Being True

Rate this book
Nick inherited a love for the holidays from his mother—a warm, wonderful woman who accepted him for who he is and loved him anyway. But this year, she was taken from him, and now he must find a way to keep the promises he made to her: to enjoy the holiday, to be true to himself and who he is and to not let his non-accepting father make him miserable. Nick is determined to honor those promises this year.
But the grief is hard to counter, despite the efforts of his wonderful roommate and best friend, Liam. It’s Christmas Eve before Nick can bring himself to put up the tree. However, with Liam's support, they pull out the old ornaments from Nick's mom and get it decorated.
Just as they turn on the colorful lights on the tree, the power goes out. As they sit in front of a fire, trying to make the best of a miserable holiday, Nick wonders if he really has been living like his mother would want—beyond celebrating the holiday. He also wonders if she would really want him to ignore the man next to him and the feelings he’s been harboring for that man. Perhaps it’s time for him to take a step further to honor her wishes and finally be true to himself and who he is.

Grace Duncan grew up with a wild imagination. She told stories from an early age - many of which got her into trouble. Eventually, she learned to channel that imagination into less troublesome areas, including fanfiction, which is what has led her to writing male/male erotica.

A gypsy in her own right, Grace has lived all over the United States. She has currently set up camp in East Texas with her husband and children - both the human and furry kind.

As one of those rare creatures who loves research, Grace can get lost for hours on the internet, reading up on any number of strange and different topics. She can also be found writing fanfiction, reading fantasy, crime, suspense, romance and other erotica or even dabbling in art.

Being True has everything I could want in a (fairly secular) Christmas story. It's got just enough bitter to make the sweet feel so victorious, warm fuzzy feelings of coziness, a sweet budding friends-to-lovers romance, remembrance and honoring of loved ones, and an emphasis on being true to oneself. Don't expect a "homophobic family is surprisingly accepting" ending here... But Being True does have a happy ending, and to me feels largely positive. It's a lovely story, well written, and warmed me up on chilly days!

A sweet, short Christmas novella

Being True is a short Christmas novella, MM, friends-to-lovers about two young men who are good friends to start with but there's something else underneath. It comes to light during a shared Christmas during a power outage. Nick's gay and his father has pretty much rejected him and his mom passed away, the one who accepted him and tried to instill in him the art of accepting himself as he is and being true to that. His thoughts are very much in this and his own insecurities, and he's questioning whether he dares to find out if Liam shares his romantic feelings - which he does. Nick finds courage and the story has a HEA.

It's a nice, short, well-written novella for Christmas feels etc.

Sweet

This was a very sweet story set at Christmas. Even though it takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, it’s not really about Christmas. It’s about being true to yourself and accepting love.
