Rate this book

This is a Children's book that I read to my twin boys. I really found this book to be so cute, and my boys really enjoyed it. I have grown carrots with my boys, and they found this story to be funny. I loved the ending of this book. I found the pictures of this book to be cute. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

Najkrajšia súčasná slovenská detská kniha. Má všetko, čo má detská kniha mať - postupný príbeh s opakujúcimi sa prvkami, prekvapenie, vtip a úžasné ilustrácie. Nikdy ma neomrzí ju deťom čítať.

A gardener sees a little green plant growing in his rose garden. No matter how he waters it or tends to it, the plant does not bloom. Little does he know that underground a massive carrot is growing down into a rabbit hole. The rabbits have a grand feast, eating most of the carrot. What will the gardener say when he finds out the truth?

This is such a cute book! I actually laughed out loud when I read the ending. It's so clever and fun!

The illustrations are so hilarious and adorable. I love the cute bear gardener and the wild rabbits. Every page is full of color and energy, and I love that the designs are fairly simple but dramatic.

What a delightful book!

Everything about this book is so darn cute. I love it when characters are confused and attempt to adjust reality to their expectations instead of doing it the other way around. The ending is simply hilarious.

No joo, ihan kiva. Odotin ehkä jotain vähän hauskempaa osuutta niille maan alla asuville kaneille, nyt se asetelma tuntui jotenkin raa'alta: maan päällä pieni karhu maanittelee porkkanan yläosaa kukkimaan ja pitää siitä hyvää huolta, vie unilelunkin kainaloon... Ja maan alla kanit raatelevat itse porkkanaa ihan houreessa!

En tiedä. Minusta tuo oli jotenkin tosi makaaberi asetelma. :D

Myös loppu oli ihan pöhkö.

UPSIDE DOWN is a comical picture book about a bear and a rabbit. The story is told from the perspective of the bear who is trying to grow a plant. However, no matter what they do to the plant, it just won't bloom. The bear waters it, gives it light, tea, and covers it in shade when it is sunny. Meanwhile, wordlessly, a rabbit discovers the huge carrot growing underneath and getting bigger, realizing how good it is to eat. The rabbit shares with other rabbits and eats it up to the stalk. The book ends with the bear pulling it out and thinking that it had been growing upside down.

What I loved: This is a clever and silly story about a bear who is trying to get a carrot to bloom and does not realize how much there is going on underneath the ground. The text is simple and relatively short with the rabbit's story being told only through the images below ground. Children who understand about carrots will giggle along as they see the bear puzzling about the carrot plant and the rabbit enjoying the fruits (or veggies, in this case) of his labor.

The illustrations are clever and simple, giving the two stories along the way, with a view of both above and below ground. The jokes will work better for preschoolers and young elementary school aged readers who understand how carrots grow, so they can better appreciate the humor. The font is clear and easy to read with only a couple sentences on each page.

Final verdict: UPSIDE DOWN is a silly and fun picture book about persistence and gardening. Recommend for preschool and elementary school aged readers who can giggle along with the illustrations.

Originally published in Czechoslovakia, this picture book offers a unique perspective on gardening as well as on making the best of an unexpected situation or outcome. When a bear finds a strange green plant that resists all his efforts to get it to bloom just like all the other flowers in his garden, he doesn't give up. Instead, he lavishes plenty of TLC on the plant, watering it, making sure it has just the right amount of light, and even shielding it from too much harsh sunlight. Why, he even makes sure to tell it goodnight. Still, his efforts seem fruitless--at least to him--since it seems the plant isn't budging. However, the cutaway illustrations show that his efforts have come to fruition as the plant he thinks is a flower is actually a carrot, and below the ground a burrow of bunnies is having the feast of their lives now that the carrot has grown to an enormous size. In fact, they consume so much of the carrot that they end up with bellyaches. Determined to get to the bottom of the plant's problem, the bear digs it up, flips it upside down, and blames the lack of blooms on its having grown in the wrong direction. Now that it's right side up, it looks a lot more like the other blossoms in his garden. Who knows how long the carrot will last in its new position, but at least the gardener is pleased that his plant has blossomed. Youngsters will be entertained by the images on each page that show what's happening above ground and below ground simultaneously as well as the enormity of that carrot.

Kok Tidak Berbunga? [Why Won't You Flower] || Katarina Macurova || Penerjemah : Muhammad Fahmi Lubis || Penerbit Bhuana Ilmu Populer - HOMPIMPA || 25 Hlm || 2016, Albatros Media/Katarina Macurova | 2024, Penerbit BIP

An adorable little bear finds a new type of plant in his rose garden. He is confused as to what it might be and how it got there. He adopts it as his own and tenderly cares for it daily but the new plant won't bloom no matter how much TLC he bestows upon it.

Many rabbits reside underneath the ground of bear's garden and they get to witness and interact with the downside of this strange plant. They are excited because it truly isn't a flowering rose at all but a HUGE, yummy, mouthwatering, CARROT. YES!!!!
Party time in their burrow!

This parallel story will have kids following the duplicity of the tale and loving it. The illustrations show perspective and are a wonderful tool to teach the concepts of up and down, and over and under. The tale is told with humour and has a very happy ending for all the book's characters. It lends itself to be a perfect read aloud for that age group. I love the the book and highly recommend it.

This was an adorable story providing multiple perspectives. This book follows the growth of a carrot from above the ground and below the ground. Throughout the story the bear, who is also acting h as the main narrator for the story, does not know why this plant will not grow like the others. Through his perspective we can see and read about his thoughts and actions. While he is trying to figure out the problem the reader is provided illustrations as to what is going on below ground. This book is a great book to have in a class library to teach multiple perspectives. There are opportunities for students to work in groups, partners, and independently. They can discuss or work on solving the problem from bears end, also discussing what effect would happen or are happening. Various language arts lessons can be taught off this one book and it is a great resource to be added to any library.

Quietly bonkers, when all is said and done, this features a character finding a plant in his garden that won't bloom. Feeding it, nurturing it – giving it a cuddly rabbit to sleep with at night, for heaven's sake – doesn't help. Partly because it's a carrot, and there is a humongous root hanging down underneath it into a cave of real rabbits, who are going to have an orgy of carrot shavings eating until they're stuffed. Simple presentation, with a view of the whole drama that only changes when absolutely necessary, adds to the comedy of the rabbits doing their thing under the feet of the oblivious gardener. That said, whimsy like this is hard to give a fully positive rating for – does this deserve multiple reads? No, but it will be most pleasant for at least one.

This is a story of a small bear gardener who finds a new plant amongst his roses. Though try as they might, they cannot get the new plant to bloom!

Meanwhile, it turns out the new plant isn’t a flower at all but a carrot! As the gardener carefully tends to his plant, the rabbits who live below have grown more excited by the day!

I really enjoyed the illustration style of this book, especially the humorous way in which the rabbits are depicted underneath the soil. The vocabulary is simple enough for young readers, and the illustrations will keep a child entertained throughout.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Albatros publishing for the opportunity to read and review this upcoming story,

Upside Down
4.5 Stars

This is a cute little picture book with a silly twist! It's for young readers, such as preschoolers or kindergartners.

Our teddy bear gardener is trying everything to make sure his plants are happy. He shows great patience and determination to get his lovely flowers to bloom. I enjoyed the simple art style, and bright color & cheerful illustrations; Teddy bears gardening above ground, and the silly bunny family living in a burrow, under teddy's garden. I'd recommend this book for the pre-k class room, or a great book for any young children's library.

Thank you, NetGalley and Albatros Media, for an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is so cute! Two stories are told in parallel--above ground a young gardener does their best to foster an odd plant that just won't bloom. They try everything they can think of, only to get a big surprise at the end! At the same time, rabbits living below ground rejoice in the big, healthy carrot growing down into their den. The below ground story is told without words, so kids can be engaged by asking them what they think is happening, how the rabbits feel, what they might do, etc. This is a fun story about perspective that will keep kids interested and encourage them to think of things from multiple perspectives.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Upside Down by Katarina Macurova

When the Bear discovers a strange plant in his garden and takes care of it, he becomes puzzled as to why it doesn't bloom. All while his plant isn't blooming from his point of view, it is growing pretty massively underground from some else's point of view.

This is an adorable story. I love the story line and the authors writing style. The illustrations for the picture book are beyond cute and simple, they don't overshadow the story.

Thank you NetGalley and Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Upside Down is a cute and brief tale of a diligent bear tending to his plants who finds himself vexed by a strange new arrival in his garden that hides a secret and vibrant life under the surface. Humorous cross section art shows the bear watering the plant tea and reading to it while underground, a group of rabbits engages in mischief.

Entertaining and fun!

A gardener does not know the wonderful plant he has in his garden. Under the ground a rabbit family celebrates the growth of a large carrot. It shows perspective, and looking at things in different ways. great for children and teacher to help with concepts of up and down, over and under. and the idea that we don't always see things as they really are until we look closer.

Picture book. This is a cute, short gardening story about a bear that is trying to understand an odd plant in the garden. All of the other plants bloom, but this one only has green leaves. The bear is unaware that beneath the soil a carrot is growing and the rabbit family is preparing for a feast. The bear generously nurtures the plant along despite not seeing the bloom. The ending is very cute!

Thanks to Netgalley and Albatros Media for a free digital copy.

A very funny book about a teddy bear trying to do the best for his plant. While under the plant a family of rabbits is reaping the rewards of the large carrot the bear doesn't know he is growing! The illustrations are charming and the text is minimal to let the illustrations do all the heavy lifting.
