Blood Brothers is Book 1 of the Dragon Wars fantasy series written by Craig Halloran. The story of two blood brothers, one elf, the other human, immediately should strike the reader as fertile soil for sword and sorcery, fantasy, action adventure. Because it is the first story of a series, not everything (in fact very little, although there is some foreshadowing) is revealed in the book.

The brothers are Greycloak, an elven rogue, while Dyphestive is a strong human fighter. They have remained hidden on a farm but have been itching for adventure. The owner does not wish to lose her workers, so she has saddled them with debt that they almost surely will never be able to repay. Eventually, they find a way to escape and join a group of adventurers.

Of course, there is more to the plot than I have communicated. I thought it was more important to give essentials and tease story elements. For anyone familiar with dungeon crawls in multiplayer, roleplay, gaming modules, the book moves similar to a gaming scenario. There are numerous characters introduced with varying disparate motivations and the reader is only given tidbits of information.

I'm not really sure how I feel about reading this type of book, but since I acquired the first five, I believe that should give me a sufficient entry into the world Halloran has created. For now, I'm sufficiently intrigued to continue to explore along with these characters.

Exciting adventure fantasy

This is a beginning of an exciting adventure. It ends in quite the cliffhanger. I liked that I could folliw along with the world-building without a huge learning curve.

Follow these Blood Brothers to action and adventure!

So, here I am, deep in the first volume of a brand new series by the inimitable Craig Halloran. Having read Halloran's fabulous The Darkslayer Omnibus series and most of his Nath Dragon books, I know well what to expect. Finely drawn, debatably likeable main characters. Non-stop, rolicking action. Twists, turns, and unexpected plot gyrations.

Craig started writing this series just a short time ago and is already writing volume three as I approach the middle of volume one. I have been reading novels and long series in this genre for many years, now, and I can authoritatively say that Halloran is possibly unequalled when it comes to his speed at writing complex, engrossing, and riveting fast-action fantasy prose.

Oh, and let me not forget the villains! I have huge respect for master sword and sorcery author Craig Halloran, but let me be quick to point out that, personally, I would not want to be caught up inside his imaginative head. Why not? Because there are some really intense imaginary villains lurking in there! Maybe that's why he writes so fast, to chase them out of his head and onto paper and digital media. The villains in Blood Brothers are perfect examples of what I mean.

I do not want to reveal any plot spoilers in this review. Here, I will just report that some years ago, I spent a lot of time with a group of brilliant and ingenious people who excelled at Dungeons and Dragons. We created not only fictional dungeons but also fantasy worlds and even entire sci-fi planetary systems. Then, we formed groups of fictional characters to adventure in each others nefarious creations. Over time, we developed a team of characters that could handle just about any dungeon master's challenges. Now, to get back to the point, Craig Halloran creates worlds and villains and challenges that would have scared the heck out of any of our D & D exploring parties.

So, now that I have finished Blood Brothers, I can tell you it has been a serious romp. The real adventures are just beginning. So, here is where you can find me. I'll be seated at a table at the back of the Red Claw Tavern, mug of grog in hand, waiting excitedly to see what happens in volume two!

In summary, Blood Brothers and the rest of Halloran's new Dragon Wars series are strongly recommended!

Blood Brothers: Dragon Wars-Book 1 - a review by Rosemary Kenny

An exciting dungeons and dragons adventure, Blood Brothers is Book 1 in Craig Halloran's Dragon Wars: A Dragon Riders Fantasy Adventure, about the eponymous blood brothers, Grey Cloak the elf thief and Dysphetive, a rather slow-witted human, who provides the brawn to Grey Cloak's cunning and quick wits.
As the adventure begins, the hapless duo are prisoners of the kobolds and gnolls in a dungeon, with a crazy-seeming hermit-like man who says he's the King, yet insists on staying in the dank, gloomy cell while the pair escape. He suggests a quest for them once they get to freedom - then raises the alarm!

What does Dysphetive do to free them both from their bonds?
How does Grey Cloak react to the locked door?
When does Dysphetive free the horses - and what delays him?
Where does Grey Cloak hide? How does he retrieve his cloak and boots?
What other contraband do the pair escape with?

There's lots of action, laughs, fights, danger, wit and a secret quest, which is a great start to this epic series, that's sure to have plenty of fans among afficionados of The Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons and other tales of quests and derring-do.
It will also make you forget about your Covid-19 fears and Lockdown Blues, as you delight in Craig Halloran's Blood Brothers.
Fly to your online bookstore and make off with a great 'booty' of a book, as soon as possible!

I didn't know what to expect but the description sounded great. When I started reading and the characters were called Grey Cloak and Dyphestive I almost quit reading. What is that? I'm still confused. Also the story plops you right into the action. Were these characters in a previous book? Maybe I should have looked that up.

Anyway G.C. and Dy ( I refuse to keep typing those names) are blood brothers, not brothers by blood. G.C. is a frivolous wanderlust ridden, treasure seeking half elf, and Dy is a laid back go with the flow human with what seems to be super human strength. No back story. I'm sure this has to be my fault.

These two are quite the duo and the sucked me in. They play off of each really well. I feel like I know them or really want to.

They get themselves mixed up in a lot of trouble over and over. There are a lot of people mixed up in their adventure. Rhonna a half dwarf who was like a foster mother to them, a female dragon rider who isn't a Dragon Rider, and the new group they are about to go into battle with to fight goblins.

Speaking of which, ending the book just a a huge battle is about to take place? For real?Who does that?

I'm interested to see where G.C. and Zora go. I'm interested to see if Dy and the other chick end up together. I'm interested in how much longer they go by G.C. and Dy because these are not names.

Listened to audio narrated by Lee Alan. Easy listen. Sound effects were just okay for me.

Grey Cloak is a half-elf rogue, determined to find adventure.

Dyphestive is an incredibly strong human fighter, content to follow where Grey Cloak leads.

These two are both fifteen and sworn blood brothers. They've been hiding on a farm but have decided to seek other adventures that land them in even more danger than they started.

A little to campy for me, I didni't really like these characters, I wanted more depth but it often felt like scenes were created then stitched together.

A simple, easy read, dungeons and dragons story with a to be continued ending.

Excellent

Fantastic and very well written. You ought to put For all readers, not just teens. I know there is a bit of sweetness that -apparently isn't allowed in adult books- I just enjoy a really good story well told. This is exactly that. I don't want grim violence rapes all that awful stuff. I also can't stand romances genre style. A bit in a story fine. Its so hard to find books, I've read every mystery known to man kind. The the cozy books, there are some great books that get tossed in that category. There are many good books I'm not being fair. The write for cosy bunch formulaic books though are often, really bad. Know your audience, apparently it's not very bright girly girls. Oh well. Its a challenge. Thanks so much, these a wonderful top notch reading

A Good Start to a 20 Book Series

Introducing Grey Cloak and Dyphestive, an elf rogue and a human fighter, both on the cusp between teenager and adulthood. There is something different about them, possibly. They are hiding secrets from their early teen years, and are being hunted by evil. They join a group of adventurers and interesting things begin to happen. I have been waiting since this book was released and gradually purchasing each volume, upon release. Now, finally, I have begun the quest to read them back to back. This promises to be a great story, though not up to the standard of Tolkien but very little meets that standard. I finished this riveting book in less than five hours including a supper break. I recommend this quick but attention gripping story.

Very Readable

This epic fantasy story tells the story of two "brothers" off in search of adventure. They find it in spades and in doing so take the reader on a wild ride that leaves the reader glued to the pages in the small hours of the morning.

The author does a skillful job of characterising his characters, fleshing them out until they feel real and adding depth to his writing in the process. This definitely adds charm -or irritation- to the story as characters come to life and don't necessarily fall into the predictable mould the reader expects.

All in all a nice clean read suitable for all ages. Recommended.

Grey Cloak and his blood brother travel to several places, intending to join Talon. Along the way, they have numerous encounters and a few battles.

This Dragons & Mythical Creatures Fantasy is intriguing. It reads like awkward LitRPG. Nonetheless, the adventures are amusing. I wonder how it will play out in future titles.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Tragic. Unpredictable. Whimsical. Wonderful characters.

Dragon Wars

Craig Halloran has created another sci-fi fantasy hit with the Dragon War series! Just finished book one ,Blood Brothers and was immediately captivated by the story line suggesting that there is more to them that is being shared right now! The story is well-written as all of his books are and as the tale weaves I found my self more involved in the adventure! Thankfully Book 2 will be out in a couple of weeks! Great job!

This has a well written storyline and a cast of characters that make this series starter a compelling read.
What a pair it seems trouble should be their last name they seem to be able to get into or attract it .!!
It's difficult to say anything about the story without giving spoilers,
so if you like this genre or just looking because you like this author I would suggest you get this brilliant book .
Totally recommended

A fast-paced fantasy story with shallow characters and limited prose depth. Each chapter is extremely simplistic and the characters lack sufficient emotion, leaving the reader wondering. The plot is also mundane and doesn't seem to lead anywhere. Despite this, the high action and comic scenes shore up the story's shortcomings, leading to a decent read for any fantasy fan.

This book was a run of the mill fantasy book with several fantasy tropes. You have a found family, a quest, dragons, wizards, and good vs. evil. The main characters are two opposites with one seeking riches and adventure and the other is just tagging along. The book ends in a cliff hanger making the reader ready to jump to the next book. I didn’t hate this book but I didn’t love it either.

Interesting storyline

Interesting storyline that started slow but continued to move forward with twists and turns as treachery abounds while the lives of the "brothers" are intertwined.

A good book to read.

The book takes you in many different directions and they seem to get trouble when things were going good. The author did a good jobs with the book, they keep you wondering what will happen next and how are they going to get out of trouble. Good jobs.

A L ways can depend on a good book from C. Halloran

Good first book in a series. Always lots of fun and fighting with great characters. It is good to see very little prejudice between the species, we should all take a hint.

Not the kind of book I normally read but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I did kind of get into it towards the end and it was better than I thought initially. Recommend reading if this what you like to read.

I really wanted to like this because A) Dragons B) West Virginia Author, but I just wasn't a fan.

It felt very all over the place at times, and I wondered at first if maybe it would be more suited to a younger audience, that is until the scene where a man slaps a tavern wench on the behind as she passes by.

Some of the characters, including (okay, mostly) Grey Cloak, were completely insufferable, and had no redeemable qualities or arcs to hint at a a change.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't for me and I won't be continuing the series.
