I have a copy and honestly, it isn't that bad. Compared to other 80's misogyny stories, this one is actually kinda good.
If you collect NR you need this for the collection, if you are a fan of the old skool Harly's from the 70's and 80's, you will get a kick out of NR doing the AlphaHole H and TSTL doormat h - really this is just an extended old skool HP with a bit more sex thrown in, but it holds together well and it was fun. It does have a plot and it does make sense--but don't spend hundreds to get it, keep an eye out for used books stores and AMZN because I got mine for $15.00 at my local UBS and the guy felt he was overcharging.
No. Just no. Next to the ridiculous German title, I didn't like the book, I didn't like the people. It's not that the plot (or .. well the thing that could be called plot when you're a very nice person - which I am not) was bad or the writing style horrible.
It's just that.. I simply hated how I felt when I read this book. It's weird and a little hard to explain, but..
In this novel, the heroine is this very ambitious architect. She wants to leave a mark. The men, too, are very much like that. And they have this one character trait that I hate, simply hate, in our society.
The need to become immortal, to be the very best in what you do, to work and earn respect just to one day wake up and notice that your "immortality" and people's respect won't give you shit when you're alone and the mark you've left - and I'm talking about work here, not about the mark you leave on people - is worth nothing. Because you'll be dead.
Now, I'm not saying I hate people who want to achieve something in their lives. Everyone wants to - even if I often don't understand why. I'm not being childish. I just ask myself: Why? So you get more money? So mankind has a touchscreen refrigerator? That worth it? - but there are borders.
The other thing that's pissed me off is the "Every man is the architect of his own fortune./ Man forges his own destiny." thing. Not because of me, but because I see many people. People who try and who'd give everything to be what they think they should become. And they don't achieve it. Not because they didn't try and gave their best. They simply never stood a chance. (Starving kids to your left, everyone.)
Reading this book, all I thought was: Please don't let any of the readers believe something like that.
I don't say Roberts really wanted to express something like that, but it was still THERE and although there are thousands of books worse than this, although I actually liked some parts, the rating stays.
The relationship was just ridiculous. I couldn't take that seriously. So, she's in this new office, getting a job and there is this guy and they get the hotties, but she's then transfered to Paris. There is another guy and they, too, get involved. Although, a little more than she and guy one.
And then one of the guys is an asshole and the other one is, basically, too. When she finally sleeps with one of them he later decides she'd marry him. (Both of them do that, actually. But well..) Without any reason. He just decides that they need to get married. - As a usually empathetic or possibly even optimistic reader I sat there, touching my head, trying to get hold of the hilariously pathetic thing that took place there and failed. I just didn't get him, her, the story, the other people.
Or, if I got them, I thought it was all so .. constructed, wrong or plain stupid that I couldn't stand trying to get them even more than I already did.
So, in order to explain what I feel and think about this book I need to repeat myself: No. Just no.
The reason this book is so expensive is because Nora refuses to re-release it. She said it was the worst thing she has ever written. She was right. Still, I'm glad I got it because it completes my Nora collection.
Sarah is on vacation to finish her book. She meets Harris who has the decision to make about the old hotel they are staying at. These two, of course, have instant chemistry. Hijinx ensues and they end up in love. She's been hurt before and doesn't want to fall in love, but hey, when they are as good-looking as Harris how can you deny it? In the beginning, I was really digging this story. By the middle, it started to really slog down. I didn't like that he kept getting in her personal space when she said "no". As far as 80s romances go, Harris isn't too bad, but it isn't great either. I am excited to keep pushing through Nora Roberts' backlist.
This book is out of publication. Nora Roberts has said she didn’t like the writing in this book and she will NEVER release it for publication again. I found the story line weak as well. I didn’t really like this story line and I can see how Nora herself didn’t like it. Thus book wasn’t her best and she knew it right off. If you want this book you can get it off of EBay for around $50.00-$100.00. It’s pricey, but if you are a fan and want it in your library then I’m sure there are other places you maybe can purchase.
I was a huge NR fan in the late 90s early 2000s. Imagine my surprise when I came across the most coveted title sitting on top of a $20 grab bag at a used bookstore. I was ecstatic. Then I read the book. It is absolute garbage. Neither character has any redeeming qualities. I was actively hoping for both to die horrible, awful deaths. It is completely understandable that the author refusing to have it rerelease. Luckily, I put the book on eBay and it went for 9x what I paid for the whole bag.
Since when this book has been deluding me and I want to really read it very badly. How to go about it.even when I click on it it does not open. How to go about it.please any one help me hi charu nice to know u have read this book please let me know how to go about it I am a great fan of n r.hence this book is really giving me kadukka.
Konnte es nicht zu Ende bringen. Eine toxischere Liebesbeziehung habe ich ja noch nie gehört. Nicht zu empfehlen wenn man sich von toxischen Beziehungen fernhalten will.
I remember being so excited when I finally got my copy of this book - I thought I was bound to find a hidden treasure that Nora Roberts simply hadn't felt as sure of. Fortunately for her, she made the smart decision not to republish this book. Unfortunately for me, that means I spent a lot of money on a hard-to-find book that, honestly, wasn't that good.
Now don't get me wrong: I love Nora Roberts, and while this wasn't her best effort, it certainly was far from her worst (personally, I think that honor goes to Divine Evil). But I do understand why she chose not to republish; the hero, unlike so many well-rounded, charming, and kind-hearted men that she writes, is really kind of a bully.
I understand that times were different when this book was written, and I do give credit to Nora for writing a heroine with a job, but Sarah's romance radar doesn't seem to be setting off alarms in either direction - for her other love interest who seems to be (spoiler-alert) screaming "I'm a villain!" or for token love interest Byron. I say token because, while Nora makes it clear that he loves her, she doesn't exactly make it clear why. Byron seems to think Sarah's an idiot for most of the book. And frankly, after some of the decisions she makes, I agree.
Overall, I think the book was well-written, but not up to Nora's standard with regard to some of my favorites of her heroes and heroines. I'm glad I read it, but I wouldn't recommend anyone else go out of their way to get their hands on it.
First book of Nora's which has only one perspective. All her other books I have read so far, have perspective of every character she creates. Wish she had put Harris views in this beautiful story. Harris comes off as a dominant and control freak.
***putting out the request on Goodreads, this book is next to impossible to find, so if you have it, please let me know! I will pay shipping to and from (meaning it will be returned to you), I just want to read it.***
