Darcy Wallace finally got the courage to choose her own destiny and left her controlling ex-fiancé and headed from Kansas to Las Vegas. She almost makes it before her car breaks down, forcing her to make the rest of the trek on foot. When she reaches the Comanche, she spends the last of her money playing a progressive slot machine…and hits the jackpot before she passes out from exhaustion. Casino manager Mac MacGregor sets up the suddenly wealthy Darcy while she comes to term with the fact that she may finally be able to pursue her own dreams.

Darcy was pretty naive, especially next to the urbane Mac, but somehow they brought the best out of each other. Her emergence into her own true skin and self was fun to experience. She’d never been on her own and certainly not seen any of the world outside of her hometown. And Mac had to be careful to not subconsciously take control. It was a lovely romance despite Mac’s few boneheaded moves.

The story was even more enjoyable after the appearance of the extended MacGregor clan as they descended into Mac’s world once they recognized someone had finally captured his heart. Grandfather Daniel was his typical devious self, nudging the two whenever the opportunity presented itself. This is one of my favorites in the series.

I was in the mood for another romance novel so I grabbed this off of my bookshelf. I picked it up at a used library book sale awhile back. Believe me, I have scads of these for such moments. Darcy Wallace is from Kansas. She is beautiful and naive, and has been engaged to a very controlling and unkind man that makes her feel like she is less than she is. She breaks off the engagement and flees to Las Vegas. She arrives in town with $9.37 to her name. She finds herself at The Comanche Casino and puts her last few dollars in a slot machine and hits the jackpot and is an instant millionaire. She immediately faints and is rescued by the casino owner/manager Mac Blade. Mac immediately feels responsible for her so he puts her up in a hotel suite until she sorts things out and gets on her feet. What he didn't expect, though, was that he might feel more for her than just responsible. Darcy spreads her wings and all things become possible. She finds out that she is a strong, smart and independent woman and that she can do anything. But what she wants most of all is for Mac to love her.

First of all I'll say that I've not read anything by Nora Roberts that I didn't like. This book is just one of several books written about The MacGregors. Its sweet and fun and I loved watching Darcy discover what she is capable of and watching Mac realize that fate dealt him "The Winning Hand" when Darcy walked into his casino.

We all live ordinary lives. We wake up in the morning, we go to work/school/whatever, we work our asses off, we come home, we watch a little tv, maybe hang out with some friends or cuddle with our significant other and we go to sleep. And then we dream. We dream of being rich, being famous, being a trendsetter, winning the lottery.

Yes, we ALL want to be that girl, the one who hit the jackpot!

The one with a ticket to instant fame and wealth.

"Buying my way to a better dress sense!"

Finally... JACKPOT!!!!

The Winning Hand cashes in on all of our deepest fantasies of instant wealth and a hot guy to love. Darcy Wallace is literally down to her last dollar when she hits The Comanche on the Las Vegas Strip. She's punchy from walking in the desert sun with no food, water or rest. So when she hits the $2 million jackpot on the slot machine, all she can do is faint into sexy Robert MacGregor Blade's willing arms.

Mac is the ultimate gambler, but he has met his match in this fairy-like, naive looking Kansas girl on the lucky streak of a lifetime. He feels an urge to protect the innocent, overwhelmed Darcy from the wolves already baying at the door for her newfound wealth. Darcy, for her part, is alone and friendless in a strange town and is only too happy to trust her instincts and put her faith in Mac and his charming family.

The MacGregors has got to be my mostest favoritest romance series of all time. The family saga, spanning three generations and ten books, is heartwarming and charming. Read objectively, The Winning Hand is pretty awful in parts, especially the bits where Mac takes on a decidedly paternalistic air and tries to dictate what is best for Darcy; thankfully, despite being one of Nora's more submissive heroines, Darcy isn't a total wimp and manages to retain her own personality throughout.

But the real charm of this story, for me, is its fairytale aspect.

First you have the sheltered princess who runs away from the evil ogre. Then she wins a ton of money so she can ensure her continued liberation.

Then she meets Prince Charming, who shelters her in his castle. When the ogre comes to take the princess away, they face him down together. Then the prince and the princess fall in love.

There are some minor hurdles to cross on the path to true love, but eventually, the prince and the princess kiss and make up...

Whoops! That's not quite the kind of kissing I was looking for!

Sweet, love story of angel meets the charming devil in The winning Hand.
Darcy Wallace is a charming innocent belle, escaping Kansas and an oppressive fiancée down on her lack.
When a gamble at the Comanche hotel leads her into being a millionaire, the owner Mac Blade, oldest of Serena and Justin decides to help her.
Instantly charmed by the waif whose eyes are full of dreams, he introduces her to the money filled new world.
The story is mostly about her finding her footing and courage, the couple falling for each other, the hero fighting his feelings mixed with some good old Mac Gregor clan moments.
One of my top reads in this series . Many feels.

This is definitely the first category romance I ever bought, well before I knew that was the name for them.

And I really like this one! Darcy is such a sweet heroine and Mac works as a hero who doesn't want to be protective but can't help it, and yeah. I just like it a lot.

2 stars.

I had some major problems with this book:
1. I picked up a print book and forgot paperbacks aren’t waterproof like kindles; they don’t do well in the bath.
2. I kept tapping the page as if it would turn itself 😳.
3. The heroine was spineless and pathetic
4. I did not buy the happily ever after - Mac will leave her for a buxom showgirl the first chance he gets.

Why 2 stars then? Because Nora Roberts wrote it, and she writes pretty well, so I’ll forgive her.

Neponovljiva Nora Roberts! Odlična knjiga. Možda čak i najbolja u ovom serijalu.
Upravo sam je završila u 3 ujutro (ups 😂).

4.5 Stars ⭐️ Mackenzie Blade manages their family’s hotel and casino in Las Vegas. Darcy Wallace left home in Kansas when a guy wouldn’t leave her alone. With only $9 in her pocket, she wandered into the Casino and played a slot with her last dollar, making around $2 million dollars. Mac helped her and neither could not fall in love with each other. I really liked Mac and Darcy, and the plot was good.

I find myself getting very annoying and sick of the characters in her books. I think she was going for charming with little old naive, innocent Darcy, but she just came off being really annoying and stupid. The way she talked was so aggravating-she would go into detail about the smallest of things, and it was really creepy how she would describe things and notice things.
For example, she goes into particular detail describing the relationship between Mac's mom and dad, like how they're so intimate when they're touching each other in public, and how his mom hugged his grandpa and they seemed to mean everything to each other in that one moment. And I'm just sitting there wondering who in the hell has those thoughts when you're watching someone hug. It was downright creepy.
And it was extremely disgusting how "fascinated" she was with every freakin thing she saw. It was absolutely disgusting how she insisted on watching the exotic dancers with Mac, and how if he wasn't going to take her she would just go by herself. Um, eww. And then after she watched them perform on the poles, she's completely fascinated (there that word is again) and says it's been the best day of her life. She goes ahead and describes their outfits and how FASCINATING it was and the whole time I'm wondering why Mac doesn't find that a bit odd.
I felt like I was reading about an alien that visited earth for the first time and was just discovering very simple things like drinking and eating and shopping for clothes. Darcy came off as a complete idiot that didn't know anything, had no back-bone and was completely naive about everything.

What a fun, sweet and heart warming read. This is real feel good book. Darcy Wallace is from small town Kansas. She has packed a suitcase, withdrawn what little money she had in the bank and has hit the road to Vegas. She had lost her job and had given her ring back to her oppressive fiancee. Her purse gets stolen and her car breaks down. She ends up walking into Vegas with $9.37 in her pocket. She is alone, naive and has nothing else to lose. She is in awe of Vegas, the lights, the noise, the people and so many things she's never seen or experienced before. She goes into The Comanche Casino and looks around. She is drawn to a slot machine even though she'd never gambled in her life. The machine said JACKPOT $1,800,079.37 she thinks what an odd amount. Maybe it's a sign since $9.37 is how much money she has in her hand. She gambled, she wins and she promptly faints in the arms of the casino owner, Robert MacGregor, Blade, "Mac". In an instant her life has completely change and it doesn't take much for "Mac" to realize that Darcy needs to be protected from the media and from con-artists. Darcy soon finds herself in love with Mac and his entire family but will she be enough for a man that is custom to entertaining the more showgirl types. The type of woman that he doesn't have to put his heart on the line with. Winning the jackpot is just the beginning of Darcy's winning streak.

My favorite MacGregor story! Darcy Wallace is one of my absolute favorite heroines! She is a librarian (ahem) and she saves herself. This book could have easily gone the route of man rescues lady from her horrible financial situation but Darcy is the one who was brave enough (or foolish enough) to risk what little money she had on a turn of the wheel in Vegas. Then she took her stroke of good fortune and made it work for her. She is smart, hardworking, and seeing her character blossom through out the story is always so fun! Darcy Wallace didn’t want to marry Gerald so she stole away from Kansas in the dark of the night. She had her purse stolen in Utah so she only had $10 in her purse when her car breaks down outside of Las Vegas. Well she wasn’t going to let that stop her adventure, she grabs her tote and walks the mile to the city.

Romance! Nora Roberts at her signature finest

The Winning Hand is the 7th novel in Nora Roberts' The MacGregors series.

Darcy Wallace, the heroine, fled her home in Kansas to escape an emotionally abusive ex fiance who didn't take the word no when she said she doesn't want to marry him anymore. She ends up in Las Vegas at The Comanche casino where she spends her last money at a slot machine, hits the jackpot winning almost two million dollars suddenly becoming rich.

Robert MacGregor Blade, the hero is the eldest son of Justin and Serena from Playing the Odds. Mac manages The Comanche casino for his parents. He helps Darcy deal with her newfound riches and is smitten by her.

This is one of my favourite books in the series. I loved how Darcy found the strength and determined that she always had inside herself. She stopped hiding and stood up to her ex fiance. She knew exactly what she wanted from her relationship with Mac. I liked how Mac helped her when she was vulnerable and how he couldn't resist her when he pushed her away. Mac was a little stupid when it came to their relationship but it didn't take him long to understand he messed up and I thought he did an ok grovel.

Justin, Serena, Caine and Daniel make an appearance in the book. I enjoyed the sense of family and how Justin, Serena and Daniel nudged Darcy and Mac along.

I’ve been on a bit of a Nora Roberts Re-Reading Binge of late, and it has been totally awesome. As one of my favorite series by Roberts is her MacGregor series, I decided to re-read The Winning Hand, a short contemporary romance that I remembered little of. The Winning Hand was a good addition to the series, however it’s far from a favorite.

The Winning Hand starts off with Darcy, nearly completely broke and trying to start her life over after leaving her controlling ex-fiance in Kansas, winning over a million dollars in a casino in Las Vegas. And the owner of that Casino – Robert MacGregor Blade (Mac), a grandson of Daniel MacGregor.

Darcy was an easy character to like, although she was so very innocent that sometimes I would get a bit frustrated with her. This could be in part to the narration. While some of the narrator’s voices for characters were good, the voice she used for Darcy made her seem not very bright. However, Darcy does grow more confidence, and she’s a stronger woman by the end of the story, and I really enjoyed that.

The hero of the novel, Mac, was definitely a guy I liked, but not one that I loved. He really helps out Darcy in the beginning, and that’s wonderful. Because she’s so naïve, she needs all the advice she can get, and Mac helps her out. I did like them together, as well.

Daniel MacGregor, however, was my absolute favorite character in the novel, but that shouldn’t be too surprising to anyone who has been following my reviews. I do so love Daniel MacGregor, who is this wonderfully meddlesome patriarch of the McGregor family who loves everyone so very much.

I enjoyed revisiting The Winning Hand by Nora Roberts. While it isn’t a favorite, it was still entertaining. The narration was not a favorite, by Angela Dawe, and Darcy was a bit too innocent to even be quite believable, but I did like everyone. This review was originally posted on Quinn's Book Nook

Orjinal Adı:The Winning Hand olan Utangaç Milyoner'in Goodreads Puanı 5/4,10 Benim puanım 5/5 Serinin en beğendiğim romanlarından idi.

Darcy Wallace got tired of trying to convince her ex-fiance that he was really an ex. She packed her car and drove to Las Vegas. First her purse was stolen and then her car broke down about an hours walk from town. Some might see these things as bad omens but Darcy refuses to quit. She walks into town, strolls in to a casino, and plays practically her few dollars on a progressive slot machine. She's not even aware she won the jackpot when the lights and bells start. When the casino owner tells her she won nearly $2 million, she faints. When she regains consciousness, she is installed in a huge suite that the casino has comped her. As she waits to get her winning check, Mac, the casino owner, helps her with managing the press, finding an attorney, and considering options on life impacts from the winnings. Soon, Darcy is aware she is more interested in winning the heart of this dyed-in-the-wool bachelor.
The Macgregor romances are predictable but so is a meal at your favorite restaurant. Do expect a lovely romance that will make you laugh and cry which is Just what I want from a romance.

This is one of my favorite MacGregor novels. All of them are good, but this one has that little something.
I think the reason I love it because it touches that dream everyone has, about someday hitting Jackpot. Either at a Casino, or through a lottery ticket.
I loved following Darcy's transformation from the wreck she was at the beginning to the confident woman she was at the end. I smiled when she and Mac bantered, and argued.
I cheered for her when she decided to take her life into her own hands, and do what she had dreamed about.

What I liked most, was the romance between her and Mac. In some ways, it felt like an opposite attracts. Darcy is naive and innocent, Mac is cynical and experienced. There were times when I wondered if they would end up together, since Mac kept pushing her away.

What bothered me was the fact that most of the rocky parts was caused by Mac, and his reactions to Darcy's decision regarding important details in her new life. The reason this bothers me, is because I felt that Darcy just floated along sometimes.
