Coming home tonight after a disappointing - and honestly confusing - visit to a local church gathering, I just felt really sad. And I thought about vegging out or having ten beers, but something told me to instead try sitting a minute with the feeling.
So, that's what I did... one minute, two.. twenty... twenty-five. Just kind of holding my sadness, acknowledging my feeling of dissonance, instead of stuffing it away.
And wouldn't you know? At the end of that time, the cover of this book - which Lisa recommended a while back - popped into my mind.
I found an online reading of the story, and though I didn't bawl, I did come close.
This book is beautifully illustrated, the message is wonderfully simple, and these few lines in particular calmed the *religious disorientation* pulling me down:

WOW!! What a beautiful book! Maybe: A Story About the Endless Possibilities in All of Us is well deserving of 5 stars and then some.
The message is reminiscent of Dr. Seuss’s Oh! The Places You Will Go! The difference is that Kobi Yamada does not sugar coat anything. He shares that there will be disappointments in life. He speaks to the fact there may be failures. However, Yamada stresses that you cannot allow setbacks to stop you from living to your fullest potential.
Along these same lines, Maybe speaks to the importance of being true to yourself, because there is no one else in the world like you. Who cannot use such affirmations?
I have shared this book with 5 and 6 year olds, twice. However, the message of this book speaks to all ages. You must read it for yourself!!

This is the single most beautiful children’s picture book I’ve ever read. The illustrations pulled me in and wouldn’t let go. The story is about making your own way in the world and being willing to be who you are. It’s about marching to the beat of your own drum. It’s a book about being real and making a difference in the world. About believing pigs can fly and each of us is a creative spirit that can soar in heart and mind. The artwork adds depth and complexity to every sentence.
I was crying when I read the last page. Sheer joy.
This is one of those books that gets added to the booklist in my mind when I think of this little question: “What if we sent ten books into the universe in a little pod? Ten books to represent what humanity is to an alien species. What books should the ten be?”
Read this to your child over and over and over.
Read this to yourself over and over and over.

داستان و تصاویر خیلی زیبا همدیگه رو کامل میکردن و واقعا این همنشینی برام خیلی دلنشين بود.
صفحهی اول کتاب، نویسنده خطاب به دوتا بچههاش چنین چیزی نوشته:
"کیفیت زندگیت بازتابی از کیفیت سوال هاییه که از خودت میپرسی..."
و بعد در انتهای کتاب توی بخش یادداشت نویسنده گفته بود که توی هر سنی ممکنه از خودمون دربارهی هدف و ارزشمون و اینکه چقدر مهم هستیم سوال کنیم.
و کل کتاب مثل یه یادآوری خیلی نرمی بود که با مهربونی برای خودمون به این سوالها جواب بدیم. دوستش داشتم واقعا.

Kobi Yamadas Hauptfigur trägt einen Overall in dezenter Farbe, Ballerinas und eine Vogelmaske, die das Gesicht frei lässt. Der Autor will mit seiner Geschichte Kindern helfen, ihre Stärken zu entdecken und mit positiver Aussage ein Ziel zu beschreiben. Zu einer genderneutralen Figur müssen Eltern und Kinder sich zunächst überlegen, mit welchem Pronomen sie von ihr sprechen. Im Verlauf des Buches gibt es zahlreiche Möglichkeiten, die Mimik und die Körpersprache des Vogelwesens zu beobachten und zu beschreiben.
Die Reise seiner Vogelfigur wird begleitet von einem Ferkel. Begegnungen mit gefangenen Tieren und einem Eisbär verdeutlichen, dass einige Lebewesen Hilfe des Menschen benötigen. Zu sehen sind Materialien wie Blätter, Zapfen und Stöckchen, aus denen etwas zu konstruieren wäre. Bauwerke überragen die Körpergröße der Figur und werfen damit die Frage auf, wie hat „es“ die Bauten konstruiert und wie geht es jetzt weiter? Auch die Maske regt zu Fragen an – wozu dient sie, was denken die Betrachter darüber?
Die Bildwirkung ist durch die gedeckten Farben intensiv und ruhig, die Körperhaltung des Kindes ausdrucksvoll. Die Abbildungen enthalten zahlreiche liebevoll dargestellte Details. Der Text ist jedoch für die empfohlene Altersgruppe ab 4 noch sehr abstrakt (Begriffe wie Talent, Hoffnung, Begeisterung, Scheitern). Mit Fragestellungen „Wer bist du?“ und „Was willst du im Leben erreichen?“ sind selbst Erstklässler oft noch überfordert und als Erwachsener muss man sich dem Wortschatz der betrachtenden Kinder anpassen.
Wer von Kinderbüchern erwartet, dass sie eine Geschichte mit linearem Handlungsverlauf erzählen und im Stück vorgelesen werden können, wird von dem Buch enttäuscht sein. Yamadas Buch setzt Offenheit für eine genderneutrale Figur voraus und dafür, gemeinsam mit einem Kind abstrakte Begriffe zu entdecken. Auf jeder Seite ist aus W-Fragen die Geschichte hinter der Abbildung selbst zu entdecken. Was könnte aus dem Naturmaterial konstruiert werden?, was denkt die Figur?, was wird sie jetzt tun?.

Die Bilder berühren einen total. Es gibt wenig Text, aber diese wenigen Wörter rauschen durch einen durch und wirken zusammen mit den Bildern richtig groß.

Darum geht es:

Heute habe ich mal eine ganz andere Buchempfehlung für euch: Ein zauberhaftes Kinderbuch.
Ich habe dieses Buch bei einer Freundin gesehen und war direkt verliebt!
„Vielleicht“ ist wahrscheinlich eins der schönsten Kinderbücher, die ich je gesehen und gelesen habe. Wunderschön in jeglicher Hinsicht: wunderschöne Illustrationen und zauberhafte Texte.
Ich habe leider keine Kinder, den ich das Buch vorlesen könnte, aber ich bin verzaubert und glaube, auch jedes Kind wäre es!

A mensagem é muito importante e as ilustrações… as ilustrações são simplesmente adoráveis! É uma óptima prenda para qualquer idade - nunca somos velhos demais para nos interrogarmos.

Um ehrlich zu sein war die Geschichte an sich für mich eher Nebensache und nicht wirklich inspirierend. Wodurch dieses Buch hervorsticht sind die unglaublich zauberhaften Illustrationen.

There’s this odd trend in children’s literature to forego plot or characters and instead just string a series of inspirational posters together.
Thing is, they’re likely extremely redundant seeing a parents who want this kind of “you are unique and can do anything” messaging for their kids are unlikely to need a collection of nice but ultimately lazy platitudes to get it across, and parents who don’t won’t get the book, so it’s an echo chamber.
I for one prefer books where my daughters get shown, not told, that girls can do great things. (I’m also under the impression my four year old can easily see through the book’s empty phrases, rereads have not been demanded.)
Really nice art, though.

Questo albo è una gioia per la mente ma soprattutto per gli occhi.
Il messaggio narrato è motivazionale e mette al centro il valore della vita, il credere in se stessi e il non arrendersi davanti alle difficoltà.
Le illustrazioni sono quel valore aggiunto che rende questo albo un bestseller: disegni meravigliosi, talmente belli che non si smetterebbe mai guardarli.
Assolutamente consigliato.

Meraviglioso e dolcissimo.
Regalo di una nuova ma cara e affezionatissima amica, questo albo è un piccolo gioiello.
A parte le immagini che sono stupende, curate e dei preziosi tesori, il messaggio che trasmette è uno dei più importanti anzi fondamentali della vita.
Parla dell’unicità irripetibile di ciascuno di noi, di quanto siamo essenziali per il mondo, ognuno con le proprie caratteristiche e potenzialità.
Indica l’importanza di intraprendere ognuno la propria strada, senza timore e seguendo il proprio cuore, perché anche se avremo paura e faremo fatica, anche se sbaglieremo o cadremo, saremo sempre in grado di rialzarci e scoprirci ogni volta un po’ migliori, più ricche.
Non dobbiamo aver paura di rischiare o di sognare grande perché il mondo ha bisogno proprio di noi e, dal momento che siamo al mondo, ogni cosa è possibile se lo vogliamo.
La dedica dello scrittore ai figli è un valore aggiunto: “la qualità della vostra vita sarà uno specchio della qualità delle domande che sarete in grado di farvi.” Proprio quello che penso io!

This was part of a gift for our recent 20th anniversary. My wife knows I love good illustration and the artwork by Gabriella Barouch is just stunning. Yamada's writing is inspirational and touching. It's rare that text and artwork compliment each other to such a dynamic extent. This is a special book on its own made even more poignant by receiving it as a gift from my wife on such an occasion.

Was für ein wunderbares Buch zum Mutmachen und sich entdecken! Es zeigt vor allem, dass es okay ist, sich noch nicht zu kennen und sich auszuprobieren. Auch, mal zu scheitern und trotzdem daran zu wachsen.

Got this for christmas yesterday, so it has some emotional value to me, that being sad it's a beautiful book with important messages and perfect for younger children. I also loved the illustrations.
