We have no shortage of people who hold leadership positions in our world, but how many of those could we truly call "leaders", let alone virtuous leaders? The old adage "A Leader is followed when he/she is in the room. A Good Leader is followed when he/she is out of the room. A Great/Virtuous Leader is followed long after they are dead..." is true. In this book, David outlines the framework for becoming a virtuous leader, one that leaves a Legacy behind and truly makes an impact on the world.
Something I will absolutely try to remember to listen to periodically to the best chapters. I would greatly appreciate, and it probably already exists, a cliff notes of each chapter. His the topic and lesson.Focusing on the get right, live right, lead right, leave right was a really nice approach to the book. Gave me a totally fresh perspective on F3.One criticism would be holy smokes just a bit too much jargon and code words. I get it, that is an important part of F3. I just continuously felt like the words we already use a lot on F3 Fargo were plenty enough, and I got beaten down by additional new words like accelerate, dolphin, bullfrog, lizard, kimono, flesh anchor, concentrica, etc got just a bit extra and sometime hard to track and remember what each word was. Classic example “Dolphin daffodil D2X”Som incredible lessons in here I will use in future COTs: 1) Pass praise take blame 2) Virtuous leader makes himself dispensable - works himself out of a job by training his underlings or cohort to do his job. Don’t hoard and protect your knowledge instead make your trainees better than you Overall I am glad I committed to this. I don’t think I would have finished it if I was scrolling down that PDF, so I am happy Koala made an audiobook for me to listen to!
The book has some great concepts, but it is has a LOT of jargon which makes it sound like mumbo-jumbo at times. It is a little bit of a manifesto as well, a philosophy created with new vocabulary. It took me about a year to get through. After I finished, I realized you can find the audiobook as a podcast! I wish I had found that sooner.
It does have some good principles though: - Leadership can be learned. It is a skill. A leader is a person who can influence others to do things they would not have done otherwise. Leadership is about Disruption from status quo; movement to advantage. It should be built on love. - Four quadrants: Get right, Live Right, Lead Right, Leave Right (legacy) - Fitness, relationship with food, relationship with work, relationship with your Creator (Live Third - after God and others) - Lead, be missional, develop other leaders - Vision, Articulation, Persuasion, Exhortation - Exhortation, candor, commitment, consistency - Sua Sponte leader - motto of Army Rangers. "of one's own accord" . -- In leadership, it describes individuals who act without waiting for formal prompting or permission. Most famously the motto of the elite U.S. Army Rangers, it characterizes proactive leaders who take ownership and drive results. - Pass Praise, take blame - The model of being "freed to lead" comes from Jesus training his disciples
A "meaty" book that is to be used as the go to F3 handbook or an above average leadership book. Its design is to be read over an over within a group or during self reflection. It's a must have for your library for years of use.
