer to Tavish who seems like her dream man but there's a niggle of doubt because Kristi was, shall we say, voluptuous and Ted is flat as a pancake after surgery. Plus, Brady still suspects Tavish of murder. Ted feels it's up to her to solve the mystery to prove to Brady and everyone else that Tavish is not a killer and neither is she.

I really enjoyed this mystery a lot. There are tons of suspects and they all seem a little too obvious. My mind went in a different direction but I was wrong. The plot is fast paced enough to have kept me reading up to the 40% mark but I didn't feel an overwhelming desire to wake up really early and read. I happily finished the book the next night. My only real complaints is that all the suspects plus a romantic subplot make the story feel a little too long. That and there's too much of the dog has to go out each morning. It's the same thing-over and over. We know. Dogs do usually have to go out. While Gracie is adorable, it's a little too repetitive. I got a little tiny bit confused because everyone keeps referring to Tavish as a big New York author yet he lives in LA. I don't understand why he has dogs in Britain and New York if he lives somewhere else. There was one other little inconsistency that stood out to me. When Ted comes home to find a dramatic scene and Brady arrives to help, Char seems to be there. I'm not sure how she got there. Then later Char has been filled in so it sounds like she wasn't there. These are just minor quibbles. I award bonus points for frequent Harry Potter Series Box Set references and also Jane Austen references and quote from Sense and Sensibility.

Lake Potowatomi, Wisconsin is the town where the story is set. It seems to be closer to Indiana and Illinois than the rest of Wisconsin. Chicago is a day trip away. This town doesn't have a lot of charm yet. There is one super nosy old lady who loves to spread nasty gossip. This town seems to be populated by elderly people and when Tavish Bentley comes to town, he brings the LA stereotypes trailing after him. I hope there are future books so the town can be developed better. I have news for Wisconsinites-you aren't the only ones to say "yous guys." It's spelled "youse guys" and is similar to "De boatayuz" meaning more than one person. We also use the word bubblah the way Ted uses bubbler for a public drinking fountain.

I really like Ted. We have a lot in common so I'm glad I picked this book to read. I don't usually read about 40-something heroines because they're usually married, divorced and/or have children. I'm not in that space right now in spite of my age so I prefer reading about younger heroines starting out in adulthood. I'm happy to have made an exception for Ted. The one big thing you need to know about her is that she is a breast cancer survivor. This is not incidental to the story. It's a huge part of who Ted is. She chose to have a double mastectomy and no reconstruction. She is happy being flat if it means being alive. This causes tension with her mother who is not happy with her daughter's choice because "men like breasts." Ted is cheerful, optimistic and a great mom to Gracie, the American Eskimo dog. She even puts up with her mother. Ted's sleuthing has a purpose and isn't completely stupid. I was surprised she didn't figure out what I did that finally led me to a conclusion about who did it. I think Ted sounds like she's the author's alter ego so it's a little funny to read a cozy mystery about a cozy mystery writer. (Not ALL cozy mystery lovers are little old ladies).

Secondary characters abound in this novel. Most importantly is Gracie, Ted's dog daughter. Ted is a real dog lover and Gracie is her child. While I do think Gracie's morning ritual is repetitive, she plays an important role in the story because of it. I appreciate the love and care Ted gives Gracie and really felt her love in one particular scene. I don't know what I'd do in that situation! Ted's mother is yet another "high class" disapproving, you need a man mother. Why do all these cozy mystery heroines have the same mother? LOL! I warmed up to her by the end when Ted revealed a private conversation between her parents she overheard. Ted has three best pals. Her gal pals, Char and Sharon, are basically alike. They've been friends forever and encourage Ted in her adventures. Sharon is happily married and Char, a librarian turned bookstore owner, is in an on-again, off-again relationship with Sheriff Brady Wells. Brady is a good guy. He's in over his head with his first murder AND his best friend is involved (don't question why he's investigating when he's close to the suspect) but he knows how to play by the book. He isn't incompetent or stupid. He's also a good friend who worries about Ted because she's a friend. Tavish, a Colin Firth lookalike British mystery author who can quote Jane Austen at the drop of a hat! I don't blame Teddie for being attracted. They actually do have a lot in common. I was surprised and actually pleased by the way their relationship developed. He seems kind and funny. He loves dogs an Gracie likes him so I don't think he's a murderer. Tavish brings along his assistant, Melody, an intense, black clad young woman who takes her job a little too seriously. I think she has a crush on Tavish.

The locals include Augie Jorgensen (my cousin?), the deputy. He is Sharon's "little" brother. He comes across as young and eager but not too intelligent. Bea Andersson at the bakery has a crush on Tavish. She behaves very unprofessionally asking him to sign her book. Fred Matson, an elderly man who frequents the local bakery and enjoys the drama of the mystery unfolding before him. The elderly population of the town doesn't seem to have anything to do. Wilma Sorensen is a horrid old woman, going out of her way to spy on people and spread nasty gossip. Her walking friend Barbara Christensen is a little nicer to Ted but puts up with Wilma.

Tavish's fiance, or ex-fiance, as it turns out, Kristi was a stereotypical blond, fake boobed, bimbo (Ted is an expert at spotting silicone implants since her own encounter with them after cancer surgery). Kristi sounds like a gold digger and after Tavish because he's handsome, clever and RICH. What on earth does he see in her? Kristi's pal aka Boobsey Twin, is a Kristi clone. She's quick to accuse Ted of murder and is just not a nice person at all. I think she could be the killer. There are tons of suspects. Tom, Kristi's abusive ex, claims he loves her and is distraught at her death. He's clearly a no-good, alcoholic bum. He belongs in jail. Then there's Annabelle, Tavish's crazy stalker fan who is in love with him. She's totally crazy and delusional but once we meet her family, I began to feel super sorry for her. The Grubbs shoot to the top of the weird possible suspects list. Darlene is clinging to lost youth and puts up with a slob of a husband and a cretin son-in-law. Harley Cooke is a disgusting pig. He's a lazy slob, a womanizer and completely heartless. Ted and I would both like him to be the killer. Tavish had a type and his ex-wife Lucinda seems to look the part but is actually a cutthroat realtor. She's vindictive and selfish. Jewel, a young woman who works in a coffee shop could be another crazy Tavish Bentley fan who may have killed a rival. She certainly isn't very pleasant. Finally, Ronald Simms, a disgruntled writer who holds a grudge against Tavish for supposedly stealing Ronald's ideas even though the court ruled otherwise. Ronald is super weird and creepy. His books sound terrible and nothing like Tavish's. This guy sounds like a whiny loser who blames everyone else for his problems. He makes my skin crawl.

There are recipes! OMG I love Scandinavian pastry and I have Scandinavian pastry cookbooks so why have I never heard of fattigaman bakkles or Danish Butter Cake? (I have seen recipes of the cookies and the cake seems to be a midwestern thing). I want to try the cake with a slight adaptation and remove the almond flavor. It sounds like Victoria Sponge with a custard layer. No wonder Tavish loves it so much.

I highly recommend this mystery to cozy mystery fans when it is released in August.

This is the first book in a new cozy series by author Laura Jensen Walker. I thought the story was a solid start to the series. Theodora St. James, or Teddie as she is known by friends, is a sympathetic and likable protagonist. She is a breast cancer survivor and is taking nothing for granted as she lives her life. She is surrounded by a secondary cast of characters that includes her two best friends Sharon and Char, and her childhood friend Brady, the town Sherriff, as well as her mother and her cute dog Gracie. I thought the secondary characters were well done and enjoyed the friendship between all of them. Teddie is a bit self-deprecating when it comes to some of the repercussions of her cancer, but there were times when I just wanted to smack her mother. Fortunately, she mellowed by the end.

The mystery involves two killings that occur when a well-known writer comes to town on a book tour. He and Teddy hit it off but things don't go as planned when she circumstances appear that she is the killer. I thought the mystery was the weakest part for me. I'm not really good at always figuring out the whodunit part of a cozy mystery, but this time I did. Early on I suspected that I knew who the culprit was and I was a bit baffled as to why this person was not even on the radar. To me, it seemed obvious. I also thought it was a bit flimsy that Teddie became a suspect on circumstantial evidence.

All in all, I enjoyed the book. The characters were interesting and it was fun to see how Teddie tried to clear her name. There is a budding romance with the other author that I think works for the series and characters. I enjoyed this story enough that I will check out the next book in the series. Oh...Teddie is a baker, which helps relieve her stress, so there are some delicious sounding recipes included.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Crooked Lane Books, through Netgalley.

Book 1 Teddie ( Theadoria) had breast cancer 5 years ago. She is a Author of funny mysteries and she loves to bake ( mostly sweets like her grandma used to do of Danish and Norwegian baked goods). There is a book signing of a famous Author Tavish coming to the bookstore where her best friend Char works. He is from Engand. He had a fiance there with him. Something terrible happened to her a scarf that Teddie had worn ( someone stole it in bathroom) was wrapped around Kristie ( Tavish fiancee) neck. So then you know she is prime suspect. The 3 Musketeers ( what Sharron Char and Teddie called each other ever since they were in high school) tried to figure out who the killer was. There were 2 deaths in this book. Love how Teddie does not give up after she had breast cancer. She keeps on writing books and finds love. She has a Alaskian Eskimo pup Gracie that helps her through and her mom and best friends. She inspires me to know that you can always not give up no matter how something like breast cancer can not keep you down. This is a fantastic series will keep on reading these.

If you love a good cozy mystery with a unique, fearlessly quirky lead character (and a wonderfully sweet doggo to boot!), this is for you. I truly enjoyed Laura's protagonist, Teddy, who refreshingly embraces her hard-won battle with breast cancer and does not loathe her boobless body. I LOVE that! Great friends, a couple scarves I now covet, Wisconsin bakery treats that made my mouth water, a mystery that had me guessing through the whole thing, a couple of truly creepy people who gave a bit of edge to the story, and a budding romance that was truly enjoyable. All around a really fun read!

Teddie St. John is a good, strong character who shines in Murder Most Sweet, by Laura Jensen Walker.
While attending a book signing for a well known author, Teddie finds herself swallowed up in a murder investigation. Teddie is known for writing her own mysteries, so finding herself on the suspect list throws her into investigative mode.

I found this book to be very entertaining and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

This book is true to Laura Jensen Walker's humorous girl power style, but seemed to lack the strength of her previous books. As a fan of Jensen Walker's previous books, I was excited to see she had branched into murder mystery. I enjoyed the first few chapters, and giggled my way through many of the scenes, but the story seemed to lose momentum the further I got into the book, and the ending was a little disappointing. A lot of the lines in the last few chapters lacked imagination, and felt hackneyed.

Also, those who appreciated Jensen Walker's winding inspirational Christian thoughts/themes through her books will be disappointed with this book. There's no mention of faith in this book, except for a single interaction between the main character and a pastor's wife, and even that didn't mention anything faith-wise. Plus, there's encouragement by a friend of the main character to spend the night with the love interest, and the only argument against doing so is the main character is still getting to know him. Definitely a step a way from Jensen Walker's previous books.

Another good cozy in a brand new series. Teddie, a cancer survivor navigates life as an author herself and baker. Her companion is her sweet dog Gracie. Loved the interaction between Teddie and Gracie. She has a close set of friends and the characters and chemistry are quite developed. Mystery was good, Loved seeing Teddie get into costumes to do her sleuthing 😂 Thanks to NetGalley for an opportunity to read this book.

I may be a bit biased, having been born and raised in Wisconsin, but Murder Most Sweet by Laura Jensen Walker is a fantastic start to A Bookish Baker Cozy Mystery series!

I think everyone will enjoy the book, but those from the Midwest will find all the local nods super fun. Yous Guys (not you guys, yous… yes, that’s how some folks around here talk), Kringles (a delicious Danish pastry with lots of flakey layers), Pabst Beer (the first beer I drank and probably the reason I don’t drink beer… you either love Pabst or hate it), and Walker even ended the book with a nod to Accordions and Polka Music… you really can’t get more Wisconsin than that.

There were so many great characters too. I often find myself liking the sleuth’s friends or sidekick better than the protagonist, but Teddie is awesome. I love her sense of humor and that she is very forthcoming about her double mastectomy. And the way Teddie is with her American Eskimo, Gracie-girl is adorable, and so true to how people are with their fur babies. I had never heard pee-mail before, when a dog is checking out what other dogs have been in their territory, but loved the image… if we had a dog instead of three cats, that’s what I would say, “Are you ready for pee-mail time?!?”

And Teddie’s friends and love interest are wonderful too. First, I just love the love interest’s name, Tavish, and he really does seem lovely. ;) He brings her flowers, helps out when he can, and loves dogs too… as a bonus he’s a writer too and rich. Yes, please!
Sharon and Char really do act like people who you’ve been friends with forever, they don’t put up with any of Teddie’s bull and push her towards a relationship. I was a bit concerned with Teddie’s mom at first, I’m so over mom’s being horrible to their daughters in cozies, but by the end of the book, Claire is a more enjoyable character.

As for the mystery there were plenty of suspects and some red herrings. I did know who the killer was early on, but that’s just because I read a lot of mysteries, and it was more of a gut feeling.

Already looking forward to book two in the series, Deadly Delights, coming out later in 2021, and I’m excited to read Walker’s other new cozy mystery series coming out January 2021, with the first book being called Hope, Faith & A Corpse.

Murder Most Sweet is a deliciously sweet read!
A small town baker and mystery writer with an adorable American Eskimo dog named Gracie, Teddie St John is not your typical amateur sleuth.
When she finds herself not only in the middle of a murder investigation, but being looked at as a major suspect, Teddie must put her mystery writing skills to work to solve a real life murder before she loses her favorite means of livelihood and before anyone else is killed.
Wonderful characters, romance, jealousy, revenge, and a very tricky mystery, make this book a must read for all cozy mystery fans. I’m already wishing for more books in this series.
There are also recipes and fun tidbits of Wisconsin lore. What a fun read.
I loved it. Highly recommended.

Very enjoyable read! Loved the sense of family and friends that Ted has. Great mystery, the ending was a surprise, although I did suspect the killer initially. Fun book! Looking forward to more adventures with Ted and her friends.

Murder Most Sweet is a mystery set in a small town in southeastern Wisconsin. Teddie, a cozy mystery author herself, attends author Tavish Bentley's book signing at her friend's bookstore in town. Tavish is a huge bestselling suspense writer and he's drawn a crowd. Teddie's scarf is stolen while she's in the bathroom but is later found; unfortunately it's wrapped around the neck of a murder victim, a woman connected to Tavish.

Teddie is a fantastic character. She's a breast cancer survivor, and like many cancer survivors is still dealing with treatment side effects such as hot flashes from early menopause and other people's reactions to her mastectomy. The author herself is a breast cancer survivor so it's no surprise she described Teddie respectfully while not glossing over the realities.

Teddie's sleuthing is interesting, and she thinks through her plans instead of running straight into danger. That's not to say mistakes aren't made, but amateurs can't be perfect when even the pros aren't. There is also a great cast of characters, which include multiple who have been Teddie's friends for years and Teddie's sweet dog Gracie.

There is a lot of humor, as well as great Wisconsin references throughout. Recommended for fans of mysteries, particularly cozy mysteries. #cozymystery #mystery

Teddie St, John - author, breast cancer survivor, amateur sleuth and one of the most relatable and fun cozy mystery main characters I've "met"! When Teddie's best friend Char hosts an author signing in her Wisconsin hometown bookstore, who could have known murder, stalkers, "exes", intrigue and love would come with the arrival of handsome English author, Tavish Bentley? Certainly, not Teddie who was perfectly happy writing her cozy mystery series, baking delicious Danish & Norwegian treats, enjoying life and being a "Mom" to her adorable ball of canine fluff - Gracie.

There are so many great things to say about this book - Teddie is smart, kind, full of life and humor and has a different view of her life after surviving breast cancer and mastectomy. Her charm and wit make for an incredibly positive and likable amateur sleuth. Her group of friends - The Three Musketeers -are 40-something women you'll love and Teddie's fashionista mother is a force to be reckoned with! The mystery is fast-paced and full of twists and turns.

I didn't want the book to end and I can't wait to catch up with Teddie and her friends & of course, the delightful Gracie!

I received an ARC from NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

I really loved this book and the unique main character! Teddie's sense of humor was so awesome in light of her being a breast cancer survivor and making little jokes about herself. She was a strong lady who knew what she wanted and didn't want. The cozy mysteries she wrote sounded really good, maybe a little like this series ;) From reading the author's bio, I feel like she's adding some of her own experiences to Teddie's life, and it was all so interesting. I enjoyed the characters of Char and Sharon a lot too! The three of them really were like the 3 Musketeers. I couldn't put the book down at all during the time Char and Teddie went on a road trip to sleuth. Gracie was just the sweetest dog ever and definitely played a good part during the showdown with the killer.

I'd had some suspicions about the person who ended up being the killer but fell for the red herrings along the way. I was happy to see my suspicions were right though. I'm so anxious to read the next book in this series!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

If you like baking, writing and cute dogs this book is for you.

Teddie St. John is a breast cancer survivor, author and baker. While at a book signing for a famous author that's being held at her friend Char's bookstore she comes across more than just books.

While the book signing is going on Teddie needs to run to the ladies room.
While in the ladies room Teddies scarf was stolen. Soon Teddie stumbled across the dead body of the authors ex-fiancee and that's not all her scarf is wrapped around the body's neck.

Instead of writing a mystery she needs to solve one or she will be the only suspect the police look at. So with her friends and Gracie her dog she gets into gathering the clues..

I really enjoyed this book very much I loved the main character she was great lead and the supporting cast wants to make you come back and visit with them again.

I can't wait till the next book in this series comes out.

Murder Most Sweet by Laura Jensen Walker is the debut novel in A Bookish Baker Mystery series. Teddie St. Johns is a strong female protagonist who is an author, avid baker, and breast cancer survivor. Teddie writes a cozy mystery series set in a town similar to her own of Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin. She is a likeable and relatable protagonist who is going through early menopause (from chemo). We get to see how the breast cancer has changed Teddie’s body and life. There are some humorous moments. There are a variety of secondary characters that includes her fashionista mother, Sheriff Brady Wells, and her two close friends, Char and Sharon. Teddie has an American Eskimo dog named Gracie who is such a sweetie. Two women die in this whodunit after famous author, Tavish Bentley comes to town. Teddie becomes a suspect because she has no alibi and her scarf was used as the murder weapon. The evidence is circumstantial, but the police must follow procedure. The clues, like the killer, were obvious. I would have liked a more challenging mystery. Despite two murders, romance is in the air for Tavish and Teddie. At times, Murder Most Sweet felt more like a romance than a mystery. Teddie likes to bake and does so frequently especially when she is stressed. She whips up treats for friends and for bribes to get information. It was interesting learning about the pastries native to Teddie’s ancestry and Wisconsin like the Kringle. To my disappointment, there foul language present throughout the story (mild). I preferred it when these type of words were taboo in cozies. There is a scene involving Gracie that dog lovers will find upsetting. I loved the Lord Grantham reference. Murder Most Sweet is a lighthearted cozy mystery with a bevy of baked goods, an attractive author, modish mother, a concerning contract clause, and one worried writer.

4.5 stars

This is the first book in the A Bookish Baker mystery series by Laura Jensen Walker.

Teddie had been about to appear during a book talk along with popular author, Tavish Bentley when she gets an unexpected hot flash and retreats to the bathroom. While cleaning up she gets her shirt too wet and decides to leave but notices that someone stole her nice silk scarf from the bathroom. Bummer. Later when walking her dog she comes across the body of a bottled blonde who just happened to be Tavish’s fiancee and her silk scarf is tied around the dead woman’s neck! Now she is suspect number one!

This was really fun to follow. I enjoy digging into new series and this one caught my attention right off the back. The protagonist has had her breasts removed due to cancer and this series shows how she handles her life while trying to solve the mystery at the same time. She speaks about knitted knockers and why she likes to live the flat chested life even though her family wants her to get implants.

From what I am gathering, Tavish may turn into a recurring character and vie for Teddie’s affection. I kinda like this idea for this series. It’s one of those aspects that will keep people coming back for more. Who doesn’t like the idea of a bestselling author falling in love with them, the flat chested gal, when they normally preferred bottled blondes with bib knockers.

This is definitely a series I want to continue with. Just loving it.

If you like cozy mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

MURDER MOST SWEET by Laura Jensen Walker
The First Bookish Baker Mystery

Teddie St. John is known for her writing, her baking, and her scarves. A mystery writer, Teddie is happily single with good friends and an adorable dog. Teddie is pleased to meet the dashing bestselling British author Tavish Bently at her friend's book store, but a menopausal emergency causes her to leave the book signing early. Deciding to take her pup for a walk, Teddie lets Gracie take the lead only to find herself behind the bookstore with Gracie barking at a dead woman. A dead woman with one of Teddie's scarves around her neck!

A captivating mystery is just one of the things that make MURDER MOST SWEET a standout. I really like Teddie and her self deprecating humor. I understand her doubts about Tavish; is he truly interested in her or merely looking for information and deflecting suspicion from himself? I love her friendships with her childhood friends, their banter and camaraderie enhancing the cozy feel of the book. I also appreciate Teddie's relationship with her mother, a tricky one, to be sure. The delectable descriptions of the food made my mouth water and stomach rumble. I really want a taste of that Danish layer cake, but although the recipe was thoughtfully provided it's a bit complicated for me. I'll just have to hope I can snag a Kringle from Trader Joe's!

MURDER MOST SWEET is a delightful start to a new series. Good friends, delicious food, and bookish people make this intriguing mystery a hit.

Teddie St. John is a breast cancer survivor and cozy mystery writer. She attends a book signing for Tavish Bentley at her friend, Sharon's inn. While she is in the restroom, she hears two women arguing and one of them steals Teddie's scarf. Her scarf is soon used in the murder of the Tavish's ex fiancé. The sheriff, an old friend of Teddie's, doesn't believe she killed her but has to look into it since it was her scarf and she found the body. When a second body shows up belonging to a stalker of Tavish's who was also killed with a scarf of Teddie's things get even worse. She and her two best friends start their own investigation.

I really enjoyed this book. I love Teddie as a main character and her dog, Gracie. The supporting characters of her friends were great and well-developed. I'm not sure how I feel about her mother though. At times she was rude and obnoxious and others was great. I loved the interactions between Teddie and Tavish and am looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes in future books. I received this book from net galley in exchange for an honest review.

"Murder Most Sweet" the first instalment in the "A Bookish Baker Mystery” series by Lara Jensen Walker Is a easy read and entertaining if on the little slow side for me personally. But as with some first in series that can be expected. I did enjoy it enough that I will read the second instalment to see if it improves.

I enjoyed visiting Lake Potawatomi, Wisconsin and meeting Teddie and her friends Sharon and Char. But by far my favourite was furbaby Gracie the American Eskimo dog. I’m a sucker for pets in my cozies.

I requested and received an advance reader copy of this book from Crooked Lane and Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review.

I'm always up to try a new cozy series set in my home state, and this bookish/foodie cozy was a pleasant treat. There is enough to make this a solid singular story with plenty of character development and community introductions, while still setting up some potential for future entries in the series. It made me crave kringle and I felt it got the region "right". Charming and fun!
