Will the bonds of Cassie’s team be enough to hold them together, or will outside forces continue to threaten them and their place at camp?
Now that Cassie understands how Camp Odysseus functions, she steps out of her comfort zone and learns to trust her team. That trust can only protect her so much, though, since secrets continue to lurk outside the team's reach. Cassie must learn to follow her instincts and believe in herself as well as Jay, Noah, Lucca, and Parker.
As a team, they have the power to be an unstoppable force at camp, but only if they work together and grow the connection slowly building between them.
While the first story had several gramatical/editing errors, the premise was enough for me to give this book a try.
Cassie, the FMC, is very close to being a Mary Sue but is 100% a pick-me girl. She makes multiple rude asides about other girls, such as they are always catty and how she's not like them. Never wears makeup, always put her hair in a bun and other than basic bathing puts zero effort into grooming herself yet is always stunning.
Its particularly annoying seeing as the author gave the other girls in the cabin such rich, differing personalty types. Fallon in particular is such an awesome character. Even the pretty, flighty girl character has some depth as she is a crack archer.
Another big issue for me is that there is some bad guys in the shadows for some unknown reason that the mean girl Mindy is a part of, inserted into the camp to suss out the girl they are searching for and yet behaves in such a petty, bullying manner that would be a massive liability for any sort of mission. She literally calls the FMC a slut in the chow hall, loud enough that everyone can hear and presumably there would be an adult to overhear, be it a councilor or even just food services staff.
We're also two books in but there is presumably no pathway for the characters to remain together as summer is only so long and they'll soon be headed off in different directions.
So while the premise is really interesting, I just can't see myself continuing this series.
This series started off really well, great actually, however, in this second book, Cassie comes across as confused. As the story progresses, it is as if her confusion bleeds into different aspects of the story; the book begins to read like a playbook of, “How to write a Reverse Harem.”
Camp Odysseus hasn’t been what Cassie expected. When she was sent there she expected her foster parents were trying to get rid of her but it was an opportunity. It’s a camp for gifted teens. It’s meant to challenge them and teach them to work as a team. Cassie’s team is made of her and four guys, Jay, Noah, Lucca, and Parker. They have a true connection. They have bonded together and excelled at every challenge. They have also been endangered and shot at. Now they will need to see if the bonds hold.
I thought the first book had so much potential but this second book took a huge step in the wrong direction. Cassie is too much. Her Mary Sue role competes with her Pick Me persona so I struggled to even like her. She is so “intelligent” yet there is no evidence of it in this book. Instead, I saw a girl who was scared of any new experiences and so insecure she panicked and thought the worst of the guys at every turn. She was simultaneously arrogant and lacking confidence. Overall, the story lacked depth and we are no closer to solving the camp’s mysteries or finding a way to cement Cassie and the guys’ relationship. Disappointing.
The first three chapters are 90% the same of the last chapters in book one. There are some minor additions with a section of them training. If you read the books back to back you can skim....if you aren’t then it is a nice recap.
The camp moves along and they have the relationship talk. The activities are fun and they bond as they train. We get some more info on who people are looking for but mostly still clueless. Some more mean girl stunts and jealousy. Lots of emotions expressed and plans for after camp. We get to know them all more and see they grow.
I like the plot and I like all the characters but I feel like it’s completely unfinished. Is there going to be a third book? Because it’s been just over two years since this book was released so I’m assuming not. I don’t feel like everything has been answered, and this book in particular felt very rushed. I was expecting the author to highlight on Cassie’s intelligence and gifts more and her background but they were skimmed over briefly and never had any depth. I’m just disappointed because I feel like the story could’ve been so much more or could have more.
I feel like I’ve been waiting for this book FOREVER and let me tell you, it’s definitely been worth the wait! I love Cassie and her Harem! With a little more steam, more background on our cast of characters, and picking up right where we left off, book 2 is everything that I hoped for. Now I’ll go sit in my corner and rock while I wait for book 3! 💜
I loved this book! Cassie and her harem are one of my favorites. They each bring something special or different to their team, which enhances their dynamic so much. The wait for this book was definitely worth it. I can’t wait for more of Cassie, Parker, Jay, Noah, and Lucca!!
YA. Contemporary. Rh. Skills camp setting. FMC POV. Cassie and her guys try and figure out what's going on with the gun shots while preparing for the camp olympics. Still liking cassie's harem.
