The Redemption

Rate this book
A Saturday in September was typical for Police Chief Mike Burdick. Then all hell broke loose. Two men were shot dead as they sat in their pickups.

A few hours later, two detectives were shot in a popular hotel. In the blink of an eye, Burdick had three homicides on his hands. Making matters worse, evidence pointed to a serial killer. The chief needed help.

Special Agent Riley O'Connor was asked to cut short her vacation. O’Connor and former boxer Jack Beckett had solved other complicated cases. Still, the situation in Santa Cruz would turn out to be a challenge. Hours after O'Connor arrived, someone tried to kill her.

With time running out, O’Connor and Beckett made a fast trip to Reno to interview a detective who worked on a 20-year-old case. At the same time, it became clear there wasn't one serial killer; there were two. Beckett and O’Connor race back to Santa Cruz to prevent a third killing, but before they can make an arrest, a bloody shootout takes place in the hills above Santa Cruz. Can Beckett save O'Connor a second time and still take down both serial killers?

Praise for Jack Beckett Adventures. “Jack Beckett reminds me of Jack Reacher. If you enjoy lots of action and adventure, read D.G. Baxter’s books.” – Terry “The Beckett series is one of the best ever. I really need more. I can’t get enough of the characters and especially the banter.” – GMR

This is book eleven of the Jack Beckett Adventures series and is the first book I have read by this author. A police chief asks for FBI assistance after two men are shot in their trucks, whilst in isolated car park locations. It seems they have been drawn into the site of their execution by nefarious means and the police have found no clues left behind. When the police follow up one lead, from a letter, two police officers are shot at in a seedy hotel. Police Chief Mike Burdick needs some extra help, as events seem to be escalating. There is a cop killer out there as well as a serial killer and they may be one and the same!

Special Agent Riley O’Connor is the agent chosen to assist and knows the area well from a previous case. She has to cut short her holiday but was getting antsy anyway, so is glad to be back at work after her last trying case and enforced break. Her friend and someone she has worked with on other cases, Jack Beckett, was also ending his holiday and she had hoped to meet up with him. There is a bit of possible romance, in the friend zone at the moment, but escalating feelings are drawing them towards a more intimate relationship, if either can get over the barriers they have up around that part of their lives.

Riley gets a supposed clue and when she follows up, feels herself being followed or watched, just a strange sense that someone is after her and she is walking into a trap. Hours after starting the case in Santa Cruz, someone has tried to kill her. Beckett gets her to let him follow her and keep an eye out at a late night meet at a deserted lighthouse, where it soon becomes obvious that there is more than one serial killer out there! Investigations about two of the dead men brings out a connection from their past. A quick trip to Reno to visit a detective about a twenty year old case, soon leads Riley and Beckett closer to one of the killers and the reasons behind the killings.

The cop killings on the other hand, seem to have no rhyme or reason behind them and clues are more haphazard, but made easier to track down as the killer takes more and more chances. Riley and Beckett find out a third man is likely to be targeted and race back to Santa Cruz to try and stop it happening. They are too late and end up at a mountain top secluded house, but before they can make an arrest in one case, a bloody shootout occurs. Can Beckett save Riley once more? Or will the forces they are fighting against be too much for them to contain?

An intriguing case of cat and mouse with good, hopefully prevailing against the separate threads of evil attacking them. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series and wish I knew more about how Beckett came to be involved in these types of cases with Riley, but I have found another author to follow and now catch up on the other books in the series! An interesting crime thriller with a good set of main characters and I shall await the next in series to see what becomes of their relationship and what happens to them next. I received and ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Roger is a man who does not understand NO. Exercising that lack of judgement against a classmate shortly before graduating from the Police Academy washes him out. He has been a bit hotheaded and off the rails since. Brother Darrell seems to get dragged through the mud on cleanup duty along the way.

Jack Beckett is a retired pro boxer who inherited substantial sums from his mostly estranged deceased father. O’Connor is an FBI agent Beckett shares close ties with. The two have worked together to help resolve a few cases and help each other and some other folks along the way.

Molly McDonald had a sister who killed herself after a brutal rape. Molly seems set on vengeance

These folks collide in dangerous and sometimes lethal ways with a few other key players, others who become collateral damage along the way.

Intense suspense, thriller, action and romance

This is really interesting, because Beckett and Oconnor are definitely involved, but not the focus. Two killers, Molly and Roger, are. How they are connected, is pretty complicated, because Molly just wants justice for her sister, who committed suicide, due to being raped. Roger just likes to kill cops. Roger is also stalking Molly and neither one knows that the other is a killer. If you can unravel this one, you are doing well.

Beckett still good

I like all the Beckett books and I think the books are getting better. The story is interesting and moves along at a good pace. I didn't give this five stars because I thought the interaction between two serial killers perhaps a bit too much. That said, it is fiction and many good fictional books have implausible scenarios. The book is definitely worth reading and I think you will enjoy it.

The Redemption is Book 11 in the Jack Beckett series and is a must-read.

This fast-paced, action-packed thriller starts with seemingly random killings and the police end up bringing in Special Agent Riley O’Connor, so Jack Beckett is soon to follow. This compelling page-turner has murder, suspense, intrigue, and shootouts with serial killers.

I cannot wait to read more books in this amazing series.

Suspenseful story all the way. Two serial killers on the loose, how will the case be solved. So gripping, you won’t even notice when you get to the end.
