Monday Moody #1

The Chrono Unit

Rate this book
Debut novel of author Morgan W. Silver, featuring a strong female lead in an unusual world. A perfect blend of humour, mystery, and action. As well as a dash of romance.

Working for the Chrono Unit isn’t all bad. Despite the terrible coffee, the possibility of death, or the boring paperwork, there is the satisfaction of knowing that dangerous time travellers are kept in check.

Except that CU officer Monday Moody is secretly a Traveller herself.

In a world where time travel is either forbidden or exploited, Monday has plans to climb the corporate ladder and make changes. That is, if she lives long enough to reach those goals.

When the homicidal Traveller Blayze Caden, who also happens to be her childhood friend, is after her life, she forms an unlikely team to hunt him down. She also has to juggle the fact that a deaf girl, who is also a Traveller, shows up on her doorstep for help. Monday now has two secrets to keep.

Hiding the truth gets harder as she’s getting close to the mayor of Sheffield, an influential vampire who has ties to the UA and is at war with rebel Travellers, as well as when Blayze decides to try and out her in between murder attempts. Not only does she have to decide which secrets are worth fighting for, but also whose side she is on.

I was sent a copy of The Chrono Unit by Morgan W. Silver for review

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
This was such a fun, thrilling and intriguing read. This world is broken into four main types of gifted/supernatural beings - vampires, werewolves, time travellers and illusionists. They all have their own rules and laws governing their abilities and monitoring their activity. The highest controls are placed on time travellers.
Moody Monday is a Chrono Unit officer. She deals in crimes involving time travel, time jumps, rips in time and tampering with the timeline. Just your average day job. Moody is hiding a secret, she herself is an unregistered time traveller. This fact leads her to take in a 6 year old girl called Lovelace who also has time travel abilities. Lovelace was treated terribly at home for this and would suffer a worse faith if the authorities find out.
Things get more complicated when the Mayor, an enigmatic and gorgeous vampire named Oliver Marquis requests her help with tracking down her childhood friend, Blayze, who is tampering with time and killing people in order to break his murderous wife out of prison. This leads to Moody becoming the target as his next victim. As they work closely together to capture Blayze, Oliver’s interest in Moody goes from professional to carnal.
Can Moody stay alive long enough to stop Blayze? Will her secret finally get out and her life as she knows it be over? Can she remain professional with Oliver or will his vampiric charms lead to her falling for him? Only TIME will tell.
Loved this book and give it 🌟🌟🌟🌟. Great characters, interesting world building and well designed concept. I love how Morgan ties all the plot threads together for the big twist and reveal at the end. Can’t wait to read book 2 in this series.
I want to say The Chrono Unit isn't the genre I usually go for, but I feel that it's kind of genre-defying, which is awesome. The story was little too fast-paced for me at times, but there are some amazing elements in there. Monday has incredibly funny internal dialogue, the time travelling element was really well-executed and it's pretty refreshing that Monday isn't perfect in terms of looks. I don't want to spoil too much, but look out for the little bit of dialogue about the MP3-player; it really explains a lot.The ending really left me wanting more.
The Chrono Unit is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. Once I started reading, I truly could not put it down. This book has a relatable and entertaining narrator, a compelling and fast-paced plot, and dynamics between the characters which manage to be both realistic and humorous. I easily became immersed in the setting, and by the end I was praying that there would be a sequel soon! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an adventure/romance novel.
I love the story! It's a great beginning to a new triology.
The main character is so strong, smart and witty! I love the way she thinks.
All of the characters were interesting, and I love the twist on an old theme and the relationship with the childhood friend.
This was a fast-paced and funny story. Anyone who loves a good mystery, time travel and fun will enjoy this story - and find it to be a must-read.
The reason why I've not given this five stars is because this isn't really the type of genre I like to read and so because of that it didn't reach the top group of my ranked books. Would I read it again though? Yes, yes I would.
It's a great book for a winter's day with a cup of tea (or hot chocolate) while being cuddled up on the couch wrapped in a blanket. There's humour, excitement, a bit of romance and a mystery on top of all that. Honestly what more could you need!
I genuinely enjoyed this book. There's a great sense of humour and I laughed out loud more than once, but there's also an excellent exploration of this world and of the characters, without ever overdoing it. And it has some good mysteries as well, which means there's really something for everyone, imho. I'd recommend it for sure!
What a fun read! The character are all interesting and the story moves right along. I don't usually read time travel books but this is so much more. The author has woven several genres wrapped into one. Mystery, crime thriller, time travel, fantasy. Pick it up, grab your favorite snack and beverage and get reading!
I won this book in a goodreads drawing
A plucky British woman who is tasked with stopping time travellers, despite being one herself (isn't that always the way?) has someone trying to killer and gets saddles with a hearing impaired little girl. She still can't get over her first date, which happened well over a decade ago.
A little too British for me.
The Chrono Unit exists to keep time travelers in check. Yet, one of their star officers, Monday Moody, is a traveler herself. While keeping her abilities a secret, Monday plans to climb the corporate ladder and make changes…or so she hopes. With a homicidal traveller, Blayze Caden, on the loose, she is roped into a team to hunt him down. Yet this mission might be harder than she imagined, and it may in fact risk her life.
The idea of time travelers, a government organization, and a determined young woman really did appeal to me. I love a good sci-fi adventure, and that’s exactly what this book provided: a fun, entertaining adventure with time travelling, vampires, and more! Morgan W. Silver has created a world that has something for everyone in it, and in this fast-paced afternoon read, you’ll have a fun time!
Yet, despite how much fun I had reading this book, I had a few personal hang ups with it. The most prominent one, and the reason why I ultimately rated this book 3 instead of 3.5 or 4 stars, was how the book seemed to fit the “Smurfette” trope. The Smurfette Trope is basically when there is one female character who all the male characters are infatuated with. In Monday’s team, while searching for Blayze, it felt like every man had either 1) dated Monday or 2) wanted Monday. While this trope might not bother everyone, it is one of my least favorite tropes, and often causes me to knock a story down by half a star.
The story itself is quite fast paced, as I mentioned above. While a lot of people will like that, I wish I got a chance to learn a bit more about the world and the Chrono Unit, before diving into the chaotic life of Monday Moody. This is a personal choice though. Other people might like to jump head first into this action.
While this story didn’t check off all the boxes for me, it is still a fun sci-fi adventure with a range of characters, an entertaining protagonist, and a bit of mystery. If you enjoy fast-paced, action packed stories…then this might just be for you!
