Dr. Jules Montgomery needed a hero for just one night. Dane Andrews, Boss to the men who know him, had only one rule--never mess with any woman in his home town. All it took was her arms wrapped around his neck, and her soft, warm lips caressing his ear as she whispered, "Help a girl out. Your name's Gary, and you're my boyfriend." Boss quickly stepped into the role of hero and fantasy boyfriend, finding it impossible to say no to the mesmerizing beautiful redhead. He played Gary to her Red. For one night only, they belonged to each other.
Five years later, fate and a redheaded four-almost five-year-old reunite them once again. Life has gone on, although neither has forgotten the other. Jules returns to her home town to reconcile with her aunt, only to discover that her aunt is the housekeeper to Boss, a man with an occupation that goes against everything Jules holds dear. Boss is considered a hero by those who know him, although he now needs a service dog by the name of Lucky to keep him safe. Together, man and dog, become the heroes that Jules needs once again to keep her and her daughter safe for more than one night.
Author of hot and spicy contemporary romance with a touch of country. Born a city girl but raised country, I am a dairy farmer who also enjoys a taste of city life every once in a while. My family and our life on the farm are my inspiration and my joy.
Other than writing, my interests are music, movies, live theatre, reading, travelling and watching the news and binge-watching a variety of shows.
My writing focuses on romance, however, I read most fiction genres. Paranormal romance and comedic fiction are my focus at the moment.
I keep my book reviews short and sweet - no storytelling in the review. I rate them as a beach read since most of my reading happens at the beach.
Boss is a work of contemporary romance which forms the first novel of the Game Changer series, and it was penned by author Deborah Armstrong. In this passionate but also heartwarming romantic tale, the events centre around our heroine Dr. Jules Montgomery and the titular Boss – a tough guy whom she meets on a night when she wants to pretend that she has a boyfriend just for one night. The pair reunite several years later, when Jules has a lovely little girl in tow, but knowing each other in the real world is far from the fantasy they once shared. So begins a tale of real romantic bonding in a complicated world.
One of the things which impressed me most about author Deborah Armstrong was her attention to detail in the realistic motivation of her characters when they act. So many romance novels simply fit the mould and follow the plot with characters whose actions we might not buy into, but Boss and Jules both follow their own realistic agendas, and that it makes it all the more complex as their feelings for one another grow and changes with the circumstances of the plot. This results in a highly emotive but also relatable storyline which grounds the romance and makes the characters feel like real people, whose dramas, highs and lows we can follow passionately. The dialogue too smacks of reality, for not everything is happy in love, and overall this makes Boss one of the most satisfying romance reads for me, and a promising start to a new series.
I'm normally not a romance reader, but I was fortunate to meet Deborah in person and just had to read this book when I read the tagline: Can a woman love a man who goes against everything she believes in? Dane and Jules had a one-night stand 5 years before Jules runs into him again courtesy of her Aunt Val. Toss in a feisty 4 almost 5 year old (no spoiler there, it's on the book jacket!) and a support dog named Lucky, and you have a heartwarming novel set during the holiday season. As always, there are moments I wanted to smack a character upside the head, but that's all part of the genre! A well-written, delightful read. Boss is the first book in the Game Changer series and I'm looking forward to reading future books in this series! Especially since Book 2 features Dane's strong, silent assistant, Bates.
Deborah Armstrong explores new avenues with her military romance novel, Boss (Game Changer Book 1). Dane Andrews has retired from the Special Elite when he started a business of his own. Not your conventional business, but one that rescues women and children from human trafficking and slavery in foreign countries. Once in a while, he and his team are called on by our own country for a special assignment. Doctor Jules Montgomery enters Danes life one night while trying to avoid a stalking co-worker. One evening together changed both of their lives. By chance they meet up again five years later, only now they have to face the reality that she is now a mother and his occupation as a sniper doesn't agree with her morals. The spark between them is only stronger; can they find a common ground to build upon?
Boss (Game Changer Book 1) by Deborah Armstrong has a unique twist as she includes a character that needs a service dog. She incorporates the multiple uses and needs a service dog would fulfill without making the character appear weak. The pace steadily moves between Dane and Jules as they reveal the feelings they have now for each other and their remembrance of the perfect date they had as a mystery couple. I love how they each have baggage in their life that needs to be resolved and the growth they make to overcome differences. The Christmas theme adds a magical touch, while the skills of a Special Elite soldier make all the difference in this sweet romance. This is the kind of book that takes you into the lives of others, while reminding you about the imperfections in all our lives.
Review written by Peggy Jo Wipf for Readers' Favorite.
Sitting at the bar of his club, Dane, is surprised when a woman comes up behind him, puts are arms around him, gives him a hug, and whispers in his ear, “play along, your name is Gray.” So he goes along with it. Turns out the woman he calls Red because of the color of her hair has a unwanted guy from work stalking her.
Even after the guy leaves Red and Gray spend the evening and night together for one perfect date night they both remember.
Five years later Dane discover who Red is along with another surprise.
This is a fun story with very likable, true to life characters.
I was so taken by these characters - midway through the book they began to feel like friends. What can I say about the story? It's not a cookie-cutter romance, rather one that is just different enough to capture and hold my attention. This is my first time reading this author, but it certainly won't be the last.
