I wish I’d had this book when I was a teenager, 16 year old Aimee desperately needed this! I picked this up in between my normal reading when I was feeling down and it really did cheer me up. A little cringe in parts but overall it made me feel super empowered and I know I’ll be coming back to read certain parts when I’m feeling low again!
A feel-good book and autobiography by that sunny 20-something instagram friend. Full of body positivity and cheer, and a strong focus on social media, the audiobook is very manageable at around 4 hours (and narrated by the author), but it does miss a lot of the lovely illustrations included in the hardback edition.
I love a good female empowerment book, and decided to read this after following Chessie on Instagram for a while. I think it is definitely more suitable for younger audience - reading it as an almost 25 year old, it felt a little immature in regards to both the tone of the writing and the content. It was a good feel good book and very quick to read (you could easily read this in 1-3 days). It had some good ideas surrounding social media but most was just the usual body confidence info which isn’t new! I would definitely recommend as a book to give to younger people to read coming through puberty or just after but maybe give is a miss if you’re older.
What a great book! I am already my friend but after this book I am slowly getting my own best friend. It felt like a friend is talking to me. It was such a fun to read through it. It helped me to understand myself more and that things not only happen to me but to everyone. The book also helps to understand other woman a little more. I can fully recommend this book x
Do you feel like you want a life coach but can’t afford it? Buy this book. (It’s only $5 on Audible and I highly recommend hearing the author read it because her delivery is equally warm and hilarious.)
I don’t usually do chick lit but this is my FAV because Chessie is a relentlessly enthusiastic champion of positivity and inclusion. It’s quite short, but filled with lots of helpful advice on friendships, dealing with conflict, sticking up for yourself, and changing the inner dialog we have about our bodies and our worth. This book reminds me of a more grown up version of “The Care and Keeping of You” from American Girl (another gem).
I cracked up many times reading this, especially during her impressions of busy influencers and their girl boss meetings, “SWIPE UP FOR TICKETS!” She’s refreshingly down to earth and I feel like I could totally call her up for a chat after reading this.
Every girl should read this book. Bigging yourself up and appreciating yourself how others appreciate you. So many relatable topics covered with anecdotes that encourage you to know you are not alone. Would recommend to everyone!
I just couldn’t finished it unfortunately. It is probably geared more towards pre-teens than anything else. I love her, but already knew most of all she was talking about!
I imagine this would be a great book for teenagers, very uplifting and inspiring. I wish I could have read this when I was a teenager, or even in my early twenties. At this point I felt too old for the style of writing, but looking beyond that, I still thought the message was nice, and I enjoyed reading about Chessie’s story as she’s obviously trying to help younger girls and she seems very relatable.
BOOK REVIEW 🗣 3.5/5 🌟 Be Your Own Best Friend, by Chessie King 👸🏽
“Beauty is not in your face, it’s in your soul”
If you follow the wonderful @chessiekingg on instagram, you will know she is the most bubbly, outgoing and honest person! She is a 27 year old women with a strong voice. She has created a platform to shout from the rooftops about body positivity. This book captures all of her thoughts and feelings on everything from the taboo subjects about our bodies, puberty, relationships, sex, social media and trolls! 👏🏻
This was a good read to pick up and put down in-between my fiction reads last month. I felt that Chessie was very open and honest about subjects that we would not usually be so open about… yep, body hair and all! 👀
Personally, I wish this kind of book was around 5 years ago (when I was 20), when I needed to read its words the most! Particularly in relation to the female body and what is totally normal, just not spoken about. I am 25, whilst I am obviously not claiming to know it all as I have lots of life yet to experience, I did however find this book more of a prompt/reminder to me, mostly, of particular topics I have personally explored before (mostly in my 20s so far!)
Most of all, it is a strong nudge to encourage you to be kind to yourself and practice more self love! 💛
An utterly beautifully written book where it feels like you’re sitting down with your best friend to just talk and work your way through the mishaps of life. Chessies’ bubbly, infectious personality comes through so perfectly and I feel like I have begun to learn, understand, appreciate and accept the way me and my body are. The path to self love is a long one but Chessie helps to guide with relatable personal stories of her own that remind me that I’m not alone in everything I experience and go through. The artwork is beautiful and I finished it in under a day. Would this recommend to anyone and everyone and will definitely be showing this to my friends who need to learn to love their beautiful selves too.
This book is so uplifting and inspiring, I devoured it so quickly and didn’t want it to end! I feel like Chessie is my friend and has given me so much advice about letting go of my own negativity towards myself, and instead putting my efforts into moving towards understanding and being kind to myself and my body, and encouraging positive relationships with others. I have followed Chessie on Instagram for a while and I have so much love for her and the message she puts across, she’s the absolute best and I’m so proud and happy that she has her own gorgeous book! 💕
Every female needs to read this! This book is such a down to earth, realistic version of the world seen through the most humble person. You learn everything from friendships to sticking up for yourself, and changing how our inner dialogue speaks about our bodies. Whilst this book is quite short, it is straight to the point and it's almost like having a huge chat about everything with a friend. Incredibly light-hearted and warming (some self-love/help books can be really intense). I felt lifted and ready to improve my own look on life, my body, and my mind.
I very much enjoyed this book. After having a slightly rocky year, I started following Chessie on Instagram and have been obsessed ever since.
The book is a much more open insight into her life experiences and a great guide to gain confidence and self love.
I did struggle to engage in the first chapter, but the latter chapters really grabbed me and I feel like I've learnt a few things that will change my outlook on life.
What a book. I cried and I laughed out loud. I honestly related to so many things that Chessie has so openly written about. I’ve followed Chessie on Instagram for years now and her energy and positivity is infectious. I feel like I can do anything at times when I see her posts and stories. I’ve had a rocky few months, we probably all have due to lockdown and having got this book and literally read it in a day I wish it had come out sooner! I’ll be recommending this to everyone.
Chessie's book is one of those books that every teenage girl needs to read, but then at nearly 27 I also needed to read it! Every female should read! I've been following her on Instagram for a while, and you can really tell the heart she has poured into this self help esque style book. It definitely makes you think about how you're treating yourself and it's articulated in an easy way to help identify what might be a missing link for you. I was left feeling really empowered!
A good friend bought me this book for my birthday and I just had to read it straight away. This is something every woman should read or gift to empower and uplift all of the woman around them. It does make you think "oh it's not just me" on many occasions and its very open and honest. I flew through it as it's an easy read and would read again!
This was a really positive and colourful self help book that read like I was talking to a friend.
It's definitely aimed at a slightly younger audience than me (it felt more for teenagers and those in their early 20's) but it was still insightful and interesting all the same! It didn't tell me anything new but it helped to remind me of important female experiences and issues that I tend to sweep under the carpet and ignore.
It had a few interactive sections where it said to write a list or a letter to yourself or your friends - I didn't complete this myself but these activities would definitely be helpful for younger readers trying to muddle through life.
As a fan of Chessie King, this book is like a continuation of the body positivity and female empowerment posts on her Instagram and it was a really enjoyable and cheerful read.
I was staying at a friend's house and saw this on her shelf so I read it in one sitting.
I liked how it asked how you were feeling and then turn to a certain page depending on your answer. I was also impressed by King's own story and how she now looks after herself. However, I felt I knew most of the material and felt this book was aimed at people younger than me which is fair enough.
A good book to address your mental health. Empowering, especially to younger women who might need to know more of this.
Such a good read! Listened to the audio of this as it was Chessie who was reading it and I just loved her. Been a follower for a couple of years now and have always appreciated what she does. If u need something to make you feel positive and confident or just put you in a good mood, listen to this! Thanku Chessie for this book.
I read this in just under 24 hours! I'm a big fan of Chessie King and think she makes a great fake big sister and role model! As an adult, I do think this book would most benefit teenage girls about to hit / going through puberty. Nevertheless, some lovely words of friendships which stuck with me more than anything else!
Like sitting down and talking to a friend. This book is written in a fun style and Chessie makes it easy to read, digestible content and tackles big issues in a very palatable style. Highly recommend for anyone who’s on the body positivity journey or just anyone going through these issues or wondering what it’s like to be inside the mind of a woman.
Every girls bible to self love, self confidence and positivity. The book can’t help but make you feel good normalising emotions and classic events in a girls life. I’m definitely going to share Chessie’s wise words and insights with my 17 year old sister and lend her this awesome female empowerment bible.
I wish this book was around when I was 16. Jam packed full of advice, wisdom, encouragement, support and genuine heartfelt sisterhood love. Every female should read this. And I honestly think it should be compulsory reading for girls at secondary schools. Thank you for writing this girl guide bible Chessie 🧡💫
I love this book and how real it is. I wish I have read it when I was way younger and I felt that everybody around me is perfect but not myself. Now (after a lot of books, life lessons and self reflection) I know that everyone is perfect in their own way. I don’t mean that too cliche, no, it’s the truth. I just love it. Read it and take care of you :)
Really lovely book to read about self love. I felt better after reading 10 pages. I would recommend to anyone who needs a pick me up and to know you are loved.
