Wow!!!

Oh my, this does not look good for Reives at all, hmm I wander if this means his mate could be a gargoyle, well I guess we will see when his story comes along. But for now I am happy that Esme and Heikon finally can celebrate being mates.really good story Zoe Chant, loved it.

What made this one interesting was the connection that Esme and Heikon had in the past and now how they are dealing with seeing each other again. It's easy to see why Esme was upset with Heikon, but Heikon also had a good reason why he couldn't tell her what happened. I was glad that Esme gave Heikon a chance. It was fun to see them date and get to know each other again, but I hated how it all came crashing down. The only good thing is that things were finished once and for all and now these two can live their lives happy and safe.

DNF at 18%.

This second chance romance infuriates me. I'll start with saying he didn't cheat on her. But, she thought he was dead for 18 years and she finds out he's alive from someone else, not him. We get his POV so I know that he thought about her and DECIDED NOT TO CONTACT HER. His excuse? He needs to get his life in order before he goes after her.

Fuck him.

Twenty years ago, they found out they were mates but his kingdom is in danger. She wants to help him, but he sends her away for her safety and says he'll be there in a week or two.

While she's gone, he's attacked and their mate bond is severed by the attack. She thinks he died and he's pretty close to death for a while, so I don't blame him for not contacting her. She's also in dire straits because broken mate bonds aren't a joke and she's pretty darm sick/close to death for a while.

At some point, he's alive and plotting to get his kingdom back. He "thinks of her when awake and dreams of her at night" but he DOESN'T try to contact her to let her know he's alive!?

Okay, he's actively in hiding from his enemies, so I'll give him a break on that.

But, he secures his kingdom 2 YEARS AGO and still doesn't reach out to her cause "he wants his home to be nice for her". In the meantime, she learns he's alive so all she can think is that he purposely broke their mate bond and doesn't intend to be with her ever. While he's thinking, "someday, I'll reach out and get this mate thing going again". So selfish and so unthinking.

The only reason they meet is because she comes to help save his home from another attack and he FINALLY tries to talk to her.

It made me so angry because he doesn't realize all the pain she went through because of this and i know they're going to get back together but I cannot stand him.

Plot: Esme and Heikon have only known each other for one week, but they're dragons, so they know they are fated mates. Heikon is having some trouble with his family, though, and so he sends Esme away to keep her safe, promising to some to her in one week. That was the last time Esme saw him, for twenty years.
Twenty years pass, and Esme and Heikon see each other again when she goes to help his family (who is connected to her daughter's father's family) in a battle. For the longest time, she didn't even know he was alive; twenty years before, she felt the mate bond sever, painfully, and she assumed he was dead until recently. Heikon believes that Esme knew the reason (his brother poisoned him, which broke the bond - although why Heikon believed she would know that when he never told her confused the heck out of me). Now they are together again, and even though they are no longer mates, he wants to be with her; if only he can convince her it's a good idea.

Character development: Fated mate stories where one of the mates "rejects" the other (whether it's on purpose or not, doesn't matter the reason) always make me cry - this one was no exception. I felt so bad for poor Esme, and she seemed to really be making the most of her life. I really admired her for how she moved on and added meaning and worth to what could have been a depressing life without her mate. Heikon was great, I guess, but he could have gotten in touch with her at any time and chose not too. It was cowardice, plain and simple, at some point. He had to have imagined that she was hurting over what happened, even if he didn't cause the split. He assumed she knew what happened, even though he never told her - that just doesn't make sense! But I guess she wanted him, so maybe that's the dragon version of not picking up your dirty socks off of the floor - annoying, but not a dealbreaker.

Would I read more from this author/in this series: Yes

Amazing story about two dragon shifters

Esmeralda finally found her mate in Heikon, but they did not sealed the mate bond 20 years ago. During a war against his brother, Heikon's mate bond was severed.

Esmeralda is a dancer dragon whose love of all things musical is her hoard. Will these two dragons rediscovered love?

These characters are funny, stubborn, and relatable. Plot is how twe stubborn dragon shifters compromise and fall in love.

I like how in-depth the characters' personalities are there most enduring qualities. Highly recommended.

Good

It’s nice to see Heikon get a happy ending. I wasn’t sure about him when we first met him in another book, but then he grew on me in Darius’s book. And I’m not usually a fan of second-chance books that have flashbacks, but this book was well done, and didn’t linger too much in the past.

This is an OK dragon shifter romance, but I did have minor issues with it. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded down to 3 stars.

From the earlier books in the series, I wasn't sure I would ever really like Heikon -- he just seemed so cold and detached. But this book explains why, and he finally shows his heart. I did think that Esme forgave him a little too easily. What happened to him was awful, but he should have contacted her as soon as he could. I did enjoy how she made him fix the toilet in her building before she forgave him.

Esme was OK, and once she forgave Heikon, they were good for each other. I really liked how friendly she was with her elderly dance students, and that it didn't bother her that most of them were not shifters.

One problem I have with all of Zoe Chant's series is that there is so long between books. Lots of times I have to go back and reread some of the earlier books in a series, simply because it has been so long that I don't remember all the characters. That is frustrating. I know Zoe Chant is actually a group of authors, and one person writes all the books in a series -- but I wish the books in a series could be published closer together.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Coming Home!!!

Esmeralda Lavigna, an old Dragon shifter, former partner of Darius Keegan ( DAY CARE DRAGON ), Melody's ( BEAR IN A BOOKSHOP ) mother and the one teue mate of Heikon. Tweenty years ago she lost her beloved because of some evildoers. Now she was back in the same place she'd trying to avoid since the last time she'd been there. But Heikon needed her help out of friendship for Darius, she decided to help him and his clan. Even though she was dying a little bit on the inside.

Heikon, the clanlord of the Cocoran clan had loved once and lost his fated mate Esmeralda Lavigna. She was his everything then he was betrayed by someone within his clan and betrayal caused their bond to sever. She was back in Aerie and despite what she said, he knew that she still felt what they'd meant to each other.

She left Aerie without giving him a chance to explain what happened all those years ago. So he did what any man in love would do, he followed her and didn't stop until she heard him out. When she learned the truth, she understood why he did what he did but it still hurt to think that he didn't trust her enough to share his burden with her.

Esme finally decided to give Heikon another chance, one that he deeply appreciated. They reconnected and took a family trip to Greece with some of their loved ones. While there, they learned that his brother escaped from his mother. There were tensions when the truth about Heikon's decision came out. Loved Esme standing her ground this time around. They were stronger together than apart.

It was great to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I'm looking forward to Reive getting his story and for the new generation to grow up.

DANCER DRAGON is the sixth book in Zoe Chant's BODYGUARD SHIFTERS series. It was alluring, heartwarming and a marvelous read. Incredible job by Zoe Chant. Two thumbs up!

Second Chance at Love...Always a Good Story!

Dancer Dragon, book 6 in Zoe Chant's Bodyguard Shifters series, is another delightful paranormal romance. The storyline is not as original as some of her others. However, as a second chance romance there is a paranormal twist to the usual fated mate story that is very interesting. I refuse to spoil it by telling you what it is! You will just have to read it to find out. You should really read it! Zoe Chant has a very creative mind, that she has a way of taking an old tried and true concept and weaving in her own touch, to make it new. And exciting, too! There is not as much suspense in this book. The action is more the sweet kind of romance building rather then the fight for life you encounter in her other novels. Though, there is a brief struggle and duel to the death near the end. What is all Zoe Chant, is the beautiful descriptions of the worlds her hero and heroine live in. With Zoe Chant you are whisked away on a magic carpet, to mountain lairs, a city art community, Greece and even a small mountain town in the alps. I so love travelling to far away places from the comfort of my rocking chair! As it is the only way I can currently travel due to the circumstances that limit my movements these days, I am grateful for Zoe's vivid word pictures, a printed travelogue for my imagination. Someday, I hope to see the Alps for myself, until then I have Zoe Chant as my travel guide. The trip was extensive but not as tiring since there is no jet lag when you fly on the back of a dragon, or so it seems. Sit a minute with a cup of coffee and Zoe Chant novel, especially Dancer Dragon. It will be an entertaining interlude I assure you!

And here we have yet ANOTHER Lauren Esker book where I'd have told you before I started it that I was just reading it to complete the series and where I wasn't expecting to like the characters (I wasn't a huge fan of either Heikon or Esme when I met them each in previous instalments) PLUS there's the issue of my least favourite trope: a longstanding communication issue that could have been solved with a 5-minute honest conversation earlier in the piece.

And yet. On the surface, what Ms Esker has done with this instalment in the series is to examine - from the characters' perspective - what happens in a relationship when the bond the parties originally shared is broken and both of them have to somehow work their way to something new (because going back to what you had just isn't possible). But on a more meta, breaking-the-fourth-wall kind of level, it feels like she's also looking at the standard industry trope of a fated mate (on which, let's face it, the entire Zoe franchise is based) and acknowledging that, yeah, that's taking-the-easy-way-out relationship writing right there, and kind of... deconstructing it with her characters.

A particular line that stood out to me was: "It was all too easy when you were a shifter to think that love would be delivered to you on a silver platter. Someday you'd find your mate and then things would be simple. Right?", although there were a few others along the same lines.

And so I found myself really enjoying that aspect of the story enough that it gave Heikon and Esme time to... if not grow on me completely, then at least for me to feel invested in their relationship and glad for them once they got their HEA. And I'm quite looking forward to finding what happens to Reive in the next instalment now.

An Old Love Story

I was so surprised when I saw that it was Esme’s story and it started 20 years ago. Like, we just saw her and clearly there was no mate attached.

So I settled in and now we know how H was able to tell Melody about breaking a mate’s bond.

I was a little upset with Esme when she still held on to her anger after she found out how it happened. She should have asked the ‘right’ follow up question. But we got to where we needed to be and my prediction came true near the end. But the twist I didn’t expect and that follow up story is where I’m off to next.

Clearly, compared to the dragons that we met in the fire series, these dragons have unusual hordes and hearts of hordes. Which I am totally fine with. Like H said, everyone is different and the same at the same time. In more or less words when he was pondering what he knew about gargoyles, humans and dragons.

We traveled so much in this book. And I liked seeing everywhere we went, but when my prediction came true it was in such an unexpected place. How did they even know to go there? And what causes the book that I’m going to read next, feels like it happed to justify writing that book.

I agree that more than likely a conflict would have had to occur for us to find us where we are now, but it feels a little too planed. But it’s said and done.

Later. I’m off to read up on Zoe’s version of gargoyles. I was hoping they would get a book.

Very different, but oh, so good!

To hear the story of two Dragon shifters whose matebond has been broken, is very sad, but intriguing to read. You can feel the pain in both of them. Heikon's and Esme's story unfolds gradually, and all the pieces out together one beautiful whole. The character development is a huge part of the story. To be honest, it wasn't until close to the end, that I figured out how this is part of the Bodyguard Shifters series! I was so caught up in their story, that it really didn't matter how it fit in!

There is a lively pace, but not as fast as many other shifter romances are, with a tentatively hopeful tone and a character oriented storyline with some action and some steamy scenes. The characters are vibrant and endearing, as well as complex. If you like your shifter romances with complex characters, action and a plot that keeps you guessing, then this is for you. But I would suggest that you read the series in order, so that you can get the most from the story! Enjoy! I am going to re-read this series, while waiting for the new one in 2020.

This book was amazing. Every 'Zoe' book I read is, but I really loved this one. Heikon and Esme's story was heartbreaking. If any couple deserved a second chance, it is these two. Heikon is devoted to his people. He's always made decisions for the safety of those he loves. Sometimes they just might not be the right ones. Esme has spent 20 years trying to recover from a broken heart. She is hurt and angry. A broken mating bond is rare. Can these two repair and rekindle the love they once felt for each other without it? Beautifully written and full of romance. No book would be complete without an act of betrayal, however, true love is strong. From the very beginning you can almost feel the emotions of the characters. I was unable to put it down. Even if you have not followed the series, I can guarantee you won't want to miss this one. I am voluntarily leaving this review of an advanced copy I received.

A good book!

I really liked the setting in this book. With the previous books in the series giving other details to add with these, it's nice to picture life in a mountain aerie for myself! It would probably require a need to fly but I'm okay with that. Most of us has dreamed of being able to fly. Anyway, this has a well written story and I love Esme's character. The author is very good with descriptions, and she's easy to visualize with her long red hair and dancing around the room in beautiful dresses. Good action, not a lot though. The gargoyles and their creepy stone buddies are nasty! Imagine trying to get away from something that can travel like they do! No thanks. But I'll go on to the next book, and I'm hoping it doesn't have the gargoyles in it!

Zoe Chant writes a lot of books and series. Some of the books overlap other series. This was one of those. This is about Esme and Heikon. I first encountered them in book one of the Stoneshifters series. Also mentioned are Melody and Darius who I encountered in the Bodyguard series. It seems I am reading out of order because this story should have been read before Stoneshifter Dragon. That book references events that happen in this book. Also, the Bodyguard books seem to precede this book but I haven't read all of those yet. So confusing!

Anyway, this was a very good book. It covers the topic of a severed mate bond, which is a huge deal in these shifter books. It's the story of two former fated mates who are trying to regain what was taken from them 20 years prior to this story.

Excellent story

Heikon and Esme were mates who had waited hundreds of years to find each other. Things were unsettled in Heikon’s clan and when his brother Braun tried to kill him with dragonsbane the mate bond was broken. It took years for Heikon to recover and all that time Esme thought he was dead. She learns he’s alive and has regained his position as clan leader but the hurt he’s caused her is too much to forgive. Heikon is determined to win her back. Their journey isn’t easy and is compounded when Braun breaks out of his prison. Heikon and Braun fight to the death as dragons. Excellent reading.

More dragons!! Esmeralda is Melody's mother and Darius' ex. Heikon is one of the older dragon shifters and once again presides over his clan which was nearly destroyed by his brother. His brother's scheme also destroyed the mate bond between Esme and Heikon. They are brought together again the fallout from book 4. She can't forgive him for leaving her and he's never forgotten her and their dragons insist there is no mate bond. Are love, affection and attraction enough or can they find their way back to the bond? When Heikon's past threatens his clan once again, they work together to save their families. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series - Reive, Heikon's nephew.

Twenty years ago, Braun Corcoran decided he’d best lead their dragon flight and deliberately planned coup to unseat his brother Heikon, destroy the heart of Heikon’s hoard and destroy the nascent mating bond between Heikon and Esmerelda ‘Esme’ Lavigna shifter. During the last two years, Heikon’s regained most of the losses but never contacted Esme.

When Esme comes to assist in the battle against the gargoyles, she makes it clear she doesn’t want Heikon without the broken mate bond she holds Heikon responsible for. Heikon decides to dragon up and goes to Esme’s comfort zone to plead his case, hoping against hope she’ll forgive and accept him.

Music....dragons....love

Heikan is a dragon shifter and the leader of the dragon clan. His love and mate is Esme. She is also a dragon shifter. Unfortunately just as they figured out they were mates Heikan was attacked and deeply injured by his brother. It took him a lot of years to recover and Esme thought he was dead. So she was so devastated the only reason she survived was because she has a daughter to care for. By the time Heikan got well and took his clan back it had been 20 years. When they were reunited it took a little while for Esme to trust him again. But love brought them together and they were so happy.

Esme was snarky, spiteful, and a bit wicked to Heikon when he came back into her life. She didn't let him explain about the past and the mating bond. Smh! WTH? Heikon's brother Braun was ruthless and pure evil. He got a second chance and he squandered it due to his jealousy and greed. I was glad Esme finally gave Heikon a second chance. This was a long hard fought love story, and they both survived danger and evil to be mates again. Poor Reive, my heart hurts already for him and what he'll go through. Great world building.

Heiken gets it all

Heiken and Esme finally get their happy ever after but the cost is high. Heiken loses everything thanks to his brother and the brother will never learn. Some people are never happy unless they have it all. Heiken had a heart and could not kill his brother when he had he chance. That choice will cost him dearly. Reive may pay the price due to the gargoyle poisoning. Esme finally finds out the full story and opens her heart to love again. It's a nice story and I still want a baby dragon. Lol

Heikon Is Poisoned By His

Brother. Left for dead, a mating bond destroyed, Heikon has spent years trying to recover his health and to reunite with his mate Esme. Esme has believed that Heikon died many years ago. Twenty years later he returns and expects her to be his mate and lover again? Not so fast. Esme has built a new life, a good life. Should she sacrifice that life for a man who is no longer her mate?

Excellent characters, an engaging storyline, drama, action and romance drive this book to it's exciting conclusion. Enjoy!

This is a follow on from the previous books with known other characters all interlinked.
I started off feeling sorry for these two but by half way through I was done.
I don’t think I have read a weaker hero than Hekion. He just keeps making bad decision after bad decision.
I won’t spoil the story but I just wanted to tell him to grow a set, especially in regards to his disgusting excuse for a brother.
Esme, really not sure how I ended up feeling about her.
Read through KU and quickly returned.

Dancer Dragon: Bodyguard Shifters (6)

Really loved this, always liked Zoe's books, the Bodyguard series is really good. This book in particular was excellent, just right for last in the series. But then I find there is one more, due out in January 2021, it says in the back of the book. Cheers for that Zoe, I know it's just 2 weeks away, but it's not even out for pre order. Besides, I really hate waiting for the next book, I can't not read, I have a 7 book lined up, grrrr

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Esmeralda + Heikon were mates.
Because of a betrayal, their mating bond were severed.
Now Esmeralda is back again,
Can Heikon win her back ?
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Perfect Title

So much heartache and tragedy in this book. But when Esme and Heikon are together, it is like a dance. I picture her in my mind dancing around Heikon, in human and in Dragon form. That is not a scene in the book, but it is the feeling the book gave me about the two lovers. Torn apart for 20 years, not understanding each other's circumstances. Attacked by an enemy again and again. This was a very good book.

Excellent episode in the series

This story is an excellent episode in the series of Bodyguard Shifters. I think it is best read as part of the series; else the references to earlier adventures may be confusing.

The star that I didn't award is for the infuriating motif of "My mind is made up. Don't confuse me with the facts." Unfortunately that over-used meme seems to permeate our culture.
