The advice women get surrounding negotiation is often contradictory, prescriptive, and occasionally downright insulting. You Got This provides a refreshing new take: women are actually highly effective negotiators and fully capable of navigating negotiations on their terms.
While it's conversational and playful in tone, this book is deeply grounded in the latest research and the author's ample experience as a professional negotiation coach for women.
For example - from Strategy 3: Do A Little Detective Work To Get To Know Your Counterpart - if a friend told you they wanted to set you up on a blind date with their cousin, what's the first thing you would do? Google the cousin, right? The same should apply to someone with whom you're negotiating. Getting to know your counterpart can help you decide how to approach the conversation based on their interests, what they value, and how they like to receive information.
You Got This operates from the premise that career advice is most effective when it's relatable, applicable to your life, and enjoyable to read. With anecdotes from the author's life and work with professional women to make scientific research accessible, readers will walk away with a sense of confidence and optimism along with 13 unique strategies for negotiation success.
Quick read with a lot of common sense things that I forget the moment the word "negotiate" it's thrown out. I really got sold about 3/4th through with "The advice 'Never bring your emotions into a negotiation' is as common as it is crappy and unrealistic." Through the end it tackled how to get through negotiations while maintaining your authentic self. Passing my copy to a co-worker tomorrow.
A quick, straightforward guide to negotiation for women. Part storytelling, part presentation, the book gives women great tools grounded in real-world experiences to better negotiate successfully. Rather than the standard advice to “leave emotion out of it,” You Got This invites women to see their emotions as strengths, and recognize how to use commonly undervalued skills such as empathy to their advantage. Also appreciated the prompts and notes sections throughout the book. This is great advice for inside and outside the workplace.
I had a chance to work with Lelia in real life, where she helped me to navigate a tricky work situation. Her wisdom in the moment was illuminating, and her book is filled with even more! This is an easy-to-read and practical guide that is filled with strategies that anyone could implement - but that we often don't think about or give ourselves the grace/permission to do so. Her advice isn't preachy; rather, reading this book simply feels like having a conversation with a friend who cares about you getting what you want - and deserve! Man or woman, professional or not, I think anyone could benefit from this book.
This book is a very enjoyable read. The author's authentic voice shines through. She takes a very intimidating subject, breaks it down in manageable chunks, and helps you realize that you already have everything you need to negotiate. Women, (and men) read this!
